An Elegant Affair Haldeman Mansion To Host Victorian Tea By Chelsea Peifer

Organizer Elaine Jackson likes to describe the annual Victorian Tea at the Haldeman Mansion as an elegant affair. “It’s a really neat event,” praised Jackson. “Some people come from Lebanon and all over Lancaster, so it’s not just local.” The Victorian Tea will take place from 4 to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 14, at the Haldeman Mansion, 230 Locust Grove Road, Bainbridge. A high tea will be served on beautiful china in the

ballroom. The menu will include grape salad, chilled strawberry soup, ham and apricot sandwiches, cheese-nut sandwiches, chicken tarragon sandwiches, and scones with lemon curd, peach jam, and raspberry jam. All of the food will be prepared by members of the Haldeman Mansion Preservation Society (HMPS) and will be served with a variety of hot teas and iced mint tea. An assortment of homemade desserts will also be part of the meal, including Amish brownies, lemon bars, and cheesecake. Entertainment for the event will include live instrumental music. Moms’ Day Out To Focus On Hope Ride To Support Veteran Service Canines By Chelsea Peifer

By Ann Mead Ash

When Cristin Germaine planned the first Dare to Dream Single Moms’ Day Out in 2016, she was not sure how well the idea would be received. “When I started the journey, I didn’t know what to expect. I was just hoping to reach some single moms,” shared Germaine. That first year, 90 mothers took part, and in 2017, 125 women participated. “This year, within the first week of opening the registration, I had 70 single moms signed up, and now we’re at about 160,” said a delighted Germaine. “It’s fantastic how friends are bringing their friends.” The 2018 event has been planned for Saturday, July 21, at Calvary Church, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster, from 8 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The day will once again include praise and worship,

Readjusting to civilian life can be challenging at best, with unique hurdles to overcome, and Laughman said that service dogs help in numerous ways as veterans learn to establish a new normal in their lives. “Having a dog that is there to serve you 24/7 is huge,” said Laughman, noting that the loyalty of a dog can be healing. Laughman also said that while many combat veterans may tend to feel paranoid about their surroundings - particularly in

The Hershey Campus of Lancaster Mennonite (LM) School celebrated the commencement of the Class of 2018 at the Evangelical Free Church of Hershey on May 31. The class processional was led by junior marshals Brooklynne Beltz and Ruthanna Eckert. The seniors were joined by family, friends and faculty and staff as they celebrated their final day as seniors. Superintendent Pamela Tieszen opened the ceremony. Former Hershey Christian School history teacher Trevor Kase and former LM Bible teacher Brian Denlinger, along with current Hershey Campus English teacher Curry Snell, were guest speakers. Student speakers Morgan Furjanic, daughter of Martin

large crowds - service dogs can be trained to help ease some of that tension. For instance, the canines are taught to “Cover Your 6,” which means they will guard the area in the six o’clock position, or to the rear, of their handler’s viewpoint and warn the handler when someone is approaching. When it comes to anxiety disorders, Laughman said that service dogs are able to break the handler’s concentration and provide a distraction. Veteran Service Canines has a training facility in York where veterans who apply and are accepted into the program then go to meet and train their canine. Each dog receives basic training beforehand, but Laughman said from there the veteran works with a professional handler to train the dog according to whatever his or her personal needs may be. According to Laughman, an added bonus to this setup is that it provides the participating veterans with a welcomed sense of community. “You miss a lot of the camaraderie you had in the military when you get out,” Laughman reflected. “By combining guys in the same setting who are at different levels, they realize they’re not alone or singled out with whatever they’re going through.” The nonprofit organization works closely with the Lebanon and Coatesville VA medical centers and has connected 35 veter-

