Lacrosse Day To Honor Student’s Memory BY CATHY MOLITORIS
olby Hall was just 17 years old when he was killed in a car crash in October 2021. His parents, Don and Melanie Hall of Elizabethtown, are organizing the Colby Hall Memorial Lacrosse Day in their son’s honor. It will be held on Saturday, May 14, beginning at 9 a.m. at the turf field at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St. A senior at EAHS, Colby was a member of the boys’ lacrosse team. “He loved lacrosse,” Melanie said. “It was his passion. He played since third grade, and he made a lot of

C
friends through the sport.” The Halls are hoping the pain of losing their son can be turned into a way to help others. The lacrosse day will be a fundraiser for a scholarship they started in Colby’s memory. “The scholarship will be given annually to a senior member of the boys’ or girls’ lacrosse team at EAHS,” Melanie noted. She invites members of the community to come to the lacrosse day, which will include four games featuring the U12 and U14 teams as well as the boys’ and girls’ high school lacrosse teams. Hosted by the Rheems Athletic Association, the lacrosse day

will be funded by a variety of community sponsors. Sponsors are Donegal Springs Airpark, Albright & Thiry Orthodontics, White Family Dental, Tyson Fence Company, Elizabethtown Family Chiropractic, Garden State Tile, Century Home Improvements, Agency 1 and R.G. Hummer Meat and Cheese. “These are all places that have a personal connection to Colby,” Melanie explained, noting that she was overwhelmed by the support of the community in organizing the day. “People have been very helpful and very thoughtful as we’ve been getting everything together. We’ve been surprised by how many people want to help.” Along with the lacrosse games, a concession stand will have snacks for sale and the event will include a 50/50 giveaway as well as an auction featuring eight Hersheypark tickets. “Colby worked as a lifeguard at Hersheypark last summer and then was employed as a lifeguard at the Hershey Lodge,” Melanie noted, adding that The Hershey Company donated the tickets. Colby attended the Lancaster County Career and Technology Center in Mount Joy and was in the welding program. Along with playing lacrosse for EAHS, he played with the Lebanon Valley Lacrosse Club. “There used to be a lacrosse day years ago in Elizabethtown,” Melanie noted, adding that before Colby died, the Halls talked about bringing it back. “After Colby’s accident, we decided we had to do it. We wanted something to keep his memory alive, and we wanted to help somebody else by providing a scholarship to a lacrosse player.” She also hopes the day will spark interest in the sport her son loved. “It’s a good way for kids to come and see what lacrosse is all about,” she stated. “It’s a sport that’s still growing in popularity in this area, and this is a way to possibly generate some interest among the younger kids.”

Ladybug, Ladybug, Fly Away Home BY CATHY MOLITORIS
On Earth Day, April 22, there were screams of joy and squeals of excitement outside GEARS in Elizabethtown. Students in the preschool and kindergarten programs at the center released thousands of ladybugs into the environment, a culmination of a classroom project. “The students spent time learning about the ladybugs - getting some background knowledge on them like how they grow, learning
vocabulary, learning about their habitats,” said Anthony Carothers, lead kindergarten teacher and site director. “It’s an opportunity to engage the students in hands-on learning, which is something we strive to do here.” Wendy Musser, GEARS director, came up with the idea for the ladybug release last year. “She wanted to do something different, since a lot of classes do butterflies,” Carothers recalled. “The kids loved it last year, and we were really excited to do it again this year.” See Ladybug pg 4

According to Homeless Shelters Directory, there are an estimated 950 homeless individuals in Lancaster and Chester counties. It costs Good Samaritan Services (GSS) $35 to provide a night of shelter, two meals, supplies, and compassionate care to an individual. That is about one-third the cost of a hotel per night. In preparation for the ladybug release, the students not only learned about the different parts of the insect, but also completed arts and crafts projects including paper ladybug hats they wore during the release. “We read books on ladybugs and incorporated literacy into the project,” Carothers stated. “We worked in math themes. We compared and contrasted the ladybugs to butterflies. We talked about how butterflies undergo metamorphosis

as they change from a caterpillar to a butterfly, while ladybugs hatch from an egg. It was such a good topic that we could use across multiple content areas.” The students also discussed the benefits of releasing ladybugs into the environment. “They learned that ladybugs are great for plants,” Carothers noted. “Ladybugs eat aphids, which can destroy plants.” On the day of the release, more than 30 students - ranging in age from 3 to 6 years old - lined up, donned their paper hats and waited patiently for their teachers to open the mesh cage containing the ladybugs. Some students eagerly approached and accepted a ladybug on their outstretched hands, while others held back, a little unsure. After a few moments, all of the students were engaged in gently placing ladybugs on trees or allowing the insects to fly off on their own. Giggles and squeals permeated the air as the students watched the small creatures get used to their new home. “This project has been a lot of fun, and the kids have been really excited about it,” Carothers said. “It’s a great way to get them excited about learning.”

