Community Place On Washington Expands BY CATHY MOLITORIS

The need for community services is on the rise in Elizabethtown, and United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) is here to help. The organization operates Community Place on Washington, 61 E. Washington St., and is hard at work constructing a new building on the campus. The new building, located at 105 E. Washington St., is

set to open in October and will double the amount of space available for community programs and services, said Derrick McDonald, UCEA president. Construction began on the project in November of 2020 and continues the growth that the organization has seen over the past few years. In October of 2018, Community Place on Washington opened, fulfilling UCEA’s mission of having See Community Place pg 6

“We are all interested in going into the medical field, and this is giving us an opportunity to have field experience before we even graduate from high school,” said Claire Thomas, a senior at Elizabethtown Area High School. She is one of five students in a morning class that meets at the station in Elizabethtown. Ten students also meet every day in the afternoon.

When it came to raising funds this year for Brittany’s Hope, executive director Mai-Lynn Abel Sahd and her team got creative. “We usually do a big 5K fundraiser in the fall, but we had to scale that down this year,” Sahd said. “So, we came up with this idea of the 5K Mother’s Day Challenge.” The “race your way” event will run from Saturday, May 8, through Saturday, May 15.

Instructor Ryan Runkel leads students (from left) Emma Kreider, Claire Thomas and Makenna Heisey in practicing reviving a patient.

The class takes students through various stations covering everything from bandaging wounds to CPR. “ We provide health care services for the community, and this is a way to continue that while also focusing on the education component of our mission,” said Ryan Runkel, who teaches the class. “There is a big demand right now for EMS providers, so this is great that the school district is interested in this program and that the students are interested in participating.” Junior Ainsley Raybold said the class is fun but challenging. “I love the hands-on training,” she noted. “Ryan puts us through some very tough situations.” For senior Makenna Heisey, the class is providing an opportunity to learn new things and then prove that knowledge. “The tests are pretty difficult,” she stated. “They are not your typical school tests, because they cover a lot of material in a very specific way. That’s definitely the most challenging part of this class.”

Participants may pick the distance of their choice and complete the miles anywhere and any way they choose, from walking to running, biking, inline skating and more. Participants may also choose to celebrate Mother’s Day through the event, Sahd said. “The beautiful piece of this is you have the option to honor or dedicate your race to a mother figure - any woman you respect - and we will write a Mother’s Day card and send it out on your behalf,” she

This year’s race has a special significance for Sahd. Her 5-year-old son, Peter, will be participating. “He told me, ‘I want to race to help boys and girls who need mommies, daddies and toys,’” Sahd said, adding that Peter even picked out a unique team name - Team Dino-mite - to reflect his love of dinosaurs. While Peter will be racing in honor of his grandmother, Sahd encourages anyone with a desire to give back and also honor women to participate in the event. “We can’t all get together as a community like we have in the past, but we can still bring people together in a different way, united for one cause,” she stated. Saving Lives from pg 1 In addition to classroom time, the students complete clinical hours with the EMS staff. “I love being able to go out in the field and actually be on call,” said junior Emma Kreider. Matthew Smedley, a senior, said what happens out in the community is just as educational as what happens in the classroom. “This course is giving us a really good opportunity to experience what happens before someone gets to the hospital,” he said of the ambulance rides, which have found students doing everything from administering oxygen to intubating patients. The class is also providing an opportunity for students who are interested in pursuing a career in medicine to see if it’s a good fit for them, said

Claire, adding, “It’s a way to have some experience in the medical field and gauge your level of interest or see what’s really involved in a career like this before you actually decide to go into it, just in case it’s not for you.” The students will graduate from the class on Saturday, June 5, and will then seek EMT certification by taking a two-part test consisting of written and hands-on elements. Runkel said he hopes to expand the class to other school districts and is also working with Elizabethtown College to offer a class for the community. “One of the things the students don’t even realize they are getting out of this class is they are learning how to apply quick thinking in emergency situations,” he noted. “Every day, they are honing their critical-thinking skills.”

Community Place on Washington is home to Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), as well as Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care, the Elizabethtown Area HUB, Tabor financial services,

UCEA’s food pantry (the Community Cupboard) and the Clothing Barn. The new building will meet the growing needs of ECHOS in particular, McDonald said. “The majority of the new space will be for ECHOS,” he explained. “It will house the ECHOS enrichment center, expanded winter shelter, mental health resources, offices and apartments for their housing programs.”

