Bright and early on several recent weekend mornings, 10 girls from Elizabethtown/Donegal Cadette Troop 70595 could be found hard at work at the Winters Heritage House Museum, 47 E. High St., Elizabethtown. When the Cadettes found out that the museum’s garden was in need of some improvements, they set about making plans and gathering donations for materials and supplies to update the garden. Troop leader Julie Houck explained that the traditional 18th century Pennsylvania German garden, located behind the museum building, is designed to illustrate to visitors what herbs and vegetables would have been planted in a Lancaster County home garden in 1760. The traditional wood fence surrounding the garden was in need of repair, so the girls - together
with help from parent volunteers - took down the deteriorating fence and constructed a new fence around the garden. In commemoration of their efforts, each of the girls’ names is printed on a fence post on one side of the garden. The group also weeded and cleaned up the area and replaced the wooden beams around the raised beds inside the garden. Next steps in the project include planting more herbs and vegetables in the raised garden beds inside the fence. Over the summer, Troop 70595 plans to continue to maintain the garden. Julie noted that the foods grown in the garden are used for hearth cooking classes and demonstrations at the Winters Heritage House Museum. Any plants that are not needed for museum purposes are donated to the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown. See Girl Scouts pg 2

The 31st annual Lancaster Senior Games, held May 6 to 10, had another record-breaking year for attendance with a total of 1,004 participants and more than 335 volunteers. According to organizer Lisa Paulson of the Lancaster County Office of Aging, this was the first time that participation numbers broke the 1,000 mark. “People are having fun, and they just love doing it,” remarked committee member Sandy Hess in regards to the record-breaking participation. “The whole idea is to get anybody 55 and up to keep moving. And it’s not just physical; it’s about using your mind, too.” The bulk of the events took place at Spooky Nook Sports, with shuttle buses running to events held at other locations, including the Lancaster YMCA, Amos Herr Park, Hempfield High School, Evergreen Golf Course, Leisure

By finding and meeting a need in the community, each of the girls will achieve the Silver Award, the highest award attainable for a Girl Scout Cadette. To earn a Silver Award, a Cadette must complete a Leadership Journey badge package and work on a community service project for at least 50 hours. Houck said that the award gives the girls a chance to show that they are leaders who are organized, determined, and dedicated to helping the world around them. The Cadettes taking part in the project are Sarah Ashley, Melissa Beaston, Kate Datorre, Alison Fink, Emma Griffith, Addison Houck, Isabella Messina, Sarah Moss, Molly Myers, and Natalie Ott. Houck said that most of the girls in Troop 70595 are in sixth and seventh grades in the Donegal and Elizabethtown Area school districts. “The hardest part (of this project) is waking up early, because I hate waking up early,” said Sarah Moss, and several of her fellow Scouts agreed. Molly added
Obituaries
that getting all the weeds out of the garden at the start of the project may have been the biggest challenge. Some of the girls cited using a nail gun and level and other tools as a highlight, as this was a first-time construction project for them. All in all, “fun” was the buzzword used to capture the Scouts’ feelings about their efforts at the Winters Heritage House Museum. “The dads and moms were a big help,” noted Melissa. Julie noted that in addition to parent volunteers contributing time to make the project possible, local businesses and individuals really came through with generous donations to fund the materials needed for the fence and garden improvements. Troop 70595 has a total of 25 members who meet once a week during the school year. To learn more about joining or volunteering with Girl Scouts, interested individuals may visit www.gshpa.org.