PUBLIC NOTICE OF SUBMISSION OF MAJOR PERMIT MODIFICATION APPLICATION FOR WASTE TYPES LANCASTER LANDFILL Lancaster Landfill, LLC is providing notice that a Major Permit Modification Application will be filed with the Pennsylvania Department of Environmental Protection (PADEP) Southcentral Regional Office in April 2022. This Application is being submitted to permit the acceptance of select residual waste in the landfill that can be used as an alternate operational cover which requires revision of the Waste Analysis and Classification Plan. Additionally, minor changes are being made to update the Contingency Plan. The Landfill is located in Mount Joy Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Copies of the application have previously been forwarded to the appropriate municipality, county and adjacent property owners. This public notification is being provided in accordance with Chapter 271.141(a) of the Pennsylvania Municipal Waste Regulations. As stated above, this request includes the use of select residual waste materials as alternate operational cover, including recycled paper deinking sludge, foams, auto shred fluff material, non-petroleum contaminated soil, soils with different texture classifications, processed construction and demolition waste, and Posi-Shell (a cement-water-fiber product). These waste streams have been previously approved by the PADEP as alternate operational cover materials under the design alternative procedures in §271.231. Lancaster Landfill has been designed and constructed with a dual-liner system meeting the Subtitle D criteria for a Municipal Solid Waste (MSW) Landfill, and as such was permitted to accept Module-1 residual waste for disposal in the original permit dating back to 1992. To be clear, Lancaster Landfill intends to remain a construction and demolition (C&D) facility. We are simply seeking the ability to use pre-approved residual waste streams as cover to help support the landfill operations and minimize the use of clean soils that consume landfill airspace. In accordance with §271.141(a)(2) the host municipality and county may submit comments to the PADEP within 60 days of receipt of the Application, recommending conditions upon, revisions to and approval or disapproval of the permit, with the specific reasons described in the comments. A copy of the Application will be available for review by the public at the PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110. Requests to review the Application can be made by calling 717-705-4700. Fees for copying may be charged by the PADEP. The PADEP will accept and consider comments from the public during the permit review. Persons who wish to comment on this application should contact the PADEP at the following address: PADEP Southcentral Regional Office, Attention: John Oren, P.E., 909 Elmerton Avenue, Harrisburg, PA 17110. ET Baseball Wins Three of Last Five
The phrase ‘better late than never’ typically does not apply to baseball but with a bit of massaging one can make it work for the E-town baseball team. The Bears stumbled to a 2-6 mark but with three wins over their last five, E-town has clawed their way to a 5-8 record heading into the home stretch. The first of those wins came on April 20th via an 8-3 final over Cedar Crest. Alex Baker paced the offense with four RBI while Mitchell Garber and Ben Wentling provided backup with one RBI each. Isaiah Shayter scattered nine hits over seven innings and finished with nine strikeouts to earn the win. The second win came on the 23rd with a 14-5 against Reading. E-town plated 12 runs in the sixth flipping a 5-2 deficit into the 14-5 win. Kaleb Daley was the beneficiary of that surge, taking over for Pike Burkett in the sixth and picking up the win. The pair combined for 12 strikeouts and no walks. Luis Perez-Alfaro pushed a run across with each of his three hits while Garber and Elijah Macfarlane split four RBI. Elizabethtown’s final win of the stretch came on the 26th with a 6-1 final over McCaskey. Shayter pitched another gem, with 11 punchouts and one run on five hits. Ben Heckman covered the final two outs. Jonathan Hinkle collected two RBI on two hits while Perez-Alfaro had one hit and two RBI. Mixed between those wins were losses to Lebanon, 7-4 on the 21st and Warwick on the 25th. Garber, Perez-Alfaro, and Baker covered the offense with seven of Elizabethtown’s eight hits and all four of their RBI against Lebanon. Garber fronted

