SERVING THE LOCAL COMMUNITIES SINCE 1954

Child Care Center To Celebrate 50 Years By Diane Bitting

In the late 1960s, church leaders in Elizabethtown decided to help the growing number of families with two parents in the workplace. Thus, in 1969, the United Churches Elizabethtown Area organization founded an outreach program known as the Elizabethtown Child Care Center (ECCC). “As a group, they recognized that there was a need for child care in the community,” explained Allyson Cook, ECCC executive director. Originally a preschool only, the program was housed at Christ Evangelical Lutheran Church. In 1989, the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren became a second location, housing programs for infants and toddlers as well as morning and afternoon programs for kindergartners. In 1993, services again were expanded

to include before- and after-school care, also at the Church of the Brethren. In 1999, the entire ECCC was consolidated at Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren, where it remains today. The ECCC is planning an anniversary celebration to mark its 50 years of service. The celebration will take place on Saturday, April 27, from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the center, 777 S. Mount Joy St., Elizabethtown. The community is invited to join. “We wouldn’t be where we are if it weren’t for the support and generosity of the community that we’re in,” said Cook. The day’s activities will include tours of the center; children’s games and activities, such as face painting and balloons; and live music performed by Corty Byron, an ECCC alumnus, and Josh Tindall, one of the church’s pastors, and his wife, Elizabeth, church keyboardist. “GET THE CONVERSATION STARTED” SERIES APRIL 27, 10AM Social Worker & Registered Nurse explore:

co-chair of the event along with Nancy Shonk, the local event is part of a nationwide observance. “On April 17, 1952, President Harry Truman signed a law proclaiming a National Day of Prayer,” Musser said. “In 1988, President Reagan designated the first Thursday of May as the National Day of Prayer.” Musser said that the call to prayer actually began earlier when the Founding Fathers prayed for wisdom in forming a new nation. The national committee, which was

formed in 1972, chooses a Bible verse as the theme of the annual event. This year’s theme is John 13:34, “Love one another, just as I loved you.” “We will focus on seven topics as suggested by the national headquarters,” said Musser. According to www.nationaldayof prayer.org, the prayer priorities for 2019 are government, military, media arts, business, education, church and family.

Musser noted that there will be a guest speaker representing each category at the breakfast. For example, state Sen. Ryan Aument and Mount Joy Mayor Tim Bradley will be on hand to discuss government, while a social worker from Donegal School District will address the topic of education. “Dr. Walter Mueller, who runs a counseling service, will talk about the effects of media on our culture,” said Musser. He added that Bradley will provide the welcome and former Mount Joy Major Stan Wills will be the master of ceremonies. The prayer breakfast will close with a song. People of all faiths are welcome to take part in the breakfast. “It’s a meeting of people who are faith-based,” Musser said. “If you believe in prayer, (you are encouraged to attend).” In addition to the Mount Joy event, National Day of Prayer activities will take place throughout Lancaster County on May 2. “There are at least 10 to 12 other locations in the county that do breakfasts, including New Holland and Willow Street. In Lititz they will hold an evening activity in Lititz Springs Park where 4,000 to 5,000 people show up,” Musser noted. “Some churches will be open throughout the day or do their own events. There is power in numbers coming together.” See Prayer Breakfast pg 10

the center offers a kindergarten “wraparound” program with lesson plans designed to complement what kindergartners are learning during their halfday at school. Parent Melissa Derr, board vice chair, has been pleased with her son’s experience. “He essentially got full-day kindergarten by going to ECCC in the afternoon and East High (Street Elementary School) in the morning,” she said. Emotional and social development is also a “huge focus,” noted Cook. “Children need those basic skills, that basic foundation, in order to be ready to learn,” she stated. “They need to know that they

At 12:30 p.m., a brief program will recognize current and former families, staff and members of the center’s board of directors. The event is free, with popcorn and whoopie pies donated by local companies. A barbecue platter can be purchased for lunch, with proceeds to benefit tuition assistance and educational improvements. Most activities will take place outside, weather permitting, with plans to move inside in the case of bad weather. Each year the ECCC serves more than 200 children from 6week-olds through fifthgraders. Hours are Mondays through Fridays from 6 a.m. to 6 p.m. About a third of the children qualify for reduced tuition based on family income. Over the years, the center’s mission has been the same: to offer a high-quality early learning curriculum for the children it serves. “There has been so much research that shows how important that is for children and for school readiness,” said Cook. The center has been accredited since 1991 by the National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) and is a Keystone 4 STAR Center, having obtained Pennsylvania’s highest rating for a child care center. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania recently announced William Cole as Volunteer of the Year for 2019. Cole was selected for the honor by the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania’s board of directors from among the museum’s corps of more than 150 active volunteers. An eight-year member of the Friends of the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, he originally picked up a volunteer application while he was visiting the museum. With railroading as his hobby, Cole recalled that it seemed a perfect fit. Cole reveals that he has been a model railroader since age 5 when he received a Lionel train for Christmas, and he has had layouts in both O gauge and HO gauge. He currently has a four-byeight-foot O-scale layout that he maintains in his home. He describes it as electronics-heavy and automated for the 21st century. E-town Tennis Team Rolls to 9-1 by Eric Pyles

