Preventing Scams In The Time Of Coronavirus By Dayna M. Reidenouer

Tests, treatments, and cures for the novel coronavirus are advertised online and even by text or phone call, but those products may only leave buyers with less money and no good outcomes. “Fraudsters prey on public fears during times like these,” said Master Trooper Kelly Osborne, community service and public information officer with Troop J - Lancaster of the Pennsylvania State Police (PSP). She added that scammers often target seniors, and worry about contracting COVID-19 may cause people to make decisions they would not make in other circumstances. See Scams pg 4

In early April, when Larry Stoner, Region 1 operations coordinator with Mennonite Disaster Service (MDS), 583 Airport Road, Lititz, learned that Bird-inHand Fabric, owned by Sylvan and Loraine Stoltzfus, had been creating masks for anyone who requested one in response to the COVID-19 crisis, he was moved to involve MDS to help. “They had been making them for about two weeks out of the kindness of their hearts, and they were giving fabric and getting elastic and (wire) for the nose (to others who were making them),” Stoner explained. Bird-in-Hand resident Manny Flaud, who is associated with the Lancaster MDS unit, knows the Stoltzfuses, and he contacted them on behalf of MDS. “(The Stoltzfuses) were overwhelmed with thousands of requests (for masks),” recalled Stoner, who noted that requests had come from the Lancaster County Prison, Red Rose Transit Authority, and Water Street Mission, along with retirement homes. “Everyone was desperate for face masks made of fabric.” Stoner noted

“Star Wars” Fans Feed Homeless In Lancaster By Ann Mead Ash

Kaden Stetler of Lancaster, one of the founders of Rebel Cause, an organization that began feeding homeless people in Lancaster on March 19, credits “Star Wars” with the inspiration behind the group’s mission. “‘Star Wars’ has always been my inner mythology,” explained Stetler. “It’s about helping others and hope and inspiring other people to do the right thing.” Rebel Cause, a group made up of about 15 members living in the Lancaster area and beyond, was founded in 2015 with a dedication to uniting “Star Wars” fans and doing good in the community. The Rebel Cause mission statement reads in part, “We are committed to helping the homeless in Lancaster County with dignity and compassion.” Until recently, Rebel Cause aided local members of the homeless community with regular events. “ We sponsored

community meals on the weekends and held fundraisers for needs of the homeless community,” said Stetler. “We would use whatever space was available to us, including churches and community centers.” When Gov. Tom Wolf announced that all non-essential businesses would be closed, Stetler found himself out of work. “I knew Rebel Cause was in a position to do something (for the homeless),” said Stetler. “We started the very next day making food and handing it out to the homeless, and through that I became officially connected with the city to use one area to serve meals.” Rebel Cause volunteers hand out dinners each evening of the week, including weekends, at 6:30 p.m. from the sidewalk on Kaden Stetler of Rebel Cause the Beaver Street side of St. stands with a truckload of Mary’s Catholic Church, which is food that he and his crew of located at 119 S. Prince St., Lanvolunteers then turned into caster. Food for the meals is meals for Lancaster’s homedonated by a large number of less population. Rebel Cause is area contributors. The dinners made up of “Star Wars” fans are cooked at Rumplebrewskin’s, with a mission to aid the located at 834 N. Plum St. in

homeless.

