Giving Back To GEARS BY CATHY MOLITORIS
Every morning on their way to school, Cathy Koenig and her son, Cobe Kiehl, like to remember two things: be kind and help someone. Cobe took that mantra to heart recently when he saved money to buy toys, games, art supplies and sporting equipment for his classmates in the beforeand after-school class of GEARS at Bear Creek School. Cobe is a third-grader at Bear Creek, and he’s been attending the GEARS program since kindergarten. One day, he got an idea of how to help his classmates. “I came home that day, and I said, ‘Mom, I want to donate money to GEARS,’” Cobe recalled. “Everything they have done for me is See GEARS pg 4

Experience A Taste Of Western Lancaster County BY CATHY MOLITORIS
“This is the most fun you’ll ever have in the library - and the loudest,” said Kevin Engle, describing A Taste of Western Lancaster County, which will be held at the Elizabethtown Public Library, 10 S. Market St., on Friday, April 29. “There is no ‘shushing’ that night.” The library and the Rotary Club of Elizabethtown will
host the event from 4:30 to 9 p.m. “We’ll have 20-plus vendors, featuring local restaurants, breweries, wineries and other food purveyors,” noted Engle, Rotary chair for the event. “They’ll be set up on all three floors of the library, and the idea is to get a taste, a sample of what they offer.” Participating vendors will include Fuego Latino, The Gathering Place, Black Gryphon, Isaac’s Restaurant
& Deli, McCleary’s Pub, Gene Wenger’s Meats & Fine Foods, Funk Brewing, Moo-Duck Brewery and Cox Brewing Company. “ We invite anybody in this region of the county to participate as a vendor,” Engle explained. “It’s anywhere Elizabethtown residents would go to eat, and that could be out of the county as well.” The public is invited to vote for their favorites, and prizes will be
awarded based on the most votes received for best entrée, best appetizer, best dessert, best beverage and best in show. The winners will receive a plaque to display at their establishment and will be recognized at a banquet on a future date. Live music will be performed throughout the evening from Josh Leik, Don Grabowski, Selene and a quartet of students from Elizabethtown Area High School.

This is the 14th year for the event, which has grown significantly over the years, said Deb Drury, chief executive officer of the library. “The first year was very small, but the response from the community has been amazing, and it continues to be,” she stated, noting that the event raises money for both the library and the Rotary Club. “This is a significant fundraiser for both (groups).” Funds from the event will help the library with programming, including the Summer Reading Program, and will be used by the Rotary Club for a variety of community projects. Drury emphasized that the Taste would not be possible without the support of sponsors, including White Family Dental, the event’s major supporter.
Engle encourages everyone to get a ticket for the Taste, where they can meet up with old friends or make new ones. “It’s been called ‘the Elizabethtown reunion,’” he shared, explaining that many people come to the event year after year. Still, Drury said, it’s also a nice way to get to know Elizabethtown. “If you’re new to town or new to this event, it’s a great opportunity to meet people and get to the know the community,” she remarked. “It’s low-pressure.” A Taste of Western Lancaster County is open to anyone age 21 and older. Tickets may be purchased in person at the Elizabethtown Coffee Company, located within the library, or by searching for “Taste of Western Lancaster County” at www.eventbrite.com.

Melissa Carroll participates in last year’s River Towns Plein Air event.
“Traditionally, this art form is done with live fish, but we’ll be using rubber fish. Kids will receive a free T-shirt while supplies last, and they’ll print their fish right on the shirt.” The event will be held from noon to 3 p.m. at the school’s gym, located at Apple and Waterford avenues. The plein air event will wrap up with a three-day exhibit of the completed work, held in the rear building of Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St. It will take place from 5 to 9 p.m. on Friday, April 29; from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 30; and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Sunday, May 1. Members of the public are invited to view the art and vote for their favorite for the
People’s Choice award. This year’s exhibit will feature both juried and non-juried artists, and the competition’s juror, Lou Schellenberg, will have an exhibit of his own work at MH Gallery, 42 W. Market St., Marietta, from April 30 through May 1. The plein air artwork will be for sale, and proceeds will benefit both the Marietta Community House and Rivertownes PA USA. “Come out and watch the quick draw, and come see the show,” Hines said. “This event was very well-received last year, and we’re really excited to do it again.” For more information on River Towns Plein Air 2022, visit www.mariettaartalive .com/pleinairevent.