Bears Volleyball Battles Eagles in 3-2 Setback by Eric Pyles
Late season swoons are never a good thing in the world of sports. Take for example an E-town boys’ volleyball team that closed out their regular season on a 1-5 stretch, including two straight to end the season. The result was the Bears dropping out of the three-way battle for second place in Section Two and into sole possession of fourth place, meaning a L-L Quarterfinal match-up with the Section One winner which will be sorted out with a winner take all tie breaker between Hempfield and Warwick. A secondary result of the swoon was a drop to 15th in the District 3-3A power rankings, one spot outside the 14-team field. The first of those two straight losses was a heartbreaking, 3-2, setPhoto by Stef Supplee back in Denver on the 6th where the E-town’s Gavin Gilhool goes up Bears held a 2-0 lead over Cocalico to challenge an Eagle shot during last Monday’s Section but could not hang on for the win. Head coach Lamar Fahnestock cited Two match at Cocalico.
fatigue as the main factor pointing to a lack of depth and injuries but added, “Our boys played their hearts out and just came up a little short.” Three of the five sets were tightly contested, starting with Elizabethtown’s 25-21 opening set victory. Unfortunately, the other two sets went to the Eagles who flipped E-town’s 2-0 edge into a 2-2 deadlock with wins of 33-31 and 2927 in sets three and four. The Bears built that 2-0 lead with a 25-15 set two victory while the Eagles secured the win with a 15-8 victory in the final set. Nate Seeger led the way with 42 assists and 20 digs. Nick Chapman joined Seeger at the forefront of the offense with 18 kills. Jake Sevcik and Casey Lyons fronted the defensive efforts with a combined 51 digs with Lyons adding seven kills, two blocks and two aces while Sevcik finished with five assists and one kill. Two days later the Bears hosted Lancaster Mennonite and despite their best efforts, were not able to replicate their April 16th victory over the Blazers. Instead Mennonite
claimed a 3-0 victory (26-24, 25-20, 27-25). Seeger dished out 28 assists with Jacques Mortha collecting 11 kills. Sevcik tallied another 16 digs while Lyons chipped in with four aces and two blocks. Elizabethtown’s final regular season win of 2019 came on May 2nd when the Bears topped Lebanon 3-1. The Cedars avoided the sweep by stealing game three 25-23 but Etown closed out the match with a 2516 set four victory. The Bears opened the match winning 25-13 and 25-14 to take control. Rudy Woitas picked up 12 kills and three aces while Seeger tallied 34 assists. Sevcik continued to lead the defense with 19 digs while Mortha chipped in with a team high two blocks. LACROSSE The boy’s lacrosse team wrapped up their 2019 campaign on a high note with a 9-7 victory over Mechanicsburg on May 3rd. Sawyer Smith enjoyed a season ending hat trick while Cam Poulos, Sam Azzalina and Jayden Fease all fell one goal short of the same feat. Duncan Keller helped keep his Bears on top with a
22 save day in goal. The girl’s lacrosse team also finished their 2019 season only with the added twist of a near postseason miss. The Lady Bears concluded their regular season with an 8-10 mark, good enough for 13th place in the final District 3-3A rankings. Unfortunately for E-town only 12 teams make the postseason, leaving Elizabethtown the first team out. The Lady Bears finished out the regular season with back-to-back losses starting with a 23-12 setback to Lancaster Country Day on May 2nd. Kate Weissend paced the offense with five goals with Marena Lonardi tacking on three. Cyrose Conteh was the only other multi-goal scorer with Sami Shutt and Jaide Epler picking up one goal each. Corrie Baker finished with six saves. One day later Elizabethtown traveled to Hanover and suffered a 14-11 setback to South Western. Weissend capped her second straight L-L 1st Team All-Star campaign with three goals but Lonardi led the team with four scores and one assist. Epler concluded her L-L Honorable Mention season with two goals while Conteh, a 2nd team L-L All-Star, tacked on one goal and one assist. Morgan Miller picked up the final goal while
Baker finished with seven saves. Shutt was also named to the L-L 2nd team. TRACK The track and field teams had one final regular season tune-up before their postseason kicks in with the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship Meet on May 10th and 11th. Unfortunately for the Bears the girl’s dropped their battle with Manheim Central by an 82-68 count while the boy’s fell 102-48. The Lady Bears collected 10 event wins, split evenly between the track and the field. Alicia Underkoffler and Katie Locker accounted for four of the five track wins. Underkoffler took both hurdle events with a 16.9 in the 100H and a 47.8 in the 300H. Locker did her work in the 1600m where her 5:32.9 led a sweep and the 800m where she won with a time of 2:18.2. Madeline Quinn nabbed the final win on the track with a 12:59.9 in the 3200m. Carly Sedun led the way in the field as the only Lady Bear with multiple wins, taking the shot put (33) and the discus (112-6). Olivia Anson finished up the first-place sweep in the throws with a toss of 97-10 in the javelin. Megan Rider and Malayna See E-town pg 6