Stetler noted that about 20 volunteers per day take part in the efforts to hand out meals and run the day center. To promote safety and comply with Pennsylvania COVID-19 recommendations, volunteers wear masks reminiscent of “Star Wars” characters and also hand them out to those who need them. The masks are made by MADS Enterprises in Lancaster, and Stetler reported that about 300 masks had been given away by mid-April. the right people to know where to buy things we need,” he noted. By mid-April, MDS was being asked to help make clinical masks for WellSpan. “The goal is to have groups manufacture 100,000 per week for the next eight weeks starting (the week of April 13),” said Stoner, who noted that the masks, which will be used by doctors, will be used one time and then thrown away. “The pattern is a little different and the material is not fabric,” shared Stoner, who said that he believes the volunteers can manufacture 25,000 of the masks per week. Stoner is recruiting members of the Plain community to help with the mask effort, and he has also been spreading information about COVID-19 best practices. “We are trying to get the word out about wearing masks, social distancing, and washing of hands … to take this seriously,” he said. masks. “We got a pattern from WellSpan (Ephrata Community) Hospital (for an approved fabric mask),” said Stoner, who noted that specifications included the type of material to be used and the length of elastic. “We switched to their pattern as soon as we understood that it was acceptable to the hospital for the health care workers,” said Stoner. “Word was put out on April 3 that we needed volunteers willing to cut the patterns and get (cut material) to sewers,” recalled Stoner, who noted that shortly after that the Groffdale Conference Mennonite Community began cutting and sewing face masks to assist the other sewers. Because the Groffdale community does not drive cars, MDS provided drivers to move material. “On April 7, we started cutting material and getting it to sewers,” Stoner stated, sharing that the 100 volunteers created 20,000 masks the first week. “ We are calling every fabric shop in the county,” said Stoner on April 13, who had traveled to Schaefferstown for material as well as to pick up 70 rolls of quarter-inch elastic. “We are getting connected with

Lancaster, a restaurant that has been closed by the COVID-19 restrictions. According to Stetler, about five volunteers arrive at the restaurant daily around 2 p.m. to start cooking. “We package meals at 5:30 and head to St. Mary’s around 6 p.m.,” reported Stetler. Since the group members began providing meals, they have given out an average of 700 to 1,000 meals weekly. In addition to handing out meals, Rebel Cause has opened a day center at Crossroads Mennonite Church at 401 Church St., Lancaster. The day center is open from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays. The center offers coffee, snacks, movies, books, art classes and art therapy, yoga classes, and live music. “We have a 20-person limit, and we are close to full each day,” Stetler said.

Aaron’s Acres Finds Permanent Home In Manheim In 2018, Aaron’s Acres celebrated 20 years of providing socialization and recreation for children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with special needs. The nonprofit organization held camp at the Jewish Community Center in Lancaster until 2013. Starting in 2014, the program was hosted by the Manheim Community Pool and Memorial Park. In 2019, the six-week camp served 220 campers. For the past several years, Aaron’s Acres has been searching for a permanent home. Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres, had looked at a number of county locations, but nothing suitable had been found. “We really wanted to be part of an inclusive community,” recalled Paskoff. “We didn’t want … an entire building to ourselves.” In the past year, Paskoff began talking to Jonathan Hollinger, executive director of Pleasant View Retirement Community, 544 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The retirement community plans to build a cultural center on the Hoffer Farm property across from the memory care and skilled nursing care facilities on North Penryn Road. Pleasant View has invited the Manheim Borough Library to be part of the center, and Paskoff reported that Aaron’s Acres has been invited as well. “Pleasant View will build a building, and we will have a condo

manned by its participants. In addition to the benefits offered to Aaron’s Acres, Paskoff is excited about the purpose of the cultural center, noting that Hollinger hopes to bring other nonprofit organizations to the campus. “(It will be) a lot of different organizations coming together to create a strong community with people of all abilities and ages,” said Paskoff. “It’s a dream come true.” Paskoff said that if the way is clear, the cultural center will be completed by 2022. She noted that an aquatics center is planned for completion in 2023. For Paskoff, the move to the new center will signal an important shift for Aaron’s Acres. “The first 20 years, we just grew,” said Paskoff. “Now I feel for the next 20 years, we will launch and take off in a different way.”

