E-Dance Center recently held its 14th annual dance show at the Hershey Theatre. Hundreds of people have danced with E-Dance Center over the years. He said that the facility has completely changed over the past 14 years. “It has been transformed into one of the coolest-looking places in Elizabethtown by the way it is decorated with large murals on the walls and paintings painted by local artist Justin Lorenzen from Lorenzen Fine Art,” said Aldous. “The red brick building with black steel windows and reclaimed wood walls throughout feels fresh and timeless.” Aldous noted that the building now has three dance studios inside, which are used throughout the year to offer all types of dance and exercise classes. “We often have 75 classes going each week,” he said. E-Dance Center has provided dance and exercise classes for hundreds of people from age 3 through adults over the past 14 years.
The Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) spring musical production of “Seussical, The Musical” took home top honors at the 2019 Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards by winning Outstanding Musical. In addition, junior Carter Rutkowski won Outstanding Featured Performer in a Musical for his role as General Schmitz/Wickersham in “Seussical, The Musical.”
“We have students mostly from Elizabethtown, but also many students over the years would come from Mount Joy, Landisville, Hershey, Palmyra, Harrisburg, and York,” Aldous noted. E-Dance Center offers a large range of dance styles. Its teachers and staff lead classes in tap, clogging, jazz, ballet, pointe, Broadway tap, jazz funk, hip-hop, pop video, modern, lyrical, and musical theater, as well as fitness classes and technique classes. “We have outstanding programs for tiny dancers ages 3 to 6 as well, which are half-hour classes to get your child introduced to dance in a fun way that isn’t a long hour class,” Aldous said. Each spring, E-Dance Center puts on a big show at the Hershey Theatre. “We’re very grateful to have such an outstanding place to hold our annual shows each year. Our shows over the years are a big source of pride for our students and the community,” Aldous commented. “So much work
goes into them with the sets, lighting design, music edits, posters and images, and hours upon hours of dance rehearsal to prepare for many show numbers. So many people in this community do a lot of work and volunteering to make the annual show a huge success.” Aldous said that over the years, the center has received positive feedback from the community. “One thing that is always mentioned is how the studio has so many great students and parents,” he noted. “People are very friendly, and the studio is a big family. People create tons of memories there. I’ve had students that have danced with us for all of the last 14 years since we started.” Aldous added that dance is a great activity. “You create lifelong friends, you get great exercise, and it teaches kids discipline, responsibility, character, and social skills,” he stated. “Over the years, we’ve received countless thank you notes from parents that tell us how much their child has grown
because of dance and programs at E-Dance. People in the community also often thank us for being a big-city professional dance school in a small town and the great opportunities it provides local young people.” E-Dance Center also has offerings for adults. The studio offers adult classes in hiphop, pop video, tap, jazz, and clogging, as well as fitness classes. “We love our adult dancers,” Aldous stated. The next enrollment period for dance classes is taking place through the summer for the 2019-20 fall dance season that will start on Tuesday, Sept. 3. For more information, readers may visit www.e-dance center.com or contact info@e-dance center.com or 717-689-5295. E-Dance Center offers a referral program where students get $10 off their monthly tuition each month if they refer a new student who enrolls. Aldous said that the studio is looking forward to being part of the Elizabethtown community for years to come.