Chargers Cap Regular Season With 3 Straight Wins by Leah Sintic
Three games in three days brought a fast and furious end to the Charger regular season schedule, picking up a pair of critical CCAC victories as well as a nonleague win over Greenwood High School.
Depth and efficient pitching throughout the three-game stretch was vital to the Charger success, and when combined with strong defense and great hitting made for a spectacular week. “Our attention to detail has been a huge strength of this year’s team,”
Unfortunately, Evan Barnes was struck by an inside fast ball, but his effort was influential in getting ducks on the pond. With bases loaded and two outs against them Dakota Lamb powered a single into right field to push across two more Charger runs, giving the club a 4-1 advantage before the close of the inning. Hunter Stewart threw a complete game, striking out six, walking one and scattering four hits while earning the win. Stewart not only took command on the hill; he also crushed a home run over the left field wall in the bottom of the sixth giving the Chargers their fifth and final run. “Hunter played a great all-around game,” credited Sintic. “His composure on the mound was just what we needed.” The night before, the Chargers took a trip to Geigertown to take on Conestoga Christian, and ended the game in five innings, 15-1. The MC club took control from the onset, registering multiple runs in each of their first four at bats, gathering a total of nine hits led by
pointed out head coach Jim Sintic. “We have become a team that focuses on being there for each other, and I am extremely proud of the way they finished out the regular season.” Wednesday’s 5-1 takedown of Greenwood capped the Charger regular season, bringing them to an overall record of 12-4, and setting the stage for what has all the indications of an exciting postseason to come. Greenwood got ahead early on in Wednesday’s clash, but MC erupted with a four-run bottom of the fifth to take command. A double from Damian Rutt plated Wyatt Lamb who had reached on a walk, and leveled the score at one, but the Chargers weren’t done. Tyler Masters singled to get on base and then worked his way around with heads up base running, scoring the go ahead run on a ground out. “I liked the way our hitters worked the count and came through with clutch hits,” praised Sintic. “Wyatt did an excellent job getting on base and setting the table for the rest of the inning.”
two apiece from Rutt and T. Masters. A. Master’s and W. Lamb each cranked a home run picking up three and two RBIs on their respective lap around the bases. Stewart picked up the win after just two innings of work, striking out two, walking zero, and allowing no hits or runs. T. Masters and Noah Butler both pitched in relief picking
up a strikeout apiece in the combined effort. Mount Calvary certainly made their first triumph of the week interesting for their home crowd in Monday’s 11-4 victory over the Lancaster County Christian Lions. Despite holding the lead for nearly the entire contest, the Chargers allowed the Lions to get back into See Calvary pg 6

