LCCTC FFA Recognizes Member Achievements Members of the LCCTC FFA chapter were recognized in a virtual awards ceremony on May 26. All chapter members are part of the Animal Production Science & Technology Program at the Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC), 1730 Hans Herr Drive, Willow Street. The chapter members are high school seniors and were to receive Pennsylvania FFA Convention T-shirts as a graduation gift sponsored by the Lancaster County Agriculture Council. Throughout the school year, all students had an opportunity to job shadow, interact with guest speakers on a variety of topics, visit a variety of places related to animal science on curriculum field trips, and earn several industry certifications. Katie Brandsema, Manheim Township, was named the Outstanding Student for having the top grades in the program throughout the entire school year. Katie’s award included a monetary

Nothing will cost extra. It will all be included.” The school, which will initially accommodate 60 children ranging in age from six weeks to 5 years old, will embody a new perspecive on care. “Our family-focused approach to child care See New School pg 5

May was National Pet Month, and Mulberry Art Studios had put together an array of artists, vendors, treats for pets and their humans, rescue animals ready for adoption, and more to celebrate. Unfortunately, the second annual “We Love Our Pets” art show had to be pushed back and was rescheduled for July. July is here and Lancaster County recently moved into the green phase, but large gatherings are still not allowed to take place. While most of the studio’s spring and summer art offerings have been postponed to later in the year, owner April Koppenhaver and curator Stephanie Cole were determined to make the show still happen. These events included an information booth for Lancaster County Ag Week, horse rides for Barktoberfest, volunteer work with the Lancaster City Police Mounted Unit at the Horse World Expo, and attendance at FFA events such as Meet Your State Officer Night, LanCo LEADS Conference, and the Agricultural Cooperation Establishes Success (ACES) Conference. Aubrielle’s award was supplemented with a monetary donation by LCCTC FFA supporters Steve and Deb Berkoski.

Youth Conservation School Planned The Lancaster County Conservation District and the Federated Sportsmen of Lancaster will host the Lancaster County Youth Conservation School for students ages 14 to 16. Rather than canceling the field school due to COVID-19 concerns, organizers have opted to restructure the program and host a virtual experience instead. The school will run from 9 to 11 a.m. daily on Monday to Friday, July 20 to 24. By redesigning programming, organizers are securing opportunities to help keep students involved and motivated. The virtual programming expands the reach of their conservation messaging because of increased capacity, allowing more students to participate and also being available to those from outside Lancaster County or those who may have been hesitant to attend in person. Students who
attend the virtual experience in 2020 still have the option to apply to attend the traditional program in 2021. Youth participants may miss the in-person camaraderie and camping each night at the Northern Lancaster County Game and Fish Protective Association, but they will still have access to educational experiences through virtual field trips and live-streamed activities and instruction. There is no cost, but registration is required. Youth Conservation School kits containing printed materials and activities for the week will be mailed to each participant registering by Monday, July 6. revamps the traditional model,” said Goropoulos, who noted the goal will be not just preparing children for school, but helping get them ready for life by making health and wellness part of the curriculum. Special benefits at the school that will be offered to all students and families will include a family wellness coach and a family wellness caseworker. Carol Johnston, family wellness coach, will meet with every family that comes into the center. “(Johnston) will help families learn to work within the community and with one another,” said Goropoulos, who added that every family will have an assessment. “We will evaluate how the child is doing, what family dynamics look like, and areas of potential improvement, challenges they might be facing, and strategies (they could utilize),” said Goropoulos, who added that families will have access to these services as long as they are enrolled. If necessary, the family could be referred to a family wellness caseworker, who will act as a resource. The idea for a school grew out of the Healthy Columbia Project CHI engaged in more than two years ago. “We used to do small grant making to organizations that were working with children in addition to our dental program,” said Goropoulos, who noted that the board was looking for ways do more for children. “(They wanted) a strategy that would transform how communities were responding to health and developing health care habits,” he recalled. Healthy Columbia worked to identify areas common to healthy communities, including housing and neighborhoods, food access, early childhood education, and access to health and health care. “These are the four components to impact a community … to put that community in a better position to be healthy and thrive,” said Goropoulos. In response to what the board members learned, CHI decided to build a school. “It’s a seven- to 10year investment to build these structures and programs, and then they become supported by the community,” said Goropoulos, who noted that first discussion of

