JULY IS NATIONAL ANTI-BOREDOM MONTH!
Golfers Invited To “Drive For The Bears” By Dayna M. Reidenouer
The 20th annual “Drive for the Bears” golf outing to support the Elizabethtown Area High School football program will be held on Saturday, Aug. 8, at Par Line Golf Course, 4545 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown. Check-in will open at 7 a.m., and scramble-format play will begin at 8 a.m. with a shotgun start. A lunch of baked ziti, meatballs, and chicken Parmesan will be served at noon. The golf outing is crucial to the Elizabethtown Football Club’s support of the varsity and freshman football teams, said club vice president Kristin Gilhool. Typically, the club covers the costs of football camps, pregame and postgame meals, strength and speed programs, training equipment, team gear, coaches’ apparel, and more, for a
total of about $20,000. “This is our big fundraiser,” Gilhool remarked. “The community has been so wonderful and supportive. We raise a really good chunk of change by doing this.” Some of the expenses will be different this year, as the football program has already begun to adapt to safety measures implemented to protect against the coronavirus. Two team camps have been canceled, and the three-a-week offseason practices have been short. “They’re trying to do social distancing,” Gilhool said. “They’re trying to do their best to stay safe.” The Bears’ first home football game, against Donegal, is currently scheduled for 10 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 29, at Thompson Field, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. However, Gilhool noted that the game might be moved up to 7 p.m.
on Friday, Aug. 28. Either way, she hopes to be in the stands cheering on her son, quarterback Patrick Gilhool, and she expects the Pennsylvania Interscholastic Athletic Association (PIAA) to release attendance guidelines. In the meantime, the PIAA’s website includes a link to Gov. Tom Wolf ’s “Return to Sport Guidance for Schools,” which was last updated on June 22. The document at www.governor. pa.gov/covid-19/sports-guidance/ states that sports-related activities must adhere to gathering limitations as set forth by the Governor’s Plan for Phased Reopening, which caps attendance at 250 people in the green phase. Additionally, the number of people in a facility must not exceed 50% of its capacity. “During the yellow and green phases of reopening, sports-related activities See Golf Outing pg 4

The Lancaster County Community Foundation in partnership with the United Way of Lancaster County awarded the Pennsylvania Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (PSPCA) Lancaster Center a $2,000 grant to assist pet owners in need throughout the region. The funds have been put into action to provide pet food as families face the health and economic impacts of the coronavirus. The PSPCA Lancaster Center, 848 S. Prince St., Lancaster, is working to assist pet families in need and has provided hundreds of pounds of dry food and countless pounds of wet food to its clients. With other area resources shuttered, the PSPCA has worked to ensure that anyone who needs assistance feeding their dogs or cats during this time receives it. To ensure safety of the PSPCA Lancaster staff and the public, all pet food pantry pickups are done See PSPCA pg 4

At the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards, Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) senior Claire Fritz won the award for Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Play for her role as Alice Sycamore in “You Can’t Take It With You.” Inspired by the Tony Awards, the awards program is held annually to recognize outstanding achievement by local high school students in their musical and play productions. High schools in Cumberland, Dauphin, Lebanon, and Perry counties were eligible to receive nominations. The Elizabethtown Area School District was invited to participate due to its proximity to Hershey. Independent evaluators representing the Hershey Theatre Apollo Awards attended each school’s

field to the top 200 finalists. Voters will decide which community improvement projects win. The public will have a chance to vote 10 times a day, every day for 10 days, from Wednesday, Sept. 23, through Friday, Oct. 2, for their favorite causes from the list of finalists. The 40 causes that receive the most votes will each win a $25,000 grant. Winners will be announced on Wednesday, Nov. 4. Last year, 163,000 people cast a total of 4.4 million votes in support of their favorite causes, selecting winners from small towns and big cities. Since the program began, State Farm has awarded $8 million in support of more than 300 causes. Rite Aid customers can support the lifesaving work of Children’s Miracle Network (CMN) Hospitals during a critical time through Rite Aid’s annual Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign, running through Saturday, Aug. 8. Rite Aid customers can add a donation to their in-store transactions, as well as donate online through Rite Aid’s social media channels. All proceeds will be received by the local community’s children’s hospital to fund critical treatments and health care services and to provide pediatric medical equipment and charitable care for 53 children’s hospitals in the communities that Rite Aid serves. This year will mark the 26th year that Rite Aid has conducted the Miracle Balloon fundraising campaign benefiting CMN Hospitals, raising and donating $95 million in support of children’s hospitals. This year’s effort comes with an unprecedented pandemic adding urgency to the cause. Children’s hospitals and their systems are actively working to develop COVID-19 treatments and vaccines. At the same time, investments in telehealth service, personal protective equipment and coronavirus testing supplies have escalated hospitals’ expenses while the suspension of elective surgeries and routine procedures is costing hospitals revenue and impacting children in need of care. The Rite Aid Foundation will also direct funds raised through KidCents, its customer-generated charitable giving program dedicated to improving the health and well-being of children living in communities Rite Aid serves, through the duration of the campaign. In April, the foundation also issued a special $250,000 grant to CMN Hospitals to address immediate needs related to the COVID-19 pandemic.
A grant funding opportunity from State Farm is being offered for nonprofits. State Farm Neighborhood Assist will award $25,000 grants to 40 nonprofit organizations to help fund neighborhood improvement projects. In a recent State Farm research study, one-quarter of respondents said that they are “extremely” or “very” involved in trying to improve their neighborhood and six in 10 said they are trying to improve their neighborhood in some capacity. State Farm Neighborhood Assist aims to be a catalyst for that change. Individuals can submit a cause at www.neighborhoodassist.com. A submission guide is available on the website. State Farm will accept the first 2,000 submissions. The State Farm Review Committee will then narrow the
