Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) celebrated the 309 members of the Class of 2020 with its first-ever virtual commencement program on June 2. Airing on the school district’s website, the program afforded district administration an opportunity to recognize the accomplishments and perseverance of this year’s graduating class. Filmed over three days in mid-May, the virtual celebration included remarks from school board president Terry Seiders, superintendent of schools Michele Balliet, high school principal Maura Hobson, co-valedictorians Abigail Dehmey and Sierra Miller, and salutatorian Ethan Lown. It also included the singing of the national anthem by Claire Fritz and the customary awarding of diplomas to each of the graduates as they walked across the stage clad in their blue robes.

Balliet greeted the virtual audience and acknowledged the difficult circumstances the last several months of the school year presented. “The grace and dignity that you displayed during these final months of your high school career have been noticed,” Balliet said. “I have seen so many examples of our students rising to meet current obstacles headon, developing realistic solutions to connect and serve others and their families.” Balliet concluded by challenging the Class of 2020 to embrace change. “As you continue on your life’s journey, I hope you will continue to grow, adapt, and embrace a willingness to continually learn,” Balliet said. “In the coming weeks, months, and years, there are things that will need to be reimagined (and) rebuilt even better - and possibly even stronger - when this See EAHS pg 3

When COBYS Family Services held its 40th anniversary banquet celebration at Middle Creek Church of the Brethren on March 12, most of the presentations were made by video. “We didn’t do that because of COVID-19,” said Anne Stokes, director of

development for COBYS, who was the program’s master of ceremonies with executive director Mark Cunningham. “It was just an easier way to do them.” One of the video appearances was made by Glen Faus of Manheim, who served as director of COBYS from 1980 to 2001. Working To Grant Wishes Virtual Convoy Scheduled For Aug. 16 By Ann Mead Ash

In April, COVID-19 restrictions put Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley, an organization that grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases, in a precarious position. Concern for the children served by Make-A-Wish, who fall into high-risk categories, was of the utmost importance. Wishes were postponed, and the popular Mother’s Day Convoy, which was ready to make a move to the Manheim Auto Auction, was postponed. The convoy is now scheduled as a virtual event to be held on Sunday, Aug. 16. In the meantime, Make-A-Wish needed to raise funds, preparing to grant more than 450 local wishes when See Make-A-Wish pg 2

Make-A-Wish of Philadelphia, Delaware and Susquehanna Valley grants the wishes of children with life-threatening diseases. While COVID-19 restrictions have made that mission difficult, the organization recently held a giving week that raised nearly $100,000 toward making that goal easier.

pandemic is truly over. And you, our seniors, may just be the very ones who make this all happen. Seiders followed Balliet and encouraged the seniors to embrace the next chapter of their lives that will include fear, uncertainty, and many new experiences that can create anxiety. “Once we give careful consideration to the choices we make and understand the risks, we are able to carefully consider how we go about dealing with them and moving forward and facing the opportunities. Only then will we have a chance to grow, Seiders remarked. Hobson encouraged the graduates to remain grateful and find the good in each day. “This is your life, right now, and there is no playbook for how to best live it, she said. “I hope you do your best to take each day as it comes. In moments of resentment toward things you can’t change, I hope you choose to be grateful for the little things instead. After receiving their academic distinctions, Abigail, Sierra, and Ethan spoke to their classmates. Sierra, who plans to major in accounting at Shippensburg University and earn a Master of Business Administration, challenged her classmates to find their purpose in life and watch how it can affect the lives of others. “Every single one of us is special and has a purpose in life. It may just take time to find, or we may need others to help us to recognize it, she said. “One of the ways to find this purpose is to follow your heart. If you have a passion, turn it into a career and watch how it can affect the lives of so many others. Abigail’s remarks celebrated the many memories of the graduates’ years in the school district. “We may have had some ‘lasts’ that came too soon - like our last practice, our last performance, our last lunch in the cafeteria with friends, and our last time being closer than six feet apart; however, we had a lot of firsts and other memorable experiences, she stated. “We were the first class to graduate from Bear Creek. We won’t ever forget our first day of high school, our first football game, and our first prom. Abigail plans to earn a teaching degree from Penn State University.

Ethan reminded his classmates that they are and always will be Elizabethtown Area High School’s Class of 2020. “Soon, we will move on to a new chapter in our lives. I challenge each of you to embody hope,” he exhorted. “The pandemic isn’t the first challenge we have faced, and it surely won’t be our last. Our greatest influence is our relationships. We are remembered by the people we impact, and we must be greater than what we experience.” Ethan was accepted into a constitutional program at Waynesburg University and intends to pursue a career in criminal justice. Officers for the Class of 2020 were Adam Evans, president; Kristen McEvoy, vice president; Rachel Handshew, treasurer; and Alicia Underkoffler and Ethan Lown, historians.