The project was approved in 2018, and the organization then purchased the building at 401 Locust St., along with the adjacent parking lot at 403 Locust. CHI broke ground for the school in May 2019. “We gutted the second and third floors of the existing building and added 10,000 square feet to both floors over the top of the parking lot,” said Goropoulos. COVID-19 restrictions halted construction in March. “We were a few weeks away from the building being finished when they shut down,” said Goropoulos, who noted that despite the shutdown, the school was due to be completed at the end of June and is now slated to open in early November. The organization is working hard to meet new guidelines while offering high value to participating families. “If we can support family functioning to reduce the possibility of adverse childhood experiences, the savings to the community and the positive health results to children will be astronomical,” said Goropoulos. Lancaster Osteopathic Health Foundation (LOHF) announced the first eight organizations to join the new LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative (LCSC) in response to the need for more child/youth mental health care professionals in Lancaster County. The initiative is funded for three years, in part by a grant from the Steinman Foundation. The collaborative will equip mental health professionals to take on supervisory roles and will provide a post-master’s clinical fellowship program for license-eligible providers to receive supervision required for licensing. The LCSC is slated to begin in July with its inaugural participants: Community Services Group, TEAMcare Behavioral
Health, Laurie Schein, Commonwealth Clinical Group, Thoughtful Wellness, Matters of the Heart Counseling, Diversity Works, and Focus Counseling Services. The LCSC believes that investing in the talent pipeline for behavioral health will result in stronger behavioral health organizations and competent supervisors who can mentor their staff. The LCSC adds that trained supervisors can effectively recruit and retain clinical staff, reducing patient caseloads, improving recruitment and retention, and lowering staff turnover rates. For more information on the LOHF Clinical Supervision Collaborative, readers may visit www.lohf.org/LCSC.

brown eyes shining brightly. He would then proceed to go to our office and begin snoring. Koppenhaver’s late husband, Charles E. Gaul II, enjoyed Milo’s company as well. “I often thought Milo was as much of a blessing to Charlie as Charlie was to Milo, Koppenhaver recalled. Milo died in November 2018, and less than two months later, Gaul passed away at age 93. Koppenhaver created the “We Love Our Pets art show in memory of Gaul and Milo. “Our pets and our partners make a profound difference in our lives, and we wanted to raise money for an organization dedicated to bringing pets and people together, Koppenhaver said. The Sebastian Foundation was founded in 2004 by Amy Garrety and facilitates the adoption of unwanted animals, offering a second chance to pets. The foundation is committed to compassion toward other living beings and aims to create a better world by educating the public about the welfare of animals. Ellen Stark, a volunteer for The Sebastian Foundation, commented, “We hope that by learning about us and how an individual can get involved, we will be able to welcome more volunteers into our group as well as potentially connecting one of our sweet dogs with their forever family. Stark noted that proceeds from the art show will help The Sebastian Foundation provide food, bedding, and veterinary care to animals that may have been neglected or abused. “We rely on the generosity of donors to give these guys a healthy and happy future, she said. For more information about the “ We Love Our Pets art show, readers may email Cole at stephanie. mulberryart@gmail.com.

Koppenhaver and Cole have created an online gallery show - a virtual exhibit that will showcase artwork and hopefully still raise funds for their animal rescue partner, The Sebastian Foundation. The virtual exhibit will be hosted at www.mulberryartstudios.com and will feature about 150 pieces of art featuring beloved furry friends from more than 80 local artists, half of whom are youths. A variety of media will be represented. The exhibit will go live on First Friday, July 3. Viewers will be able to vote for People’s Choice in both adult and youth categories. A Best of Show will be chosen by the studio. The exhibit and voting will be open through the end of July. The idea for “We Love Our Pets grew from the love of one dog, Milo. Milo was rescued when he was a few years old and adopted by Koppenhaver’s nephew. Eventually, the nephew could no longer care for Milo, so the beagle mix was invited to live at Mulberry Art Studios, where he became the organization’s unofficial mascot. “Milo was an absolute gem, Koppenhaver recalled. “He greeted all of our guests with his friendly warm tail wag or thump of the tail on the floor, his big

