Hop into fun at Eggstravaganza

Join the Easter Bunny and hop on over to a free community celebration when GEARS hosts its annual Eggstravaganza. Featuring egg hunts for people of all ages, the event will be held on Saturday, April 12, from 10 a.m. to noon at Elizabethtown Community Park, 201 S. Mount Joy St.

Egg hunts will start at 10 a.m. and happen every 15 minutes in age groups ranging from children age 2 and under to senior citizens.

“Egg hunts are free for kids age 12 and under. The senior egg hunt for ages 60-plus is also free,”

“We will have over 25,000 eggs filled with candy, small toys and prize slips!”

said Lee Eckert, GEARS recreation director. “To participate in the adult egg hunt participants should purchase a ticket the day of the event.” The adult egg hunt is open to people ages 13 to 59.

“Eggs will be stuffed with candy and prize tickets,” Eckert shared, adding that candy was donated by Mars Wrigley. “Once their egg hunt is finished, people will bring their prize tickets to the prize table. Prizes for the egg hunts for children 12 and under will include various toys and stuffed animals. Senior and adult egg hunt prizes include various gift cards to downtown Elizabethtown businesses.”

Along with the egg hunt, the event will feature free pictures

with the Easter Bunny and refreshments for purchase from Hitch Coffee food truck.

Eckert noted he is particularly excited about the return of Hitch Coffee and the assistance of the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown with helping to hide the eggs. It’s no small task, because there will be a lot of eggs.

“We will have over 25,000 eggs filled with candy, small toys and prize slips!” Eckert said.

Eggstravaganza is important to GEARS because it fosters community engagement, brings families together and provides a fun experience for groups of all ages, he stated.

“By hosting it annually, it provides families an event to look forward to every year, encourages outdoor activity and creates traditions for our families in our area,” he remarked. “It also helps raise awareness about GEARS’

More than 100 textile pieces, spanning more than 100 cumulative years of work, are on display at the Winters Heritage House Museum. “Interwoven:

A Multigenerational Showcase of Textile and Fiber Arts” features quilts, bags, clothes, books and other sewn goods

created by three Indian-American women: Zahira Paul, Zebun Rangwala and Aparna Paul. The exhibit opened on April 5 and will run through Saturday, April 19, at the museum, located at 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. The exhibit was developed after Aparna visited an art gallery in Boston to see a handcrafted pottery display. She

When Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren hosts a performance of “The Mistake,” a play about the atomic bomb, the event will symbolize the overall mission of the church, said Jason Haldeman, pastor of faith formation.

“As an historic peace church, the Church of the Brethren has a long history of wrestling with and challenging the complexities of organized warfare and violence,” he shared. “Every Sunday, our worship service begins by reminding folks that

we seek to ‘Practice Peace, Service and Openness to All.’ This is just one way of living into that witness.”

“The Mistake” will be performed at Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown, at 7 p.m. on Tuesday, April 15. An additional performance will be held at 7 p.m. on Wednesday, April 16, at Akron Mennonite Church, 1311 Diamond St., Akron.

The play features two actors. Riko Nakazono will portray Shigeko Nomura, a young woman living in wartime Hiroshima.

Second Friday to highlight sticker books

Second Friday will be held in Elizabethtown on April 11, and the event will celebrate the fourth anniversary of LIV-Etown’s “My Town, E-Town Sticker Book.” Second Friday will run from 4 to 8 p.m.

The sticker books offer people an opportunity to explore the downtown area on Sticker Quests. People are encouraged to purchase a sticker book and collect locally designed, custom-made stickers at local events.

A new sticker book is released each April, featuring cover art from a local artist. This year’s cover was designed by Julie Drake.

Through a partnership with Mars Wrigley and additional sponsors, 100% of the proceeds from sales of the books provide funding for free community events organized by LIVEtown throughout the year. For more information, follow “LIV_Etown” on Facebook.

Michael Mears will play Leo Szilard, a Hungarian scientist instrumental in creating the atomic bomb.

When the decision is made to use the atomic bomb on Japan, Szilard, tormented by his role in creating it, tries to do everything he can to prevent the catastrophe.

Nomura survives her city’s destruction and must use every last ounce of energy to reach and rescue her parents.

Mears has had a rich and varied career for over three decades as an actor and playwright. He has appeared in stage productions, television shows and movies. Nakazono is a London-based Japanese actor, dancer, puppeteer and singer. She has performed internationally and has worked with numerous theater luminaries, including award-winning composer Stephen Schwartz.

