Vietnam Veterans Speak At EAHS pg 5
By Chelsea Peifer
As Elizabethtown Area School District (EASD) superintendent Dr. Michele Balliet greeted the audience gathered at LCBC Church in Manheim on May 30 for the Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) Class of 2019 commencement ceremony, she shared just a few of the accomplishments of the 283 graduates that could be encapsulated in numbers. Academically, the achievements of the class included having two National Merit Scholarship Program Finalists, three National Merit Scholarship Program Semifinalists, five National Merit Scholarship Program Commended Students, and a senior-led Brain Busters team that advanced to the finals for the first time since 2004 - ultimately taking home the silver medal in a “sudden death” round. Four seniors received an FFA Keystone Degree, six seniors
earned awards at the 2019 Science Olympiad, and one senior was named Grand Champion at the North Museum Science and Engineering Fair. Balliet pointed out that in the sphere of the arts, the senior-led cast was influential in helping the EAHS spring musical production of “Seussical, The Musical” to earn three awards at the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards: Outstanding Dance Number, Outstanding Student Orchestra, and Outstanding Musical. In athletics, Balliet noted that three teams won their Lancaster-Lebanon League section title, eight teams qualified for the PIAA District 3 tournament, and two teams qualified for the PIAA State tournament. The EAHS Class of 2019 also had 19 seniors named to LancasterLebanon League All-Star teams and 19 students who took part in sports recognition days to announce their plans to continue playing sports at the collegiate level. age 15 and up in addition to women. The event will include praise and worship led by Matt and Kim Goss, speakers, and a number of workshops. “This is for anyone, (whether) married or single,” said Germaine, who explained that the “BIG” in Dream BIG! stands for “Bringing in God.” “When you bring God into your dreams, you ignite your passion,” she explained. “It’s for anyone who has had a dream and let go.” As a single mom, Germaine noted that it was hard for her to dream again, but through founding the Dare to Dream events, she took that step. An important part of Dream BIG! will be the workshops, which Germaine noted are specifically geared toward helping people move forward. “One couple (will hold a) workshop on embracing brokenness,” noted Germaine. “(That’s about breaking) free (from) our past to dream again.”
The 2019 workshops will include “The Path That Brings Me Back to You - Visioning With God,” presented by Steve and Colleen Adams; “Become Aware of Your Presence,” presented by Dan Armstrong; “Wake Up, Get Up, and Go!” presented by Julia Banks; “Created for Greatness,” presented by the Dash Girls; “Rewind. Remind. Redefine. Peeking at Your Past to Purposefully Be Present for Your Future,” presented by Tabitha Deller; and “Finding Your Passion Through a Side Hustle,” presented by Jonathan and Denise Ebersole. In addition, a vendor fair featuring up to a dozen vendors will be held during the event. As an example of what can happen when one dares to dream, Germaine shared some of the events that have occurred in her life in the last year. “I was getting my story out and sharing about

After Cristin Germaine held the third Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2018, she felt a change was in order. “By the end of 2018, I was talking with trusted friends about where to go with Dare to Dream,” recalled Germaine, who felt the Lord pushing her to expand the audience for the next event. “This will be a brand-new venture,” said Germaine of the free re-envisioned event that will be held on Saturday, June 22, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The day will be called “Dream BIG!: Ignite Your Passion,” and it will be open to men and teenagers

Dare to Dream,” said Germaine. “God put it in my heart to do a song.” A friend directed her to Eric Copeland, who is president of a music label, and together they wrote a song called “Dream BIG!” that is based on Germaine’s life story. In September 2018, Germaine traveled to Nashville to record the vocals. Grammy winner Jonathan Crone oversaw the recording of the song, which Germaine co-produced with Copeland. A launch party for the song was held in May. “God is doing amazing things,” said
Germaine. “I always wanted to sing. I wanted to go to Nashville.” Realizing one of her dreams has inspired Germaine to want to share with others. “Dreaming reminds us of who we are in Christ,” said Germaine. “I want to encourage (attendees) to dream again and dream big!” There is no charge to attend Dream BIG! However, registration is necessary. Individuals wishing to attend may search for “Dream BIG! Ignite Your Passion” at www.eventbrite.com to register by Saturday, June 8. Child care and lunch will not