As businesses seek to recover from the COVID-19 pandemic, several resources are available to them. The U.S. Chamber has unveiled its Reopening Business Digital Resources Center to equip America’s business community with the latest state guidelines, sector-specific guidance, small business advice, and other tools and resources as businesses look to reopen safely and keep employees and customers healthy and informed. The resources center also includes a customizable workplace flyer to help businesses communicate the steps they are taking to keep people safe and prevent the spread of COVID-19 to employees and customers. To learn more, readers may visit www.uschamber.com/ reopening-business. Locally, the Lancaster Chamber and the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County collaborated to create a $33.4 million Lancaster County Economic Recovery Plan approved by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. A resource to support Lancaster County-based businesses has been developed and may be visited at www.recoverylancaster.com. The website is a resource to provide pathways to emergency funding, free personal protective equipment (PPE), pandemic-related educational information, and advice. The goal is to help businesses operate safely and to fuel resolve to chart a new course forward. The site will be the main access point to both the $25 million Small Business Recovery & Sustainability Fund and $6 million in free PPE, the two key programs in phase one of the Economic Recovery Plan. Glen Faus, who served as director of COBYS for more than 20 years, was honored at the event. for foster children and how we do therapy,” she said. The number of therapists serving COBYS clients has tripled since 2011. “It is best practice to offer trauma training,” she added. Another change has been the types of parenting classes the organization holds. “One-on-one interaction and care in a loving home has not changed, (though),” she said. According to Stokes, the dedication of the in-office staff at COBYS has remained constant as well. “There’s also a lot about the way we deliver care that hasn’t changed,” she said. “We started as a small agency with a small staff,” Stokes recalled. “We have always been focused on the one child in front of (each caseworker) … the one case … that one family and how (staff members) provide focused care for each of (those cases).” Stokes said that this focus has remained the same even though the number of families COBYS serves has grown. “We have maintained with all of our workers (the goal to always) provide that quality of care,” she said. Cunningham summed up the service COBYS has provided for four decades, saying, “For 40 years, our mission and guidance by Christian faith remains the same, but has been strengthened. Our level of care is the same, but renewed through deeper understanding and resources.” Readers who would like to know more about COBYS may visit www.cobys.org.

were Dennis and Ann Saylor of Manheim, who, as resource parents for COBYS, have provided foster care for 116 children over more than three decades. Stokes noted that the large gathering included close to 600 meals at two separate seatings. “We do a meal at noon and the same thing in the evening,” said Stokes. COBYS was founded in 1980 by the Atlantic Northeast District of the Church of the Brethren, with one caseworker and one executive director placing teenagers in foster homes. In its 40-year history, the organization has served more than 60,000 people in a variety of settings. Recalling that in the past COBYS provided congregant care, Stokes stated that the organization once owned a house on the grounds of Pleasant View Retirement Community in Manheim. Most recently, the building, which has been razed, was used as a home for teen mothers and their children. “As the model of best practices changed over time, so did we,” said Stokes. “There was an evolution of types of clients we could handle.” Currently, COBYS provides foster care through two units. “One is the permanency unit, which is a direct contract with Lancaster County Children and Youth Services,” said Stokes. “(That group) functions as an extension of the county caseworkers.” The permanency unit has a capacity of 80 to 100 children in care depending on the number of families available. “We also have COBYS foster care resource parents that we train,” said Stokes, who noted that about 80 to 100 children may be placed with those families. Stokes explained that about 100 families are approved, but all those families may not be available to take children due to specifications in the number of children they can accept and their ages. “We are full most of the time, so we are always approving new resource parents,” Stokes added. Stokes noted that while many things remain the same about the care provided to children, there have also been many changes. “We (better) understand the role trauma plays in life and how you care

Align Life Ministries (formerly Susquehanna Valley Pregnancy Services) concluded its 34th annual Walk Run for Life on May 9. More than 200 registered individuals participated in the virtual event and either walked, ran a 5K, or did another form of fun activity to support the event. So far, more than $235,000 has been raised toward the $255,000 goal, and donations and pledges are still being processed. These funds help the ministry provide immediate life-sustaining services to families in need. The organization recently delivered essential baby supplies to a young mother of an infant, and then she enrolled in virtual parenting classes with her client advocate. Next year’s Walk Run for Life will take place on Saturday, May 8, 2021, at The Junction Center in Manheim. Readers may visit www.facebook.com/alignlifeministries to view event photos and www.youtube.com/watch?v=N9 rabr-vHCI&t=9s to view the closing video.