ans with service dogs since it began. Each recipient has been a veteran from the central Pennsylvania area, but Laughman said he receives inquiries from all over the country. On Saturday, Aug. 11, the community is invited to the third annual Veteran Service Canine Ride, an event where all proceeds will support the work of the volunteer-run nonprofit organization. The motorcycle ride is coordinated by members of the Marietta Legion Riders, Wrightsville Legion Riders, and AMVETS Riders Post 19. “To combine with multiple organizations and across counties like that is phenomenal,” Laughman stated. The ride will start at the American Legion, 19 S. Gay St., Marietta. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. Kickstands will go up at 1 p.m., and participants will weave through Lancaster County before crossing the Susquehanna River into York County to stop at several locations, including the Veteran Service Canines training facility, which was donated to the organization by a local business. The ride will conclude at the Kreutz Creek Valley Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) Post 7045, 341 Yorkana Road, York, for an event that will include a vehicle and motorcycle show, a live band, a pig roast, vendors, and more. For more information or to donate to Veteran Service Canines, readers may visit www.veteranservicecanines.com.

The new Math Club chapter at Lancaster Mennonite School’s Hershey Campus has received Gold Level status recognition in its inaugural year. The Hershey Campus started a National Math Club chapter last fall and registered for a MathCounts regional competition at Penn State Harrisburg. The Math Club practiced competition questions, learned new computation skills and explored higher-level extensions of mathematics like gaming theory, voting theory, fair division and fractal geometry. The club adviser, mathematics teacher Rachael Thomas, had a core group of six sixth-graders who came to all the meetings and competition practices, and from those six, she composed a competition team of four students for regional competition. The team competed against teams of older students. After the competition, the core group continued to work on enrichment projects and practice problems. Thomas submitted the

group’s work to MathCounts for Silver Level consideration, which the club received in April. After receiving Silver Level status, the group got started on a project to reach the Gold Level. The project involved composing a math game. The game the students created, “MathBands,” is similar to the game Headbanz. The game requires fluency with multiplication facts at a fourth-grade level. In addition to providing skill practice for multiplication facts, the game encourages critical thinking by forcing students to be efficient in their guesses and to make rapid conclusions based on limited information. When submitting the project for Gold Level status, the students included a written document outlining the game’s mathematical underpinnings as well as suggestions for making the game more challenging for older students. To refine their instructions, team members presented the game to students in grades

They were recognized by coach Rachael Thomas (right). four through six. MathCounts was founded by the National Society of Professional Engineers, National Council of Teachers of Mathematics and

CNA Foundation to give students the opportunity to engage in mathematics that is noncompetitive, fun and different from “textbook math.”

Beginning this autumn, students attending Reading Area Community College (RACC) can transfer academic credits directly to Elizabethtown College (E-town) via a dual admission agreement between the two institutions. The agreement was signed on May 22. Under the agreement, RACC students may apply for admission as early as their senior year of high school, but no later than the completion of 30 college-level credits in a transfer program offered through RACC. In accordance with the Elizabethtown College policy concerning transfer applicants, up to 64 credits of college course work will be accepted in transfer. A dual admission agreement with Elizabethtown College provides a growing population of recent high school students who have chosen RACC for their associate degree, with an accessible and clear pathway to their baccalaureate degree. The partnership also provides a seamless enrollment process, moving students from an associate degree program at RACC and giving them access to academic, career, and financial-aid advising at E-town. Dual admission students also will have access to resources through Elizabethtown College’s High Library and other on-campus facilities and events. The Office of Admissions will provide RACC students with regular updates concerning oncampus events and other academic programs. The partnership between RACC and E-town is a great opportunity for students to complete a bachelor’s degree in a wide variety of majors. These include health professions, engineering, computer and data science, finance, marketing, psychology, social work, and many others. Students accepted under the dual admission agreement also qualify to enroll in courses at E-town that are not offered at RACC but are required for completion of the Elizabethtown College bachelor’s degree. Tuition charges for up to two of these courses will be waived. Each institution will designate a representative who will coordinate the dual admission program between the two institutions. Students will be provided with financial aid information for both institutions. In the 2017-18 academic year, more than 20 percent of students enrolled at E-town were Pell Grant recipients, with more than