On Saturday, April 23, the streets of Marietta will be full of artists in action. They’ll be taking part in a quick draw competition as part of River Towns Plein Air 2022, an art event that focuses on pieces created outdoors, or “en plein air.” “The quick draw is something we added this year,” said Marietta Art Alive! member Marita Hines. Marietta Art Alive! is the organizer of the plein air event that debuted last year. “(The quick draw is) open to anyone who is participating in the plein air competition as well as to anyone age 18 or older.” Participants may sign up for the quick draw online at www .mariettaartalive.com/qd, or they can register in person from 8 to 10 a.m. on April 23. “The streets will be closed, and they’ll set up their easels
in the street,” Hines noted. “Beginning at 10 a.m., they’ll have two hours to finish their painting.” The quick draw is just one part of River Towns Plein Air 2022, which will feature 60 artists painting in outdoor areas throughout the river towns from April 18 through Wednesday, April 27. “Last year, we had specific sites for the artists to set up and the public to come out and watch them work, but we found that the artists prefer to find their own spots or paint something that caught their eye,” Hines stated. “The quick draw will give the public a chance to see the artists at work.” On Sunday, April 24, the event will feature a family activity spotlighting the Japanese art of gyotaku, or fish painting. “We’re partnering with the Susquehanna Waldorf School,” Hines said.

Even if he got $5 for something, he put it right into his bank.” Koenig noted that Cobe has a new goal for his next project: He’d like to invite others to help him. “He’s trying to get some other kids involved,” Koenig said. “He’d like to have other kids help him with whatever he does next.” As a thank-you to Cobe, GEARS staff members will plant a butterfly bush in his honor at the community center, located at 70 S. Poplar St. “I’m going to get to dig the hole for it, so that’s really cool,” Cobe said. Cobe encourages other kids to give back like he has, adding, “If you have dreams, then follow them. … One kid can make a difference.” Although the donation was Cobe’s idea, he’s quick to give credit to others for its success. “My friends and family helped me by giving me money,” he said. “It wasn’t really just me who did this. It was everybody that loves me.”

just wonderful, and I really like GEARS. I love all my teachers, and I like all my friends at GEARS.” Cobe - who lives in Elizabethtown with his mom; his dad, Greg Kiehl; a hermit crab; a fish; and a dog - began saving money he received from friends and family for his birthday and Christmas. “He also did some chores around the house for money,” Koenig stated. It took him almost two years to save enough money to reach his goal, and in February, he told his teachers at GEARS that he’d like to make a donation. He worked with the staff to purchase board games, kickballs, scooters, Play-Doh, Kinetic Sand and more for his classmates. “My teacher showed my class everything and they were so excited,” Cobe said. “They were like, ‘What’s this? What’s this?’ and then she told them, ‘Cobe donated it,’ and everybody was saying, ‘Thank you, Cobe!’” This wasn’t the first time Cobe had given back to his community. Last year, he donated money and gift bags to residents at the ECHOS shelter, and he hopes to begin another collection to donate

Play Ball! BY CATHY MOLITORIS
It’s been said that there’s no crying in baseball, but you know what there is in church softball? Camaraderie, kinship and a little bit of competition. For decades, the Donegal Area Church Softball League (DACSL) has been offering players a chance to get out on the field and indulge in a game they love. At its peak, the league featured 28 teams from towns in the region, including Elizabethtown, Mount Joy, Hershey, Middletown and Mountville. Today, the league is composed of nine teams, which play a 13-week regular season followed by two weeks of playoffs. The season runs from mid-April through July. “Church softball is a little more relaxed in terms of competitiveness compared to a rec league,” said John Grosh Jr., president of DACSL. “The players just want to enjoy a fun game of softball. Sometimes, they aren’t the very best softball players, but it doesn’t matter.” While the league is not technically considered coed, since there are separate regulations for coed teams, it does welcome and encourage female players. “We also allow players as young as 12 years
Chuck Jackson (front, third from right) and John Grosh Jr. (front, second from right) with members of the Donegal Area Softball League
old,” Grosh noted. “It’s a good mix of players, and I like that part of it.” Games are played on two fields at the Armstrong World Industries campus, 1507 River Road, Marietta. One of the fields is named for Chuck Jackson, a former Elizabethtown Area High School teacher and active member of the softball league who served as league president for many years and pitched on the Elizabethtown Church of the Brethren team. “I think of him as ‘Mr. Donegal Softball,’” Grosh stated. Grosh, who has been president of the league since 2004, began playing church softball

in the 1970s with the Mount Calvary Church team in Elizabethtown. He moved away from the area for several years, but upon his return, he became a member of another church and today plays on the Hershey Free Church team. Although this season’s teams are already set, Grosh noted that the league is always looking for new players for upcoming seasons. “I would love to have more teams,” he said. “Church softball leagues everywhere have gotten smaller over the past 20 years, but I’d love to see this one grow.” He encourages people to come out to see a game and noted that spectators will be

treated to a game played by people who truly love the sport. “Because these are church teams, you get players with no foul language, and players are careful about displays of emotion and anger,” Grosh said. “We’re interested in fellowship as much as we are in softball. A lot of the players know players on the other teams, and they feel friendly with these guys. These games are a chance to come out to have a good time with people you’ve known for a long time.” A schedule of games can be found at www.dacsl.net. More information about the league can be found at the site or by contacting Grosh at jgrosh@juno.com or 717898-0799.

