Elizabethtown Mennonite To Host Open House By Chelsea Peifer
To celebrate the completion of its new addition and remodel, Elizabethtown Mennonite Church, 300 S. Spruce St., Elizabethtown, would like to invite the community to an open house. The drop-in event will take place from 2 to 5 p.m. on Sunday, June 2. Visitors will have the opportunity to tour the building and view a slide presentation showing the progress of the building project from its groundbreaking in May 2018 to its completion in January 2019. Soft-serve ice cream and other free refreshments will be available, as well as children’s activities. Stations will be set up throughout the church highlighting activities and programs such as the youth group, the Sewing Circle, a men’s exercise program, Women of God’s Word (WOW), Lunch in the Park, and more. About five years ago the church
board briefly considered moving out of its downtown location because of the seemingly limited options for expansion due to how landlocked the location was. “But the vote from the board was unanimous: No, we are going to stay in town because we’re called to the community,” pastor Conrad Kanagy recalled. “As I watched the congregation envision the addition, I really sensed it was to expand our ministry not just for ourselves, but for the community.” Lead trustee Paul Swanger said from there a plan to simply renovate the existing structure was considered; however, the limited space in the original kitchen along with a few other factors led to the decision to remodel the entire existing building and put on an addition. Along with Swanger, the Building Committee for the project included chair Lester Landis, Elvin Boll, Kate Ebersole, Steve Keener, Ron Kratz, and Don Miller. See Open House pg 2
The congregation of Elizabethtown Mennonite Church, represented by trustee Paul Swanger (left) and pastor Conrad Kanagy, invites the community to see the newly remodeled church and its new addition during a drop-in open house from 2 to 5 p.m. on June 2.

Women’s Group To Hold Brunch
Open House from pg 1 Seating capacity in the sanctuary was expanded to accommodate 213 people, and the wooden benches were replaced with chairs. The addition included a multipurpose room as well as new offices and a ministry room. Aside from all of the physical changes to the building, Kanagy explained that the church recently transitioned from a professional ministry model to calling forth ministers from within the congregation into using their giftings in the areas of worship, outreach, children, youths, and discipleship. Instead of having fulltime salaried staff, each designated minister serves parttime and receives a small stipend. “It has created a lot of energy. Our goal is to have a pipeline of ministry so that everyone is involved and mentoring someone,” continued Kanagy. “We’re also working at lowering the
barriers between the church and the community.” Kanagy noted that when Elizabethtown Mennonite Church formed in 1905, the congregation was a unique mix of longterm Mennonites and folks who lived in the town and came to accept Jesus Christ as their Savior during a major revival. “In many ways, that mix is still present today. God uses that mix to keep breathing life and to create a lot of stability,” said Kanagy. “There’s a sense of God’s movement in leading our congregation. It’s an amazing time … where God is moving in miraculous ways.” To learn more about the church, readers may visit https://etownmennonite.com. The church offers weekly Sunday services with classes for people of all ages at 9 a.m. and worship at 10 a.m. All are welcome. Readers with questions about the open house may call Swanger at 717-808-3565.

More than 100 women from across Lancaster County gathered at the Lancaster Country Club on May 3 to raise awareness and funds in support of women’s heart health at the Lancaster Go Red for Women Luncheon. The event raised more than $250,000 for the American Heart Association (AHA). The event celebrated the 15th anniversary of the AHA’s Go Red for Women movement by encouraging women not only to wear red to raise awareness of heart disease in women, but also to take action to reduce their personal risk factors and work toward healthier communities. Megan Orr, registered dietitian with UPMC Pinnacle, presented a lecture on heart-healthy eating tips as part of a heart disease risk-reduction plan. Attendees also listened to Doriana Musselman of Lancaster talk about life as the caregiver of her 2-year-old son, Emmett Musselman, who was born with a congenital heart defect that required his first of three open heart surgeries when he was 32 hours old. Doriana discussed her son’s surgeries and recovery, the stress it put on their family and the importance of keeping the entire family heart-healthy so they can enjoy more time together. Sue Keyser of WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital received the Go Red for Women Friend of Heart award for more than 15 years of volunteer service. Nazarene purchased the home from Dunkard Brethren in 2006. Guest speakers who were prominent visionaries for creating the nursing facility will highlight MHNRC’s formation and history at the 50th anniversary service, as well as share heartfelt testimonies. “Our theme (for the service) is faithfulness, Wilson said. “Mount Hope’s entire mission and vision is serving seniors regardless of their ability to pay or not, and that is really an upside-down way of thinking when it comes to long-term care. According to Wilson, more than 85 percent of MHNRC residents are on Medicaid, and the retirement home gave more than $1 million in charitable care last year. “Everything that does come in goes right back (to) the residents, Wilson explained. Being able to provide quality, affordable care to the low-income and disabled elderly population is something that Wilson emphasizes is only made possible through the support and generosity of the community. Wilson said that the famous saying “It takes a village to raise a child can be applied to the mindset at MHNRC. “An entire community of people must interact with Mount Hope for this unique vision to grow and, at the same time, fulfill a great need for affordable nursing care. The anniversary celebration will also include remarks from Manheim Mayor Scot Funk, and Rep. Mindy Fee will present MHNRC with a citation for serving area seniors for 50 years. A freewill offering will be received for MHNRC. “There is also going to be a time of prayer for Mount Hope - for covering and protection and that we can stay a vital part of the community, added Wilson. “Mount Hope is a real community asset. For more details on the anniversary celebration or to preorder chicken barbecue tickets, readers may contact Wilson at 717-6828026 or advancement@mthope nazarene.org. Additional information about MHNRC is available at https://mthopenazarene.org.
