Students Unveil Meaningful Mural blueprint, communicating with teachers or administrators, and organizing time during class and outside of school to work on fulfilling their vision. Gracie and Corrie decided to team up for the project and after brainstorming ideas settled on the possibility of creating a mural inside of EAHS. Corrie had visited the high school in Salt Lake City, Utah, where the movie “High School Musical” was filmed and liked how the building had an entire hallway covered in colorful murals. The girls surveyed EAHS teachers to gauge Elizabethtown Area High School seniors (from left) Katie Bomboy, Gracie Mummau, interest levels and see what they and Corrie Baker collaborated to create a mural in one of the school’s main hallways. thought about the idea of adding a mural with a positive message to the reached out to a professional artist so we decided to see if we could do it school. “The teachers were super who creates murals with positive ourselves,” Corrie said. “I knew Katie messages at schools around the was really good at art, so we asked supportive of it,” recounted Gracie. What started as a class project in the fall semester for Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) seniors Gracie Mummau and Corrie Baker ended up extending into spring, and now the mural that the students enlisted the help of classmate Katie Bomboy to create will be on display for many years to come. Students who take the Mind and Body elective course taught by Shane Kargo in the fall are responsible for completing a semester project of their choosing as individuals or small groups. “It needs to be an original idea and something to help the school or make a difference in the community,” Kargo explained. In addition to choosing a project and mission, the students take ownership of conducting research, creating their own assessment rubric, setting guidelines, developing a

MERCHANDISER - Elizabethtown Edition -

The plot revolves around Bobby, a 35-year-old bachelor who finds himself unable to fully commit to a longterm relationship - despite having multiple girlfriends. Josh Schwartz, who will be making his SSC debut portraying Bobby, explained that his character instead gets to see the ins and outs of marriage through all of his married friends. “He seems to live vicariously through his friends over the course of the show,” Schwartz said. “Most of the time he views marriage through a negative lens.” The original production, with book by Furth and music and lyrics by Sondheim, was nominated for numerous Tony Awards and won Best Musical, Best Book of a Musical, Best Score, Best Lyrics, Best Direction of a Musical, and Best Scenic Design. Director Jim Johnson noted that, when it opened in 1970, “Company” was groundbreaking as a musical for both its style and the way that it examined adult relationships. “It changed musical comedy in the way that it presented a nonlinear look at marriage for the first time on stage,” described Johnson. Instead of following the previously standard chronological storyline, “Company” is made up of vignettes linked together by Bobby’s birthday celebration. “It’s an examination of marriage - what works and what doesn’t,” Johnson said. “It’s a very thoughtful, provocative musical.” Four of the five married couples that are Bobby’s friends in the SSC show also happen to be portrayed by real-life couples - a fun twist that cast members believe will add extra depth and delight for audiences. “It brings sides of marriage to life that you don’t see in everyday theater,” noted Kent Gable, who will portray Paul alongside his wife, Beth Gable, as Amy. “It’s incredibly relatable for anybody who is married or was married or is thinking about getting married,” commented Kevin Ditzler. He and his wife, Cara Ditzler, will play Peter and Susan, respectively. Other cast members include Jordyn McCrady as Sarah, Asher Johnson as Harry, Caleb Heckman as David, Chrissy Nickel as Jenny, Deb Good-Zeiner as Joanne, Layne Zeiner as Larry, Ali Fleming as Marta, Kara Hartman as Kathy, and Mikaela Krall as April. “Company” will be choreographed by Jill Gagliano, with music directed by Sharon Boyer.

The inaugural spring Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show will take place on Saturday, May 18, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Approximately 100 exhibitors will fill the stands at the spring show, including painters, photographers, jewelers, potters, woodworkers, and others - representing a range of styles within their fields, from traditional to contemporary and beyond. “It’s a nice eclectic show, and I like that there’s something there for every price point,” Hobday added. “There are a lot of new (exhibitors) coming, and it’s almost fifty-fifty with arts and crafts,” noted Hobday. Some of the artists and crafters will be traveling from outside the central Pennsylvania region to participate in the show, but Hobday emphasized that they all feature handmade work. Showcasing original work rather than reproductions has been of the utmost importance to

