Local Scouts Earn Eagle Rank Michael and Logan are seniors at Elizabethtown Area High School. In the fall, Michael plans to attend college to major in computer science engineering. Logan plans to attend High Point University to major in strategic communications.

For both boys, the accomplishment represents 10 years of adventure and dedication to the Scouting program. In addition to earning the 21 merit badges required to achieve the rank of Eagle, each boy also completed a requisite Eagle Scout Project.

Michael Hensel (left) and Logan Ginder, members of Troop 117, recently earned the rank of Eagle.

Prior to earning the rank of Eagle, Troop 117 members Michael Hensel and Logan Ginder completed their Eagle Scout Projects, which involved moving and reconstructing a playground and building picnic tables, respectively.

LampHouse Films of Lancaster has created “Send a Rose,” a local production featuring Lancaster Mayor Danene Sorace and the CEOs of influential companies in the city interviewed via Zoom. The film is designed to be a COVID-19 response anthem for Lancaster. It is a call to the community to spread acts of kindness, messages of support and symbols of solidarity in this time. The film can be viewed at www.lamphousefilms.com/fil ms/send-a-rose. LampHouse is a collective of producers creating commercials and feature films in Lancaster County. Creating “Send a Rose” was a way for the company to support the community by creating inspiration through the medium of film. Lancaster County residents are also welcome to sign up for a new encouraging story that will be delivered via email every Monday morning. this situation with two new virtual lessons released each Tuesday as part of the GOTR At Home curriculum. The first lesson, which was released the week of March 16, is called “We Are Unique; We Are Similar.” The lessons can be completed by a girl alone, but they are designed for all household members. “This is a family, at-home, shared experience,” said GOTR Lancaster program director Jennifer West. “We want to lift up the community and bring everyone together to share in the GOTR experience.” Each lesson includes a main concept called a big idea and an explanation of why that idea matters. Games and discussion questions based on ways to explore the theme are included, along with physical activities. “What we have are called Movement Mixes,” explained West, who said that suggestions might include skipping, running in place, or doing star jumps for a certain amount of time. “Not everybody can get outside (to exercise),” West explained. “(The lessons) are encouraging whatever activity you can do at home.” West said that the lessons are sent via email and text to all the families and coaches each week. “We encourage the coaches to reach out to the families and see how the girls are enjoying the lessons and keep them involved in whatever capacity they can,” said West, who noted that she realizes many of the coaches, who are often teachers or parents of the girls who take part, are still working at some level. “(We appreciate) whatever they can do,” said West. The annual GOTR spring 5K,

which is normally held at Franklin & Marshall College in mid-May, will be a virtual event this year. “We are calling it the Virtual GOTR 5K Your Way presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster,” said West, who added that the 5K will be available to complete from Friday, May 29, through Sunday, May 31, and will include various options in addition to running and walking. “We have a bingo card sheet of activities,” explained West. “If (a participant) wants to run the 5K distance over those three days, they can, (but) if they can’t or don’t want to, they can do the different activities on the bingo sheet.” This year’s 5K will be free for those who sign up, but donations will be accepted. “We will email a 5K bib (to those who register) that can be printed out and colored and made their own to wear while doing the activities,” said West. Interested individuals may register at www.gotr lancaster.org/5k-detail. #GOTRGotYourBack is an effort that GOTR has undertaken to engage the broader community during this time. “It’s our social media piece, which is all about planting positive messages in the homes of anyone who follows us,” said GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson. “There are challenges (to complete) … and encouraging words. It’s all about bringing our mission to life.” Johnson noted that the organization feels it is especially important to spread a message of kindness. “Just as our 5K is like opening a bottle of sunshine, that’s what we want to be able to do during this time,” said Johnson.