In addition to the Outstanding Musical and Featured Actor Awards, EAHS’ spring musical received recognition for Outstanding Dance Number in a Musical and Outstanding Student Orchestra in a Musical. Also, Ally Hampton won a Spirit of Theater Award in the Fall Play category for EAHS’ performance of “The Man Who Came to Dinner.” Abby Franz won a Spirit of Theater Award in the Spring Musical category for “Seussical, The Musical.” High schools in Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, and Perry counties were eligible to receive nominations. The Elizabethtown
Area School District was invited to participate due to its proximity to Hershey. Independent evaluators representing the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards attended each school’s production to gather the list of nominees. The awards focus solely on the performances of the young people, honoring their acting, singing, and dancing abilities. A Tony Awards-inspired ceremony is held annually in May at the Hershey Theatre. In addition to the winners for both fall plays and spring musicals being announced, the recent ceremony featured performances by the casts, crews, and orchestra members
from the local schools. Elizabethtown’s Adam Evans and Ryan Kruft performed solo acts from their roles in “Seussical, The Musical,” and Claire Fritz and Carter Rutkowski performed a scene from the fall play. The cast of “Seussical, The Musical” performed one of its award-winning dance numbers. Also nominated were Carter Rutkowski, Outstanding Lead Actor in a Play; Claire Fritz, Outstanding Lead Actress in a Play; Ryan Kruft, Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Play and Outstanding Lead Actor in a Musical; Emma Buettner, Outstanding Supporting See Apollo Awards pg 9

Strawberries from pg 1 Center. Ten youths ranging between ages 8 and 19 entered the best berries from their patches for adjudication. Well, some of them did. “Not all of them ended up with berries because of the weather,” explained Lori Little, 4-H Extension educator. Too much rain and several bouts of hail hampered the crops. The timing of the event also impacted the results. Project leader Ralph Ellenberger of Mount Joy noted that several growers had excellent crops the week before the roundup, but their plants had slowed production or quit producing altogether by June 5. “Some will be early, and others will be late,” he said pragmatically. “It’s a good learning experience for the kids,” said Michelle Anger of Maytown. Her daughters Gabby and Gracelynn are part of the Mount Joy Community 4-H Club and are raising strawberries. “There are a lot of life lessons: finances, hope, and disappointment,” Michelle added. Professional grower John Shenk evaluated the berries on flavor and looked for uniform size and color. “It’s nicer to have larger (berries), but it’s not necessary,” Shenk commented. “I think customers will come back for flavor.” The entrants were divided by experience. The berries exhibited by Amanda Ellenberger of Mount Joy netted her the grand champion ribbon in the older group, and Gabby received the same honor in the younger group. The reserve grand champions were Justin Zimmerman of Elizabethtown and Callison Miller of Manheim, respectively. All of the strawberries were auctioned off to Rotary members. The Keller family has run the auction for 54 years and twice sold a quart of berries for $600. Amanda’s berries nearly reached that amount, selling for $550. Gabby’s berries sold for the second-
highest amount: $225. As the proceeds from the auction went back to each exhibitor, the growers who had no berries to enter were given strawberry pies to sell. Several of the pies were accompanied by gift certificates for dinner that evening at The Loft. Additionally, the proceeds of two pies went to the Max Smith Scholarship Fund, and the Rotary club presented a $750 check to Little for the fund. Bad weather aside, both Shenk and Ralph noted that the number of entrants has declined in recent years. Shenk entered the roundup as a child, and he recalls competing against at least two dozen other young people. “Fewer kids live on farms,” Ralph pointed out. “They have less space for a garden. It’s a challenge to get the quantity of strawberries (needed for the roundup).” The roundup provides growers with the opportunity to have their fresh berries evaluated. When all of the community clubs come together for the showcase in August, the growers will submit other strawberry-related projects. First-year members, who have spent the spring and summer weeding and mulching their plants in preparation for a crop the following year, will enter posters. The older members can make things like recipe or trivia cards or enter carefully tended potted plants. While giving his reasons for ranking the berries, Shenk gave some tips about raising strawberries. “Usually the first harvest is the best, but you can keep them for three years if they’re managed well,” he said. After the harvest is over, the plants should be mowed and the rows narrowed so there is room for the plants to grow back. “From Labor Day to the first hard freeze, the cells are deciding which will be berries and which will be leaves,” Shenk said. “It’s not too late (to plant now) for next year. Just make sure they have enough water to encourage them.” For more information about 4-H, readers may contact Little at 717-394-6851 or lmh12@psu.edu.
