Schreiber Center Names Ambassadors Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development has announced the children who will serve as its ambassadors this year. The stories among the ambassadors are all different, and their challenges are unique, but their families have one thing in common: They sought and received assistance from Schreiber, 625 Community Way, Lancaster. David Albino, who turned 5 in January, was born with cerebral palsy. He started services with Schreiber when he was an infant and now receives occupational, physical and speech-language therapies and attends Schreiber’s S.T.A.R.S. preschool. As a result of his work at Schreiber, David has learned to sit up, stand, speak and walk and continues to improve his ability to move independently with his walker and to speak more clearly and with more words to better communicate. He and his parents live in Lititz.
Cooper Brubaker, who is 6 years old, was born with skeletal dysplasia, a rare form of dwarfism. He receives occupational therapy, working on building strength and endurance in his muscles. He has been coming to Schreiber for a little more than a year, and his mother, Nicole, said he has made tremendous progress. He and his parents live in Penn Township near Manheim. Jalaya Cooper, who turned 10 in January, was diagnosed with hypotonia, meaning low muscle tone, at the age of 7 months. Since then, she has received therapy to treat this condition and help her overcome a series of developmental delays. She receives all three therapies at Schreiber, working on fine motor skills in occupational therapy; focusing on core strength, balance and coordination in physical therapy; and improving her use of words, both in speaking and with a communication device. She and her parents live in Lancaster.
Elle Haines, who will turn 6 in May, was diagnosed with autism spectrum disorder and receives all three therapy services at Schreiber, and she previously attended S.T.A.R.S. preschool. She works on a variety of skills at Schreiber, from climbing on playground equipment and hopping to language and social skills. Elle lives with her parents and her brother, Harper, in East Hempfield Township. Gabriel Morales, who turned 5 in November, came to Schreiber as a result of developmental delays that have affected his speech and left him with sensory processing issues. At Schreiber, he has learned how to speak more clearly so others can understand him. He has also overcome many of his sensitivities to textures, including sand and grass, which has helped him enjoy family vacations to the beach. The nationally acclaimed Susquehanna Chorale invites people age 18 and older to audition for its 2020-21 concert season. There are openings for all voice parts. audition video and to download the audition forms, readers may visit www.susquehanna chorale.org and click on the “Auditions” tab. If restrictions are lifted in time, opportunities for live auditions may be made available on Mondays, June 8 and 15, and other dates this summer. A lot has been said lately about the importance of physical health as it pertains to the novel coronavirus. However, as people stay confined to their homes or report to jobs where they might be putting themselves at risk of illness, mental health must not be forgotten. “It is just as important to take protective action and precautions for your mental health as you would for your physical health. One cannot exist without the other,” advised Kim McDevitt, executive director of Mental Health America of Lancaster County (MHALC). “COVID-19 has changed the way we think about things. Where we had safety, we have insecurities. We are also conflicted with feeling anxious but also grateful for some of the gifts that See MHALC pg 2

Everyone is experiencing or is being affected by someone who is experiencing anxiety right now,” McDevitt said. Mental health treatment can be expensive, and McDevitt expressed concern for people who have lost their jobs and medical insurance and are unable to pay out of pocket for mental health supports. She noted that MHALC is currently working on connecting people to assistance. MHALC provides services free of charge to the public and relies heavily on charitable support. Its main fundraising event was scheduled in April and had to be canceled, so McDevitt suggested that individuals may contribute to the Mental Health Sustainability Fund by visiting www.mha lancaster.org/give-back/. A 24/7 mental health and crisis support line has been established for people dealing with anxiety or other difficult emotions. Individuals may call the toll-free warmline at 855-2842494. Additionally, readers may find resources and helpful information by visiting www.mha lancaster.org/program-services -updates-page-covid-19/ or finding MHALC on Facebook.

day-to-day.” Both solitude and unrelenting closeness can be challenges. For people who seek connection, McDevitt recommended video chats with friends and family or calling someone they might not have talked to in a while. She noted that it is valuable to ask three simple questions of someone who might be struggling with loneliness: Do you feel left out? Do you lack companionship? Do you feel isolated? The answers to these questions can help lonely people acknowledge their isolation and begin to open contact with others in a supportive social network. “Research shows that just reaching out and being there for someone can truly save a life,” said MHALC child/family advocate Gretchen Gaudioso. Hugs and even handshakes have been sacrificed for social distancing, and the lack of physical contact can have a real impact. McDevitt recommended snuggling with pets or meditating to achieve calmness when needing touch. Conversely, designating a getaway spot in a house or apartment and then informing cohabitants of a need for space before being overwhelmed may help with too much closeness, McDevitt said. Establishing a
routine for all household members ensures that there is order to each day, with time for short breaks built in. It is normal to feel anxiety, but when it persists or there is little to no relief during the day, it can be a good thing to take the mental health screening at www.mhalancaster.org/screen ing-tools/. If any of the symptoms are persistent or impede daily function, professionally trained MHALC staff members can provide a listening ear or guidance toward more intensive support, McDevitt said. MHALC has extended its hours to meet the increased need for 1-to-1 phone support, and it has created virtual support groups. “We have seen a spike on all of our online mental health screenings, most notably more than 50% increase on our anxiety and depression screenings,” McDevitt reported. More than half of the people who have taken the screenings have never received treatment. “This could be the first time they have experienced any symptoms or concern for their mental health, or their mental health challenges have increased to the point where they may need support.