The boy’s tennis team continues to roll through their 2019 slate with wins over Warwick, Penn Manor and Lampeter-Strasburg moving the Bears to 91 on the season. The April 7th match with Warwick was shortened to five matches with E-town enjoying the sweep. Ethan Lown, Nacho Bartolome and Trent McBride collected the singles victories with both McBride and Lown posting 6-0, 6-0 wins. Bartolome needed three sets to get by Clay Myers at number two doubles, sealing his victory with a 10-7 third set. Evan Schneider and Jimmy Overmoyer did not surrender a point in their number two doubles win while Jon and Chris Gartley collected the final team point with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Alec Ashcroft and Nate Castellitto. One day later the Bears traveled to Millersville to face Penn Manor and slipped out with a 4-3 win. Bartolome and Schneider were the only doubles tandem to pull out a win, topping Maxwell Davis and Petros Karpouzis 9-7. Both players also came out of their singles matches victorious with Bartolome posting a 6-1, 6-4 win and Schneider winning in three sets 1-6, 6-2, 10-8. McBride picked up the final victory at number two singles. Elizabethtown’s victory over L-S went down on the 10th with E-town

dropping just one match. The Bears swept singles action with only Schneider’s 7-6, 6-0 win at number four singles providing any real drama. Lown, Bartolome and McBride all won in straight sets while surrendering just six points combined in the three matches. Lown and McBride had little trouble with Alex Baker and Alexandros Vaziri, winning 8-2 while Bartolome and Schneider claimed their doubles match with an 8-6 final. BOYS’ LACROSSE As the 2019 season churns along the Elizabethtown boy’s lacrosse team is struggling to find their footing. The Bears currently sit at 1-7 after taking losses in their three most recent games. The first of those was a 20-4 defeat opposite Hempfield on April 5th where the Black Knights did the bulk of their damage during a 17-2 opening half. Sawyer Smith netted two of the four Etown scores while Cam Poulos and Sam Azzalina nabbed one each. Duncan Keller turned away 15 shots in the loss. A few days later the Bears made the trip to Wyomissing where they suffered an 8-3 loss. The Spartans turned a close 5-3 contest into the 8-3 final thanks to a 3-0 run through the final frame. Matt Pottgeiser, Poulos and Azzalina picked up one goal each while Keller finished with 12 saves. The Bears were back in action on the 10th, hosting the Saints of Berks

Catholic with the result, a 10-5 loss. Keller tallied another 12 saves between the pipes with Smith pacing the offense with two goals. Azzalina, Poulos and Chad Heisey contributed one goal each. TRACK The track and field teams made the trek to Denver on April 8th to battle Cocalico. The result was a 79-71 win for the Lady Bears and an 85-65 loss for the boy’s side. Derek Heisey led the way in the loss, picking up two of E-town’s six wins with a 15.8 in the 110H and by clearing 6-2 in the high jump. Adam Evans claimed the only other win in the field with a toss of 141-9 in the javelin. The Bears success on the track was spread out over three athletes starting with Aiden Weaver’s 53.4 in the 400m. Jesse Myers added a 2:15.5 in the 800m while Frank Miele clocked a 24.2 in the 200m. Olivia Anson was the lone Lady Bear to claim two solo wins but Cat Shontz, Katie Locker and Madeline Quinn each enjoyed one solo victory as well as one relay win. The trio joined up with Sierra Kapcsos to win the 3200m relay in 10:52.2 before setting out on their solo endeavors. That resulted in Locker winning the 800m (2:19.0), Quinn the 1600m (5:43.6) and Shontz the 3200m (11:34.5). Anson’s wins came in the javelin (100-1) and discus (86-11) while

