Take A Journey Into History BY CATHY MOLITORIS
In April of 1865, the train carrying the late President Abraham Lincoln passed through property that is now Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown on its way to Lincoln’s final resting place in Springfield, Ill. To commemorate that event and to celebrate the property’s rich history, Stone Gables Estate will hold its second Lincoln Funeral Train Commemoration on Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24. Friday’s events will run from 2 to 9 p.m., and Saturday’s events will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown.
Kelsey Grove invites the community to Earth 2 E-Town, a festival celebrating the environment.

aring for the environment is important to Kelsey Grove. Grove, who lives in Elizabethtown, is an elementary art teacher and a steward of the Earth. Now she’s taking her passion for nature and spreading it out in the community at Earth 2 E-Town. The community festival will take place on Saturday, April 24, at Elizabethtown Borough Park, 201 S. Mount Joy St. “I really wanted to do something last year for the 50th year of Earth Day,” Grove recalled, noting that the onset of COVID canceled her plans. “My husband and I just moved to Elizabethtown two years ago, and I was thinking we should try to organize something community-wide.” Earth 2 E-Town will feature a community cleanup beginning at 11 a.m. “I’m asking people to register for this part of the day so we can assign people places to clean up,”

pollinators,” Grove said. “We’ll also have the Lancaster County Pharmacists Association there to talk about safe medication disposal.” Grove hopes to hold the event annually on the first Saturday after Earth Day, and she wants to see it grow every year. “I’m starting off sort of small this year, but I’d like to add food trucks, presenters in the amphitheater in the park and more,” she explained. Although registration is required for the community cleanup, anyone can stop by the park for the other activities, Grove stated. “I want this to be a community event by the community and for the community,” she said. “We’re all ready to get outside, and this is a great way to do something good for our environment and have fun while doing it.” For more information on the event or to participate, email earth2etown@gmail.com or search for “Earth 2 E-Town” on Facebook.

Grove noted. “You can sign up individually, as a family or with friends.” The registration deadline is Saturday, April 10. Participants are asked to follow COVID guidelines, including mask wearing and social distancing. “When people are done with the cleanup project, we’re going to meet back at the park, and we’ll sort the garbage they collect and recycle as much as we can,” Grove noted. The festival will kick off at noon with live music from Ukulele Uprising, a Lancaster-based group, as well as children’s crafts in Pavilion No. 2. “We’re working with Lancaster Creative Reuse, who is providing recycled materials for crafts,” Grove said, adding that children’s crafts will be offered from 1 to 4 p.m. Booths offering informaton related to the environment will also be at the park. “We’ll have the Penn State Extension office with a booth with literature on the spotted lanternfly and information about
“This is a wonderful opportunity to witness and participate in a oneof-a-kind living history event,” said Roberta A. Freeman, public events coordinator for Stone Gables Estate. Friday’s activities will include a VIP experience, featuring a Civil War encampment, demonstrations, and exhibits by re-enactors and historians, as well as a narrated train ride on the Harrisburg, Lincoln and Lancaster Railroad. “Visitors who purchase train ride tickets will have an opportunity to walk through the world’s only fullscale replica of President Lincoln’s funeral car,” Freeman noted. Additional activities include a reception and dinner, featuring some of Lincoln’s favorite foods, as well as a presentation of the Gettysburg Address delivered by Abraham Lincoln portrayer Fritz Klein from the original lectern Lincoln used in November of 1863. Visitors will also see the unveiling of a Titanic

Shakespeare may have written his plays 400 years ago, but his work is more relevant than ever, said Laura Howell. “You cannot go a day without hearing something relating to Shakespeare,” noted Howell, the executive artistic director of The People’s Shakespeare Project. Believing in the relevance of the writer, Howell created ShakesPeers, a high school Shakespeare festival, last year. This year’s event was held virtually on March 22 and featured 16 students from Elizabethtown Area High School, Linden Hall, J.P. McCaskey High School, and The Stone Independent School.

