Cornerstone To Hold Virtual Fundraiser $30,000 Match In Place Through June 25 Due to the effects of COVID-19, Cornerstone Youth Center, 95 S. Wilson Ave., Elizabethtown, had originally planned to postpone its annual benefit banquet to Friday, June 19. However, the fundraiser will now be held as a virtual event instead. The guest speaker for the June 19 benefit, Auntie Anne Beiler, will instead come to the stage for next year’s event, set for Friday, March 26, 2021, to further share her story and ways one can overcome the personal pain and hardships of life. While Cornerstone has been closed since mid-March, executive director

Laurie Shepler and her team of volunteers have been reaching out to the youths who have known Cornerstone as their youth center. “With losses there have been gains, plans have been See Cornerstone pg 2

Sweet Pea Project, an organization that offers comfort and support to families that have experienced the death of a baby, has created a virtual flower garden that mothers and other family members may use to honor the child they lost. Although the virtual garden was created for Mother’s Day, it will be available into the future for those who would like to dedicate a flower to their child.

Cornerstone Youth Center in Elizabethtown is holding its annual benefit banquet as a virtual event. An online auction will be held from June 19 to 21. Also, a $30,000 match is in place through June 25.

In order to better accommodate its current group of rescued cows, sheep, goats, pigs and other farmed animals, as well as to provide space for even more animals in need, the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary recently relocated to a larger facility. The nonprofit sanctuary, founded in the summer of 2017 by Sarah Salluzzo and Jonina Turzi, was previously located at 558 Milton Grove Road South in Elizabethtown. The sanctuary’s new address is 1871 Milton Grove Road, Mount Joy. Although the new location is only

2 miles away from the previous farm, the new property has much more pasture space. “The previous farm was about 5 acres but only 3 was habitable, because there was a creek and wetlands,” explained board member Sara Petrosky. “The new farm is almost 18 acres, and almost all of it is pasture.” The biggest benefit of the new location is that the sanctuary will not have to turn down as many requests by area police, humane workers and others who are seeking help for farmed animals in life-or-death situations. “We have people asking almost daily, ‘Can you take in this animal?’ A lot of times the requests are by the police. Day, which was held on May 10. A special part of the picnic is a chance to visit an area inside Dutch Wonderland that has been designated as a permanent Sweet Pea Project Remembrance Garden. “It has a big tree and hundreds of flowers, and our logo and sign is there,” said Cole, who noted that she is continually amazed at how the siblings flock to the garden during the picnic. “There’s pizza, ice cream, and roller coasters, and these (siblings) stop in the middle of this super fun day to plant a flower,” she said. “It has been the most meaningful part of our picnic.” To give bereaved mothers and their families an opportunity to join together in a similar and safe way, Sweet Pea created a virtual flower garden. “I thought we should try to create a sense of community and salvage that flower piece,” said Cole, who noted that families do not forget the feeling of losing a child. She added that because of the quarantine, the spring of 2020 may have been even more difficult for those who lost a child. “Parents who (have lost a child) are already feeling isolated, and then they come to Mother’s Day,” explained Cole. “The isolation was really piling up this year.” The virtual flower garden, which can be reached on Facebook or Instagram using the hashtags #stillamothergarden and #sweetpeaproject, acknowledges bereaved mothers and

MICK BULLER & SON ROOFING honors the children they love and miss. “ We are still their mothers. That deserves to be remembered and celebrated,” wrote Cole in an invitation to mothers to take part. Those who participated posted a photograph of a flower on Facebook or Instagram along with the child’s name and the hashtags. Those wishing to post flowers may continue to do so. Cole recalled the struggles she endured facing her first Mother’s Day after losing her daughter. “When you lose a child, you feel like you’re the only one who ever suffered through this,” she said. “(It can be beneficial to have) a place you can scroll through quietly without having to (leave your home), and yet know you are part of something … you’re not alone.” “It gives a sense of unity,” Cole continued. “Even though we didn’t join together and put the flowers in the ground the way we usually do, it’s pretty nice to have some beautiful pictures to look at online.” Cole said she is looking forward to scheduling more Sweet Pea events in the fall, but in the meantime, she is glad the virtual flower garden is available for bereaved family members, especially as Father’s Day approaches. Readers who would like to learn more about Sweet Pea Project may visit www.sweet peaproject.org.

