the 2019 Honorary Survivor at the 26th annual Relay For Life of Lancaster County at Conestoga Valley High School. “I will forever be in debt to all the people who surrounded me in my weakest moments with prayers, meals, cards of encouragement, visits, and phone calls,” said Metzler to the audience gathered around the track at the school. “(Relay For Life) is a special time to honor those who have lost their fight with cancer and support those who are fighting cancer today.” Relay For Life of Lancaster County kicked off on the evening of June 7, with 112 teams and more than 1,000 total participants taking turns walking around the track overnight until a closing ceremony at 11:30 a.m. on June 8. This year’s event raised more than $672,462 for the American Cancer Society. Organizer Stephanie Delp noted
will be participating in the national Amateur Radio Field Day exercise on Saturday, June 22, from 2 to 7 p.m. and Sunday, June 23, from 10 a.m. to noon at 1715 Breneman Road, Manheim. This event is open to the public free of charge. For more than 100 years, amateur radio (sometimes called ham radio) has allowed people from all walks of life to experiment with electronics and communications techniques, as well as provide a free public service to their communities during a disaster, all without needing a cellphone or the internet. Field Day will demonstrate ham radio’s ability to work reliably under any conditions from almost any location and create an independent communications network. For more information about Field Day, readers may visit https://K3IR.org or www.arrl.org/ what-is-ham-radio.
New Holland police officer Wendell Metzler and his family had participated in the Relay For Life of Lancaster County for many years in support of a close friend who was fighting cancer. Then, in the summer of 2018 on a family vacation to Virginia Beach, Metzler had to be taken into the emergency room due to excruciating pain and the sudden inability to walk. He was diagnosed with stage 4 melanoma. “As a public servant, I had always taken great pride in helping others,” shared Metzler. “Through my times as a volunteer firefighter, EMT, and police officer, I never had to rely on others for help ... but God humbled me.” Metzler shared about his experience in celebration of one year of survivorship during the opening ceremony as

Marietta Motors To Host New Ownership Celebration July will mark the one-year anniversary of a change in ownership at Marietta Motors, 1407 River Road, Marietta. Of the founding owners, Ken Breneman still remains, but his son Jason Breneman is his new partner and the president of the company. However, Jason is not new to the business, as he has worked as a technician at Marietta Motors for more than 15 years. Marietta Motors was founded in 1991 by Ken Breneman and Elvin Heisey and has served Marietta and the surrounding communities with professional automotive service and repair ever since. The business began as a two-bay garage and was expanded to four bays by 1993. Marietta Motors then purchased Shenberger’s Towing in 2001. What began as a one-truck operation has since grown into a five-truck fleet offering towing services 24/7. The service center is open from Mondays to Fridays from 6 a.m. to 5 p.m. Jason is excited to keep the business in the family and to continue building on the foundation that has been built over the last 28 years. He believes small business allows for a personal connection with his customers, and he knows many of them by name. In the years to come, Jason hopes that his own sons become involved in the business in some way as well. To celebrate the anniversary of the change in ownership, Marietta Motors will host an event on its property for the public from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Saturday, June 22. There will be free food, giveaways, and drawings. The community is invited to attend to meet Jason and his family and to check out the trucks and equipment at Marietta Motors.

Service Dogs from pg 1 all of the initial training is carried out in state correctional institutions. From age 10 weeks to 12 months, the puppies live with one inmate around the clock, learning up to 50 commands. “(It’s a) win/win/win,” puppy sponsor and program instructor Mary Jalongo wrote in a letter read aloud at the ceremony. “The dogs win because they are treated like best friends and family. The inmates/trainers win because they acquire new skills and make an important contribution to the community. The clients win because they get a fourlegged support system, on call 24/7 and eager to assist.” When a puppy reaches a year old, it goes to live with a volunteer puppy raiser, who takes it to weekly training classes and provides socialization opportunities. At 18 months old, the dog then moves on to a secondary trainer, who fine-tunes the dog’s existing knowledge and teaches it specialized skills and commands. At that point, the dog is ready to be paired with a UDS client. Before the transition, however, the client goes through

two weeks of training so he or she can care for the dog and utilize all the services the animal can provide. After a year together, the team is re-evaluated to ensure that everything is going well. Of course, the UDS Service Dogs staff members are available at any time to give advice or extra training as needed. One of the first dogs to be honored at the ceremony was a chocolate Labrador named Rader, whose name was chosen by his sponsor, the Porsche Club of America. “Rader” is the German word for “wheels.” “Rader is Dylan’s wheels,” said Jamie Gordon, the mother of UDS client Dylan Gordon, who has autism. “He’s a pal, and he keeps Dylan going. He’s changed our lives.” Labradoodles Wrangler and Duncan and black Lab Gideon are also facility dogs. Wrangler was owner-trained by Danielle Rogers for Manor Middle School, and he supports more than 2,000 students a year, sitting with them in the nurse’s office or providing comfort when they cry. Gideon loves to give kisses to students in the Mechanicsburg School
District, and both students and staff members have been positively impacted by his presence. The same can be said of Duncan. The teachers who trained Rory, a black Lab, noted that he is part of a pack of eight service dogs in the Northern York County School District. “Our students and staff have found her to be a source of comfort and inspiration, as she seems to know just how to approach someone who is struggling,” they wrote in the graduation program. “Shelly Thomas, our director of special services, calls this ‘the power of dog.’” UDS Service Dogs program coordinator Kristy Smith expressed her gratitude for Thomas, saying, “Without her, we wouldn’t have our service dog program in schools.” UDSF director of development Larry Aubrey closed the ceremony by encouraging attendees to spread the word about UDS Service Dogs. “This program changes lives,” he commented. “It’s entirely supported by the community.” For more information about UDS Service Dogs or to contribute to the program, readers may visit www.ud services.org or call program manager Lori Breece at 717-715-8753.