relationship,” said Paskoff, who noted that Aaron’s Acres hopes to utilize up to 7,000 square feet in the building. Paskoff noted that other plans for the cultural center include housing therapeutic alpacas in a barn area, along with sheep, goats, and chickens. Pleasant View also plans to expand a hydroponics program on the site. The farm property where Aaron’s Acres will be located offers additional possibilities to the organization. “We will have farm land to grow herbs, vegetables, and flowers,” said Paskoff, who sees the move as an opportunity to expand the Aaron’s Acres Plus program, which began providing activities for 22- to 30-year-olds in early 2019. “Aaron’s Acres has been for ages 5 to 21, but we are going to go to age 30,” said Paskoff. “We want to have meaningful programs (for individuals in that age group),” she noted, adding that farming, and working with animals, will be options along with taking part in Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows participants with developmental disabilities to give back to others rather than just being recipients of services. “(Our clients) will be able to go into the (retirement) community and play games and have a snack with residents,” said Paskoff, who noted that clients could also volunteer at the library. Paskoff also hopes Aaron’s Acres can open a café to be

Osborne noted that recent scams that have surfaced involve the economic stimulus, claims about products marketed as coronavirus treatments, or the promise of services related to the virus in an attempt to distract someone in order to commit theft or another property crime. The U.S. Department of Justice (DOJ) has published a long list of frauds that have sprung up around COVID-19 and good strategies for avoiding them at www.justice.gov/coronavirus/ combattingfraud. “Families can help (loved ones) see that the scammers are there en force and that coronavirus is now a new trigger to alarm potential scam targets,” Osborne said. “Warn them to get any information about ‘medical breakthroughs’ from either the World Health Organization (WHO) or the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC). Daily updates get posted with truthful information on these sites.” Osborne offered four tips that

can be useful in protecting an individual from a scam. -Never accept an online offer for a coronavirus vaccine. “We don’t have one, and if we did, our own doctors would offer it,” Osborne said. -Never click on any link from an unfamiliar source, as that is the primary way that scammers are able to install malware or viruses on a computer. The DOJ also recently announced that malicious sites have been masquerading as public health organizations, such as the American Red Cross, or have tried to trick people into providing bank account details, so even links from trusted email senders should be verified before clicking. -Do not buy masks, medicines, sprays, or other products purporting to protect against the coronavirus. The CDC has said that cloth masks may be helpful in preventing the spread of COVID-19, and handmade masks are acceptable for compliance with Pennsylvania’s shutdown regulation that masks must be worn in public and in the workplace. However, Product Safety

and Consulting Services owner Misty Henry stressed that cloth masks have not been tested according to FDA or National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health standards to prove prevention or mitigation of virus transmission. -Do not accept any offers that require investment in any security that purports to provide a breakthrough treatment, cure, or vaccine against the coronavirus. “The best families can do is keep our aging loved ones informed by alerting them to what is a present danger,” Osborne advised. If someone believes they or a loved one is a victim of a scam, they should contact their local police department or the PSP, if they live in an area covered by the state police, using the respective agency’s nonemergency number. The PSP nonemergency number is 717-299-7650, and Lancaster County Radio may be reached at 717-664-1180. The latter will route phone calls to the appropriate police department. Fulton Bank Issues Loans Fulton Bank N.A., a subsidiary of Fulton Financial Corporation, recently announced that, to date, through its participation in the Small Business Association’s (SBA) Paycheck Protection Program (PPP), it is issuing nearly $2 billion in SBA guaranteed loans to more than 9,400 small business, nonprofit and commercial clients. Fulton began accepting applications to the PPP in early April and reopened its application queue when Congress approved a second round of funding after the first round was depleted. In March, U.S. lawmakers passed the Coronavirus Aid, Relief and

Economic Security (CARES) Act to provide emergency economic relief for businesses that have been negatively impacted by COVID-19. The PPP, which was established by the CARES Act, authorizes banks to provide funding for qualifying small to mediumsized businesses to be used for employee job retention and certain other expenses. Fulton Bank N.A. operates approximately 230 branches in Pennsylvania, Maryland, Delaware, New Jersey and Virginia. Additional information on Fulton Bank can be found at www. fultonbank.com.

