A Special 5K For Mother’s Day BY CATHY MOLITORIS
When it came to raising funds this year for Brittany’s Hope, executive director Mai-Lynn Abel Sahd and her team got creative. “We usually do a big 5K fundraiser in the fall, but we had to scale that down this year,” Sahd said. “So, we came up with this idea of the 5K Mother’s Day Challenge.”
Elizabethtown Area High School students (from left) Emma Kreider, Claire Thomas, Matthew Smedley, Makenna Heisey and Ainsley Raybold are getting hands-on experience in an EMT course with Northwest EMS.
Learning How To Save Lives field experience before we even graduate from high school,” said ach school day, students from Claire Thomas, a senior at ElizaElizabethtown Area High bethtown Area High School. She is School can be found learning one of five students in a morning how to save lives. They are part of a class that meets at the station in new program that offers emergency Elizabethtown. Ten students also medical technician (EMT) training meet every day in the afternoon. The class takes students through through Northwest Emergency various stations covering everything Medical Services (EMS). “We are all interested in going from bandaging wounds to CPR. “We provide health care services into the medical field, and this is giving us an opportunity to have for the community, and this is a way to continue that while also focusing on the education component of our mission,” said Ryan Runkel, who teaches the class. “There is a big demand right now for EMS providers, so this is great that the school district is interested in this program and that the students are interested in Instructor Ryan Runkel leads students participating.” (from left) Emma Kreider, Claire Thomas and Makenna Heisey in practicing reviving a patient. Creating Art “En Plein Air” BY CATHY MOLITORIS
For the next few weeks, don’t be surprised to see artists painting at spots all throughout Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. They are part of the first River Towns Plein Air event. The event will feature artists painting “en plein air,” or outdoors, through Wednesday, April 21. The public is invited to watch the painting, and the final products will be displayed at an art show and competition at Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., on Friday, April 23, through Sunday, April 25.

For senior Makenna Heisey, the class is providing an opportunity to learn new things and then prove that knowledge. “The tests are pretty difficult,” she stated. “They are not your typical school tests, because they cover a lot of material in a very specific way. That’s definitely the most challenging part of this class.” In addition to classroom time, the students complete clinical hours with the EMS staff. “I love being able to go out in the field and actually be on call,” said junior Emma Kreider.

Junior Ainsley Raybold said the class is fun but challenging. “I love the hands-on training,” she noted. “Ryan puts us through some very tough situations.”
The “race your way” event will run from Saturday, May 8, through Saturday, May 15. “It’s a way for people to participate in an easy, safe manner,” Sahd noted. “You just go to our website and choose how you want to participate.” There are multiple options for the fundraiser, which raises money for orphaned and at-risk children through adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. Participants may pick the distance of their choice and complete the miles anywhere and any way they choose, from walking to running, biking, inline skating and more. Participants may also choose to celebrate Mother’s Day through the event, Sahd said. “The beautiful piece of this is you have the option to honor or dedicate your race to a mother figure - any woman you respect - and we will write a Mother’s Day card and send it out on your behalf,” she explained. “It’s a nice Mother’s Day gift to your mom or any influential woman in your life.”

The show will run on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.; on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. River Towns Plein Air is a project of Marietta Art Alive! (MAA), a group that promotes the enjoyment, creation and awareness of visual arts and has partnered with Rivertownes PA USA for this event. “Plein air is becoming a really big thing with artists across the country,” said Marita Hines, a member of MAA. “I’ve participated in plein air art competitions regionally, and many of the other artists participating in this event have also.” When the members of MAA came up with the idea for the event, they weren’t sure how it would be received by the art community. They were pleasantly surprised. “We have 60 artists participating, and we had to cut it off at 60,” Hines stated. “We actually have a wait list. We have artists coming from five states - Maryland, Delaware, Virginia, New York and Pennsylvania.” The public is invited to watch the artists in action at locations throughout the area. A full map of sites can be found at www.marietta artalive.com/pleinairevent, along with dates when artists will be at featured locations. “We invite the community to come out and see the art being made and then get excited to see what the result is when they come to the show at the end of the month,” Hines said. Each artist can display up to three works for the art

show and can enter two into the competition, which will offer several awards including a People’s Choice award. The Juror of Awards for the show will be artist Julie Riker. Proceeds from sales of artwork will benefit Marietta Community House. The location is the original home of the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, and the school will partner with MAA to offer a free intergenerational plein air drawing session from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on April 24 outside across the street from the exhibit space. The rain date for the class will be April 25. Hines said painting en plein air provides artists with a unique way to create their works. “It’s a challenging way to paint,” she explained. “Factors like the weather and wind can make it challenging. The shadows change, too, so what you’re painting may look one way and then an hour later, it looks very different.” For more information on River Towns Plein Air, visit the aforementioned website or www.facebook.com/ MariettaArtAlive, where updates on artist locations will be posted daily during the event.