The show’s tour will take the play to the University of Notre Dame, Manchester University and the University of Chicago before the Lancaster County performances. After the local shows, the play is set for a three-week off-Broadway run in New York City.

The members of Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren wanted to bring the play to town to not only tell a compelling story, but to also highlight the importance of peace, Haldeman said.

“A few months ago, we heard from friends at Akron Mennonite through our connections with local peace witness organizations that the performance was coming to Lancaster County and looking for an additional venue,” he explained.

Following the performance, Brad Wolf of the Peace Action Network of Lancaster will facilitate a question-and-answer session with

the audience and the actors.

Haldeman hopes audience members will come with an open mind, ready to tackle some tough subjects.

“This production not only asks important questions about our past, but invites a valuable conversation about the future of technology, weaponry and warfare,” he stated. “Today, few individuals are even alive who remember the use of nuclear weapons in 1945. Folks who attend this showing can expect a top-notch theoretical performance on an increasingly relevant topic.”

No tickets are needed for the

Elizabethtown performance as the church will cover the incurred costs of the production. A freewill offering will be received at the end of the performance and will benefit two organizations that have a history of confronting the proliferation and use of nuclear weapons, Haldeman said, noting that money will support the Mennonite Central Committee and the Church of the Brethren’s On Earth Peace.

attend the performance. “While we do encourage people to attend in person, for those at a distance, with health issues or who are otherwise unable to be here in person, we hope to have the performance live-streamed at Etowncob.org,” he said.

Haldeman invites anyone who is interested in learning more to

thought of her mother’s many handcrafted textiles and thought her own family could put on a similar display.

When she called her mom, Zahira, her mother suggested also including Aparna’s grandmother, Zebun, in the showcase.

“(My mom) said, ‘We should do this for Nani’s work, too,’” Aparna recalled. “She has decades and decades of seamstressing and fiber arts and all manner of craftwork.” While planning the exhibit, the women also pulled in pieces from Zebun’s mother and aunt, all of whom sewed and sold their work to sustain their families. The original version of the showcase debuted in Cambridge, Mass., at the Cambridge Public Library in July 2024.

friends, learning craft techniques from friends or teaching others how to sew/quilt - as well as making and mending, a practice of reusing, recycling and repairing what you have to make new things.

Teresa St. Angelo, director of the Winters Heritage House Museum, learned about the women after a member of the museum’s on-site quilt group told her about the Massachusetts exhibit. She is excited to bring in accomplished textile artists and showcase their work.

They chose a venue for the show in Elizabethtown, where Zebun and Zahira live. “We decided to host a showcase here so that our friends and family in the area could attend,” Aparna said. In organizing the local exhibit, Aparna and Zahira focused on building community through crafting - making gifts for

“Our quilters group avidly seeks fellow quilters,” she explained. “I see their eyes light up when discussing techniques, looking at other quilters’ finished pieces and sharing their stories about their craft. I wanted to offer a quality program to our quilters and our community on this topic.”

When Zahira showed Teresa a few of the finished pieces and a description of the program she had presented in Cambridge, Teresa knew the exhibit would be a good fit for the Elizabethtown museum.

that her mother and her daughter had created and how they worked together for years was impressive and touching,” she recalled. “All three generations of women would have to be a part of the exhibit and program.”

Zebun is a textile/fiber artist from Mumbai, India, currently based between Elizabethtown and West Windsor Township, N.J. Her craft practice has spanned commercial sewing, sewing for family, quilting and crochet lacemaking.

Zahira is a textile/fiber artist from Mumbai, India, currently based in Elizabethtown. Her craft practice has included mostly quilting but also knitting, crocheting and embroidery. Outside of crafting, she is an occupational therapist at Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Aparna is the curator of the show. She grew up in Elizabethtown and is currently based in Cambridge. She writes and performs poetry and is a chemical engineer.

Teresa said visitors for the exhibit can expect an expansive display of

creativity.

“Our cabins will be filled with the work of three generations of women who have put their heart into their art,” she stated. “Come and see the artistry behind each piece. … These women are an inspiration! One family, three generations and what they have created and completed will amaze visitors. … The Winters Heritage House Museum is thrilled to provide our community with a variety of cultural experiences that highlight the skills, traditions and collections of local individuals.”

“Interwoven” will be open from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturdays through Tuesdays; from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Wednesdays; and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Thursdays and Fridays through April 19.