The Joint Commission and the National Quality Forum recently announced that WellSpan Health has won a 2019 John M. Eisenberg Patient Safety and Quality Award - one of the highest safety awards in health care - for its Sepsis Central Alert Team, an innovative program that works to quickly detect and treat sepsis, a life-threatening medical emergency. WellSpan reported that it is the first Pennsylvania health system to achieve the honor in 15 years. The Joint Commission is known as the nation’s oldest and largest standards-setting and accrediting body in health care, and the National Quality Forum sets national standards for health care performance measurement. The two organizations founded the Eisenberg Awards in 2002 to recognize the best examples of individual, local, and national efforts to improve patient safety and health care quality. The awards were to have been announced in March during the National Quality Forum Annual Conference in Washington, D.C.,
Now Safely Touring Independent Living Residences!
but the conference was canceled due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The last Pennsylvania health system to win an Eisenberg Award was the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center in 2004. Previous award winners have included well-known health care organizations across the country, including the Mayo Clinic, Memorial Hermann Health System in Texas, Kaiser Permanente, and Henry Ford Health System in Michigan. WellSpan Health received the Eisenberg Award in the category of Local Level Innovation in Patient Safety and Quality, which recognizes a project or initiative that focuses on making an impact at the local community, organization, or regional level. WellSpan’s Sepsis Central Alert Team program earned the award as an example of successful system changes or interventions that make care safer or advocate on a patient’s behalf. Begun in 2017, the Sepsis Central Alert Team is a group of registered nurses who have critical care and emergency medicine experience and who continuously monitor patients for signs of sepsis at five WellSpan hospitals from a remote location. The team is notified when WellSpan’s electronic health record system detects symptoms of sepsis in a patient’s vital signs,
including temperature and heart rate, and lab results. When notified of these markers, the Sepsis Central Alert Team directly contacts the patient’s physician or nurse, so they can determine if the patient may be septic or clinically unstable and can consider administering life-saving drugs, fluids, and other interventions. The team has saved an estimated 350 lives since its inception, as it dramatically shortened the time it takes WellSpan to respond to sepsis cases and speeded up the time that patients receive lifesaving medications. Early identification and screening times improved from 67 minutes to 12 minutes. As a result, the percentage of WellSpan patients who receive both timely and effective sepsis care is better than both state and national averages.
WellSpan reported that WellSpan York Hospital now boasts a sepsis survival rate in the top 1% of its peers nationally. The health system’s work in this area has attracted the attention of health care providers from across the country, with leaders sharing sepsis best practices with hospital and health system leaders from Massachusetts, Tennessee, Oklahoma, Wisconsin, Virginia, and other states. The Eisenberg Awards, given in three categories, bring together the quality community to recognize groundbreaking initiatives that are consistent with the aims of the National Quality Strategy: better care, healthy people and communities, and smarter spending. To learn more, readers may visit www.wellspan.org.

Checking In With Black Rock Retreat By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Like nearly every other organization, Black Rock Retreat (BRR), 1345 Kirkwood Pike, Quarryville, has been impacted by the shutdown due to COVID-19. While the impact on the Christian camping ministry’s finances is notable, the organization’s leaders used it as impetus to create new programs to meet its own needs and those of the community. “We have been working with several local food banks and churches to store and help order food as well as make some meals that have been distributed to local families. So far, we have supplied meals for almost 2,000 people in the Lancaster area,” BRR outdoor education director Jon Hill said on June 18. “We are also partnering with two local ministries to help provide temporary, transitional emergency housing for families who have been economically impacted by the pandemic.” BRR has also created Family Weekend Getaways, a program to give family members the opportunity to slow down, enjoy the beauty of God’s creation, and connect with each other. Dates are available every weekend in July. Check-in will be open from 4 to 9 p.m. on Fridays, and checkout will be 2 p.m. on Sundays. Lodging will primarily be available in cabins or the retreat center, with all options including private bathrooms. A limited number of tent campsites are available for those who want a more rustic experience. Additionally, meal packages will be offered to take the stress out of cooking. Hill noted that the menus will be planned by BRR’s chef and will include familyfriendly options. “We want this to be a relaxing weekend for families, and (we) have plenty of recreation areas available including basketball, volleyball, gaga court, (and) hiking trails, and the pool will be open from noon to 5 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday,” Hill said. “Due to the current guidelines, we are asking families to bring
their own sports equipment.” For safety, families are asked to reschedule their visit if anyone in their homes has a fever or other signs of sickness, and they must sign a waiver at check-in stating that they are healthy and will abide by physical distancing guidelines if they interact with other guests. Masks will be required in indoor public spaces or whenever physical distancing is not in use. BRR’s summer camp program will restart on Sunday, July 5, with both overnight and day camp programs. Guidelines recommended by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the Pennsylvania Department of Health will be in use. Hill noted that although campers will be getting picked up while families arrive for the getaways, there will be minimal interactions between the two groups. Additionally, the Family Weekend Getaways will not use the cabins that are used by summer camp guests. The getaways will take place rain or shine, and rescheduling due to weather will be handled on a case-by-case basis. “Rainy days can be part of the fun of camping,” Hill remarked. Two other programs BRR has rolled out include a matching gift challenge and a nine-month Christian gap year program. The gap year will be run through a partnership with OneLife Institute. Beginning in August, recent high school graduates will live at BRR for nine months and receive discipleship training, serve in different areas of camp, and earn college credits through Cairn University. The matching gift challenge was created by a BRR supporter, who pledged to match donations up to $100,000. More than $80,000 in contributions has already been received, but more will be welcome. Supporting BRR now will enable the ministry to continue for years to come, Hill suggested. For more information about BRR and its new programs, readers may visit www.brr.org or call 800-858-9299.