A NiVan man finds an unbroken pot to hold dirty water in the aftermath of Cyclone Harold. Local residents are encouraged to support relief efforts offered by Friends in Action. On April 6, Cyclone Harold, a Category 5 cyclone and the second-largest storm in Vanuatu’s history, almost leveled the South Pacific island country. To the people in Vanuatu’s hundreds of NiVan villages, some of whom still wear leaves or traditional loincloths for clothing and survive on subsistence farming, the storm was catastrophic. Dense jungle was shredded into barren sticks,

entire villages were wiped out, roads were destroyed by flooding, and mudslides and debris caused a delay in the efforts to account for hundreds of villagers. Any food gardens and crops were decimated. To cope, people foraged what was left of gardens and root crops for food. Rivers and creeks have been used as water sources, but contamination from livestock has led to waterborne illnesses. “We’ve been eating what we can find on the ground, but that will soon be gone. I don’t know how we will survive,” a NiVan man speaking his native Bislama tongue told FIA missionary partners in the area. An estimated 80% to 90% of the villagers’ bamboo huts with grass-thatched roofs were destroyed. There is little to no palm leaf left, and it will take two to three years to regrow. With no income to buy building supplies, the people are in dire need of shelter. “Thirty to forty of us women and children packed into a larger hut while the wind was pulling at the roof and sides and rain pounded through. The men ran outside and stood around the hut to hold the roof on. I was scared we all would die,” shared a NiVan village woman, recalling her village’s harrowing tale of survival. Partnering with missionaries, national pastors, and workers in the region, FIA is raising funds to secure cyclone relief supplies for the villages of Suranda, Mataloi, and Valui. Food bundles of tin tuna, rice, and noodles feed a family of eight for a week, totaling less than $3.25 per person daily. Recovery bundles - consisting of nails, hammers, handsaws, shovels, machetes, and twine and averaging less than $5 per villager - provide building supplies for an entire village to create new homes. “This effort is something everyone can take part in even from the safety of their couches at home. Every contribution will save lives,” said FIA executive director Tim Johnston, noting that this opportunity is also a way to reach the NiVan people with a tangible demonstration of God’s love. Readers’ donations will be matched up to $10,000 until Sunday, May 31, when given to FIA’s “Where Needed Most Fund” at www.fiaintl.org/donate.

Prima Actor Shares Song WITF, School District To Downing Named Director While stages at local theaters Offer TV Programming Of Operations across the Susquehanna Valley remain dark, Broadway actor Adam Pascal has added his voice in support of Lancaster’s Prima Theatre, of which he is a veteran guest artist. Singing the anthem “Seasons of Love” from “Rent,” Pascal recorded an exclusive video from his home in California, asking viewers to donate to the theater’s Hero Fund. The video can be seen on Prima Theatre’s Facebook page and at http://primalancaster.org/hero. Americans for the Arts estimates an economic impact related to arts and culture organizations at more than $4.5 billion across the United States. Locally, Prima Theatre responded by producing AtHome streaming content to benefit the theater and out-of-work theater artists. Prima has announced the Hero Fund, sharing the opportunity to help the organization until it reopens. The theater is also providing benefits to those who donate to the Hero Fund, including an on-stage toast with the cast of its fall show “Motherhood: The Musical.” Pascal has had leading roles in “Rent,” “Aida,” “Memphis,” “Cabaret,” “Chicago,” “Disaster!,” “Something’s Rotten,” and “Chess.” In 1996, Pascal landed the role of Roger Davis in the

Adam Pascal original cast of “Rent,” for which he won Drama League and Obie awards. In addition to his theater credits, Pascal has toured internationally, as well as recorded numerous solo albums. Founded in 2010, Prima played in more than 15 venues until taking residency in its own theater in late 2018. The venue offers free parking and state-ofthe-art lighting and audio. Prima presents boutique musicals and concerts and hosts special events. In addition to Adam Pascal, Prima’s Broadway guest artists have included Stephen Schwartz, Billy Porter, Alice Ripley, Jason Robert Brown, and Shoshana Bean.