E-town from pg 4 Van Winkle wrapped up the winners, taking the high jump (4-10) and the pole vault (7-9), respectively. On the boy’s side, the Bears managed just five wins. Nate Johnson and Nat McCloud gave E-town a distance sweep with Johnson taking the 1600m in 4:56.5 while McCloud claimed the 3200m with a time of 10:27.5. Aiden Weaver picked up the final win on the track with a 52.8 in the 400m. In the field, Frank Miele posted the top toss in the shot put (42-9.5) while Steven Dixon did the same in the discus (122-11). TENNIS The postseason journey for the boy’s tennis team came to a close on May 6th with a loss to Hershey in the District 3-3A Quarterfinals. The two teams only completed three matches with the remaining two being suspended after Hershey took a match sealing 3-0 lead. The Bears advanced to the quarterfinals with a 5-0 opening round victory over Manheim Central on May 2nd. E-town took two of the three singles matches in straight sets with Nacho Bartolome needing three sets to dispatch Andrew Rajaratnam. Bartolome dropped the opening set 3-6 before rebounding with 7-6(7-4) and 6-4 wins. Ethan Lown claimed
the first singles match by matching 6-4 finals, taking out Silas Eldeen while Trent McBride took out Hunter Winters, 7-5, 6-1 at number three singles. Evan Schneider and Chris Gartley also needed three sets to get by Jacob Bidelman and Tony Stoltzfus at first doubles with Jimmy Overmoyer and Brecken Musser topping Scott Westfield and Darren Bertin in straight sets. Lown stepped out on his own for District 3-3A singles, falling to York Suburban’s Parker Lando, the four seed in the 3A field, by a 6-0, 6-0 final. BASEBALL Elizabethtown’s 2019 baseball season came to a close over the last week with the Bears dropping their final three games to finish 6-14. The first of those losses went down on May 3rd with Ephrata claiming the 42 win. E-town cobbled together three hits, all in the first, and propelled the Bears to a 2-0 lead. Kyle Welch kicked off the two-run burst by reaching on an Ephrata error while Nick Kreider picked up his lone hit of the game two batters later, moving Welch to second. Cole Patrick followed with a double to plate Welch for a 1-0 lead. Kreider moved to third on Patrick’s double setting up Hunter Murray’s sac bunt that made it 2-0 with two outs. Ephrata closed the rally down, limiting the damage to two runs, setting the stage for their victory. The
Mountaineers pushed ahead with back-to-back two-run frames in the third and fourth. That handed the loss to Patrick who got the start and covered the opening six and twothird innings. Josh Kreider covered the final out after Patrick reached his pitch limit. Elizabethtown’s next loss contained much less drama as the Bears fell to Cedar Cliff 10-0 on the 7th. Welch’s first inning single ended up being the lone E-town hit while a trio of Bear pitchers surrendered a total of 11 hits. Nick Kreider got the start and allowed four hits which along with five walks and one Bear error led to six runs (two earned) in just one and two third innings of work. Zach Malone covered the next three and one third innings, also surrendering four hits but just one run. Tyler Souders finished the final one third of an inning and was on the hook for the final three Colt runs. The season finale went down on the 8th with Elizabethtown on the wrong end of a 2-1 final. The Bears enjoyed a 5-2 edge in hits but were unable to string enough together to mount an attack. In fact, E-town’s lone run came in the top of the fourth with just one hit. Nick Kreider worked a lead-off walk and moved to third on that hit, a one-out single by Murray. Jake Black was hit by a pitch to load the bases with Kreider racing home on a wild pitch for a 1-0 lead.
That lead was short lived as the Warriors plated single runs in the fourth and fifth to secure the win. Michael Baker got the start and pitched into the fifth putting him on the hook for both Susquehannock runs and the loss. Patrick covered the final two innings and tacked on two strikeouts and one walk to Baker’s tally of seven and two, respectively. SOFTBALL The Lady Bear softball team wrapped up the league portion of their regular season, securing a spot in the L-L playoffs with wins over Lebanon and Ephrata. Elizabethtown needed just five innings to take care of Lebanon on May 1st, topping the Lady Cedars 21-8. Elizabethtown batted around in both the second and fifth innings, giving the Lady Bears a quartet of players with three RBIs.
Kristin Geesey led that pack with four hits while Megan Gray and Sadie Seaman needed just three hits to hit the RBI mark. Hailee Calaman did her work with two hits, one of which was a two-run blast that came as part of Elizabethtown’s seven run fourth. Alyssa Hamilton benefited from the extra run support with Brooke Bryan covering the final inning in relief. Elizabethtown posted another fiveinning victory one day later, blanking Ephrata 12-0. This time it was Geesey that enjoyed the run support, posting a complete game shutout with four strikeouts and no walks to go with just two hits allowed. She also helped her cause with a three hit, three RBI game at the plate. Seaman and Hayden Calaman provided ample back-up with a combined three hits and four RBI.
Calvary from pg 5
pushed two more MC runs across. Late in the game and facing a 4-1 deficit, the Lions caught their second wind, capitalizing on Charger errors, and equalized the score at four. Singles from Barnes and Rutt sparked the beginning of a Charger rally that ultimately led to a sevenrun surge and sealed the fate of the ball game in the bottom of the sixth. With Barnes, Rutt, and David Ellis loading the bases, and two outs against them D. Lamb stepped up for arguably the most significant of his four walks, demonstrating control and composure while pushing across the go-ahead run. A rejuvenated Charger club batted around the order with hits from A. Masters, Stewart, and W. Lamb, punctuated by a huge triple from T. Masters to propel the Chargers’ eleventh and final run. “Our offensive effort was tremendous tonight,” pointed out Sintic. “I
contention with and knot up the scoreboard at four in the top of the sixth, before rallying for a massive response in the corresponding frame to run away with the win. “When things start to go poorly it’s easy to get down on yourself or the team; I was very proud of the way that this team responded to adversity and came together,” explained Sintic. W. Lamb and Rutt each had two of the total eight Charger hits, and D. Lamb’s patience at the plate earned him four walks that turned into essential runs for the MC club. A single from Chargers number three hitter, Stewart, plated the first run of the contest in the opening frame, and the scoreboard remained the same until a wild pitch and error sequence in the bottom of the third