MESSENGER & NOTARY SERVICE
Veterans from pg 1 Nine members of the Vietnam Veterans Association of America, Chapter 1008 spoke to students from Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) as part of the students’ unit on the Vietnam War. The program allowed the current students to hear directly from Vietnam veterans about their personal responsibilities that ranged from combat infantry to aviation to supply. Among the many topics covered by the panel of veterans were the branch of service each served in, how it came to be that they fought in the war (drafted or enlisted), their own individual experiences and responsibilities in Vietnam, and what it was like upon their return. The students heard first-hand accounts of what it was like to be a sailor in the “brown water” navy, someone on board a “blue water” supply vessel, a member of a helicopter squadron taking soldiers to and from the combat zone, and a combat soldier in the jungle. Particularly impactful to the current high school students was the conversation that centered on the age each member of the panel was at the time he served in Vietnam. Many of the veterans were the same age as the high school students during their time in the war. The Vietnam veterans also took time to answer student questions, and they brought artifacts for the students to see. The panel consisted of Gary Landvater, Army; Ron Rhinier, Navy; Mike Krunitsky, Navy; Ron Horn, Navy; Doug Kelly, Navy; Ed Krasznai, Marines; Bruce Deisinger, Marines; John Dobish, Army; and Ed Bookman, Army.

We are truly amped up, proud and forever grateful to work and live in southcentral Pennsylvania.” Lapp Electric’s vans are a familiar sight in southcentral Pennsylvania, especially as they respond to service calls. “We live by the motto #LappToTheRescue,” Tim said. Well-versed in all types of residential, commercial and industrial electrical projects, Lapp Electric provides 24-hour emergency service, next-day service and scheduled service to best serve customers’ needs. According to Tim and Greg, the familyowned company is “powered by people going into the next generation.” The leadership philosophy at Lapp is one of service and gratitude. As second-generation business owners since 2002, Greg and Tim strive to continue to carry on the positive ideals that their father and mother instilled in them. “Our dad built this business through genuine relationships, and we