along Mount Hope Home Road and exiting by way of Cider Press Road. Other family-friendly events will include yard games and live music. A special anniversary service is planned for 1 p.m., with seating under a large tent. “If you’re a history buff in the community, you’re really going to want to come to this, said director of advancement Kris Wilson. “Not only does Mount Hope have a rich history in its foundational roots, but the Mount Hope nursing facility fills a special niche in the community - one that is instrumental in caring for the community’s aging population. MHNRC has 50 beds and has been named a five-star, deficiency-free skilled nursing facility by the Pennsylvania Department of Health. Although today MHNRC is a nonprofit ministry of Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, Wilson explained that the home got its start as the Mount Hope Dunkard Brethren Church Home in 1969 after the Dunkard Brethren Church purchased the Mount Hope Meetinghouse in 1965 for the purpose of establishing a home for the elderly in the community who were in need of care. MHNRC’s original structure - the Mount Hope Meetinghouse - was built in 1910 by the Chiques congregation as a place of worship. Ephrata Grace Point Church of the

The Sunday, Aug. 4, concert will feature Danny Kortchmar and Friends, studio musicians known for backing up Jackson Browne, Bonnie Raitt, and others. “They will play lots of familiar music,” said Deck. On Sunday, Aug. 11, country music singer Phil Vassar will play at the park. “His songs are very Americana country,” said Deck. On Saturday, Aug. 17, a special event highlighting the 50th anniversary of Woodstock will feature local artists and more well-known songs. The Sunday, Aug. 18, concert will feature blues artist Davy Knowles, and the season will conclude on Aug. 25 with the Cajun-flavored sounds of Terrance Simien and Zydeco Experience. “He is very engaging and a big crowd pleaser,” shared Deck. an evening of Beatles tunes, and a celebration of Woodstock among a number of other musical presentations for the organization’s summer season, which will run from Sunday, June 2, through Sunday, Aug. 25. All concerts will be held in Long’s Park, 1441 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster, beginning at 7:30 p.m., rain or shine. Most concerts will be on Sundays, but three Saturday night concerts will also be included in this year’s lineup. According to Deck, the series will kick off with the June 2 concert, which will feature John McEuen, one of the founders of the Nitty Gritty Dirt Band. “He is very engaging and will be great for the crowd,” said Deck. The second week of the Summer Music Series has been dubbed “tribute weekend,” according to Deck. “Come and hear songs you know and like to sing along to,” he said. On Saturday, June 8, local artist Corty Byron will play Beatles tunes in a “Post White Album” show, and on Sunday, June 9, Seven Bridges, a nationally touring Eagles tribute band, will take to the park stage. Another June show will feature Allegro, which will return for a Father’s Day performance on Sunday, June 16. Gospel and soul singer Liz Vice will bring her indie rockinfused sounds to the park on Sunday, June 23, and the United States Army Band “Pershing’s Own” will play a patriotic concert on Sunday, June 30, in conjunction with a fireworks display to celebrate Independence Day. The first concert of July will feature Nooky Jones, which Deck called a “hip” band, noting that it should attract a young crowd. The group will perform in the amphitheater on Sunday, July 7. On Saturday, July 13, Matches, a local band with a sound Deck noted is reminiscent of Tower of Power or Chicago, will play. The Sunday, July 14, band, MINAS, was chosen in response to suggestions made on the music series’ website. The Brazilian couple plays Latin-flavored music with an expanded appeal. “They have a wonderful sound,” said Deck, who described MINAS as bossa nova. “It’s very danceable without being hard driving,” he said. “It’s bring-someone-todance-with kind of music.” Lachy Doley, a Hammond organ player who is visiting from Australia, will play on Sunday, July 21. “He is the Jimi Hendrix of the Hammond organ. He pounds away,” said Deck. July will finish up with Celtic band Réalta on Sunday, July 28.