way it’s supposed to be done and you actually participate in it, it’s wonderful.” The festival has offered students an opportunity to connect with other like-minded peers, Howell noted. “I love the sharing that occurs between strangers,” she said. “These are kids who have never met each other before, but they love Shakespeare, they love theater, Laura Howell and they love acting. Their world broadens by doing something like this. They see they are not alone in their passion. They can share it. They can learn from each other and inspire each other.” ShakesPeers is just one initiative of The People’s Shakespeare Project, which Howell founded in 2006. The project also offers Camp Will, an acting program for middle and high school students, which will run from Monday, July 12, to Friday, July 30, this year, as well as public performances of Shakespeare plays. Student participants enjoyed a comedy workshop while teachers met with Howell to discuss and share teaching techniques for Shakespeare. The festival also featured an intensive monologue workshop as well as an opportunity for students to perform for professional acting coaches. The event concluded with participants performing monologues and scenes from Shakespeare comedies. Howell said the festival had been something she wanted to do for years, ever since she served as a teacher and theater director at Lancaster Country Day School in the early 2000s. She realized her students responded positively to Shakespeare when they had the chance to read his works out loud. “They loved the challenge of it. They loved the language,” she recalled. “Shakespeare’s words are incredibly powerful when you put them in your mouth and, as I like to say, ‘chew on it.’ When you walk and talk and act it the

The Donegal Fish and Conservation Association (DFCA) needs you. The organization is holding its membership drive to grow its base and raise funds for its projects. “If you’re enthusiastic for clean, cold-water fishing, and you want to have access to it, we’d love to have you,” said Brandon Crouser, DFCA secretary. “If you’re an outdoor enthusiast, you should consider joining us.” In a typical year, DFCA would hold two major fundraising events - its outdoor show and kids’ fishing derby. With COVID restrictions, the group could not hold either event this past year. Instead, the organization had to think up new ways to raise funds.
“We set up a new website, www.donegalcreek.org, for people to make a minimum donation of $10,” Crouser noted. “Upon receiving their donation, we send out a membership pin and card as well as add them to the email list for future events like work parties, meetings and trout stocking the Donegal and Little Chiques creeks.” DFCA meetings are held the third Monday of every month, either at Amato’s Woodfire Pizza and Italian Restaurant in Mount Joy or, in warmer weather, at the East Donegal Township Chickies Creek Day Use Area. Crouser added that the membership drive has a goal of $3,000. “That’s the number we’d like to get to in order to be able to stock and maintain

our trout nursery, pay our electric bill and cover other expenses,” he explained. The nursery is a cooperative project with the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. DFCA became a nonprofit organization last year and is working on obtaining a second trout nursery in Mount Joy. “We are also working on a major stream bank restoration project with Donegal Trout Unlimited,” Crouser stated. Membership in the club hovers around 300 people, he noted, with about 50 active members. “We’d love to see that number go up,” he remarked. “We have a lot of activities planned for the coming year.” In April, the group is planning an invasive plant removal project. “ We’ll be removing multiflora roses, which are not fun to remove, but it needs to be done,” Crouser said. “We definitely could use the help.” For more information on the DFCA and its membership drive, visit www.donegal creek.org or search for “Donegal Fish and Conservation Association” on Facebook. Membership and pins may also be purchased in person at Precision Fly and Tackle, 1957 Fruitville Pike, Lancaster.