Sahd said although this is the first time Brittany’s Hope is doing a 5K this way, she has set lofty goals. “We would be absolutely thrilled to get over 400 participants to accept the challenge, establish 40 teams and together raise $30,000 for Brittany’s Hope,” she stated. “In challenging times like these, the work of high-impact charities like ours is critically needed. We are their only lifeline.” She added that 100% of the funds raised go directly to caring for vulnerable and orphaned children. This year’s race has a special significance for Sahd. Her 5-year-old son, Peter, will be participating. “He told me, ‘I want to race to help boys and girls who need mommies, daddies and toys,’” Sahd said, adding that Peter even picked out a unique team name - Team Dino-mite - to reflect his love of dinosaurs. While Peter will be racing in honor of his grandmother, Sahd encourages anyone with a desire to give back and also honor women to participate in the event. “We can’t all get together as a community like we have in the past, but we can still bring people together in a different way, united for one cause,” she stated. In April of 1865, the train carrying the late President Abraham Lincoln passed through property that is now Stone Gables Estate in Elizabethtown on its way to Lincoln’s final resting place in Springfield, Ill. To commemorate that event and to celebrate the property’s rich history, Stone Gables Estate will hold its second Lincoln Funeral Train Commemoration on Friday and Saturday, April 23 and 24. Friday’s events will run from 2 to 9 p.m., and Saturday’s events will run from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. “This is a wonderful opportunity to witness and participate in a one-of-a-kind living history event,” said Roberta A. Freeman, public events coordinator for Stone Gables Estate. Friday’s activities will include a VIP experience, featuring a Civil War encampment, demonstrations, and exhibits by reenactors and historians, as well as a narrated train ride on the Harrisburg, Lincoln and Lancaster Railroad. “Visitors who purchase train
ride tickets will have an opportunity to walk through the world’s only full-scale replica of President Lincoln’s funeral car,” Freeman noted. Additional activities include a reception and dinner, featuring some of Lincoln’s favorite foods, as well as a presentation of the Gettysburg Address delivered by Abraham Lincoln portrayer Fritz Klein from the original lectern Lincoln used in November of 1863. Visitors will also see the unveiling of a Titanic model. “Two tragic events occurred on April 14, 47 years apart: President Lincoln’s assassination in 1865 and the sinking of the Titanic in 1912,” Freeman said. VIP tickets will also be available for an overnight stay for two on April 23 at Moonstone Manor as well as breakfast the
next morning. VIP tickets include entrance to all general admission activities on Saturday. General admission will include an official Lincoln funeral train commemoration ceremony, train rides, Civil War demonstrations and presentations, and more. Event organizers are seeking Civil War re-enactors as well as cannons, cavalry and 1860s wagons for the event. Interested readers may contact ThatTrainLady@yahoo .com for more information or may register at https://stone gablesestate.com/reenactor -registration/. One option for this year’s race will be to utilize a selfguided course through Lancaster city with a curated Race Against Racism playlist featuring music and spoken word about historic stops along the
route. “This year we wanted to make a stronger connection with our important mission of eliminating racism and empowering women,” Blake said. “Our first step was to work with the African American Historical Society of South Central Pennsylvania to identify six key sites of historical significance to African Americans in Lancaster. Our professional race coordinator used these points to map and

Runkel said he hopes to expand the class to other school districts and is also working with Elizabethtown College to offer a class for the community. “One of the things the students don’t even realize they are getting out of this class is they are learning how to apply quick thinking in emergency situations,” he noted. “Every day, they are honing their critical-thinking skills.”

Matthew Smedley, a senior, said what happens out in the community is just as educational as what happens in the classroom. “This course is giving us a really good opportunity to experience what happens before someone gets to the hospital,” he said of the ambulance rides, which have found students doing everything from administering oxygen to intubating patients. The class is also providing an opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine to see if it’s a good fit for them, said Claire, adding, “It’s a way to have some experience in the medical field and gauge your level of interest or see what’s really involved in a career like

E-town Tennis Wins Five Straight Matches
As winning steaks go, it is difficult to put one together while playing team tennis, but the Bears managed to rip off five straight ‘W’s” after a season opening loss, putting them atop the Section One standings at roughly the midpoint of the season. Two matches later and Elizabethtown has started a new winning streak after a 3-2 setback to Lancaster Country Day on April 1st. The Bears are still atop the section standings thanks to LCD and their Section Three status. E-town remained perfect in Section One play by slipping by Manheim Township 4-3 on the 6th. “We are very excited to have had some early success,” said head coach Brenda McBride. “Our win at Manheim Township will be remembered by these boys for a long time, being that our top three had to dig themselves out of deficits to find the will to win.” The singles success that
McBride mentions came after the double action where only Trent McBride and Steven Dupler managed a win, putting E-town in a hole with just singles matches remaining. Things started looking bleak when Township claimed the number four singles match. Nyveldt and Dupler started to turn the tide with their three set victories, leaving Trent McBride as the final hope. Despite the match approaching four hours and darkness starting to set in, McBride was able to scratch his way to a 46, 6-3, 12-10 win, securing the match for the visitors. As for the LCD match, Nyveldt was the lone singles player to pull out a win, claiming the number three singles match. Elizabethtown picked up their second win in doubles with Aidan Blyler and Quinn Dolan posting a straight set win. BASEBALL The old saying goes that good things come to those who wait. For the E-town baseball team it is oh so true. Thanks to some late