Another 8-4 final followed on the 25th only this time Elizabethtown was on the wrong side, falling to Warwick. Bryan took the loss after pitching all seven innings but helped her own cause with a fourth inning RBI single. Zook added a RBI single in the fifth. Elizabethtown bounced back on the 26th with a 15-0, three inning win over McCaskey. Breonna Edgell picked up the “W” thanks to two RBI games from Sydney Stewart, Finch, Leah Aldous, Nizaly Ortiz-Kreiner and Madison Bell. TRACK The track team closed out April with losses to Ephrata on the 25th, 93-57 for the Lady Bears and 113-37 on the boy’s side. Points were difficult to find for the boys with only Jaycen Conrad (3200m) and Carlton Wise (pole vault) posting a win. The Lady Bears earned points with two relay wins, taking the 400m and in the 1600m. Ali Fink won the 1600m with Julie McAlonis taking the 3200m. Anna Rank (pole vault) and Charlotte Hershey (shot put) rounded out the victors. Elizabethtown made the short trek to Elizabethtown College on the 23rd to take part in the Blue Jay

Invitational where the boy’s finished 10th and the girls 3rd. The Lady Bears were buoyed by a win in the 3200m relay, silver in the 400m relay and fourth in the 1600m relay. Rank added a silver in the pole vault while Hershey
(shot put) and Heistand (400m) tacked on bronze. For the boys it was two bronze producing relays coupled with a third-place finish from Juan Lopez in the 400m paving the way. Taidou N’Dikwe was fifth in the 400m.

BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team was not able to find a similar grove with losses to Warwick and Cedar Crest dropping the Bears to 0-11. Elizabethtown fell to Warwick by an 8-4 final on the 21st and to the Falcons by a 9-7 final on the 25th. Elijah Poulos, Carson Nye Smith, Holden Haver, and Hayden Klose picked up one goal each against Warwick with NyeSmith and Addison Johnson going for two scores against Cedar Crest. Haver tacked on two scores and Matthew Cruz one in the loss to Crest. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team split a pair of matches, falling to York Suburban on the 25th after knocking off Ephrata on the 21st. Both ended in a 3-0 final with Elizabethtown posting wins of 25-12, 25-15 and 25-21 to top Ephrata. Dylan Shepperd (16 assists) and Bryan Murray (nine kills) led the offense while Elijah Miller (12 digs) and Cooper Torborg (three blocks) led the defense. SOFTBALL The softball team hit a rough patch, going 2-2 over their last four to sit at 8-4 with seven games remaining. The rough patch started on the right track with a 5-4 win over Cedar Crest on the 20th but losses to Penn Manor and Warwick followed before a win over McCaskey put the Lady Bears back on track. Brooke Bryan scattered 12 hits while allowing four runs but still managed the win over Cedar Crest with help from own bat. She plated a single run in the second with a single which Astyn Calaman matched in the fourth. Ave Fair matched both with RBI singles in the second and fourth to lead the way. The Lady Bears were unable to get by Penn Manor on the 21st, falling by a 7-2 final with Bryan taking the loss. She struck out five to go with 11 hits and no walks. Julie Zook produced the lone RBI with her second inning sac fly.

that trio with three hits and two RBI including a two-run blast in the second. Kaden Kimble took the loss for his five innings on the mound while Daley covered the final two innings. A quartet of pitchers were needed in the 9-3 loss to Warwick on the 25th with Baker getting the start and taking the loss. Hackman covered one inning, Daley two-thirds of a frame while Thaddeus Poff was chased before recording an out. Garber posted another multi-hit, multi-RBI game, going for two of each while Hinkle added one hit and one RBI. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The E-town girl’s lacrosse team wanted no part of another losing streak after snapping their 28game slide. So, the Lady Bears went out and picked up two more wins along with a tie. The rare tie came on the 25th in a 10-10 final with Conestoga Valley. Three goals apiece by Moira Shutt and Dani Bruno along with five Sydney Pope saves were not enough to avoid a deadlock. Charley Lengel-Kramer tacked on two scores while Aiesha Rios and Hailey Mertz added one goal each. Elizabethtown made it two wins in a row by topping Mechanicsburg 12-2 on the 20th. Pope needed just six saves thanks to a trio of hat tricks by Shutt, Mertz and Bruno. Josie Spayd added two scores while Rios picked up the final tally. The Lady Bears returned to the LL for a 14-10 win over Lancaster Country Day on the 26th. E-town posted a 7-5 edge in both halves with nine Pope saves just enough. Bruno led the attack with seven goals while Lengel-Kramer and Spayd added two each. Shutt, Rios and Joy NgaFua cleaned up the remaining scores.

