An Unforgettable Summer Fresh Air Fund Children Arrive In Lancaster By Chelsea Peifer
For many local residents, like the Horst family of Elizabethtown, hosting a child through the Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns program is a highly anticipated part of every summer. The Horsts have welcomed Lulu, an 11-year-old from New York City, into their home for a week or more each summer since 2014 and were eager to see her as she arrived at the Junction Center in Manheim on July 2 along with 34 other children and teenagers being hosted by Lancaster- and Lebanon-area families. “It’s great to have Lulu return again and again and develop a close relationship with her,” said Juanita Horst. See Fresh Air Fund pg 8
Thirty-five children and teenagers from New York City arrived by bus at the Junction Center in Manheim on July 2 as part of the Fresh Air Fund’s Friendly Towns Program and were greeted by excited host families from throughout the Lancaster and Lebanon area. Drop-offs occur at various locations several times each summer for one- or two-week stays. Host families are needed for next summer and may apply at www.freshair.org.

Meredith Willson’s “The Music Man” was the very first show produced by the Susquehanna Stage Company (SSC) in the summer of 2009. In honor of the theater company’s 10th season, it will be presenting the beloved musical once again. “It was a good show to start the company, and we’re repeating some of the famous things we did in the past,” noted director Jim Johnson. Eight cast members will repeat their roles from the first SSC production of “The Music Man,” including Mount Joy resident Sharon Boyer, who will portray Mrs. Paroo. “It was a lot easier to learn my lines. Remembering how I did it the last time is helping me now,” Sharon said. Playing Mrs. Paroo again is a welcome task for Sharon, who described her character as a fun and opinionated person. Mrs. Paroo’s daughter, Marian, will be played by Stacia Smith of Harrisburg. Marian, a librarian, is among the town members who do not quite believe the story that is told by smoothtalking con man Harold Hill when he arrives in tightknit River City, Iowa, and attempts to convince them he is a talented bandleader. He sets out to recruit folks to form a band only to pocket the cash he receives for instruments and uniforms. Harold Hill - the Music Man himself - will be portrayed by Nick Smith of Harrisburg. Harold’s problems escalate as he finds himself becoming attached to the townspeople and falling in love with bombshell Marian, and he must decide whether to skip town or tell the truth. Stacia, who is married to Nick in real life, said that she feels lucky to have the chance to play across from her husband in the production. Tackling the role of Harold has been fun for Nick, who said that his character’s tendency to be a big dreamer is easy to relate to, but the con man aspect, not so much. “We have a large cast filled with a lot of good talent, and it’s a really good community show, Nick shared. “It’s really special to
be a part of.â€? Sharon echoed those thoughts, noting that the music throughout the duration of the production will have audiences captivated. “It’s just one of the best all-American shows. All of the music is good, and the leads are spectacular,â€? commented Sharon. “The Music Manâ€? cast will also include Dale Boyer, Josh Kulp, Kevin Allen, Jim Herrick, Steve Sturgis, John Zimmerman, Tom Felgen, The cast of Susquehanna Stage Jason Spickler, Jered Macki- Company’s production of “The son, Paige Fairbanks, Hayden Music Manâ€? will include (from Bires, Linda Boozer, Charis left) Sharon Boyer as Mrs. Paroo, Alkinburgh, Emma Antonacci, Darlene Hein, Janet Nick Smith as Harold Hill, and Josephson, Ali Fleming, Lor- Stacia Smith as Marian Paroo. raine Ford, Ray Antonelli, Sandy 22; Thursday to Sunday, July 26 Shurina, Dave Anderson, Greta to 29; and Thursday to Sunday, Fairbanks, Al Hein, Barb Aug. 2 to 5, at SSC, located at the Nicholas, Rob Hein, Colleen rear of 264 W. Timmy Stehman, and Bubacz performed the double duet. Luke Hershey and Daniel Rivera took the stage for the duet. In addition, Stefanie Good, Luke Hershey, and Daniel Rivera were honored for continuing their music lessons through their senior year of high school.
The Fresh Air Fund is a notfor-profit agency that connects thousands of children from lowincome families in New York City with host families in rural, suburban, and small-town communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. Youths ages 7 to 18 stay free of charge for one or two weeks of fun and relaxation with a host family. Bus drop-offs occur several times throughout the summer in various locations. Juanita’s daughter, Larisa, said that having another girl in the house is one of her favorite parts of Lulu’s summer stays. In past years, the Horsts took Lulu along to visit a local amusement park in Hershey and Camp Hebron in Halifax to try new activities such as horseback riding and archery. At home, the family loves to spend as much time as possible outside, including evenings spent roasting marshmallows over the fire pit and setting up tents to camp out overnight. Exploring the family garden is another simple pleasure for Lulu, and last summer the Horsts sent corn back with her to New York so that she could share fresh corn on the cob with her own family. “It’s fun to see the kids’ excitement as they pick fresh tomatoes, peppers, and corn,” Juanita remarked. When it comes to being inside, art projects are a popular way to pass the time, whether working on airplane and car models or creating plush toys and hair accessories. Simply spending time together is what the Ross family of Palmyra most enjoys about hosting a Fresh Air Fund child. This summer, the family of six children - ranging from age 8 to 14 reunited with 14-year-old Shirley, who has been visiting through the Fresh Air Fund since she was 7. “She kind of fits right in, and it mixes things up a little bit,” said Doug Ross, noting that his children welcome the experience. “It’s a good experience for your children to be introduced to people of other cultures and regions.” The first year that Shirley visited, Doug said that they traveled
a lot, making trips to Delaware beaches and to see wild animals at Lake Tobias in Halifax and so forth. “We kind of killed ourselves entertaining her, but at the end of the time her favorite thing was just going to the community pool,” Doug recalled. Now they aim to make things special right at home, with things like cookouts and campfires. The Rosses have chickens, dogs, and cats - a switch from Shirley’s home in New York City with her grandma - and much like the Horsts, the Rosses like to maximize their time outdoors. Area readers who would like to
host a child next summer may contact the Lancaster County Fresh Air Fund representative Marcia Weaver at 717-951-8851 or fill out a form at www.fresh air.org to get started. Volunteer host families may request the preferred age and gender of their Fresh Air child. Children on firsttime visits are ages 7 to 12, and children reinvited by the same family may continue through age 18. According to www.fresh air.org, more than 1.8 million children from New York City have participated in the cultural exchange program since it began in 1877.