girl’s lacrosse team after losses to Hempfield, Eastern York and Lampeter-Strasburg dropped the Lady Bears to 0-8 on the season. Elizabethtown nearly pulled out their April 8th clash with Eastern York, falling by a narrow 7-6 final, despite a 63 edge in the second half. Aiesha Rios and Dannielle Bruno paced the offense with two goals each with Josie Spayd and Joy NgaFua splitting the final two scores. Sydney Pope finished with eight saves. One day prior it was an 18-1 loss at the hands of Hempfield. Moira Shott accounted for the lone goal while Pope turned away nine shots. April 11th saw the Lady Bears fall behind LampeterStrasburg 11-3 over the opening half on their way to a 19-6 loss. Pope tallied another 10 saves while Shott, Rios,
Spayd, Bruno, NgaFua and Charley Lengel-Kramer all netted one score. BOYS’ LACROSSE On the boy’s side of the lacrosse world, the Bears are also still in search of that tricky first win with losses to Hempfield, Eastern York and Central York putting the Bears at 0-8 on the season. The boys also suffered a near miss against Eastern York, falling by a 10-8 final with the Golden Knights posting a 3-1 edge in the final frame to secure the victory. Elijah Poulos collected three of those eight scores while Holden Haver and Matthew Cruz picked up two each. Carson NyeSmith accounted for the final score. Connor Alleman finished with five saves. One day prior saw Elizabethtown fall to Hempfield by a 21-3 final with the Black Knights putting the game away thanks to a 15-0 first

half. Poulos netted two of the three scores while Carter Ketchum made the final deposit. E-town followed the loss to Eastern York with a 19-1 setback to Central York on the 11th. Poulos accounted for the lone score while Joe Zink finished with 13 saves. TENNIS The boy’s tennis team suffered just their fourth loss of the season on April 11th. Trent McBride picked up the lone team point in the 6-1 setback to Cedar Crest. Elizabethtown countered that loss with wins over Conestoga Valley and LampeterStrasburg pushing their overall record to 8-4. E-town enjoyed a sweep over the Buckskins on the 6th with Steven Dupler, Luke Risser and Jack Nyveldt joining McBride as singles winners. McBride and Dupler, Risser and Nyveldt as well as
Jared Louie and Emery Morgan accounted for the doubles wins. Against Lampeter-Strasburg on the 8th, E-town was unable to pick up the sweep thanks to a loss at number one doubles but Louie and Morgan kept things from getting out of hand with a win at number two doubles. McBride, Dupler and Risser all posted singles wins. BASEBALL The baseball team broke-up a three-game slide on April 8th, topping Solanco 7-2. Kaden Kimble covered the initial six innings to get the win while Alex Baker covered the final frame. Kimble allowed both Solanco runs to go with six strikeouts and four walks. Mitchell Garber led the offense with a two-hit, three-RBI game, splitting his run production across two singles and a sac fly. Josh See Sports pg 9

Rudy connected for a fourth inning solo shot for one of his two hits. Monday April 11th brought Hempfield to town with the Black Knights leaving after posting a 10-2 win. Cole Chrzanowski accounted for two of Elizabethtown’s three hits, including a tworun shot in the third that made it a 3-2 game before Hempfield pulled away. Pike Burkett, Baker, and Thaddeus Poff combined to cover the seven innings, allowing seven earned runs to go with one strikeout and six walks. SOFTBALL On the softball diamond, the Lady Bears enjoyed two wins by a combined 28-1. The bulk of that damage came from E-town’s 26-0, three inning, shelling of Lebanon on the 12th. Breonna Edgell was in the circle and finished with three strikeouts and one walk to go with one hit and no runs allowed. Carli Zerphey and Sydney Stewart combined for six hits and seven-RBIs while Jess Zimmerman, Astyn Calaman, Nizaly Ortiz-Kreiner and Madison Bell all pushed two runs across. Things were not so easy one day prior with E-town needing an eighth inning rally to secure a 2-1 win over Hempfield. The Lady Bears looked to be on their way to a 1-0 win behind Brooke Bryan’s work in the circle and Stewart’s RBI single in the fifth, but a single Black Knight run in the bottom of the seventh pushed the game to extra innings where Leah Aldous connected for the game winning single.