Hobday for the fall show as well, which has been held for 31 years and counting. Plenty of food and beverage options will be available for folks to purchase throughout the grounds of Root’s as well. Adding a spring show has certainly come with its challenges, but Hobday is optimistic that the new event will fill a void in Lancaster and hopefully be a hit with the community. “A lot of the spring shows that had been happening aren’t anymore,” she explained. “I’m hoping people will come and like it. We’ve just gotten a lot more artwork than I expected for it being the first spring show.” Promoting the importance of art to the community is a priority for Hobday, who is a watercolor artist herself. She also taught art at Hempfield High School for 25 years. The fall Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show has grown into a two-day event and earned a ranking as one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country from Sunshine Artist magazine. The 32nd annual fall Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place on Saturday, Aug. 31, and Sunday, Sept. 1. For more information about the Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show, readers may visit www.hlcshow.com. 600 drivers with trucks and trailers at the Truck Convoy, as well as an estimated 5,000 to 7,000 community members at the Convoy Carnival. The Convoy itself is a 26-mile scenic route through Amish Country, where 25,000 members of the community line the route to cheer on the drivers and the 125 Wish recipients who ride with them. This year, the final vehicle will be the Wish Family Bus, transporting family members of Wish recipients who are deceased. The first truck will tow the Wish Angel Trailer, which features stars emblazoned with names of Wish children who are deceased. A Working Truck Beauty Contest is being held online, and the winners of each of the four categories will be featured at the Convoy. To vote, readers may visit https://1.shortstack.com/nJPNlD. The Convoy Carnival, open to children and adults of all ages, will feature a wide array of local food, games, dozens of costumed characters, live music and a live auction. An on-stage presentation will take place at noon. Parking will be located in the residential area across from Burle Business Park, and a free bus service will shuttle guests from Lancaster Catholic High School and Grandview Shopping Plaza throughout the day. The Make-A-Wish Mother’s Day Truck Convoy began in 1990 when a child, Matt, was granted his wish to ride in an 18-wheeler and talk to his sister via CB radio. On the day of Matt’s Wish, more than 40 trucks were in the Convoy. Since then, the event has grown each year. In 2003, 2004, and 2016, the Convoy set the Guinness World Record for the world’s longest truck convoy. For more information or to register as a driver, readers may visit www.wish convoy.org. Preregistration is appreciated, but drivers may also register at the event. There is a minimum donation for truck drivers to participate in the convoy. Information is also available by emailing convoy@philadesv.wish.org or calling 717-283-4868. Make-A-Wish, together with the community, grants the wishes of children with critical illnesses. Make-A-Wish Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley has granted more than 6,500 wishes since the chapter’s inception in 1986. Readers may visit www.philadesv.wish.org to learn more. Musical from pg 1 Elizabethtown Area High School’s spring production of “Seussical the Musical” recently earned seven nominations for the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards. Senior Ryan Kruft and junior Adam Evans were both nominated for Outstanding Lead Actor. Junior Carter Rutkowski and sophomore Alexis Martin were nominated for Outstanding Featured Performer and Outstanding Supporting Actress, respectively. In addition, the performance received nominations for Outstanding Pit Orchestra, Outstanding Dance Number and Outstanding Musical. The school’s fall play, “The Man Who Came to Dinner,” received four nominations, including Outstanding Lead Actor (Carter Rutkowski), Outstanding Lead Actress (Claire Fritz), Outstanding Supporting Actor (Ryan Kruft), and Outstanding Supporting Actress (Emma Buettner). High schools in Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, and Perry counties were eligible to receive nominations. The Elizabethtown Area School District was also invited

to participate due to its proximity to Hershey itself. Independent evaluators representing the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards attended each school’s production to gather the list of nominees. The awards focus solely on the performances of the young people, honoring their acting, singing, and dancing abilities. A Tony Awards-inspired ceremony will be held in May at the Hershey Theatre. Katie, who plans to attend Kutztown University in the fall to major in graphic design, drew a picture for the mural based on Gracie and Corrie’s ideas. Next, the girls gave a presentation to EAHS principal Maura Hobson seeking approval for the mural to be completed within the school. The plan was approved after the semester ended, and the administration chose a space in a high-traffic hallway that connects to the EAHS lobby. The 8-by-30-foot mural reads “You Are Loved” and is surrounded by colorful blocks that the three girls, along with classmate Rebecca Epps, spent hours creating after school and during weekends in the second semester. Once supplies arrived in February, the girls used a projector to transfer Katie’s drawing

onto the wall and taped off all the straight lines before painting the project. “The tape is what took forever,” noted Gracie. All of the hard work seems to be paying off, as the students have received a lot of positive feedback on the mural. “A lot of teachers have commented that they love looking at it,” Katie said. “I think it’s a really positive message.” Gracie and Corrie - who plan to study secondary education at Millersville and Kutztown universities, respectively - said that their hope is that the mural will encourage everyone who passes by and remind them that they are loved no matter what they may be going through. “I hope it makes people smile,” added Corrie.

