Plus, special surprise guests will take turns in a dunk tank. Chamber coordinator Kelly Lauver is also excited about the addition of a Kids Color Fun Run. The half-mile run will step off at 7:30 p.m. Children ages 5 to 12 are welcome to sign up for the fun run in advance at https://runsignup.com/Race/PA /Manheim/RockNGlow5K. The 5K race will begin promptly at 9 p.m. Runners and walkers will once again be treated to live music and light shows along the race route. Organizers encourage every participant and spectator to add to the energetic atmosphere

by dressing head to toe in clothes and gear that will glow. The 5K course will include North Main Street, West Stiegel Street, South Hazel Street, East High Street, North Laurel Street, Park View Drive, Lake View Drive, Red Rose Drive, North Linden Street, and East Adele Avenue. American Legion Auxiliary Unit 809 of Maytown will hold its 57th annual Antique, Art, Craft, and Collectible Show on Memorial Day, Monday, May 27, from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. The event will take place in the Maytown Square and on East High Street, preceding the annual Maytown Memorial Day Parade at 4 p.m. Organizer and Auxiliary member Sara Gutshall explained that the antique show was established by the late Marilyn Fink, former Auxiliary president, in 1959. In its early years, the event had approximately a dozen vendors. Gutshall said the show continued growing through the years and now includes 50 or more vendors who travel from around Pennsylvania, Delaware, and Maryland to take part in the event. Items for sale will include handmade soap, candles, bird feeders, yarn, lawn art, oils, teas, spices, books, jewelry, glass, pottery, outdoor furniture, bamboo plants, crystals and gemstones, antiques, and more. Gutshall emphasized that the event is a fundraiser to support veterans - something near and dear to her own heart as she had three brothers and numerous uncles and nephews who served in the military. “I can’t give up on our veterans,” remarked Gutshall. “And I’m dedicated to Maytown because I was born here.” The Auxiliary - which Gutshall noted is 65 members strong - supports veterans at the Lebanon, Coatesville, and Southeastern VA hospitals in various capacities, including sending monetary donations, clothing, and other supplies as needed. Auxiliary members crochet blankets for veterans at Rheems Nursing Home and Paramount Senior Living. Members also deliver care packages to local veterans who are ill or otherwise in need. The parade will stage on North King Street beginning at 3 p.m., with the procession kicking off promptly at 4 p.m. This year’s grand marshal will be James Embly, a longtime resident of

Maytown. The Maytown Memorial Day Parade Committee is encouraging community groups, family units, and individuals not currently signed up to participate in the parade to consider being part of this year’s parade. For instance, children in the neighborhood could form a bicycle group, decorate their bikes, and ride in the parade as a unit. All groups must register in advance, and any interested groups or individuals may do so by emailing mrguinivan@comcast.net. Prior to the start of the parade, ceremonies will be held at each of the cemeteries in Maytown. Beginning at 3 p.m., members of the local Girl Scouts and any other school-age children who would like to participate will decorate the graves of veterans buried in the cemetery at Maytown Reformed United Church of Christ, 11 E. Elizabeth St. The Bainbridge Band will perform selections in honor of all veterans. Afterward, the assembly will move to the cemetery at St. John’s Lutheran Church, 11 N. Queen. Children Invited To Trout Fishing Derby The Manheim Sportsmen’s Association will hold its annual children’s trout fishing derby on Sunday, May 26, from 1 to 4 p.m. at Chickies Creek in the Manheim Memorial Park. The event will take place rain or shine. More than 620 trout will be stocked between the softball field and the High Street dam. The trout were donated by the Manheim Sertoma, the Lititz Sportsmen’s Association, and the Manheim Sportsmen’s Association. The contest is free and open to all children and youths ages 5 to 15. Prizes will be awarded in two categories. During the derby hours, participants will be asked to stop fishing after they have caught five trout in order to provide opportunities for other children to catch trout. All Pennsylvania fishing rules will apply. Participants are asked to bring their own fishing equipment; no treble hooks or spinners will be allowed. For safety reasons, the east side of the creek and the park will be closed this year. No preregistration is necessary. Hot dogs and sodas will be sold.