Yoga and tours of the Lancaster Farm Sanctuary will resume at the site’s new location in Mount Joy when Lancaster County moves into the green phase. The programs are currently being offered virtually on the site’s Facebook page. also get calls from good Samaritans or neighbors,” Petrosky noted. “(The new location) will enable us to take in a lot more animals so we don’t have to say no so often.” She noted that when an animal first comes to the farm, it is examined by a veterinarian before it is allowed to have contact with the other animals. Animals that cannot be accommodated are referred to partnering sanctuary organizations. One of the site’s newest resident is Orville, a small lamb, who suffers from a bone infection and is currently on medication. “He couldn’t keep up with the other lambs, and someone brought him to the farm,” Petrosky explained. “ We do the ‘Great Orville Watch’ where volunteers sit with him in two-hour segments.” Other residents of the farm include two pigs, Willa and Charlotte, who were found by humane police officers locked in a small shed; two dairy cows named Bess and Truehart; and even a chicken that fell off a truck and was left abandoned. “We have about 50 animals now, including chickens, goats, cows, sheep and ducks, two turkeys and different kinds of pigs,” Petrosky stated. “We know their names and their personalities; they are just like kids.” Volunteers work at the farm in shifts to take care of the animals, which includes feeding them and performing maintenance and cleaning chores. Volunteers also spend time building relationships with the animals since the sanctuary is the animals’ forever

home. “We are not like other rescues where they are looking for homes for the animals,” Petrosky pointed out. “In our case, they all come to live here for the rest of their lives.” The sanctuary is an all-volunteer organization, and it relies on community donations to pay for veterinarians’ services, food for the animals, bedding and ongoing care. Additionally, the sanctuary recently launched a capital campaign to finance the construction of a new barn and fencing at the site, which will cost approximately $120,000. Prior to the coronavirus pandemic, tours of the site were offered every Saturday from May through October. “Since the isolation started in mid-March, we have been doing virtual tours that have been widely viewed,” Petrosky said. “We also have bedtime stories with the animals on Thursday and Sunday nights at 7:30 p.m., where we read children’s books to our baby goats and sheep.” The farm also offered a yoga program that included a onehour class followed by a 30minute walking tour of the sanctuary. This program is also currently being offered virtually. To view the offerings, readers may visit www.facebook.com/ lancasterfarmsanctuary and choose Videos. It is projected that the tours and yoga will resume when the Lancaster County goes to the green status. College Makes Donation Elizabethtown College exceeded its goal in its Make A Deposit, Make A Difference campaign by raising $5,000. The college matched these funds and announced it would double its match, totaling $10,000, to support local nonprofits affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. As a result of the campaign, Elizabethtown College will provide $5,000 to both the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s Elizabethtown Bear Bags Program and the Elizabethtown Ministerium. The donations will help to provide area families with food supplies and resources. In an effort to provide monetary donations, the college launched the Make a Deposit, Make a Difference campaign announcing it would match 100% of all deposits made by

students between April 4 and 10. During the college’s first-ever virtual Accepted Student Day event on April 4, the college met and surpassed its goal. The additional $5,000 in the match for the campaign was added in recognition of all the incoming students who committed prior to the campaign going live on April 4 and who were inspired after the launch announcement. Kutztown University (KU), Kutztown, announced the winners of the 2020 Chambliss Student Academic Achievement Awards, including Mackenzie Fuhrman of Elizabethtown. The awards recognize the exceptional individual achievements of KU seniors. The Academic Achievement Awards were established in 2004 through a donation provided by Dr. Carlson Chambliss, KU professor of astronomy from 1970 to 2003. Certificates and specially designed coin medallions of gold, silver and copper are presented to the students. The awards ceremony has been postponed to a later date. Winners were selected from students nominated by staff and faculty members for meeting one or more of the following six areas of achievement: successfully completed research projects, high-quality original artwork, high-quality artistic performances, original writing in literature or meritorious writing in other fields, noteworthy achievements in athletics, and outstanding service to the KU community. Fuhrman will be awarded the Chambliss Academic Achievement Award Gold Medal in the category of noteworthy achievement in athletics. Fuhrman was scheduled to

graduate in May with a Bachelor of Fine Arts degree in communication design. A four-year member of the KU field hockey team, Fuhrman was a threetime All-America First Team selection as a midfielder, placing her among the best players in Division II. She is a threetime All-Pennsylvania State Athletic Conference (PSAC) First Team player and was named a PSAC Fall Top 10 Award winner, the first Golden Bear fall athlete to earn a spot on the list since 2008. The PSAC Top 10 Award recognizes student-athletes who distinguish themselves in the classroom as well as in the arena of competition. This spring, Fuhrman was named KU’s 2019-20 Female Senior Athlete of the Year. She was the catalyst of the Golden Bears reaching the NCAA Division II national semifinals. She scored the game-winning overtime goal that sent KU to the PSAC Championship game for the first time since 1988. Off the field, Fuhrman holds a 3.94 grade point average, making her a multi-year member of the dean’s list and the PSAC scholar-athlete list. She has also been named to the NFHCA National Academic Squad and has been honored as an NFHCA Scholar of Distinction.

Character juggler Chris Ivey will present a one-time free livestream juggling show on Sunday, June 14, at 2 p.m. The performance, “Live in the Shadows, STREAM in the Light,” will feature special guest Lucien Ivey.

Ivey has been performing a traveling theatrical juggling show based in Lancaster County for the past 25 years. To view the livestreamed show, readers may visit www.facebook.com/juggler chrisivey.

The Safe Boating Campaign offers the following safety tips for boating and social distancing: -Boaters should follow state and local guidance for outdoor recreation. -They should share a float plan with a family member or friend.