JBT Funds Paycheck Protection Program
Donation Benefits Community Efforts In 2017, Elizabethtown College and Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce formed a partnership called Destination Etown. Elizabethtown College contributed $5,000 to the Revolving Loan Fund Program to support local businesses. Ten $500 grants were awarded to small businesses in Elizabethtown on a first-come, first-served basis. One of the businesses that received a grant was Brubaker Bros. Recognizing that many businesses and organizations may be struggling in the midst of the COVID-19 pandemic, the small, family-owned business invested its award back into the
community. Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS) received a donation made by Lori and Joe Funck, owners of Brubaker Bros. In addition, a portion of the $500 was given to the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, and the rest was contributed toward a GoFundMe initiative which will provide funds for helping other Elizabethtown businesses. The Funcks also matched the $500 award by contributing $500 of their own money, doubling the donation amount to be received by the designated organizations and GoFundMe campaign.
Jonestown Bank & Trust Co. (JBT) announced that the bank has issued $13.7 million in Small Business Association (SBA)-guaranteed loans to 269 businesses and nonprofit organizations based in Berks, Lancaster and Lebanon counties. The bank’s participation in the SBA Paycheck Protection Program (PPP) has been able to guarantee a paycheck to more than 2,300 local families during the COVID-19 pandemic. While JBT had not been an SBA-approved lender prior to the COVID-19 crisis, the bank quickly pursued necessary approvals

in order to be able to support its many business clients and their employees. During the first round of PPP funding in early April, JBT secured 59 loans valued at $4.2 million. When the second round of funding was available, the totals grew to 269 loans valued at $13.7 million, as of April 30. Founded in 1873, JBT currently has assets of $655 million and 14 banking locations, including its newest branch, which opened recently in Robesonia. For more information about JBT, readers may visit www.jbt.bank.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) announced it received a $100,000 grant from the PNC Foundation to aid in its response to the COVID-19 crisis. The gift will be used to help meet the needs of food insecure residents of central Pennsylvania during the COVID-19 crisis. All crisis response boxes contain approximately 25 pounds of shelf-stable food as well as fresh milk, produce, and meat. Calvary Bible Church staff members (from left) Rich Hurlbert, associate pastor; Randal Pelton, senior pastor; Jonathan Kauffman, associate pastor; and Jill Beachy, administrative assistant, invite community members to visit the Mount Joy church during a gift card giveaway event on Saturday, May 30. 2020 EBC
aims to support small, local businesses that have been adversely affected by COVID-19. The focus is on locally owned and run Mount Joy businesses that either have closed or have been limited in their operations. One of the primary reasons organizers chose a $5 amount was to encourage people to spend some of their own money. For example, they might consider ordering an appetizer when they normally would refrain. Second, through small gifts to community members, church members hope to be a blessing to their neighbors. More than 900 gift cards as well as milk will be distributed on a first-come, first-served basis. Attendees will stay in their cars and process to the giveaway station. Forty volunteers from the church are scheduled to assist. Gift cards from a variety of businesses will be available. They include Gus’s Keystone Family Restaurant, Mount Joy Diner, Country Table Restaurant, Harvey’s Main Street Bar-B-Q, Papa’s Pizza, Two Cousins, Today’s Pizza, DiMaria’s Pizza, Tres Hermanos,

Unto’s Mount Joy warehouse, known as the Global Logistics Center (GLC), is an integral part of serving more than 2 million people each year. Expressing kindness to people around the world requires a process for transporting humanitarian aid to field partners so they can serve people by meeting their physical needs. Unto’s staff members, with the assistance of volunteers at the GLC, process, pack and ship humanitarian supplies to people around the world. The GLC will offer volunteer opportunities once social distancing protocols due to COVID-19 are lifted and activities resume. To learn more, readers may visit www.unto.com. For more than 25 years, Unto has leveraged strategic global partnerships and the service of volunteers to relieve suffering through humanitarian aid in more than 75 countries. Unto serves people around the world as part of Cru’s diverse, 190-country network.

Since 2005, Lancaster County residents have known Global Aid Network (GAiN) as more than a former fish hatchery. Over the decades, the 70,000-square-foot warehouse on Quarry Road in Mount Joy has become a place for volunteers to serve others as they prepare and pack humanitarian aid to go to people in more than 30 countries around the world. Recently GAiN in the United States, the humanitarian ministry of Cru, announced that the ministry changed its name to Unto. The name change came after two years of research, planning and prayer. This change will allow the ministry to more clearly convey its pursuit to serve people by relieving suffering, restoring dignity and revealing the eternal hope of Jesus. Unto will remain steadfast in its commitment to accelerate spiritual movements through humanitarian kindness, which helps Cru and its partners gain access, build credibility and increase effectiveness in ministry.