This year, the league consists of 13 teams with more than 250 players age 60 years of age and up. that the Lancaster event is the second-largest in the nation in terms of total funds raised. Delp said that she always looks forward to the opening ceremony, which includes a survivor lap. Cancer survivors - whether diagnosed a few days or a dozen or more years ago - are invited to take a lap around the track as the crowd cheers them on. A Caregiver Lap held later in the evening honors those individuals who have stood by their loved ones on their journeys with cancer. The 2019 Honorary Caregiver was Cheyanne Leid of New Holland. At the recent Relay, luminarias emblazoned with the names of people who have died of cancer surrounded the track, and a special luminaria ceremony took place at dusk to remember those lives touched by cancer. Dr. David Cziperle, a thoracic surgeon with the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute, spoke to the audience before the luminarias were lit and the names of those being honored were read. “It’s very moving,” described Delp. “Really the best way to say it is that Relay For Life is not an event; it’s an experience.”
Plenty of fun activities were peppered into the mix to spur walkers on as they persevered through the night, including a movie on a big screen, games and relays, frozen T-shirt and Twister competitions, yoga and Zumba, children’s entertainment, trivia, crafts, and themed laps like Ready for Beddie and Here Comes the Sun. Music was blasting for the duration of the event, with live performances by Matt Wheeler, Mandy Salimbeni, Dreadnought Brigade, Peggy Kurtz Keller, Black Cat Band, and Leo DiSanto of Vinegar Creek Constituency. Many Relay teams are made up of cancer survivors or individuals who have family and friends who are survivors or who have lost their battle with the disease. Others, like Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute oncology nurse Julie Justice, know innumerable people
will be provided. The event is free, but registration is required by contacting Lexi at 717492-4596 or lexi.dsaa@gmail.com. Funding support for this project is provided in part by the Lancaster County Drug and Alcohol Commission.
Prizes will be awarded to teams that raise the most funds, show the most spirit, and have the most members. According to Gavin Robertson, Chocolate Tour event director, organizers hope to raise $130,000 this year. For more information and to register, readers may visit www.thechocolate tour.com. Cyclists who sign up by Sunday, July 7, will be guaranteed a commemorative T-shirt. Registration and packet pickup will run from 6:30 to 8:45 a.m. Attendees should plan to register a minimum of one hour prior to their event. affected by cancer. This was the eighth year that Justice participated in the Relay For Life. She served as team captain for the 52member Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health team, which raised more than $22,735. “It’s very rewarding to see our patients that are survivors at the walk and to be able to celebrate their journey with them,” Justice said. “Cancer patients are a very special population. They’ve got resilience.” Relay For Life got its start in 1985 when Dr. Gordy Klatt walked and ran for 24 hours around a track in Tacoma, Wash., to raise money for the American Cancer Society. He raised $27,000, and the following year 19 teams took part in a similarly styled fundraising event and raised $33,000. flair. Local bands and musicians will also be performing on stage before and after Ivey’s show. Morning traffic anchor and reporter Corinne Lillis will serve as master of ceremonies for the evening. Food will be available to purchase from area food trucks and novelty vendors throughout the day. Trained pyrotechnician and Marietta native Gary Schatz said that this year’s fireworks display is going to be even more fantastic than last year’s. He estimated that the show will last approximately 45 minutes. “We have at least 40 people on our (fireworks) team, and we are completely volunteer,” said Schatz. The fireworks will feature a huge opening, a ground show, a memorial barrage, and a grand finale. The opening part of the show will be offered in honor of

In addition to the fireworks and bike race, plenty of entertainment will be offered in the Marietta War Memorial Park. A cornhole tournament will begin at 2 p.m., and trophies will be awarded to the top three teams. Registration will open at noon, and there is a set fee per person. A Kids Zone from 3Monkeys Inflatables will be open in the park from 4 to 9 p.m., featuring a bounce house, a “Wacky World” obstacle course, and a 65-foot obstacle and slide challenge. Wristbands may be purchased for a set rate for children to enjoy the inflatables throughout the evening. Mascot Smokey Bear will also visit the park. At 7 p.m., character juggler Chris Ivey will take the stage to showcase his unique blend of technical juggling and theatrical
Ben Thompson, a Marietta World War II and Korean War veteran who passed away in February 2019 at age 94. Thompson served his country in the United States Air Force from 1942 to 1972. Schatz was instrumental in bringing fireworks back to Marietta in 2018 after a two-year hiatus. He believes that the town’s first Independence Day fireworks display would have been around 1960 as part of a grassroots town gathering. In the 1970s, the former Marietta Jaycees organization took over planning the fireworks, as well as a popular two-day carnival that eventually grew to be a weeklong event. Later on, Schatz said, the fireworks were organized by an independent carnival committee before that dropped off. In 2014 and 2015, Pioneer Fire Company organized a carnival and fireworks. “Fireworks have always been a community thing in Marietta,” remarked Schatz. “There were some years it didn’t happen, but not many.” Donations to support the Marietta Fireworks are needed, and interested individuals may email mariettafireworks@ outlook.com to learn more about how to contribute. Readers may also visit www.facebook.com/mariettafireworks for more details.