Participants will step off at 9 a.m. The event is open to anyone who wants to run, walk, skip, or cartwheel to the finish line. The Girls on the Run 5K is a noncompetitive, celebratory 5K, and all finishers will be honored, regardless of placement. Master brothers shared responsibility on the mound with A. Master’s striking out eight and scattering five hits and one walk in five and a third innings. T. Masters came out of the bullpen to close the contest earning the win and allowing zero hits, walks, or runs in one and two thirds innings. While the four-game win streak to end the season certainly makes it easier to celebrate, that doesn’t mean that there weren’t mistakes or bumps along the way. The team has been attempting to implement an others-first team mentality throughout all the ups and downs the sport throws at them, and their theme from Matthew 22, to love one another, has been their mantra-one they’ve challenged each other to improve on. “We don’t always do this the right way,” acknowledge Sintic. “But it has been encouraging to see the way these athletes have grown, not just in skills, but in the way they love and support each other no matter what.” Their journey is far from done, as they turn their attention first to their CCAC playoff aspirations, before taking on opponents in the PIAA District III post-season bracket.

Senior Games from pg 1 Darts, bocce, and cornhole were among the most popular events, with more than 300 registrants each. Hess, who has been volunteering on the Senior Games committee for more than 20 years, noted that organizers adjust the event offerings from year to year according to what people seem to be interested in. “Every year we tweak something to make it work a little better, said Hess. For instance, bridge is no longer offered due to waning interest, but now there is a pinochle tournament. Sometimes event demonstrations are scheduled into the week to test the waters before adding something to the official competition list for the next year. New additions for 2019 included ladder golf, a Nook exercise sampler, and Pilates, as well as a rock climbing demonstration with

Risser earned first place for the 80- to 84-year-old division and also participated in bocce, ladder golf, shuffleboard, basketball, and the soccer penalty kick. “I love all of the games, said Risser. “I love water volleyball too, but they don’t have that yet. Formerly of New Holland, Risser said that it was when he moved into Brethren Village in 2007 that he really became active in recreational sports. Aquatics Resources class at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) recently helped the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission stock local streams to help ensure a successful trout season for local fishermen. Working alongside Jeffrey Schmidt, the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission’s waterways conservation officer for Lancaster County, the students released rainbow and brown trout into local streams including the Conoy Creek in Bainbridge and the Little Chiques Creek at Cove Outlook Park in Mount Joy. At the Little Chiques, the students also released 35 brook trout that they raised from eggs in the school’s specially designed Aquatics Lab. The project was part of the Trout in the Classroom Program sponsored by Trout Unlimited and the Pennsylvania Fish and Boat Commission. The students received the eggs on Nov. 7, 2018, and placed them in a cold-water tank specially designed for raising trout. The tank contained special equipment that maintained the water temperature at 54 degrees, provided oxygen-rich water, and circulated the