ET Softball Team Slips as Playoffs Loom by Eric Pyles

High school sports can be tricky. Take for example the Elizabethtown softball team and their current three game slide that started on April 24th with a loss to a Solanco team the Lady Bears had beat by 11 runs their first meeting. Up next was a meeting with the buzz saw know as Lampeter-Strasburg, resulting in a 10-2 loss that was followed by a ‘how did that happen’ loss to Conestoga Valley whom E-town knocked off 10-3 back in March. Of the three losses, the defeat to L-S on April 29th was the least surprising. The Pioneers (17-0) are one of two undefeated L-L teams after all. Of course, that doesn’t take the sting out of a loss that saw Kristin Geesey surrender 14 hits that led to seven of 10 runs being earned. Geesey also picked up one of

Elizabethtown’s six hits with a two out double plating two runs in the third. That reduced the deficit to just one. Lampeter-Strasburg scored seven runs over the final four innings to pull away. One day later, E-town battled Conestoga Valley to an 8-6 loss with all but one run coming in the final two innings of the eight-inning affair. That single run gave the Lady Bears a 1-0 lead in the fourth where things remained until the craziness broke out in the seventh. CV put together a rally that moved them in front 3-1 with only three E-town outs remaining. The Lady Bears worked two quick outs after Hayden Calaman’s leadoff single. Jessica Zimmerman kept the comeback alive with a single to the left side. Makenzie Cummings followed with a single to left, plating Calaman for a 3-2 game with Zimmerman racing

around from first for a 3-3 game. Cummings ended up stranded on base sending the game to the eighth. CV countered with five runs on four singles, a triple coupled with two errors, making it an 8-3 game with E-town down to their final three outs...again. The Bears got their counter-rally started with one out, loading the bases with a Geesey single, Calaman walk and a CV error. A CV passed ball made it 8-4 with Megan Gray scampering home. Sadie Seaman drove in Geesey and Calaman with a single to center that shrank the gap to 8-6 but that is as close as Elizabethtown could get. TENNIS The boy’s tennis team opened the singles portion of their postseason by taking part in the L-L Flight Tournament on April 25th. The Bears placed two different players in the flight one bracket

with Ethan Lown earning the three seed and Nacho Bartolome the seventh seed. Bartolome saw his time cut short, falling to Penn Manor’s Curtis Rabatin in the opening round. Lown on the other hand, played his way into the District 3-3A singles championship with a march to fourth place. He opened with a 6-3, 6-1 win over Sam Tlumach of Garden Spot and continued with a three-set win over Hempfield’s Dillon Otto in the quarterfinals. Lown dropped his semifinal bout to Cedar Crest’s Dylan Tull, the eventual gold medal winner by a 6-0, 6-1 count, setting up a third-place showdown with Danny Engle of Cocalico. Engle claimed that match 6-4, 6-2 to take bronze, dropping Lown into fourth place. The remaining five Bear entries combined for four wins with Trent McBride capturing two of them. McBride

Chris and Jon Gartley, dropped their first round, Flight Three match opposite Cedar Crest’s Adam Brightbill and Justin Hilty by an 8-3 count. GIRLS’ LACROSSE The girl’s lacrosse team ripped off three wins in the last week starting with a 22-4 thumping of Mechanicsburg on April 26th. Corrie Baker backstopped the win with five saves while Kate Weissend, Cyrose Conteh and Marena Lonardi scored five goals apiece. Jaide Epler tallied three scores with Brooke Horst the final multi-goal scorer for E-town. Sydney Pierson and Madisyn Ealy netted one each. The Lady Bears needed overtime to get by Lewisburg on the 27th with Weissend earning her squad the win with a free position goal in OT. She added three other scores in regulation to tie Lonardi for team high honors for the game. Epler and Conteh each picked up a hat trick while Jillian Molloy tacked on the final score. Baker needed 11 saves to earn the win. See E-town pg 12