McDonald noted that the building also has room for additional nonprofits that may be looking to relocate. Funding for the project is provided by Community Development Block Grants through the Lancaster County Redevelopment Authority, and church bonds are being sold to finance the rest of the construction, McDonald said. He added that although the project is well underway, help is needed to be sure it continues. “We often put our list of

For the past few weeks, artists have been painting at outdoor spots all throughout Marietta, Columbia and Wrightsville. They are part of the first River Towns Plein Air event, and their final products will be displayed at an art show and competition at Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., on Friday, April 23, through Sunday, April 25. The show will run on Friday from 5 to 9 p.m.; on Saturday, April 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.; and on Sunday from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. River Towns Plein Air is a project of Marietta Art Alive! (MAA), a group that promotes the enjoyment, creation and

awareness of visual arts and has partnered with Rivertownes PA USA for this event. “Plein air is becoming a really big thing with artists across the country,” said Marita Hines, a member of MAA. “I’ve participated in plein air art competitions regionally, and many of the other artists participating in this event have also.” When the members of MAA came up with the idea for the event, they weren’t sure how it would be received by the art community. They were pleasantly surprised. “We have 60 artists participating, and we had to cut it off at 60,” Hines stated. “We actually have a wait list. We have artists coming from five states - Maryland,

Lady Bears Battle Section 1 Undefeated Knights

BY ERIC PYLES

There are many places a high school athletic team wants to be as they near the midpoint of their season. Searching for their first win is not one of them but that is where the Elizabethtown girl’s lacrosse team finds themselves after losses to Hempfield, Eastern York and Lampeter-Strasburg pushed the Lady Bears to 0-8. E-town opened their most recent three game stretch with a 16-1 loss to Hempfield on the 8th. Hailey Mertz, with help from Josie Spayd, took care of the offense while Jordyn Gutshall turned away 13 shots between the pipes. One day later the Lady Bears traveled to Wrightsville to face Eastern York and came home on the wrong side of a 9-6 final. Gutshall tallied nine

saves this time out while Aiesha Rios scored three goals. After a short weekend rest, E-town welcomed the Pioneers to Jane Hoover Field and Lampeter-Strasburg responded with a 20-1 victory. Rios provided the setup for Elizabeth Carter’s goal with Gutshall finishing with 10 saves. TRACK The track team made their weekly appearance on the 12th, traveling to Quarryville to battle Solanco. The Lady Bears came home a 93-57 winner while the boy’s suffered a 95-55 setback. Despite the loss the boys did mange seven wins with Caiden Herr (110H and 300H) and Ethan Jones (long jump, discus) picking up two apiece. Owen Dommel (400m), Nathan Johnson (800m) and Carlton Wise (pole vault)

rounded out the winners for the boys. The Lady Bears cruised to the win thanks to 11 event victories. Despite all the success Madeline Quinn was the lone winner to take two individual events, topping the 1600m and 3200m races. Adyson Haak, and Jordan DiRisio picked up multiple wins but just one came in an individual event, the 100H for Haak and the 800m for DiRisio. The pair enjoyed some relay success, winning the 1600m relay along with Lilah Drager and Genevieve McDonald. That success continued in the 3200m relay where DiRisio was joined by Charlotte Heisey, Drager and Sierra Kapcsos and the 400m relay where Haak got help from McDonald, Olivia Anson and Lydia Heistand. Ruth Wright picked up the final track win in the 300H. Elizabethtown managed three wins in the field, one each by Abby Sedun (shot put), Francine Ohlson (discus) and Zoe Myers (javelin). VOLLEYBALL It may have taken a few extra weeks but it appears the boys’ volleyball team has found their groove. Proof would be in back-to-back wins over Ephrata and Lebanon to even the Bears record to 2-2. E-town needed all five sets to topple Ephrata on the 12th but behind 38 Bill O’Connell assists and 18 kills from Rudy Woitas the Bears managed a 2325, 25-19, 25-21, 22-25, 15-10 victory. “The first win, especially with a team that has a lot of younger plays is always tough,” said head coach Lamar Fahnestock. “I was very proud both JV and Varsity as they hung tough in an up and down match and ultimately learned how to finish a match.” That success carried over to Etown’s April 13th clash with Lebanon that the Bears claimed 25-20, 25-18 and 25-20. Woitas, with 19 kills and two aces, paced the offense while McCoy and his two blocks led the defense. O’Connell finished with 28 assists and three digs while Damian Tobias chipped in with two aces. Before the Bears could break into the win column, they suffered their second setback, falling to Garden Spot 3-0 on the 9th despite 15 kills from Woitas and 18 assists from Miller. BOYS’ LACROSSE Much like their female counterparts the boy’s lacrosse team has found wins hard to come by. Losses to Hempfield and Central York by a combined 25-2 dropped the Bears to 0-7 on the year. Joe Zink finished with a combined 13 saves while Sam Azzalina and Elijah Poulos accounted for the scores against the Black Knights. TENNIS The boy’s tennis team suffered another non-league loss, their third, falling to Lampeter-Strasburg by a 3-2 final on the 12th. Despite the loss the Bears remain tied atop the Section One standings with a pristine 4-0 mark in section play thanks to wins over Conestoga Valley and McCaskey. E-town topped CV 6-1 on the 8th with Trent McBride, Steven Dupler and Hayden Musser all posting singles