90 percent of all students receiving grants and scholarships from Elizabethtown College, totaling more than $39 million dollars. On average, the most recently admitted student group saw their total E-town grant and scholarships reduce their tuition expense by nearly 60 percent. Church Sets Sunday Evening Service

The day will open with praise and worship led by Liz Shoemaker. “There are two main sessions,” said Germaine, “one at the beginning and one at the end of the day.” This year, single mother Desovia Robinson, who led praise and worship at the 2016 event, will speak, as will Germaine. Women who attend will be able to select three of the seven workshops that will be offered. This year, the choices will include Co-parenting - The Challenge of Parenting Alone But Not Really; Bullying Teaching Our Kids to Stand Up for Themselves and Others; Establishing a New Reality; To Simplify Your Life, Elevate Your Style; Dashboard - Learning to Be You; Bible Study Boring or Greatest Adventure Ever?; and, a repeat from 2017, Disability - How It Impacts You and Positive Approaches to Moving Forward. “The (disability workshop) was one of the (most requested) last year,” said Germaine. “A huge (number) of single moms are dealing with children with disabilities.” The Diva Shop is a popular spot at the event. Attendees

receive Diva Dollars to use at the shop, which will feature a variety of gently used and new items including jewelry, scarves, purses, sunglasses, and flip-flops. Readers who wish to donate to the shop may do so at http://hope4singlemoms.us. This year, when Germaine speaks to the gathering, she plans to talk about the growth of the ministry. “I will speak about Lancaster Dare to Dream,” said Germaine, who noted that Dare to Dream groups have expanded from one church to three. “This year, I will focus on the ministries in the hope of getting moms plugged into those churches,” said Germaine, who noted that In the Light Ministries in Lancaster and Harvest Fellowship in Stevens are now both providing regular Dare to Dream meetings and support for area single mothers. “It was exciting to be able to open those,” said Germaine. Germaine said that she focuses on creating an event that will have a significant impact on those who attend. “I want it to be purposeful and meaningful,” she said. “As a single mom myself … my time is

valuable. It’s a break that a lot of (our participants) don’t (normally) have, and that’s why we provide t h e c h i l d c a r e .” H o w e v e r , Germaine made it clear that Single Moms’ Day Out is not just for mothers of young children. “This isn’t only for young single mothers raising their (children),” noted Germaine. “It’s for the older single moms whose (offspring) are grown. We’d love to include them as part of this event as well.” It takes about 150 volunteers to hold the annual Single Moms’ Day Out. Individuals who wish to volunteer may do so through the website mentioned previously. Germaine hopes to raise $20,000 to fund the 2018 event. A banquet held in May raised about $10,000, and donations have brought the fund to about $15,000. Those who would like to help fund the event may do so online at the website. Women who wish to take part in this year’s event may register through the website or by searching for “Lancaster Dare to Dream” at www.eventbrite.com. Those who would like to participate are asked to register by Sunday, July 8.

Elks Raise Funds To Aid Veterans Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 veterans service commission members (from second from left) Bernard Weisser, Bob Nikolaus, Mitch Heim and Sue Zeamer, along with Doug Sigman (far left) from American Legion Post 372, announced that the Elks raised $10,000 for Mission 22. The donation included funds contributed by Post 372. The Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074 has announced that it has raised $10,000 for Mission 22. The donation was the result of several fundraisers and donations from fellow fraternal organizations like the American Legion in Columbia, which contributed $2,000. The fundraiser was championed by the ColumbiaMiddletown 1074 Elks veterans

service commission and Sue Zeamer, a veterans service commission member and ambassador for Mission 22. Three veterans started Mission 22 because of their personal battles with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and traumatic brain injury (TBI). The organization provides information to veterans to help them heal

from the effects of war, to families to help them provide support to their loved ones, and to communities to guide them on how to fight for veterans. To learn more about Mission 22, readers may visit www.mission 22.com or contact the Elks by searching for “Columbia-Middletown Elks 1074” on Facebook or calling 717-684-6851.