Organizer Dean Hershey shared that in celebration of this being the 20th year for the Motorsports Show, organizers decided to select a feature vehicle for the first time: the iconic Ford Mustang, now in its 55th year of continuous production. An area designated as the Mustang Corral will feature all six generations of Mustangs, as well as special models, Shelbys, Cobras, and other limited editions. “In upcoming years we’ll probably feature other cars,” added Hershey. mance, who has authored several books on the Mustang, will present on the history of the Ford Mustang at 10 a.m. in the LCBC auditorium. Afterward, Clor will be in the Mustang Corral to autograph free posters and distribute other free Ford merchandise. Another new aspect of this year’s show will be free oval track remote-control racing for both children and adults. “We’ll have up to eight cars at a time racing one another,” Hershey said. Other children’s activities will include face painting and inflatables. Free coffee and doughnuts will be available in the morning, and free candy, snow cones, and ice cream will be offered starting at 12:30 p.m. Additional food will be available to purchase from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., including barbecue sandwiches, french fries, burgers, hot dogs, salads, soft pretzels, beverages, and more. According to Hershey, more than 5,000 people attended last year’s Motorsports
Show, and it takes a total of 150 to 200 volunteers to run the event. “It’s just exciting with it being the 20th year to know where it came from. Back when it started, it was just a small get-together with some cars and some grills,” Hershey said. “There has been a ton of impact as well, with people plugging into LCBC and other churches after coming to the show, and it’s been really cool to hear those stories over the years.” LCBC Church is a contemporary, seekersensitive church and is currently ranked as the 18th largest church in the United States by Outreach Magazine with a weekly attendance of 17,000. In addition to its Manheim campus, LCBC has locations in Harrisburg, downtown Lancaster, York, Ephrata, Harleysville, Bloomsburg, Leesport, Waynesboro, Hanover, Hazleton, Coal Township, Mechanicsburg, and Lebanon. Whether it means installing a ceiling fan inside a customer’s home or completing a fullfacility LED lighting retrofit for a business owner, Lapp strives to provide solutions for its customers - no matter how small or large the project. Memorial Day Program from pg 1 Approximately 50 veterans gathered for a free breakfast and Memorial Day program hosted by Friends In Action Intl. (FIA) at the organization’s Middletown headquarters on May 25. FIA works in extremely remote areas of the world where there is little infrastructure. The 501(c)(3) organization uses construction projects as a platform to share the Gospel. Veterans from every branch of the armed forces were present. While the majority in the audience were Army Vietnam veterans, the gathering also included one Korean War soldier and three Operation Enduring Freedom veterans. The Veterans Appreciation Breakfast included remarks from Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. Attendees enjoyed a buffet of bacon, eggs, pancakes, sausage casserole, fruit and muffins while hearing from two Vietnam veterans. These speakers were Spc. Bob Rummel, a rifleman and radio operator from the 101st Airborne Division, and Col. James S. Weaver Jr. Additionally, multiple veterans spontaneously took the microphone to share their own stories of how they were treated immediately following the Vietnam War, as well as their combat experi-
ences and their healing since their service. During the program, attendees also recited the Pledge of Allegiance led by Kamille Peachey of State College, heard Lily Medich of York recite “In Flanders Fields, and joined Liberty Peachey of State College in singing “God Bless America. The event closed with Lee Greenwood’s “God Bless the U.S.A., during which every individual stood to honor the fallen. Guests left with goodie bags and door Members of Friends In Action Intl., veterans, and others prizes of memorial wreaths and patriotic gathered for a breakfast and Memorial Day program. arrangements. All will be invited back to attend FIA’s annual banquet on Friday, Nov. 1, at Best Western Premier The Central Hotel & Conference Center in Harrisburg. More information about the event will be posted at www.fiaintl.org. Readers are invited to view photos from the Veterans Appreciation Breakfast at www.facebook.com/FriendsInAction/. something extraordinary in this world are born with rare qualities that set them apart from the rest, stated Ryan. “Being successful is relative. Anyone can be successful if they try hard enough. Adrienne is the daughter of Carol and Michael Nolt and plans to attend Adelphi University to double major in dance and Spanish. She reminded her classmates that every one of them has a story to tell, a skill to share in life, and a way in which they are brilliant. Citing a real-life example from the book “Freakonomics about parents who named one son Winner and another son Loser, Adrienne reminded everyone that labels are not everything. “Of course, the book goes into some more detail, but the gist of this story is that Loser Lane went on to get a great education thanks to plentiful scholarships and eventually became a sergeant with the NYPD. Meanwhile, Winner spent a whole lot of time in jail. “Maybe I was born with the name Winner, maybe my name is Loser, but either way life has given me a label that seems impossible to off, just as it has with all of you, Adrienne continued. “But regardless of that label, I know I can’t ever sit back and forget to put the effort in.

Balliet also commended the students for their altruistic accomplishments, like the numerous seniors who volunteered their time in younger grade-level classrooms in EASD and the Mini-THON leadership team that led a campaign to help raise more than $85,000 for Four Diamonds. The audience also heard from Terry Seiders, president of the EASD Board of School Directors, and Maura Hobson, EAHS principal. Senior Maya Hollinger sang the national anthem, and EAHS Class of 2019 president Rachel Malari introduced featured student speaker Frank Miele. Valedictorian Ryan Minnich and salutatorian Adrienne Nolt presented speeches as well. Ryan, the son of Sherri Minnich, plans to attend the University of Pennsylvania to double major in computer science and philosophy. In his speech, he recalled some of his best memories at EAHS and expressed gratitude for the faculty, administration, friends, and family members who supported each of the students throughout their years in school. He encouraged his peers to see graduation as a launching point and to continue working hard in their next steps. “There is a common myth that those who achieve success or accomplish

One of Thy’s favorite educators during her time at MCCS was high school science and chemistry teacher Melissa Risser. “She’s very caring and cares about how we feel each day,” noted Thy. “And she would