wins. The Bears picked up their remaining three team points in doubles action with McBride/Dupler, Jack Nyveldt/Musser and Aiden Blyler and Quinn Dolan enjoying success. Elizabethtown made quick work of McCaskey on the 9th, winning 7-0. McBride, Dupler and Musser all picked up singles wins with Nyveldt joining them for the sweep. Another sweep went down in doubles play with only Nyveldt and Musser facing a challenge before pulling out a 9-8 (10-8) win. McBride and Dupler picked up an easy 8-1 win while Blyler and Dolan posted an 8-4 final. E-town was unable to solve Lampeter-Strasburg on the 12th, dropping both doubles matches while winning two of three in singles play. Dupler and Nyveldt were responsible for those straight set singles wins. BASEBALL The baseball team has found the frantic pace of the condensed 2021 season difficult, sitting at 2-3 after dropping three of their last four games. The lone vi ctory came on April 8th where E-town slipped by CV 8-7. Ben Wentling picked up the win in relief of Tyler Souders. The pair, along with Jake Black, combined for four strikeouts and three walks. Souders collected two hits and two RBI while Tanner Breault drove in two runs without registering a hit. One day earlier the Bears fell to Lampeter-Strasburg by an 11-0 count. Alex Baker took the loss with Mitchell Garber and AJ Russo seeing action on the mound. E-town managed just two hits with Cael Brandt and Souders picking up one each. April 9th saw the Bears commit five errors in a 5-3 loss to Lebanon. Black was on the hill for all five Cedar runs, taking the loss, but only one was earned, spoiling his eight punchouts. Brandt, Breault and Owen Zell provided the offense with one RBI each. Solanco made it two losses in a row with a 5-2 final on the 13th. Josh Kreider took the loss despite eight strikeouts and no walks. Souders and Josh Rudy drove in one run each. SOFTBALL The softball team slipped an 11-1 win over Lebanon in between losses to Lampeter-Strasburg and Solanco to fall to 4-2 on the year. Brooke Bryan picked up the win over Lebanon, collecting three strikeouts in two innings. Both Astyn Calaman and Maddie Bell finished with three RBI while Nizaly OrtizKreiner smacked a two-run homerun in the second. A few days prior, the Lady Bears suffered an 11-6 setback to Lampeter-Strasburg. Kristin Geesey tossed all seven innings to take the loss while Sophia Finch continued her hot start with a one hit, two RBI game. Megan Gray and Ava Fair combined for three hits and two RBI. Elizabethtown’s second setback came six days later in the form of a 32 loss to Solanco. Geesey finished with five strikeouts and two walks while Fair provided the offense with a two-run single.

Donation Drive, Information Session Posted The Humane Society of Harrisburg Area (HSHA) is preparing for the upcoming kitten season by holding a kitten shower donation drive and hosting a virtual Kitten Shower Foster Parent Event. Spring and early summer is the busiest time at HSHA due to the number of kittens being born, and more kitten items and foster parents are needed. The most needed items during kitten season are canned kitten food, dry kitten food, KMR Formula, cat toys, Miracle Nipples, and pet heating pads. Throughout April, donations may be dropped off at Pet Authority, 3997 Sunnycrest Drive, Harrisburg; Zoomania, 4600 Jonestown Road 195, Harrisburg; McCracken’s Pet & Food, 700 N. Market St., Elizabethtown; Karns, 731 Cherry Drive, Hershey; and Karns, 4870 Carlisle Pike, Hershey.

Donations can also be dropped off at HSHA, located at 7790 Grayson Road, Harrisburg, PA 17111 or shipped directly to the same address. HSHA will host the virtual Kitten Shower Foster Parent learning session on Saturday, April 24, at 5:30 p.m. This event is geared for people who have thought about becoming a foster parent but were not sure if it was right for them. The event will discuss how to get involved, how the process works and the types of fostering available. Seasoned foster parents will be available to answer questions and tell attendees about their fostering experiences. Proceeds from sales of artwork will benefit Marietta Community House. The location is the original home of the Pennsylvania College of Art and Design, and the school will partner with MAA to offer a free intergenerational plein air drawing session from 10 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. on April 24 outside across the street from the exhibit space. The rain date for the class will be April 25. Hines said painting en plein air provides artists with a unique way to create their works. “It’s a challenging way to paint,” she explained. “Factors like the weather and wind can make it challenging. The shadows change, too, so what you’re painting may look one way and then an hour later, it looks very different.” For more information on River Towns Plein Air, visit www.mariettaartalive.com/ pleinairevent.

They started talking about gardening, and the parent mentioned that Kraybill would love to have a gar-