L.H. Brubaker Appliances and Water Treatment, with three locations in Lancaster and Mechanicsburg, is celebrating its 87th anniversary. In 1932, Lester H. Brubaker opened a store providing the sales and service of farm equipment in Strasburg. At that time, the only appliances offered were large International freezers used mostly by farmers. In 1960, Donald H. Frank joined the sales and parts department at L.H. Brubaker. Shortly thereafter, Lester permitted General Electric (GE) to display appliances in the showroom. The first year L.H. Brubaker offered appliances, only 90 sold, but those sales were thanks to Donald. Considering appliance sales not to be a good business decision, Lester informed GE that he had decided to get out of the appliance business. GE countered with a compliment, saying that the manufacturer never liked to end business relationships with a reputable company that paid its bills on time, and it requested that a few pieces be displayed in a corner of the showroom and that Donald be allowed to sell them with the tractors and lawn mowers. Lester agreed. That year, Donald sold 295 pieces, and the following year saw sales of 525 appliances. The sales numbers continued to climb as years went by. In 1972, Donald and his wife, Elnora, bought L.H. Brubaker from Lester, and it became solely an appliance store. Counting the two Franks, the store had 11 employees. The following year, Donald’s oldest son, Donald L. Frank Sr., joined the family business. In the fall of 1974, L.H. Brubaker moved into a new store that sat beside the original location on Strasburg Pike. The facil-

Senior Games from pg 8 Alan Ruby of Akron and Barry Lynch of Lancaster took first and second place, respectively, in the 85- to 89-year-old division for horseshoes. This was not the first time that Ruby and Lynch had contended against each other for the championship in horseshoes, and yet: “We’re still friends,” said Ruby with a laugh. Neither Ruby nor Lynch practices horseshoes throughout the year, but they both work out regularly at a local athletic club where they are part of the Silver Sneakers program. Ruby remarked, “I just love the people here and the fellowship that we have. It’s all about the people.” To learn more about the Lancaster County Senior Games, readers may visit www.LancSeniorGames.org.

MJMC Welcomes Tuel As Associate Pastor Following an affirmation from the Mount Joy Mennonite Church (MJMC) congregation, Jeremy Tuel began his role as the church’s associate pastor of Worship and Care Ministries on March 18. Church representatives noted that Tuel’s spiritual gifts and his wide range of ministry and worshipleading experience make him a good fit for his new role at MJMC. “Jeremy has a lifelong love for and passion for the church,” lead pastor Karl Landis said. “He complements our existing pastoral team as an extrovert with strengths in connecting and pioneering.” An Anabaptist, Tuel came highly recommended by people who worked with him in previous
Jeremy Tuel
ministry settings in addition to an eight-member interview team at MJMC. In his former positions, Tuel led and coordinated the work of worship musicians, worship leaders, and tech volunteers in addition to preaching and teaching new member and discipleship classes. He served most recently as a volunteer worship leader and small group leader at Victory Church in Lancaster and was previously ordained by the Brethren in Christ and the Southern Baptist Church. Tuel’s new position at MJMC combines the duties of two positions previously covered by a pair of part-time pastors. “God has shown His faithfulness in my life more deeply than ever,” Tuel said. “I pray daily through the fruit of His Spirit in Galatians 5, that He would be known in and through me.” Originally from Frederick County, Md., Tuel met his wife, Sara, at Eastern University and they were married in 2001. They have three children, ages 12, 10, and 8. As a family, they enjoy playing games together and walking their dog, Jenny.

God began to work in his heart about evangelism as a teenager and eventually led him to Ambassador Baptist College for ministry training. Dan and Elizabeth were married shortly after graduating from Bible college and they are serving the Lord in evangelism today. God has blessed the Brubakers with a young and growing family.
