Students Earn SkillsUSA Awards Elizabethtown Area High School seniors Alexander Miller and Devan Bickhart recently earned awards at the District 5 SkillsUSA event held at the Franklin County Career and Technology Center. Miller placed second in the Mechatronics category, while Bickhart placed third in the Welding category. The Mechatronics competition consisted of three events designed to measure the skills required in the modern automated manufacturing environment. Contestants were required to assemble, adjust, and test an automated machine system; troubleshoot and repair a faulty machine system; and take a comprehensive written test. Competitors in the Welding division received contest drawings and a set of
welding procedure specifications. They had to complete the steel project and weld an aluminum project in various positions using a variety of filler metals. SkillsUSA is a national organization that focuses on preparing students for careers in trade, technical, and skilled service occupations. SkillsUSA offers local, state, and national opportunities for students to learn and practice personal, workplace, and technical skills. The technical competitions are intended to help establish industry standards for job skill training and entry-level workers. SkillsUSA is recognized by the U.S. Department of Education as a successful model of employer-driven youth development training.

Making Masks In Elizabethtown Planting Positivity By Ann Mead Ash
By Leah Sintic
Sheila Hartmann of Elizabethtown first heard about area sewers making masks around the first week in early April. “My daughter Kacy was on (social media) with friends, and she said, ‘Somebody we know is making masks, but she can only do four a day and she is desperately looking for people who sew to help or donate material,’” Sheila recalled. Sheila wasted no time connecting with the friend’s mother, who connected her with a small group of women in Elizabethtown and Mount Joy who were making masks, including Deborah Santiago and Donna Shenk. Before long, that group had joined up with Lancaster Masks Sewists. The mission of Lancaster Masks

opportunities to enjoy the spring weather. Gardening also teaches a life skill in sustainability, and it just might produce a harvest that is both valuable and delicious. “Planting vegetables can be fun and rewarding for the whole family,” pointed out Dan Funk, owner of Funk’s Riverview Greenhouses in Washington Boro. “Some spring vegetables such as lettuce, radishes, and spinach can be planted in April and harvested in May. You can follow up with a second planting in the same soil with another crop such as tomatoes, peppers, and eggplants that will be ready to enjoy later in July,” Funk elaborated. Isolation and stress can be countered by an intentional effort to focus on something positive, and many have found such value in horticulture. “Flowers around the house can brighten your spirit after being inside during this time,” added Funk, suggesting that some area residents may like to try their hand at ornamental plants. For those who wish to add a pop of floral color outdoors but may not have ample yard space, window boxes are one way to dress up a home’s exterior. If produce is the goal, Funk advised picking a location with ample sunlight. “Too much shade and you will just get plant growth without getting any edible product,” Funk advised. For those who are new to gardening, just getting started can be an intimidating endeavor. Or perhaps space is at a premium, causing some to give up before

More than happy to provide guidance, Norma Zimmerman from Zimmerman’s Greenhouse of Ephrata supplied ideas for someone hoping to grow vegetables but lacking yard space. “Healthy homegrown vegetables (can be grown) from your own garden or patio,” she encouraged. “Grape or cherry tomatoes are the easiest tomato to grow for new gardeners, and herbs are also easy to grow in containers.” For the past six years, Community Bible Church in Marietta has offered a creative solution for those who do not have space for a garden but would like to develop a green thumb, offering rototilled plots to interested community members upon completion of an application. A raised bed garden can also be a beneficial option, as it can confine the garden to a small location, allowing cultivators to concentrate their efforts. Other benefits of raised beds include a natural barrier that deters weeds and pests while at the same time holding nutrients, improving drainage, and avoiding compaction. Joshua Wenger of Wenger’s Greenhouse in Lititz emphasized the value of a family gardening project and offered helpful tips for those daunted by the thought of getting started. “Start small, keep it simple the first year, then branch out with experience,” Wenger suggested. “Imported vegetables cannot equal the freshness, taste, and