The 31st annual exhibit may be viewed during museum hours and by appointment. Each year, the museum’s Quilt Committee gathers and display quilts from community sources, with each locally made quilt’s history and process information presented alongside it. The museum’s log rooms, dating to the mid-1700s and early 1800s, are the backdrop for the show. This year, over 25 vintage and modern quilts from the community will be on display, including a featured collection of antique and contemporary interpretations of the Victorian crazy quilt. and it’s being made even better with what GSS does every day,” stated Rachel Stebbins, EPC marketing director. “The Golf Outing is a fun way to enjoy the great outdoors, meet some fellow do-gooders, and help put a dent in homelessness!” Preregistration is required and can be completed up to 48 hours before the event. since June 1999. By 2002, GSS purchased its first property in Phoenixville, where it was able to provide five people at a time with emergency housing. Currently, GSS owns 14 properties, totaling 100 beds and over 30,000 square feet. GSS came to the Lancaster County area in 2011 when it opened an emergency shelter in Ephrata, which provides housing for women and children. GSS provides a full continuum of care to individuals and families that are experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness. Some of the services offered by GSS include eviction prevention, case management services, emergency shelter, transitional housing, affordable housing, and permanent housing services across Lancaster and Chester counties. The organization’s end goal is to empower people to feel confident and capable enough to maintain their own safe and stable housing. Since July 1, 2021, GSS has served 475 people, and more than 200 individuals have graduated from the organization’s programs and are in stable housing. Starting this year, GSS will offer its clients in-house counseling, and it will expand the women’s shelter in Ephrata. The organization also opened a men’s shelter in Ephrata on April 1. Ninety-seven percent of GSS’ funding comes from community donations and fundraisers such as the annual Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) Golf Outing. The 15th annual EPC Golf Outing will

Greg Grove (center) at a camp in Ghana in January
is providing a summer camp program, where the kids get together to do fun activities, learn about Jesus, do crafts, play games,” Grove explained. “It’s something the kids really look forward to. They get three warm meals a day and they get to sleep on a mattress, which is something they don’t normally get to do.” Grove noted that it costs $50 to send a child to camp and that funding is provided by both the 5K proceeds and additional donations. Last year, 600 children attended the camps. Grove has gone to the camp for four years, including this past January. His race co-directors, Keith Franz and Kirk Belmont, have also attended the camp.
Grove noted that Arm of Hope began as a ministry of Hope Community Church but was recently granted nonprofit status as its own organization. Along with a donation to participate in the race, people are encouraged to participate in peer-to-peer fundraising to multiply their impact. The top fundraisers will receive thank-you gifts including sweatshirts and YETI stainless-steel tumblers. To register for the Arm of Hope 5K, visit www.armofhopeinghana.org/5K. Same-day registration at the site will be available, but participants who register online by Saturday, May 7, will receive a race T-shirt.

Each step you take on Saturday, May 21, can make a difference in a child’s life. The ninth annual Arm of Hope 5K will be held beginning at 9 a.m. at Hope Community Church, 1806 Harrisburg Ave., Mount Joy. Proceeds will benefit Arm of Hope, a Ghanaian-run ministry. “It’s a fun event for a great cause,” said Greg Grove, one of the race directors, noting that the course is mostly flat and very family-friendly. “We take walkers, strollers, dogs, families. If you’re a serious runner, we have trophies, but if you just want to come and walk the course, you are welcome.” The top male and female finishers will receive hand-carved trophies from Ghana, while baked goods will be awarded to the winners in various age groups. “We’re really excited to bring the baked goods back,” Grove said, explaining that the treats were not offered after the race for the past two years in the height of the pandemic. “Volunteers at the church make the baked goods and everyone loves them.” Additionally, a variety of door prizes will be available for all participants. Registration for the 5K is by donation only, with proceeds helping to fund programs for children living in the slums of Ghana. “Part of the Arm of Hope ministry