Sara Yowell, a seventh-grade student at Elizabethtown Area Middle School, was recognized for being the only student to help a cafeteria worker clean up a spill. Devlin Dowhower, a Mill Road Elementary kindergarten student, was recognized for turning in money he found at the school. The students’ good deeds were acknowledged at ceremonies held recently at their respective schools, where they received a certificate of recognition, a Do the Right Thing T-shirt, and a gift certificate. Do the Right Thing is a national program and a collaborative effort between Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC), the Elizabethtown local police departments, and the Elizabethtown Area School District. The program seeks to recognize students in the community who have distinguished themselves through their accomplishments, attitude, or efforts, and it emphasizes random acts of kindness that otherwise may go unnoticed. School staff members and police officers typically nominate students whose positive actions come to their attention, but any adult over the age of 18 can nominate a student. Nomination forms are available at www.eactc.org. EACTC is a community organization committed to improving the lives of children, youths, and families in the Elizabethtown area. Using research-based programs, initiatives, and strategies, the organization guides and encourages youths in making positive choices about alcohol, drugs, and other high-risk behaviors. EACTC partners with the schools, parents, churches, and businesses to make positive changes in the community.

Lady Bears Advance to L-L Softball Final by Eric Pyles

The saying is that revenge is a dish best served cold but for the Elizabethtown softball team it is a dish best served in the playoffs. With a 1-0 triumph over Warwick in their May 15th Lancaster-Lebanon League semifinal clash, the Lady Bears not only earned their first trip to the L-L title game since their 2008 title season they also avenged this year’s 6-5 regular season loss to the Lady Warriors. Kristin Geesey was nearly all the

Sadie Seaman launches a home run to centerfield in the second inning to give the Bears their only run in their 1-0, L-L League semifinal victory over Warwick last Wednesday.

Lady Bears needed to secure the win with the staff ace tossing a complete game four-hitter while striking out two with no walks issued or runs allowed. The masterpiece was her second straight shutout victory and runs her scoreless stretch to a whopping 18 innings. Geesey also collected two of Elizabethtown’s four hits, rapping out doubles in the fourth and sixth innings but it was Sadie Seaman’s lone base knock that was the difference maker. Seaman drilled a second inning, two out, solo homer to center that accounted for the game’s lone run, putting the Lady Bears into the L-L title game opposite LampeterStrasburg. The result of that title game with L-S had E-town on the wrong side of a 9-1 final, giving the L-L crown to the Lady Pioneers who maintained their undefeated season in the process. Geesey took the loss for six innings on the mound where she surrendered 11 hits and nine runs to go with just two strikeouts and three walks. The Lady Bears collected seven hits but Jessica Zimmerman was the lone player with more than one. It was Zimmerman’s lead-off single in the second that led to E-town’s lone run with the freshman working her way around to score on a wild pitch. The run broke up LampeterStrasburg’s shutout bid but still left the Lady Bears in a 3-1 hole on their way to the 9-1 final. E-town earned their semifinal spot with a 4-0 win over then undefeated Donegal on May 11th in a quarterfinal tussle at Penn Manor.

This time Geesey was all the Lady Bears needed, scattering six hits with no walks or strikeouts on the mound while driving in two of the four runs at the plate. Those two runs were the first of the game for Elizabethtown and both came on Geesey base hits. Her first inning single plated Alyssa Hamilton who doubled as the lead off. Geesey’s second hit was of the two-bag variety and also pushed Hamilton across making it a 2-0 game in the third inning. Haylee Calaman followed Geesey’s double with a one out single that allowed Geesey to score for a 3-0 cushion. Jessica Zimmerman accounted for the final RBI, hitting into a fielder’s choice in the fifth inning that plated Geesey who had started the frame with her second double of the game. Before the Lady Bears could kick off their L-L title quest they had to finish up their regular season. They did so with a 2-1 loss to Spring Grove on May 9th. Geesey covered all seven innings and allowed just two runs with only one being earned but ended up with the loss despite allowing just three hits. She issued three free passes but added five strikeouts as a counter. She also scored Elizabethtown’s lone run after leading off the bottom of the fourth with a single. Geesey ended up on third after a Spring Groove error which set the stage for Calaman’s sac fly to center that cut the Lady Rocket lead down to 2-1. The Lady Bears were unable to get anything else going, putting the final at 2-1.

TENNIS Ethan Lown and Trent McBride tied the final bow on the 2019 tennis season on May 10th with a 6-1, 6-3 loss to Hershey’s Nate Shaw and JT Mullins, the third seed in District 3-3A Doubles Championship. VOLLEYBALL The boys’ volleyball team also completed their 2019 campaign with a L-L quarterfinal loss to Warwick on May 10th. The 3-0 setback put the Bears final record at 8-8 which was a few spots outside the District 3-3A field. That meant the 25-12, 25-8, 25-16 result would go down as the final match of the season for Elizabethtown. Nate Seeger capped his second team Section Two All-Star nod with a 12 assists, four digs, one block, and one kill game. Nick Chapman, who had four kills, three digs and one assist against Warwick, joined Seeger on the second team All-Section list while Jake Sevcik and Jacques Mortha picked up first team honors. Mortha and Sevcik combined for 10 digs against the Warriors with Mortha adding four kills and four digs. TRACK The track and field teams opened their postseason on Friday May 10th and Saturday May 11th with their annual pilgrimage to Hempfield High School the Lancaster-Lebanon League Championship Meet. Katie Locker was the star, collecting three gold medals and one meet record but numerous other Bears were able to shine as well