did his work in Flight Three where he started with a 6-4, 6-4 win over Cedar Crest’s Garrett Muraika. Another victory, this one over Donegal’s Nathan McNeece, followed in the quarterfinals setting up McBride’s final match with Cocalico’s Jacob Digman. McBride dropped that semifinal match to Digman, 6-2, 6-0. Evan Schneider picked up the final singles win, taking out Jacob Bidelman of Manheim Central in three sets of their Flight Four opening round tilt. Schneider was unable to extend his season, falling to Hempfield’s Alexander Cooke in the quarterfinals, 6-1, 7-5. In Flight Two doubles, Bartolome and Schneider topped Maxwell Davis and Karpouzis of Penn Manor. The 8-3 victory moved the pair into the quarterfinals where they fell to Lancaster Catholic’s Ross Conway and Miles Durrett by an 8-6 final. Lown and McBride, in first doubles, drew a first-round bye and a quarterfinal tilt with Hempfield’s Otto and Nishant Balepur that went to the Black Night duo 6-2, 6-3.

Mt. Calvary Chargers Move to 9-4 Overall by Leah Sintic

Split results moved the Charger ball club to a 9-4 overall record last week, with a narrow loss to Berks Catholic on Tuesday followed by a conference win over Harrisburg Christian. A 5-0 opening blitz by Berks Catholic left the Chargers scrambling to make up the difference in last Tuesday’s home contest, but despite a strong resurgence, the MC club came up just short in the 9-8 final. Doing their best to counter the first inning deficit, the Charger bats were certainly swinging, racking up 16 hits, led by three apiece from Hunter Stewart, Evan Barnes, and David Ellis. threw five strikeouts over five innings, scattering four hits, and giving up one earned run and a walk. Also out of the bullpen, Hunter Stewart collected three strikeouts in three innings of work. “We never let falling behind get into our heads, we continued to battle, had good at bats, and maintained an aggressive attitude at the plate while playing great defense,” commented head coach Jim Sintic. The Chargers made things exciting when they tied the game in the fourth with a string of hits from Stewart, T. Masters, and a double down the leftfield line by Barnes. The bottom of the fifth gave the Chargers a brief lead (6-5) when W. Lamb powered an RBI single to score D. Lamb. Unfortunately, Berks had a little left in the tank, and responded with two of their own runs to go ahead for the final time. Thursday evening the Chargers were eager to retaliate, and did so with a 10-0 win over Harrisburg Christian in five innings. Sunny skies and a full home crowd to

celebrate senior night was an idyllic baseball setting, and the Chargers wasted no time crossing four runs in the first and held a 6-0 advantage after two. “We went into the game with an aggressive mindset. I was proud of the way we were able to get on base and drive runs in,” praised Sintic. Harrisburg began to regroup defensively and the scoreboard remained unaltered until the bottom of the fifth when D. Lamb broke the game wide open with a bases load triple to give the Charger’s nine. T. Masters ended the game with a walk-off single, sending D. Lamb across for the final run. The shutout effort was shared by two MC pitchers, with T. Masters, a senior, fittingly earning the win after three innings, and in a symbolic passing of the torch, freshman Noah Butler stepped in to finish the job, striking out two in the final two innings. Accumulating a teamwide 11 hits, the Chargers were led at the plate by A. Masters’ three hits and two RBIs. Damian Rutt contributed another two, while David Ellis, Chip Stambaugh, D. Lamb, T. Masters, Stewart, and Barnes each added one. Mount Calvary will miss the pres-

ence of four seniors in the future, taking a moment after the Thursday night win to honor the contributions of David Ellis, Nathan Lerro, Tyler Masters, and Ethan Niedwick. Ellis was a member of varsity baseball for four years, a captain, spiritual leader, and left fielder. His best memories with the team include time spent bonding during their dugout chants and sayings. Ellis was also a member of soccer, basketball, choir, band, golf and tech teams, and he plans to attend Lancaster Bible College in the fall to pursue vocational ministry. “David has grown so much as a baseball player. He is a solid contributor on many levels,” described Sintic. “His leadership and godly example will be missed next season.” Lerro played three years of varsity baseball as an outfielder, in addition to pursuing other interests such as school praise team, drums for the Mount Calvary Church, and National Honor Society. He expects to attend Lehigh University to major in Computer See Chargers pg 12