LANCASTER LANDFILL Lancaster Landfill, LLC is providing notice that a Major Permit Modification Application will be filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Southcentral Regional Office in April 2022. This Application is being submitted to permit the acceptance of select residual waste in the landfill that can be used as an alternate operational cover which requires revision of the Waste Analysis and Classification Plan. Additionally, minor changes are being made to update the Contingency Plan. The Landfill is located in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Copies of the application have previously been forwarded to the appropriate municipality, county and adjacent property owners. This public notification is being provided in accordance with Chapter 271.141(a) of the Pennsylvania Municipal Waste Regulations. As stated above, this request includes the use of select residual waste materials as alternate operational cover, including recycled paper deinking sludge, foams, auto shred fluff material, non-petroleum contaminated soil, soils with different texture classifications, processed construction and demolition waste, and Posi-Shell (a cement-water-fiber product). These waste streams have been previously approved by the PADEP as alternate operational cover materials under the design alternative procedures in §271.231. Lancaster Landfill has been designed and constructed with a dual-liner system meeting the Subtitle D criteria for a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill, and as such was permitted to accept Module-1 residual waste for disposal in the original permit dating back to 1992. To be clear, Lancaster Landfill intends to remain a construction and demolition (C&D) facility. We are simply seeking the ability to use pre-approved residual waste streams as cover to help support the landfill operations and minimize the use of clean soils that consume landfill airspace. In accordance with §271.141(a)(2) the host municipality and county may submit comments to the PADEP within 60 days of receipt of the Application, recommending conditions upon, revisions to and approval or disapproval of the permit, with the specific reasons described in the comments. A copy of the Application will be available for review by the public at the PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Requests to review the Application can be made by calling 717-705-4700. Fees for copying may be charged by the PADEP. The PADEP will accept and consider comments from the public during the permit review. Persons who wish to comment on this application should contact the PADEP at the following address: PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, Attention: John Oren, P.E., 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will offer a special school group student program and four summer camps this year. Registration for all five youth programs is available on www.eventbrite.com and will be filled on a first-come, firstserved basis. There is a perperson cost for each event. STEAM on the Rails will take place on Thursday, May 19, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. and is open to school groups of students in kindergarten through grade six. This educational experience investigates the importance of science, technology, engineering, arts, and mathematics (STEAM) in railroading and in everyone’s daily lives. At stations throughout the museum, students may take part in activities, including interactive behind-the-scenes tours, a live steam demonstration, hands-on art activities, and engaging presentations about historic railroading jobs. There is a cost to attend. Behind the Scenes of Railroading, a virtual summer camp for children ages 9 to 12, will run from Tuesday, June 28, to Thursday, June 30, from 10 to 11 a.m. Campers will explore the museum’s historic railroad equipment, learn about items
in the museum’s collection, spend time with a model train expert from Lionel, create a guided craft project, and collaborate with other campers to solve challenges. Attendees must have internet access and Zoom. Two sessions of Barons and Builders Day Camp will be offered. Both sessions will run from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. daily. The first session will run from Tuesday, July 12, to Friday, July 15, and is designed for children ages 9 and 10. The second session will run from Tuesday, July 26, through Friday, July 29, and is open to campers ages 11 and 12. Campers will explore the museum’s historic railroad equipment on special guided tours; learn about items in the museum’s collection; take a ride on the Strasburg Rail Road, including a bag lunch and a behind-the-scenes visit; receive a Lionel model boxcar for a guided craft project; spend time with a special guest talking about careers in railroading; collaborate with other campers to solve challenges; and receive a camp T-shirt. A Moveable Feast, a virtual summer camp for children ages 9 to 12, will run from 10 to 11 a.m. on Tuesday, Aug. 2, to Thursday, Aug. 4.
Campers will explore the museum’s historic railroad equipment used in transporting food from the farm to the table and in railroad dining, view the railroad dining artifacts in the museum’s collection, receive ingredients for an at-home baking project with a recipe used on Pennsylvania Railroad dining cars, and collaborate with other campers to solve challenges. Participants must have internet access and Zoom. A Sensory Hours program for children and community members with special sensory needs will be offered on most alternate Tuesdays from 3 to 5 p.m. During this time, the museum will reduce lighting and sounds and maintain a low attendance, with quiet spaces set up for breaks. A few of the historic trains will be open, with museum staff present to answer questions. Check Eventbrite for scheduled program dates and registration. A Smithsonian Affiliate, the Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania is one of 24 historic sites and museums administered by the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission as part of the Pennsylvania Trails of History.