On Saturday, June 1, the Mastersonville Fire Company will host a building dedication and open house for the community from 9 a.m. to noon at its new building, located at 2121 Meadow View Road, Manheim. The building dedication will begin at 9 a.m. with various elected officials offering remarks. Pennsylvania State Fire Commissioner Bruce Trego, Sen. Ryan Aument, County Commissioner Joshua Parsons, Mount Joy Township Supervisor Debra Dupler, and Rapho Township Supervisor Lowell Fry are among those scheduled to attend. “We had some outstanding donors, especially for the three flagpoles since that was an unbudgeted item, and we will acknowledge them, too,” said Mastersonville Fire Company president Matt Shenk. Following the dedication, visitors are welcome to take self-guided tours of the new building. Firefighters will be on hand to answer questions. Free refreshments and educational displays will be set up inside the fire station as well. Mastersonville Fire Company is 100% volunteer with about 25 active members. It primarily serves 23 square miles in Rapho and Mount Joy townships. The fire company moved into the new 12,586-square-foot building on June 25, 2018. Construction for the project had started in May 2017. The new building allows for all of the equipment to be stored under one roof for the first time. “We no longer have equipment in a back garage,” said Shenk. “We now have storage space and room to work and maintain the apparatus and tools that we carry.” Training records, files, and company documents are now housed in one place
instead of throughout the building or in people’s homes. “The new fire station employs several safety measures in the way that it was designed and constructed,” explained Shenk. Entrance for the firefighters is from the side of the building so that the firefighters no longer need to walk in front of the apparatus when they arrive for a call. The apparatus now has more than two inches of clearance when it pulls out of the station, Shenk noted. Plus, the building is well-lit with automatic sensors that turn themselves on and off both inside and outside. Other new features include non-slip floors, washing machines to remove dirt and cancer-causing particles from fire gear, a ventilation system to remove carbon monoxide when the apparatus is started within the building, and a generator to keep the station running when the power goes out. The station is also equipped with a modern training room with A/V equipment to help the firefighters train and prepare for emergencies. In addition to the building dedication and open house, a Mastersonville Fire Company fundraiser is set to take place from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday, June 15, in the Barn & Barrel area on the grounds of Mount Hope Estate & Winery, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. Admission is free for the family-friendly event, which will feature live music, children’s games, giveaways and door prizes, food, a beverage release, and more. A variety of beverages and food, including fried chicken and Southern side dishes, will be available to purchase. Proceeds from the giveaways, door prizes, and food sales will benefit the fire company. For more details, readers may visit www.mastersonvillefire.com or www.parenfaire.com/releaseparty.html.

Bears End Season With Loss to Donegal by Eric Pyles
What a difference a week, or in this case 10 days, makes. Way back on May 11th the Elizabethtown softball team toppled previously unbeaten Donegal by a 4-0 count in a L-L quarterfinal clash. Ten days later the two squads met again, this time in the opening round of the District 35A playoffs where Donegal enacted revenge, coming out on top 4-1 and ending the Lady Bears season in the process. Elizabethtown managed just four hits against Donegal with half of them coming as part of E-town’s one run sixth. The single run only served to breakup the shutout as Donegal had already built a four-run lead with the Lady Bears unable to mount a serious attack. In fact, the single run rally was kicked off with a Donegal miscue in the form of a dropped third strike that allowed Megan Gray to reach base. Two batters later Haylee Calaman lined a single to right that moved Gray to third, just the second time all game that E-town was able to put a runner 60 feet from home. Two batters later Sadie Seaman collected the second of her two hits for the day, roping a single to right. Gray was able to scamper home, putting E-town on the board but Donegal quickly shut down the rally to maintain their comfy lead. Much like the rest of the game, Elizabethtown was unable to get anything going in the seventh, bringing an end to the game and their season. Kristin Geesey, who accounted for the final E-town hit, pitched all six innings and took the loss. She surrendered seven hits and issued two walks to go with four strikeouts with two of the four runs coming as unearned thanks to three Lady Bear errors.