Pettis Earns Entomologist Certificate Locally-owned Dominion Pest Control, which serves the Susquehanna Valley, recently announced that its general service manager, Shawn Pettis, has become the first person to become a public health entomologist (PHE) certificate holder, a new certification offered by the Entomological Society of America (ESA). Pettis recently received his PHE certification after becoming an associate certified entomologist (ACE), which indicates that the certified person has acquired skills to identify insects and understand their biology. The PHE certificate acknowledges that the holder “studied for and passed a rigorous exam covering insects and the diseases they vector, as well as principals of integrated pest management. In today’s world with diseases like West Nile virus and Lyme disease related to pests found in backyards, such as ticks and mosquitoes, Dominion is

Shawn Pettis pleased to have Pettis on board to help make decisions about control measures that can be implemented on customers’ properties. Pettis is a graduate of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology, where he studied business and currently serves on the board of governors. Pettis was recently featured in a pest industry magazine, Pest Management Professional (PMP), for his ACE and PHE achievements. PA Family Travel Fair from pg 1 restrictions, she was heartbroken for the more than 50 exhibitors. When she learned that all of them were committed to doing the 2021 event, she wanted to do something to help them. On April 21, Royal finalized plans to take the fair virtual starting during National Travel and Tourism Week, which was held from May 3 to 9. The virtual PA Family Travel Fair launched on May 4 and will continue through Saturday, May 30. The virtual fair can be accessed at w w w. w h e r e a n d w h e n . c o m / virtual-pa-family-travel-fair or by using the QR code found with this article. Where & When Pennsylvania may also be found by searching for “Where & When Pennsylvania on Facebook or at @whereandwhenpa on Instagram. “Every day, we will feature a different exhibitor, said Royal. “Each one of them will take over our social media for a day. The first organization to take over Where & When’s social media was the Endless Mountains Visitors Bureau, which is spotlighting a giveaway in conjunction with the fair consisting of a weekend kayaking getaway for four. “The package includes two nights lodging, a kayaking trip, and $200 toward meals, said Royal, who noted that a basket of Endless Mountains products will be included. Visitors to the virtual travel fair may enter to win the package at the website. The winner will be chosen in a random drawing by Friday, June 5. Lining up to take over the Where & When social media are a mix of visitors’ bureaus, historic attractions, amusement parks, museums, and all-inclusive resorts. Among them are the Pennsylvania Campground Owners Association, the Nature Inn at Bald Eagle, Pennsylvania Great Outdoors, Pioneer Tunnel Coal Mine, DelGrosso’s Amusement Park and Laguna Splash, and Refreshing Mountain Retreat and Adventure Center.

Fort Roberdeau in Altoona will also have a day manning the social media accounts. Virtual tours of areas will be available on some days as well. “We have 18 different destination marketing organizations involved, noted Royal. “Some of those will include virtual tour links for their areas. Among the destination marketing areas that will be part of the virtual fair are the Allegheny National Forest Visitors Bureau and The Happy Valley Adventure Bureau. One of the exciting aspects of the travel fair is that the exhibitors bring information about interesting and beautiful parts of Pennsylvania to those who attend. The virtual fair can accomplish that goal by putting the spotlight on special attractions in different areas of the state. “Susquehanna, Wyoming, and Sullivan counties are for people who really like to get away to open spaces, noted Royal. “Worlds End State Park (in Sullivan County) is really pretty, and in Franklin County, there are beautiful vistas. Royal added that the town of New Castle in Lawrence County is considered the fireworks capital of America because it is the home of two fireworks enterprises that trace their origins to the mid1800s. The county is also home to a craft burger trail. Royal said that through the virtual fair, she is encouraging involvement by the whole family, including the youngest members. “We will have children’s activity pages, and there’s a downloadable crossword puzzle and some coloring pages, Royal pointed out. “I am encouraging parents of tweens and teens to involve those children in their travel plans (as well).