12 - MERCHANDISER - Elizabethtown Edition - May 8, 2019

E-town from pg 10 On April 30th, the Bears rolled by Ephrata 20-6. Conteh did nearly half the scoring, finishing with eight to pace the offense. Weissend and Lonardi each added four while Epler tacked on two. Pierson and Kendall Davis split the final two goals while Baker earned another win with eight saves. BOYS’ LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team finds themselves on the opposite end of things as losses to Cedar Crest, Ephrata, South Western and Hempfield have the Bears stuck on one win for the season. E-town nearly pulled off a win against Cedar Crest on the 25th but their fourth quarter push fell short leaving the Bears on the wrong side of an 8-7 final. E-town fell behind in the opening half, 7-3, but started chipping away at the Falcon lead with a 2-1 edge in the third. The fourth quarter push resulted in a 2-0 edge but left the Bears’ comeback incomplete. Cam Poulos led the way with three goals while Sam Azzalina, Sawyer Smith, Alex Hartman and Drew Shaffer each picked up one. Duncan Keller finished with 12 saves. Elizabethtown struggled to find their offense in a 10-3 loss to Ephrata on the 27th. The Mountaineers bombarded Keller with 45 shots leading to 24 saves in the loss. Smith (2g) and Azzalina (1g) accounted for the offense. With 29 saves and 12 goals allowed, Keller had another busy game on the 29th as E-town dropped their clash with South Western, 12-5. This time it was Azzalina picking up the hat trick and Smith and Poulos chipping in one score each.

The Bears kicked off May with a 12-3 loss to Hempfield. All three Bear goals came in the final period after the Knights built a 12-0 cushion. Azzalina netted two of those scores with Poulos scoring once. Keller finished the loss with 16 saves. TRACK The Bear track and field teams posted a double win over Garden Spot on the 29th. The two sides combined to win 32 of the 35 events leading to a 115-30 win for the boys and a 119-31 win for the girls. Derek Heisey and Nat McCloud led the way for the boy’s with Heisey picking up wins in the 110H (16.1) and high jump (5-10) and McCloud adding wins in the 1600m (4:54.9) and 3200m (11:05). The Bears added wins in the two relays that were contested with the 3200m relay posting a 9:59.9 and the 1600m relay a 3:58.6. Collin Hudak added a win in the 100m (11.9) and Aiden Weaver the 200m (24.2). Caiden Herr took the 300H with a time of 44.6. Aiden Hellein added a 400m win (54.9) while Adam Evans took the 800m (2:09.4) to close things out on the track. Frank Miele (shotput), Steven Dixon (discus) and Regan Thomason (javelin) led the charge in the throws while Chaz Mowrer (pole vault) and Kaidyn Heaps (long jump) joined Heisey with wins in the jumps. The Lady Bears swept all three relay races starting with the 3200m relay, ending with the 1600m relay and the 400m relay win in between. A quartet of Lady Bears posted dual solo wins starting with Malayna Van Winkle who claimed the 400m (70.5) and the pole vault (7-6). Megan Rider added wins in the long and triple jumps while Carly Sedun locked up the shotput and discus titles.

Olivia Anson picked up the final field win with a toss of 101-3 in the javelin. Katie Locker (1600m) and Madeline Quinn (3200m) led a distance sweep while Amber Bostdorf added victories in the 100m and 200m. Sierra Kapcsos added an 800m win (2:30.1) while Alicia Underkoffler nabbed the 300H with a time of 48.0. The Bears spent April 27th at the Cedar Cliff Relays where the boy’s collected 11 top five finishes while the Lady Bears tallied 10. Heisey and Isaac Weidler nabbed a gold with a 122 combined height in the high jump. The Lady Bears picked up three gold medals starting with Cat Shontz, Quinn, Locker and Kapcsos claiming the distance medley relay. Sedun and Anson teamed up for a discus win while Van Winkle, Shontz, Mikalina Mullen and Eleni Houck took the sprint medley relay in 4:26.63. The team also sent two relay teams to Philadelphia to compete in the Penn Relays on April 25th and 26th. Shontz, Quinn, Locker and Kapcsos broke their recently set school record in the 3200m relay, clocking a 4:23.76 in the Small School Championships on the 25th. That time earned them fourth in the small school field and a spot in the Championship of America on the 26th. They turned in the 10th fastest time in that race, posting a 9:30.68. Heisey, Hudak, Heaps and Brandon Fotibu turned in a 46.37 in their 400m relay race, finishing 91st. VOLLEYBALL The volleyball team dropped their two most recent matches, falling to Garden Spot and Manheim Central by 3-0 finals. The 25-23, 25-20, 25-18 loss to the Spartans went down on the 26th while the 25-19, 25-19, 25-14