Carly Sedun complete the throwing sweep with a toss of 34-5.75 in the shotput. Megan Rider claimed the high jump (4-8) with Malayna Van Winkle finishing things up by clearing 7-1 in the pole vault. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girl’s lacrosse team snapped a three-game slide on April 10th with a 14-13 win over Berks Catholic. The Lady Bears used a 9-7 second half to overcome a 6-5 deficit at intermission. Cyrose Conteh led the Bears with five goals and one assist. Jaide Epler (4g, 1a) and Kate Weissend (3g, 1a) also did a bit of giving with their scoring while Marena Lonardi picked up the final two scores. Corrie Baker secured the win with 10 saves. E-town ended up with a threegame slide, suffering losses to Hershey and Lampeter-Strasburg which followed a Hempfield loss. Conteh accounted for the lone score in the 181 loss to Hershey on the 6th with Baker picking up four saves. The Lady Bears were able to stay close to Lampeter-Strasburg on the 8th but nine Kelsey Kimmel goals allowed the Pioneers to pull away for the 15-9 win. Conteh led the offense again this time with four scores while Weissend (2g, 2a), Lonardi (2g) and Sami Shutt (1g) also contributed. Baker tallied 11 saves in goal.

BASEBALL The baseball team used a 12-9 triumph over Penn Manor on April 10th to snap their two-game slide. Michael Baker got the start but ended up with a no decision, exiting during Manor’s six run fourth that flipped E-town’s 6-2 lead to an 8-6 deficit. Hunter Murray took over from there and was able to pick up the win despite surrendering the Comets final three runs. Kyle Welch paced the offense with a three hit, three RBI day highlighted by a two-run single in the fifth that knotted the game at 8-8 and a one run double in the sixth that plated Elizabethtown’s final run. Manheim Township handed the Bears the first of those two losses, claiming a 3-1 final on the 8th. Cole Patrick took the loss, allowing all three Blue Streak runs during six innings of work. Baker closed out the game with a hitless seventh, keeping it a 3-1 game. Patrick picked up the Bears lone RBI with a fourth inning sac fly that plated Nick Kreider who opened the inning with one of his two singles. One day later it was a 6-1 loss to Ephrata where the Mountaineers ended any E-town comeback bid with a three run sixth, flipping a close 3-1 game into the 6-1 final. Javan Thomas drove in Elizabethtown’s lone run with a fifth inning single while Welch, Kreider, Murray, Jake Black and Matt Ramsey all picked

up one hit each. Kreider got the start and took the loss after allowing four of the six Mountaineer runs during five innings of work. Baker finished up the final inning, tacking two strikeout and one walk to Kreider’s six K’s and four free passes. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team saw their co-leader status in Section Two disappear on April 4th. The reason was a 3-0 loss to Manheim Central who took sole possession of first place by topping the Bears 25-23, 25-15, 25-17. Nate Seeger, with one ace and 23 assists, and Nicholas Chapman, with one ace and 10 kills, led the offense while Jake Sevcik, with 11 digs, and Rudolf Woitas, who put up two blocks led the defense. Casey Lyons wrapped the team leaders up with one ace. The Bears regrouped one day later with a 3-1 win over Spring Grove. The Rockets claimed game one 26-24 but E-town ripped off three straight by scores of 25-23, 25-18 and 25-23 to leave Spring Grove victorious. Seeger dished out 44 assists with Jacques Mortha (15 kills and two aces) on the receiving end of a lot of them. Sevcik tallied another 13 digs and two aces. Gavin Gilhool added three blocks and Woitas two aces in the winning effort. Elizabethtown added another 3-1 win, this one over Hershey on April 8th, See E-town pg 14