nutritional value of homegrown fruits and vegetables.” As with any worthwhile endeavor, there are sure to be challenges along the way, but a little effort goes a long way. Taking care of weeds before they get out of control and seeking advice from a seasoned gardener will provide a head start for success. “The Lord has a lot of life lessons to teach us from plants, and the best botany classes are hands-on digging in the dirt and tending growing plants,” Wenger shared. “Dedicate time daily or weekly to weeding, watering, and pruning and you will be rewarded with beautiful flowers and a bountiful harvest.” Lancaster and Chester counties are known for their farms and family-owned operations. Whether the goal is organic, homegrown produce or a refreshing array of blooms, the answers to getting started on a gardening adventure can be found right within the local community.

Effective March 22, the Lancaster Conservancy indefinitely closed the parking area and River Road access to Tucquan Glen and Pyfer Nature Preserves. This decision was made due to overcrowding and a lack of respect for the preserves. Increased visitation as a result of early spring weather combined with people looking for options to get out of the house while nonessential businesses close amid the COVID-19 national emergency have made this already busy preserve unsafe. Tucquan Glen offers only a small 20-car parking area on the narrow River Road. Illegal parking along the road causes congestion and challenges for neighbors, and large crowds and disrespectful visitors required employees to provide policing services, according to Conservancy president Phil Wenger. At this critical time, the Lancaster Conservancy views the opportunity to get out in nature and explore natural lands as an essential quality of life service that the agency is proud to provide for the community’s mental and physical well-being. However, members of the public are asked to be respectful and create distance between themselves and other parties, leash their dogs, and when parking areas are full, move on to another preserve, natural area, or park. Of the conservancy’s 46 nature preserves throughout the region, several have ample parking along with moderate to difficult hiking trails that showcase beautiful streams and the emergence of spring. These include Kellys Run, Pinnacle Scenic Overlook, Welsh Mountain, Shenks Ferry, Climbers Run, Falmouth Forest Garden at Conoy Wetlands, Steinman Run, and Trout Run. Readers may learn about each of these preserves’ hiking trails, histories, flora, and fauna at www.lancaster conservancy.org/preserves/.

Sewists is to coordinate Lancaster County volunteers who are making and distributing masks for high-needs organizations during the COVID-19 pandemic. “Lancaster Masks (was created when) numerous groups came together to form one big group, and it’s just for Lancaster County,” explained Sheila, who said that while the focus of the group is providing masks to health care entities, it makes masks for some businesses as well. Group members donate all work and materials to the cause. Sheila recently received information that the group is currently making three types of masks. Level 1 masks use a special protective fabric that serves health care providers such as emergency medical services crews. Level 2 cotton masks with a filter pocket and ties allow the user to insert a coffee filter into the pocket for added protection. The masks are designed to help health care and human services staff members in the lower risk category such as nursing and group home staff members or residential facility employees. Level 3 fabric masks that utilize either ties or elastic without a pocket will be distributed to health and human services staff members who are at the lowest risk. They may also be utilized by patients or group facility residents. Sheila noted that her masks are made of 100% cotton for breathability. “A lot of women are using quilters cotton,” she said, adding that she chooses plaid-patterned fabrics because she finds them easier and faster to cut. She has

also purchased plaid king-size sheets of a tight weave with a high thread count, and she has ordered wired ribbon for the bridge of the nose on the masks. Sheila has purchased elastic to hold the masks on, as well. She prefers the 1/8-inch elastic, which she said is more comfortable. Sheila explained that the material should be washed in hot water for shrinkage before it is cut. Depending on the destination, the masks may be washed after they are completed and then put in individual plastic locking bags. Sheila said that her first batch of masks was delivered to Lancaster Masks Sewists on April 11. “I spent the middle of the (prior) week cutting out masks,” stated Sheila who shared that it took her two days to cut masks from five yards of fabric. She enlisted her daughter to help, and production began to move more quickly. “Kacy started cutting elastic for me, and what a blessing,” said Sheila. “If you’re a sewist and anyone else in the house can take part (in the work), it really helps.” By the week of April 13, Sheila reported that she was “zipping masks out.” Lancaster Masks has delivered 100 masks to Bayada Pediatrics, a group that serves a medically fragile population of children, including those undergoing chemotherapy. Another 100 masks went to Lancaster Emergency Medical Services (LEMSA), a nonprofit organization serving all or portions of 21 municipalities in Lancaster County. Readers who would like to know more about Lancaster Masks may search for “Lancaster Masks Sewists” on Facebook or email info@lancastermasks.com.