pre-season COVID issues the Bears were forced to pause their season just before it began, postponing their season opener until April 7th, nearly two weeks after the rest of the L-L enjoyed their first pitch. But as the saying goes, good things came to the Bears that waited as Elizabethtown survived a late scare from Ephrata to snag a 14-11 victory. The win not only moved E-town to 1-0 on the season but with the 2020 season falling to COVID it gives second year skipper Jordan Higgins his first victory. Josh Kreider got the start and the win but needed help from Cael Brandt to finish things up. Together the pair allowed 11 runs with seven earned to go with four strikeouts and one walk. Brandt was also one of four Bears that finished with two RBI with Tanner Breault, Alex Baker and Ben Wentling joining the fun. Baker and Wentling did their damage with one hit while Brandt and Breault combined for seven hits, including two doubles by Brandt. SOFTBALL The softball team was also forced to wait through a COVID pause but the 10-day wait between their season opening win against Palmyra and their April 5th beat down of Conestoga Valley had little effect. Need proof...how about an 11-0, five inning victory where winning pitcher Kristin Geesey issued no walks and just one hit to go with
three strikeouts. The Lady Bears did their heavy lifting in the third and fifth innings where they scored 10 of the 11 runs. Sophia Finch provided the big bat with four RBI on two hits while Jessica Zimmerman and Geesey matched the two hits but drove in two runs each. One day later the Lady Bears were back in action, this time with a trip to Ephrata. Elizabethtown came home with another 10-run victory, but the Lady Bears needed all seven innings to finish things up. Brooke Bryan got the start but only covered two innings before giving way to Geesey who picked up the win. Geesey accounted for five of E-town’s six strikeouts while the pair split two walks. Once again Finch sparked the offense with two hits, but one was a fifth inning grand slam and when combined with her seventh inning single the sophomore finished with five RBI. Ava Fair rapped out three singles with two of them helping to extend Etown’s lead, giving her two RBI and four runs scored. TRACK The track team hosted their first meet of 2021 on April 6th with the Lady Bears slipping by Lampeter-Strasburg 81-69 while the boy’s fell 111-39. Caiden Herr accounted for two of the boy’s three wins, claiming both hurdle events, while Ethan Jones topped the high jump field. The Lady Bears did the bulk of
their work on the track where they posted eight of their 12 wins, including all three relay races. From there a trio of Lady Bears paved the way with two wins each. Carly Sedun was the only one of the three to do her work in the field, claiming the shot put and discus. Genevieve McDonald did her work in the sprints with wins in the 100m and 200m while Madeline Quinn took the 1600m and the 3200m. Adyson Haak picked up the final win on the track in the 400m. Olivia Anson (javelin) and Julia Sikora (triple jump) enjoyed two field wins. BOYS’ LACROSSE Nearly two weeks into the 2021 season, the boy’s lacrosse team is still in search of their first win. The Bears fell to 0-5 overall and 03 in Section One play after losses to Warwick and Penn Manor. Warwick posted their 11-2 victory on
April 1st while Elizabethtown fell to Penn Manor by a 9-0 count on the 6th. Joe Zink tallied 43 saves in the two losses with Sam Azzalina accounting for both goals. GIRLS’ LACROSSE Wins have been hard to come by for the Lady Bears as well with losses to Warwick and Penn Manor putting Elizabethtown at 0-5 overall and 0-3 in league play. The Lady Bears came closest to a win on April 6th, but Penn Manor was able to pull away in the second half for a 9-3 final. Hailey Mertz netted two of the three goals with Aiesha Rios nabbing the other. Jordyn Gutshall turned away eight shots. A few days earlier the Lady Bears traveled to Lititz and came home on the wrong end of a 19-3 final. Mertz, Rios, and Moira Shott split the goals while Gutshall finished with 13 saves.

The event will kick off with a dine-in or drivethrough pork barbecue dinner on Friday from 3:15 to 6:30 p.m. at the school, located at 686 Lebanon Road, Manheim. from Lead Now, a seventhand eighth-grade student leadership group, will lead a welcome at 6 p.m. on Friday, followed by a live auction as well as presentations of class projects. “This includes the ‘Seed to Sow’ project, where each fourthgrade student is given $10 to use toward creating and selling a product to sell in the month leading up to the auction,” Kosydar explained. “Each of their products is then auctioned off that evening. (Other) items for the auction will include a children’s wooden picnic table, a handmade quilt, yard games and dessert trays, all personalized by individual classes.” On Saturday, the live auction will begin at 9 a.m. Specific items will be highlighted throughout the day, such as tools, hunting, camping and fishing items, lawn and garden equipment, general merchandise and gift certificates. Saturday will also feature children’s activities, including inflatables, a petting zoo, barrel train rides,