Chargers Split with Harrisburg, High Point Eagles, and fell 5-2, for their second loss of the season. After holding a 2-0 lead into the top of the fifth, MC allowed the Eagles back into the game with a two-run top of the fifth that leveled the scoreboard, and then go ahead with a three-run seventh inning. “We played well, but just couldn’t execute in a few pivotal moments,” acknowledge Sintic. Stewart started on the mound for the Chargers, striking out an impressive five Eagle batters and only walking one in five innings of work. Stewart also led at the plate with a RBI double, driving home Dakota Lamb, who reached on a single in the bottom of the first to give the Chargers the initial lead. Nathan Lerro, Wyatt Lamb, and T. Masters each added a hit to the MC resume, but only Masters able to complete his trip around the bases, scoring on an Eagle fielding error in the fourth. “As a team, we obviously don’t like to lose, but we’re learning a lot Photo by Cheri Sine Mt. E-town from pg 14 topping the Trojans with wins of 25-20, 25-21 and 30-28, offsetting the 25-21 game two loss. Gilhool finished with three blocks while Chapman added three aces and three blocks. Sevcik hustled for 17 digs while Seeger (32 assists) and Mortha (10 kills) played their usual parts. The Bears finished their threematch run on the 9th with a 3-0 sweep of Lebanon. The Cedars were no match for Elizabethtown in the opening game with the hosts cruising to a 25-10 win. Lebanon stepped things up in games two and three but E-town was able to win comfortably with scores of 25-17 and 25-19. Seeger led the way with 25 assists and five aces. Mortha missed a double digit kill tally, settling for eight. Sevcik was credited with 14 digs while Woitas added two blocks. SOFTBALL The Lady Bears softball team did not enjoy their trip to Neffsville on the 8th, retuning with a 12-2, five inning loss. Elizabethtown scored both of their runs in the third, cutting Township’s lead to 3-2 before things got out of hand. Alyssa Hamilton and Kristin Geesey were responsible for those runs with each player poking an RBI single for two of E-town’s five hits. Geesey also took the loss for her four and one-third innings in the circle. She was hit with 10 of the Lady Streak runs but only two were earned due to four E-town errors. Brooke Bryan pitched the final twothirds of an inning, allowing the final two unearned runs for Township. The Lady Bears bounced back one day later with an 11-1 shellacking of Ephrata. Geesey covered all five innings to get the win and allowed just one hit while striking out eight and walking none. She helped her cause with a three hit, three RBI day while both Hamilton and Megan Gray finished with two hits, one RBI. The Lady Bears moved to 6-3 on the season with a 9-4 win over Penn Manor on the 10th. Geesey enjoyed another round as the winning pitcher and offense kingpin while receiving help from Hamilton and Brianna McCaulley. Hamilton and McCaulley combined for three hits and split two RBI while Geesey rapped out four singles to collect three RBI. Geesey picked up the win

adding four strikeouts and no walks to four Penn Manor hits and runs. Elizabethtown picked up their only non-L-L win on April 4th by topping Mechanicsburg 14-8. Geesey earned another complete game win despite the Wildcats collecting nine hits and eight runs. The Lady Bears benefited from five Mechanicsburg

errors as well as big games from Geesey, Hayden Calaman and Sadie Seaman. The trio combined for five hits and seven RBI with the big blow being Geesey’s three run blast in the sixth. Calaman picked up two RBIs with a third inning triple while Seaman split hers between a fourth inning single and a fifth inning walk.

Chargers from pg 13 first and greatest commandment. And the second is like it: ‘Love your neighbor as yourself.” (Matthew 22:37-39 NIV). “Each week our captains lead our team devotions, and have done a great job encouraging each other on what these verses look like as a team,” explained Sintic. “Our time

spent studying as a team has helped us see beyond the game of baseball, and I’ve been encouraged to see spiritual growth taking place this season along with physical skills.” Senior outfielder and captain, David Ellis, took the opportunity to share with the team what he has been learning from the passage. “To love God is our number one priority, and love others as

ourselves,” summarized Ellis pointing out to the team that a person’s self-worth is to be established by God. “Loving God is the key to loving yourself and loving the people around you.” A fitting reminder as the team looks just ahead to a time of Easter celebration of a risen Savior, Jesus Christ, who demonstrated the fullest extent of this love, by laying His very life down for sinners

heart disease and stroke. The top fundraiser was secondgrader Elizabeth Kline, who raised $530. She was followed by firstgrader Ryker Caruso and secondgrader Nathan Kreisher, who raised $500 and $400, respectively. The school’s biennial fundraiser was held during the students’ gym class. In teams of three, students jumped for one minute; exercised for a minute doing stretches, exercises, or dance moves; and then rested for one minute. They continued that rotation during their 45minute gym class. For 40 years, the AHA has been partnering with schools to help students improve their own health and raise funds for research to help fight heart disease and stroke. Besides promoting cardiovascular health, the students from Rheems learned about the benefits of physical activity and living a heart-healthy lifestyle, as well as the importance of giving back to the community. Through the past five Jump Rope for Heart fundraisers, the school has raised more than $50,000 for the AHA. Lori DiRisio, physical education teacher, coordinated the program at Rheems.

Elizabethtown Area High School orchestra students Sean Brown, violin, and Mayelin Ebersole, viola, recently took part in the 2019 Pennsylvania Music Educators Association Central Region Orchestra Festival held at the Performing Arts Center in Williamsport. Dr. Gerardo Edelstein, director of orchestras at Penn State University, conducted the ensemble of about 100 talented high school musicians.

A team of judges, composed of local music teachers, selected the students to the Central Region Orchestra based on their performance at the District 7 festival held in January. Participants at the regional level represented the top orchestra students from not only District 7, which covers Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties, but also District 8, which

consists of Bradford, Columbia, Lycoming, Montour, Northumberland, Snyder, Sullivan, Tioga, and Union counties. This is the second time that Ebersole has played in the regional orchestra and the third time that Brown has earned the honor. The high school’s orchestra director is Rich Winey.