Using Three Letters To Save A Life BY CATHY MOLITORIS

You’ve heard about CPR, but what about QPR? The latter three letters are making a difference at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS). “QPR” stands for Question, Persuade and Refer. The school’s PAWS … and Think Club, in conjunction with Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), has been holding QPR workshops to help students who are struggling with their mental health. “After completing QPR (training), participants can recognize the warning signs of suicide, know how to offer hope and know how to

get help and save a life,” said Allison Bridgeman, EACTC assistant director and liaison to PAWS ... and Think. The training helps fill a need in the Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD), she stated. “We know from the 2019 PA Youth Survey data for Elizabethtown that 30% of EASD sixth-graders and 38% of EASD 12thgraders reported feeling sad or depressed most days in the past year,” she explained. “Rising concerns around teen mental health make prevention and education extremely important.” The PAWS … and Think Club spent the month of March focused on spreading messages of help and hope. In addition to the QPR training, club members shared information about mental health through messages on digital boards throughout the school and on social media. They also distributed 1,300 lollipops to fellow students with four different well-being tips. “The purpose of the awareness month campaign is to encourage students to learn how to get help for their peers or themselves when mental health issues arise and to create a school culture where students feel comfortable asking for help,” Bridgeman remarked.

Club members said the topic of mental health is more important than ever this year, when students have seen a disruption in their normal routine. “Talking about mental health and suicide is important because it is such a relevant issue in our society these days,” stated Haley Laughlin, PAWS … and Think vice president. “By informing students, staff and others about how to deal with mental health issues, we are teaching them valuable skills that can help them take better care of themselves for the rest of their lives.” The QPR training is helping students feel empowered to make a difference, said PAWS … and Think president Jagger Gilleland, adding, “The QPR training is an important step
in prevention of suicide and is just as important as training other students in CPR. I feel now I have a much better ability to confront another person and help them through an issue if it were to arise. I hope in the future that more students will attend and have the ability to help friends and those around them.” In addition to the March initiatives, PAWS … and Think hosts activities and events throughout the school year, encouraging students to make healthy choices. The club advisers are Margie Reed and Christine Dubosky. Manheim Christian Day School Will Hold Auction And Family Fun Days It will be a busy weekend at Manheim Christian Day School on Friday, April 23, and Saturday, April 24, when the school holds its 45th annual benefit auction and family fun days. The event will kick off with a dine-in or drive-through pork barbecue dinner on Friday from 3:15 to 6:30 p.m. at the school, located at 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The dinner will include Peters’ Barbecue pulled pork, a baked potato, applesauce, a pickle, a homemade roll, a dessert and a beverage. Bake sale items will also be available in the school’s gym. Advance tickets for the barbecue must be reserved by Friday, April 16, said Jen Kosydar, events coor-
dinator and auction committee member. A limited number of walk-in tickets will be available for the barbecue. A silent auction will begin at 4 p.m. on Friday and will run through noon on Saturday, Kosydar said. Students from Lead Now, a seventh- and eighth-grade student leadership group, will lead a welcome at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a live auction as well as presentations of class projects. “This includes the ‘Seed to Sow’ project, where each fourth-grade student is given $10 to use toward creating and selling a product to sell in the month leading up to the auction,” Kosydar explained. “Each of their products is then auctioned off that evening. (Other) items for the auction will include a children’s wood-
en picnic table, a handmade quilt, yard games and dessert trays, all personalized by individual classes.” On Saturday, the live auction will begin at 9 a.m. Specific items will be highlighted throughout the day, such as tools, hunting, camping and fishing items, lawn and garden equipment, general merchandise and gift certificates. Saturday will also feature children’s activities, including inflatables, a petting zoo, barrel train rides, face painting and games. Among the additional activities on Saturday will be a candy scramble and a presentation by Jesse Rothacker of Forgotten Friend Reptile Sanctuary. Additional auction items will include outdoor furniture, John Deere equipment, Her-

sheypark tickets, plants and a chicken coop, Kosydar said. She emphasized that this year’s event is especially important for the school, which serves students in prekindergarten through eighth grade. “We were not able to have our auction last year, but we raised over $162,000 in 2019,” she noted. “All proceeds go toward helping to make Christian education affordable for more families, purchasing new technology and funding essential building projects.” For more information on the event, as well as a full schedule of activities, visit www.manheimchristian.org or call the school office at 717-665-4300.