loss to Central took place on the 30th. Nate Seeger had a combined 41 assists in the two losses while Jake Sevcik collected 33 digs. Nicholas Chapman enjoyed an eight kill, one block game against Spot while Jacques Mortha posted a team high 11 kills against the Barons. BASEBALL The baseball team snapped their losing streak but not before it reached seven games with a loss to LampeterStrasburg on the 29th. The Pioneers scored in five of the six innings they batted, leading to a 7-1 final. Kyle Welch and Nick Kreider collected two hits each with the Bears’ lone run coming via a Lampeter-Strasburg error in the seventh. Cole Patrick absorbed the brunt of the Pioneer attack over his five innings to take the loss. Josh Kreider covered the final inning and surrendered the final run of the game. At CV last Tuesday, they posted a 5-3 win. Nick Kreider (5K, 1W) pitched the first six and one third innings to get the win. Zach Malone recorded the final two outs to pick up the save. Hunter Murray provided a two-run sixth inning triple that broke up a 2-2 tie. Cole Livingston knotted the score one

batter earlier with an RBI single. Welch and Josh Kreider accounted for Elizabethtown’s other two RBI for the game. The Bears picked up another win on May 1st, topping Lebanon 4-1. Malone went the distance and allowed one run on

four hits to earn the win. E-town picked up their first run on a Cedar wild pitch with Jake Black making it 2-0 in the first with an RBI single. Nick Kreider pushed the lead to 3-0 with a sac fly in the third and to 4-0 with a RBI single in the fifth.

Chargers from pg 11 Science or Engineering. “Nate is a positive example of consistency,” Sintic said. “He has continued to improve over the past three seasons, demonstrates patience, and has both a good attitude and team mentality.” Masters, a four-year team member, has contributed in roles of pitching and center fielder. His season highlight included his sibling rivalry with brother A. Masters and edging ahead in the ERA category. Tyler also participated in golf, basketball, student council and athletic council and plans to attend Liberty University to study video game design. “Tyler is a leader and was named a captain by his teammates the last two years,” pointed out Sintic. “He’s a .300 lifetime hitter, has improved tremendously as a pitcher, and plays great defense.” Niedwick has been a four-year baseball and soccer player. His post-graduation plans include attending Penn State Harrisburg to pursue Mechanical Engineering as well as ROTC with the expectation to be commissioned as a second Lieutenant in the US Army after college. “Due to injury, Ethan hasn’t been able to play this season-yet he has demonstrated what it means to be a part of a team even without playing,” acknowledged Sintic. “He is always willing to help

and encourage his teammates.” With more work still to be done this season, the team turns their attention to three games remaining in their regular season lineup. They will face Lancaster

County Christian, Conestoga Christian and Greenwood High School on three consecutive days to determine their final rankings in both the CCAC and PIAA District III playoff brackets.

Church Will Present Organ Recital for Two Violins in D minor, with two students playing each of the solo parts. The violinists will be Vincent Cao, Cecelia Nightingale, and Amaya Williams, all of Hempfield High School, and Naomi Main of McCaskey High School. The second part of the program will be a retrospective on the 1950s, the era when the first permutation of the present organ was installed. Also in the ’50s, Moyer played a recital at St. John’s when he was 13. On May 12, Moyer will repeat one of the pieces he played at his concert in 1950. This part of the program will open with the Toccata and Fugue in D minor by Bach

and close with the Prelude and Fugue on the Name Alain by Maurice Duruflé, a piece that made its first appearance in America in 1956. In between those pieces, Moyer will play music that is not standard organ fare. Co-organist at the church, along with Robert Carbaugh, Moyer is professor emeritus of music at Millersville University, where he taught music history and organ for 32 years. He also was parish organist and choirmaster for three Lutheran churches in Lancaster during those years, retiring from service in 2002. He and Carbaugh have both served St. John’s since 2006. The recital is free and open to the pub-

lic. A freewill offering will be accepted to benefit Beth Shalom House, a Christianbased transitional house in Lancaster for mothers who are leaving prison and want to reunite with their children.