July,’” recalled Hayden. “That’s when it hit me how big the need was.” “This is a problem that flies under the radar. Hunger has a certain stigma to it,” said Hayden, noting that although it is a widespread issue, people oftentimes do not want to admit to struggling with it. Hardworking people often still face the choice of deciding between heat for their homes or food for their families, and Hayden believes that is something everyone can pitch in to help change. Hayden, Bobby D. Jones, and Todd Fuginetti formed FoodStock, a nonprofit organization, in 2011 as a way to combine their shared passion for music and helping others. Every summer, the organization hosts the FoodStock Music Festival as a way to raise funds for area organizations working to end hunger. This year’s event will take place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, July 28, in the Barn and Barrel Courtyard at the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim. The music festival will include performances by Steel Radiance, Corsair Blue Jazz Orchestra, Benjamin Vo Blues Band, solo guitarist Rob Reese, and Hydroponic Philharmonic. Headlining the event at 5 p.m. will be Vinyl Groov, a Harrisburg-based band that plays everything from Motown to modern hits. “They’re an event in and of themselves,” Hayden said. “We try to keep it fresh, so we have a really eclectic mix of performers this year.” Food and beverages will be available to purchase, and a variety of arts and craft vendors from throughout central Pennsylvania will have items for attendees to browse and buy. Giveaways and silent and Chinese auctions are planned as well, with items including autographed CDs, Beatles memorabilia, a black five-piece Pearl Roadshow complete drum set, original artwork, a wedding photography package, tickets to area attractions and restaurants, and more. To purchase tickets to the FoodStock Music Festival, interested individuals may visit www.foodstockpa.org. Admission for children age 12 and under is free. Proceeds from the 2018 event will primarily benefit Conestoga Valley Christian Community Services (CVCCS), as well as Water Street Mission and other local food banks and pantries.
“We have a main beneficiary every year, but then we break it down and choose other organizations, too,” Hayden explained. FoodStock always donates to the food bank in the town where the event is hosted, so the Manheim

To find the perfect song for this campaign that reflects the spirit and heart of the Lancaster community, CAP will host a