TRACK Over the span of two days, for four Elizabethtown track and field athletes and one relay team, Shippensburg was the sweetest place on Earth, not Hershey. The reason, the District 3-3A Track and Field Championship Meet which was held at Shippensburg University on May 17th and 18th. The sweetness for the Lady Bear quartet of Katie Locker, Cat Shontz, Madeline Quinn and Sierra Kapcsos along with Derek Heisey comes from not only posting a top eight finish at the meet but earning a return ticket for the PIAA Championships on May 24th and 25th. The highlight of the weekend came with the Lady Bears lowering their school record in the 3200m relay. Locker, Quinn, Shontz and Kapcsos clocked a 9:21.07, nipping Carlisle for the gold while trimming over two seconds off the school record they set back at the Penn Relays. Locker and Shontz also qualified for the state meet in two solo events while Quinn qualified for a single event as well. Locker’s top finish came in the 800m where she turned in a bronze medal winning time of 2:15.28. She also met the state qualifying standard in the 1600m with a time of 4:59.69, placing her sixth at the district meet. Shontz just missed joining Locker on the 1600m medal stand, finishing 10th with a time of 5:06.50, but did well

for the PIAA meet in the 3200m with Quinn joining her. Shontz with her 10:49.55, turned in the seventh fastest 3200m time while Quinn missed the medal stand by four seconds with her ninth-place time of 10:58.20. Heisey competed in three events but was only able to pick up one return ticket to Shippensburg. He did that in the 300H where he finished sixth with a time of 40.13. He also took part in the 110H but bowed out of the competition after finishing his prelim heat sixth with a time of 16.38. Heisey also qualified in the high jump but did not register a jump while in Shippensburg. Alicia Underkoffler, Megan Rider and Carly Sedun were also part of the District 3 festivities but the trio was unable to capture any medals or PIAA berths. Underkoffler finished 19th in the 300H with a time of 48.28. Rider claimed ninth in the long jump competition with her jump of 107.25 falling just 3.5 inches out of eighth place. Sedun rounded things out by finishing 10th in the javelin with a toss of 106-9.

Chargers Claim CCAC Championship
May 29, 2019 - 11
Hershey Christian Academy To Open Hershey Christian Academy (HCA), a nondenominational, Christ-centered school in the Hershey area, is currently accepting applications for enrollment. The school will open its doors for the 2019-20 school year for prekindergarten through ninth grade. Plans include an expansion to grade 12 in the following year. Hershey Christian Academy is finalizing details with New Life Church of Hershey as the location for the school. Busing will be provided from several school districts, including Annville/Cleona, Derry Township, Lower Dauphin, Northern Lebanon,
Steelton, Central Dauphin, Elizabethtown, Middletown, and Palmyra. Chris Miller will be the inaugural administrator for HCA. Miller has a master’s in divinity in leadership development, with an emphasis in conflict resolution, as well as a master’s in religion. He has experience teaching Spanish and an online cyber school program. He also currently is the elementary ministry director at a local church. The academy will also offer an afterschool program to meet the needs of busy parents. Additionally, HCA will offer art, music, instrument lessons, computers,
physical education, and Spanish to homeschool students for a fee. Several teachers from Lancaster Mennonite School Hershey Campus, which announced its intent to close in June, have signed letters of intent to work for HCA in the fall. Tuition has been set for full-time students and will be prorated for half-day kindergarten and part-time prekindergarten students. Mount Calvary’s trip through the Commonwealth Christian Athletic Conference playoffs was a rollercoaster of emotion for players and fans alike, but culminated in a championship title for the club-their first in over ten years. On May 16, at Earl Wenger field in Fredericksburg, the Chargers took on the High Point Eagles, and after four lead changes, a collective 12 hits, seven hit batters, and a majority of runs scored on a combined seven errors, Mount Calvary emerged the victors by a slim 6-5 final score, naming them CCAC champs for the first time since 2007. “A sign of a successful team is the ability to win even when you don’t play your best. We certainly did not play our best baseball today, but we didn’t quit and we did what we needed to,” explained head coach Jim Sintic. High Point and Calvary had split results in their two regular season meetings, leaving each team eager to prove their dominance in the high stakes showdown. The Eagles controlled the outset of the game registering three runs in their opening at bat, leaving the Chargers scrambling to regain their footing and turn momentum in their favor. MC’s comeback effort was tedious, plating their first run in the bottom of the second when Damian Rutt worked his way around the bases after reaching on a walk. Evan Barnes put the ball in motion during his at bat and was called out at first, but allowed
Rutt to put the Chargers on the scoreboard. Still trailing 3-1 in the top of the third, a nice play on a sinking line drive by Charger right fielder Nathan Lerro helped limit further damage from the Eagle offense, putting a halt to the inning with two scoring threats left stranded. The first of two pivotal rallies for MC came in the bottom of the third, still having yet to lead the contest. Lerro and Dakota Lamb were each hit by wild pitches, setting the stage for Aidan Masters to power a line drive into right field, scoring Lerro and advancing Lamb to third. Hunter Stewart connected with the ball next, grounding out, but heads up base running and Eagle errors allowed both Lamb and Masters to cross the plate, giving the Chargers their first lead, 4-3. The advantage was short lived as the Eagles returned the favor in the subsequent inning, this time capitalizing on a Charger error in the field to level the contest at four, followed by a sacrifice fly to center field to gain the go-ahead run. With innings dwindling, the game became a defensive match with no alteration to the scoreboard until the bottom of the sixth, when the Chargers rallied for a final offensive surge. Tyler Masters got things rolling with a single, and Chip Stambaugh reached on a walk. David Ellis entered as a courtesy runner for Stambaugh, and both T. Masters and Ellis tore up the base paths, with T. Masters stealing third and scoring on an error to tie the run count at five.
