Elizabethtown Team Wins High School Fishing World Finals By Chelsea Peifer

Elizabethtown friends Anthony Cicero IV, 18, and Dakota Snyder, 17, have both been fishing since they could walk and like to spend as much time as they can on the Susquehanna River and at area lakes catching fish. All of that time and practice paid off when they put their skills to the test at The Bass Federation (TBF) Student Angler Federation’s (SAF) 10th annual High School Fishing World Finals in Florence, Ala., and won first place. Cicero and Snyder were among 389 high school teams from across the country competing at Pickwick Lake. The competition began on June 19, and the field was cut to 31 teams for the

final day on June 22. Winners were determined by the heaviest final-day weight. The Elizabethtown duo caught three bass weighing in at a total of 16 pounds, 6 ounces, that led them to earn the prestigious title of 2019 High School Fishing World Finals champions. “It felt awesome, like we were on top of the world,” said Cicero. Cicero and Snyder edged out their closest competitors, second-place winners Griffin Phillips and Fletcher Phillips of Mount Olive, Ala., by 1 pound, 9 ounces. Every fishing squad consisted of two high school anglers and one adult boat captain. Snyder said that at first, with nearly 400 boats out on the water, the lake felt crowded. On the final day of See Fishing World Finals pg 6

On June 22, Elizabethtown residents Dakota Snyder (left) and Anthony Cicero IV won the 10th annual High School Fishing World Finals held in Florence, Ala., by catching three bass weighing in at a total of 16 pounds, 6 ounces.

same thing.” With the help of Juniper Village connections director Renee Lentz, Provost spread the word to other residents at Juniper Village about a new crochet group that would make projects with the purpose of donating them to individuals and organizations in need. The group chose the name Crochet4aCause and has been meeting on a monthly basis in the retirement community’s lounge for more than one year. Residents spend the afternoon together creating a variety of handcrafted items such as scarves, baby hats, and lap blankets that they like to say are made with love and prayers in every stitch. The materials are donated by Juniper Village and the Mount Joy community. This spring, Charlotte Atkins, 89, shared a YouTube tutorial that she had found for ribbon-stitched crosses with the group members, and they completed the project using plastic canvas, ribbon, flowers, and plenty of patience - just in time for the Easter holiday. When Provost was a young girl, a neighbor offered to pay her to crochet edges on Irish linen handkerchiefs that ladies from the Masonic Auxiliary were giving out. “I think she paid me 10 cents a piece, and it kept me busy all summer,

She also enjoys knitting, but trouble with her eyesight and manual dexterity in recent years has meant making more mistakes as she works - and fixing mistakes is easier with crocheting than knitting. Atkins got books and taught herself how to crochet when she was in her 20s so that she could make doilies. Now, she and Provost laugh at how popular

those crocheted doilies used to be. “We had doilies under everything,” Atkins said. “And back then all of your dressers had to have a crocheted (cover) on them,” added Provost. “I gave everything (I made) away, and I’m still giving it away now,” said Atkins, who also did a lot of sewing and cross-stitch work in the past. “I’ve done

(EAHS) this year and had been planning to work. With the significant scholarship options on the table, he is now considering attending one of the schools. Snyder, the son of Mark and Nicole Snyder of Elizabethtown, will be a senior at EAHS in the fall and is undecided on his post-graduation plans. In addition to the scholarship offers, the teammates each received a 50-inch television, a dozen fishing rods, and other fishing merchandise and clothing. There were so many prizes, in fact, that when it came time to pack everything up to return to Pennsylvania, Cicero said everything barely fit in the vehicle they had driven. Both Cicero and Snyder learned the sport of fishing from their fathers, who are also avid fishermen. Aside from spending as much time practicing as possible, Snyder advises younger fishermen to watch videos online for tips and techniques to improve their skills. “Stick to your gut, and just have fun. That’s the most important thing,” said Cicero. To view the complete results from the event, readers may visit https://high schoolfishing.org.

competition, they had a bit more space to navigate when the boats headed out at 5:30 a.m. Fishing commenced at 6 a.m., and the teams were allowed to continue fishing for bass until 1:15 p.m. Live bait and trolling - a method of leaving multiple baited lines in the water - were not permitted. From their prior days on the lake, the duo had determined a specific shallower spot - ranging from 8 inches to five feet to fish from for the final round. Both young men caught their personal all-time best: Snyder with a bass weighing in at 6 pounds, 5 ounces, and Cicero with a largemouth bass weighing 7 pounds 7 ounces that earned Big Bass honors for the day. “Working as a team really helped us,” noted Snyder. The prizes awarded to the champions included their choice of scholarship offers from Bethel University in McKenzie, Tenn.; Simpson University in Redding, Calif.; or Kentucky Christian University in Grayson, Ky., to fish on the college fishing team. Landis is a native Lancastrian and has been researching genealogy and history within Lancaster County for more than 40 years. He is a longtime member, active researcher, and volunteer at both the Lancaster County Historical Society (now LancasterHistory) and the Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society, where he serves on the Genealogy Committee, which plans the annual Lancaster Family History Conference. Since 1992, Landis has taught classes on a number of genealogical topics for both organizations, with Pennsylvania’s Colonial tax records being a special area of expertise. In recent years, Landis’ historical research has focused on the history of the Borough of Marietta. He has authored a number of articles and books on the history of the borough, given numerous lectures on local history, and documented the histories of nearly 300 historic homes in the area. To make reservations for the limitedseating Victorian Tea at the Haldeman Mansion, interested individuals may call event chairperson Elaine Jackson at 717426-3794 or 717-283-7740. The deadline to do so is Tuesday, July 16. There is a fee per person to attend the tea, with all proceeds benefiting the heating fund for the Haldeman Mansion. Jackson noted that once a heating system is installed in the historic building, the HMPS will be able to host events for the public year-round. The historic stone mansion, which was built in four stages and completed in 1811, was the birthplace of Samuel Haldeman, who became a prominent and respected scientist and scholar largely through self-study and made significant

contributions in the fields of zoology and linguistics, according to www.explorepahistory.org. Samuel was the eldest of nine siblings. His brother Horace served in the Mexican and Civil wars, and their younger brother Paris traveled west by wagon to the California Gold Rush. The HMPS Victorian Tea planning committee members are Jackson, Sandi Bush, Vada Clemens, Arielle Kerr, Lauren Kerr, Roslyn Hurley, and Ellen Rhoads. All of the food will be prepared and donated by HMPS special events committee members including Jackson, Bush, Hurley, Rhoads, Doris Sites, and Tina Mark.