The boy’s and girl’s lacrosse teams have been busy during their first week back in action with each squad squeezing in three games. Unfortunately, all six ended up as losses for Elizabethtown starting on March 26th. The boy’s dropped their game with Lampeter-Strasburg by a 15-5 final while the Lady Bears fell 14-1 at Carlisle. Sam Azzalina and Elijah Poulos netted two scores for the boys with Jacob Wivell picking up the final goal. Hailey Mertz accounted for the lone girl’s goal. Three days later both teams battled South Western with the Lady Bears making the trek to Hanover while the boy’s enjoyed a second straight home game. The result was a 10-2 loss to the visiting Mustangs for the boys while the Lady Bears came home after falling 20-2. Brooke Horst joined
Mertz as goal scorers for the girl’s while Sawyer Smith picked up both goals on the boy’s side. Joseph Zink finished with 20 saves while Jordyn Gutshall stopped eight Lady Mustang shots. March 30th sent the Lady Bears on the road for their third straight game but this time only a short drive to Neffsville to face Manheim Township. The Lady Streaks sent E-town home with an 0-3 record thanks to a 24-0 final. Gutshall finished with 11 saves. With the Lady Bears on the road, the boys found themselves at home again, falling to Township by a 14-2 final. Azzalina and Smith scored once each with Zink stopping 13 shots. TRACK After the yearlong COVID hiatus, E-town spring athletes are back to practicing and competing. For the track and field team that meant a season opening trip to Manheim to battle the
Barons in a Section Two showdown. The Bears came home with losses on both sides, 12030 for the boys and 87-63 for the Lady Bears. “I expected a little bit of it,” said head coach Derrick McDonald, “but was counting on a couple of better performances in a couple areas. Our team got shell shocked but overall, there were good performances, I was expecting a little bit better but that is where we are right now. We will be better.” McDonald pointed to low numbers on the boy’s side as the main reason for the loss. With fewer athletes then normal, the Bears managed just one victory that came from Owen Dommel, Caiden Herr, Zach Verghese and Juan Lopez combining for a 47.0 in 400m relay. As the 87-63 final would indicate, the Lady Bears picked up a few more victories with Genevieve McDonald leading the way. The sophomore turned in winning performances in the 100m and 200m
and anchored the 400m relay to a winning time of 52.3. Adyson Haak, Olivia Anson and Lily Heistand joined McDonald in the relay win. Madeline Quinn made her usual appearances atop the 1600m and 3200m results while Katlyn Snyder (shot put) and Anson (discus) finished off the events wins for E-town. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team kicked off their 2021 season on March 26th, falling to Northeastern, before putting their season on pause due to COVID issues. The Bears are slated to get back to action on April 9th opposite Garden Spot. E-town dropped that season opener by a 3-0 count with losses of 25-15, 25-22 and 2522. Rudy Woitas led the way with 15 kills and five blocks. Josh McCoy matched those five blocks while Bill O’Connell added four digs to help the ‘D’. Dylan Shepherd collected 18 assists while Bryan Murray capped the offense with two aces.
SOFTBALL Diamonds might be a girl’s best friend, but the E-town softball team has found it difficult to spend quality time with their favorite diamond, the softball kind. The Lady Bears posted a 5inning, 10-run rule victory over Palmyra on March 26th but had their next game, a March 31st tilt with Ephrata pushed back due to rain. Kristin Geesey claimed the win over Palmyra allowing four hits with three strikeouts and just one run allowed. Jess Zimmerman and Brooke Bryan tallied two hits each while splitting two RBIs. Megan Gray matched those two RBIs thanks to three hits, including a home run. TENNIS The boy’s tennis team has been super busy in the month of March, hitting the courts six times in just over two weeks. After shaking off a 5-2 season opening loss to Donegal, the Bears have ripped off five straight wins, including back-toback shutouts over Garden Spot and Warwick. “This has been an exciting season for us,” said head coach Brenda McBride. “We have some very strong teams yet to play, but I couldn’t be more proud of these boys.”
70
McBride mentioned the mental side of the game in talking about the team’s 6-1 win over Hempfield on March 29th that stretched their winning streak to five games. “To see our younger players grow and mature in their mental game right before our eyes is very gratifying,” said McBride. McBride was able to enjoy two separate doses of gratification with both Steven Dupler and Hayden Musser wining their singles matches in three sets. Dupler rebounded to beat Carson Weigle 7-5 and 10-8 after dropping the opening set 1-6. Musser followed the same script in his match opposite Trent Meyers, dropping the opening set 3-6 before bouncing back for a 6-1, 13-11 win. Trent McBride and Jack Nyveldt claimed the remaining two singles wins, topping Alex Cooke and Eric Jordan respectively. McBride and Dupler teamed up for one of the two doubles wins while Nyveldt and Musser claimed the other. Elizabethtown’s remaining victories have come opposite Lebanon, and Cocalico plus the two 7-0 wins over Garden Spot and Warwick. Add in the Hempfield win and the Bears sit atop the Section One standings along with Penn Manor and Cedar Crest.