Lerro stepped up to the plate for a crucial at bat and connected, reaching first on an error and more importantly providing the opportunity for Ellis to come home for the final run of the contest, 6-5. With only three outs separating them from the championship title, the Chargers took the field and made quick work of the first two Eagle batters with a ground out to A. Masters at shortstop, followed by a strikeout from relief pitcher, Stewart. The Eagles weren’t ready to surrender and made things interesting with a single and a walk to put runners in scoring position. Stewart’s final batter was ahead in the count 3-0, but after taking a breath to collect himself, Stewart worked his way back into a full count before sending the third strike straight down the middle for the win. “Hunter did a good job of making our opponents swing the bat,” noted Sintic. “I was proud of him coming back in that type of a high-pressure situation. He showed a great deal of composure.” Stewart earned the win in his three innings on the mound, striking out three and allowing two hits and zero runs. A. Masters started on the hill, lasting for four innings, striking out two. The championship win brings the team record to 13-4, now setting their sights on the PIAA District III playoffs. “I’m extremely proud of the way our team handled early errors and difficult circumstances-the way we battled through. We’ll look to continue that as we head into districts,” concluded Sintic.

The Elegance at Hershey, now in its ninth year, will take place from Friday to Sunday, June 7 to 9, in Hershey. The event is a fundraiser for the JDRF, the AACA Library and Research Center and the AACA Museum. Kicking off the weekend, The Grand Ascent will take place on June 7 and Saturday, June 8, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the hill course behind the Hotel Hershey, 100 Hotel Road, Hershey. Modeled in part on the previous Hershey Hill Climbs and the famed Goodwood Festival of Speed, the event will consist of speed exhibitions featuring mostly pre-war race cars sanctioned by the Vintage Sports Car Club of America (VSCCA). Grandstands will be available at the start and near the finish line, along with a trail up the hill where spectators may watch during runs on June 7 and 8. Each day during the midday hours, guests may opt to purchase a VIP ticket that will allow them ride in one of the cars with a professional driver. Vendors and food concessions will be stationed at the Midway along with a vintage race car display, plus additional family-friendly activities. The Concours d’Elegance will be available on June 9 from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. in the gardens of the Hotel Hershey. Modeled after the grandest concours hosted in Europe and America, the garden party is expected to feature more than 70 collector cars. The race cars from The Grand Ascent will be on display as well as automotive art, lifestyle art, and more. There is a per-person cost to attend. Among the vehicles to be displayed are two famous and important concept cars from the collection of General Motors. The vehicles will not be roped off, so visitors will be able to view the cars up close. The 1951 General Motors LeSabre show car was the first concept car produced by the GM Styling Section following World War II. The LeSabre reflects GM Styling vice president Harley Earl’s fascination with the sleek designs found in high-performance aircraft of the day. Museum Adds New Programs North Museum of Nature and Science, 400 College Ave., Lancaster, will expand its early childhood programs to include Little Explorer and Me, STEM Story Time, and Preschool Picassos: Merging Art and Science. All of these programs are intended for children ages 2 to 5. Little Explorer and Me will meet on the last Wednesday and Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon and will provide educational activities for preschool-age children in the museum’s Nature Gallery. This program is free with the price of admission and offers physical, craft, and tactile activities specifically aligned to each month’s museumwide theme. Hands-on activities will be included. The newest program, Preschool Picassos: Merging Art and Science, will allow children to discover scientific concepts through art. The program will be held on the first Saturday of every month from 10 a.m. to noon. As children experiment with paints, clay, and paper, they will not only learn about science, but they will create unique works of art.