Bingo Game Highlights CCA Students Attend Field Trips Local Businesses The City of Lancaster Office of Promotion and the Lancaster City Alliance recently released a bingo game to promote a safe and fun way to continue shopping and dining in Lancaster city amid the COVID-19 pandemic. The first of four bingo cards will feature city restaurants that offer takeout; cards are available on the @visitlanccity Instagram account or by emailing LOOP@cityoflancaster pa.com. Participants who want to play bingo and compete for a prize will order takeout or delivery from the eateries listed on the card to complete a vertical, horizontal, or diagonal line across the card to achieve bingo. Participants should photograph themselves enjoying the food or just the food itself. Once they complete a line on the bingo card, participants may submit their completed card and photographs by
emailing their photos to LOOP@cityoflancasterpa.com or sending a direct message on Instagram to @visitlanccity with the photos and the marked card attached. Each bingo submitted will be entered into a drawing to receive Downtown Dollars for a dining experience. More than one entry may be submitted. If there are two bingos on one card, that counts as two entries. One winner will be drawn every two weeks. The first two bingo cards will feature restaurants, and the next two cards will feature city retail shops. The bingo idea came from Provo City, Utah. To plan a visit or for event information, readers may visit www.VisitLancasterCity.com. For more information about Lancaster City Alliance, readers may visit www.lancastercity alliance.org.

Sheetz recently announced the expansion of the Kidz Meal Bagz program, which provides free food to help children and families in need as a result of the COVID19 pandemic. Meal Bagz are currently available at all 600 Sheetz locations and will be available all day. The Meal Bagz include a turkey sandwich, chips and a beverage. Families interested in taking advantage of the free Kidz Meal Bagz program can go to any
Sheetz location and ask an employee for a meal at the register or through the drive-through. Meals will be available daily while supplies last. An adult does not need to be present to obtain a meal. According to Travis Sheetz, president & COO, Sheetz will give away approximately 80,000 meals per week across the communities it serves. The program, which began on April 16, will be available for two weeks at which time it will be
re-evaluated based on community need. Additionally, every Sunday from 2 to 3 p.m., Sheetz will reserve all 279 of its locations in Pennsylvania to senior citizens, as well as any customer designated as higher-risk. This initiative started on April 19. Sheetz’s store employees will not be checking IDs of customers during this hour, but the company asks that community members respect this reserved hour.

The Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce (EACC) has announced an opportunity for small businesses to apply for one of 10 grants of $500 each. The grants do not need to be repaid. In 2017, Destination Etown, a partnership between EACC and Elizabethtown College, was selected by Lancaster County Community Foundation’s BB&T Economic Growth Fund program to receive funding designed to stimulate economic growth in the Elizabethtown area. Elizabethtown College contributed $5,000 to the Revolving Loan Fund portion of the program, which is open to active EACC members. In an effort to provide support to local businesses, Elizabethtown College offered to amend the use of its contributed funds from a loan to a grant. The foundation approved the amendment, and the EACC board of directors voted unanimously to provide this opportunity to EACC members. Application for these funds will be available on Thursday, April 30, at noon. The grants will be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis according to the timestamp of the application entry. Participation is limited to active EACC members operating a business that has between one and 10 employees, with two part-time employees equal to one employee. Only one entry per business will be accepted. Business representatives may apply at www.elizabethtowncoc.com/grant -application/.