Friends In Action Intl. (FIA), a local nonprofit headquartered in Middletown, has provided volunteers with opportunities to utilize their trade skills in remote, off-the-grid regions of the world. Currently at work on 10 projects in six countries, FIA uses construction projects as a platform to assist missionaries who want to share the Gospel with unreached people groups. Although COVID-19 travel restrictions resulted in many canceled trips in 2020, FIA volunteers were able to travel to West Africa in February of this year. The team consisted of three mechanics, three welders, a team leader, and a field host. They met up with
in-country missionaries to develop a base camp of operations for FIA’s Water of Life ministry, which drills wells to provide thousands of Africans with clean drinking water. FIA had recently completed drilling efforts in Burkina Faso and relocated this ministry to a different region in West Africa. “Jihadist activity in Burkina created governmental restrictions preventing us from ministering away from the city,” said Jeremy (last name withheld), FIA’s field leader on the project. “We relocated to a region that provides access to those with the highest degree of need both physically and spiritually.”
Rob Donley makes repairs to a drilling rig.
Jeremy and his family relocated to this field in October 2020 to be on-site representatives and full-time workers on the project. Hosting the volunteer team recently and facilitating its work helped to accelerate FIA’s readiness to deliver wells and serve its ministry partners. Andy Bachert, an expert welder from Elizabethtown, was among the volunteers on the recent trip. He noted that the group’s journey to Africa went smoothly, although due to the pandemic, participants had to wear masks and provide proof that they had tested negative for COVID-19. At their work site, the mechanics serviced every piece
of equipment and all the vehicles necessary for the welldrilling ventures. Rob Donley, a mechanic from Lebanon, noted that the relocation trip from Burkina Faso had been rough on the equipment. “There’s not a lot of infrastructure. Most of the equipment was off-roaded over dry and rocky fields, so every piece of equipment needed servicing,” Donley said. The team diagnosed chronic equipment issues, determined future equipment designs and upgrades in light of available materials and supplies, and developed strategic plans for future support of the project See Volunteers pg 15

Students from Rheems Elementary School packaged kindness cards, activity books, and colored pencils to be sent to for local senior citizens. Participants included (from left) Luke Pericci, first grade; Warren Coble, first grade; Hannah Swords, second grade; Katie Zahn, second grade; and Charly Hicks, third grade.
Students from Rheems Elementary School recently sent cards with Masonic Village and Elizabethtown Healthcare and Rehab Center residents as part of a school-wide community service initiative. The project was part of the school’s CUBS curriculum and was meant to help the students better understand how a simple act of kindness like sending good wishes through a card can impact the larger community. In total, about 200 student-
crafted cards were delivered to both facilities. The students also collected word search books, crossword books, coloring books for adults, and colored pencils to send to the recreation therapists to use with the residents. CUBS stands for Children Understanding and Building Skills, and this curriculum is one of the special area classes that students in kindergarten through third grade have each week.