sessions are canceled until further notice. Telephone counseling is available, and DVS will offer remote counseling via a web-based platform as soon as possible. For now, readers may call the front desk at 717299-9677 to arrange to speak with a counselor over the phone. Protection From Abuse orders are still available for victims of domestic violence. The Domestic Violence Legal Center (DVLC) is available to assist individuals with information, options, and resources at 717-291-5823 on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 5 p.m. If unable to reach a staff person directly, callers are asked to leave a message and their call will be returned as soon as possible. On weekends, readers should call the DVS 24-hour hotline to be connected to the on-call legal advocate for assistance. All public events, education, and prevention sessions with which DVS was scheduled to be involved are canceled at this time. Questions should be directed to Christine Gilfillan, DVS director, at cgilfillan@cap lanc.org. For questions specific to information about domestic violence, events, outreach, and volunteers, readers may contact Angela Keen, community outreach and volunteer coordinator, at akeen@caplanc.org. There are several things the public can do to help DVS and victims of domestic violence. Readers may follow the “Community Action Partnership (CAP) of Lancaster County” and “Domestic Violence Services of Lancaster County” Facebook pages and share information about the availability of services. The public should be aware that victims of domestic violence may be trapped at home with their abusers and that their situations may become worse. DVS is temporarily not accepting donations of goods. However, supporters may help by providing a prepared meal for the Safe House residents and staff. To help, readers may visit www.caplanc.org and click “Donate.” If a household has been impacted by COVID-19, residents are now eligible for disaster household food distribution regardless of income. Readers may call 211 or visit www.uwp.org/211gethelp and click on “Food/Meals” to find food pantries nearby.

Hospital Receives Donated Masks patients and families. As of late April, more than 3,000 masks have been delivered to Nemours/Alfred I. duPont Hospital in Wilmington, Del., where many Plain children receive care. Cindy Bo, operational vice president and chief strategy officer for Nemours, is co-leading

the hospital’s efforts to procure PPE as well as personal cloth masks. When the Clinic for Special Children in Strasburg, on whose board Bo serves, heard about Nemours’ need for masks, it notified the Plain community. Within days, volunteers had produced hundreds of masks, which

were collected and delivered to the hospital. Julia Martin, who also works at the Clinic for Special Children, personally delivered scores of masks to the hospital. In addition to duPont Hospital, Nemours provides pediatric care at more than 30 sites across Delaware, Pennsylvania, and New Jersey.

gic recommendations for a new theoretical smart car product that would leverage digital technology. Based on current worldwide concerns about viruses like COVID19 as well as other airborne diseases and pollutants, Ibrokhim Mirzakhonov, Sabrina Tatalias, and VanderMey developed a product that would use HEPA air filtration and ultraviolet light to help eliminate allergens, organisms that can cause diseases, and impurities inside of cars. The four finalist teams in the competition virtually presented their proposals to a panel of judges made up of GfK data science experts and three GfK clients from major auto manufacturers. Students were assessed on a variety of criteria, focusing both on data skills and business intelligence, with Point Park’s team delivering the strongest combination of specific recommendations, clear data support and presentation skills. The competition’s second place team consisted of students from California State Polytechnic University in Pomona, who proposed

Emily VanderMey a car safety product supported by Google data streams. Dorene Ciletti, associate professor of marketing and sales, served as a mentor for the students, along with Mark Voortman, assistant professor and director of Point Park’s IT program. Golf Event Rescheduled The Landis Adult Day Services (ADS) benefit golf outing has been rescheduled for Friday, July 24, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. The golf committee has postponed the event out of the concern for clients, residents, staff, and a community of supporters, For those who have already committed as sponsors or have registered to golf in the event, originally scheduled for Friday, June 5, reservations will be transferred to July 24. The needs of Landis ADS clients and its families have not decreased during this mandatory closure. Although ADS clients are staying safe by staying home, this puts tremendous pressure on their caregivers, especially those who are caring for loved ones with memory loss. It is important

to be prepared for their return when Landis ADS is permitted to open. The registration deadline for sponsors and golfers is Friday, July 10. For more information about the event, readers may visit https://landisadultday.org/ golf/ or contact Amy Henriques at 717-381-3584. If it becomes necessary to cancel the benefit golf outing, Landis ADS will consider registration or sponsorship as a charitable donation. Those who prefer that their contribution be handled differently may email Henriques at ahenriques@landis.org. All eligible sponsors are listed on the website, and their ads will be in the golf booklet. The commitment deadline for all sponsorships is now July 10 in order to be included in the golf booklet.