leading to a third-place team finish for the Lady Bears and a 15th place finish for the boy’s side. Derek Heisey was the lone member of the boy’s team to garner team points in multiple events with his second place run in the 300H accounting for the bulk of E-town’s team points. The junior clocked a 39.74 to grab silver and qualify for the District 3-3A meet in the process. Heisey also qualified for districts in the 110H despite his 15.95 leaving him just 0.01 seconds off the podium and in ninth place. Heisey’s other team event point gathering came in the high jump where he finished fourth with a top jump of 6’. Robert Weidler joined Heisey on the high jump medal stand, clearing 5-6 to finish in a four-way for sixth place and giving Elizabethtown their final team points. The highlight of Locker’s three gold medal runs came in the 1600m where she not only captured her second straight league title, her 4:59.58 also clipped the meet record that had stood for 11 years. Cat Shontz and Madeline Quinn joined Locker on the 1600m medal stand with Shontz and her fifth-place time of 5:11.46 doing well enough to join Locker at districts. Quinn’s 5:14.74 was good enough for

sixth at the league meet but did not meet the district qualifying standard. Locker’s second gold medal came in the 800m where her 2:15.46 just missed another meet record and counted as her third straight league title in the event. Sierra Kapcsos missed joining Locker on the podium by a mere two seconds, finishing ninth with a time of 2:26.03. Locker needed help from Quinn, Shontz and Kapcsos to claim her third gold medal with the quartet taking first in the 3200m relay. Their 9:31.08 ended up two seconds short of the meet record that was set back in 2009 by Warwick but was still good enough to earn an invite to Shippensburg for the district meet. Quinn will compete in districts as a solo artist in the 3200m. Quinn followed Shontz across the line with Shontz taking second with a time of 10:53.00 and Quinn taking third with a time of 10:58.30. The final Lady Bear to qualify for districts was Alicia Underkoffler. She earned her ticket with a fifth-place time of 47.16 in the 300H. Underkoffler had a near miss in her attempt to make it a two-event trip, finishing ninth in the 110H. Her time of 17.11 was 0.05 seconds off a podium finish at the L-L meet and just over a second off the district qualifying standard. Three different Lady Bears earned medals in the field at the L-L meet with Carly Sedun just missing a second trip to the medal stand. Her first and only trip to the podium came thanks to a toss of 108-1 in the discus, good enough for fourth place. Her near-miss came in the shot put where her 33-11.2 was the ninth best throw and just 0.3 inches out of eighth place. Megan Rider collected three medals over the two-day event, all in the jumps. Her best finish came in the long jump where a leap of 16-10.5 was good enough for fourth place. A 4-6 best in the high jump earned her a sixth place finish while she claimed seventh in the triple jump with a 33-11. Olivia Anson claimed Elizabethtown’s final medal with a sixth place toss of 111-10 in the javelin.

Mount Joy from pg 1 after area residents decorated veterans’ gravesites in the morning. An automobile division was added in 1920, with a prize for the best patriotically decorated car. The parade took a hiatus during World War II but was reinstated later on and continues to grow each year. Today the parade is organized by Kready and Sharon Funk. “We usually have a benefit auction in March to raise money to pay for the parade. This year we did not have one due to lack of volunteers,” explained Kready. Instead, letters were sent to local businesses seeking donations and offering advertisement opportunities in the parade program booklet. Kready emphasized that to ensure the parade can take place again next year, more volunteers are needed both in planning for the event and on parade day. To sign up to volunteer on parade day or for planning the 2020 parade, interested individuals may email mtjoyparade@aol.com.

Several Mount Joy-area organizations, including the historical society, Community 4-H Club, Athletic Association, Chamber of Commerce, Rotary Club, Lions Club, and Milanof-Schock Library, will take part in the parade, as well as local churches, sports teams, businesses, radio stations, and fire companies. Rep. Dave Hickernell, Commissioner Dennis Stuckey, and Mayor Timothy Bradley will also ride in the procession. Donations of nonperishable food items for the Mount Joy Food Bank will be collected by volunteers and put into a trolley featured in the parade. This year’s lineup is a far cry from the original parade held in Mount Joy in 1881 to honor individuals who sacrificed their lives in military service to the United States. Kready said the first parade consisted of one band, several Civil War veterans, one local fire company, and children from a local orphans’ school. In the early 1900s, the parade went down Main Street
