Dustin was diagnosed with Ewing’s sarcoma, a rare type of cancer that typically affects people ages 10 to 20. He returned to Pennsylvania

homemade baked goods, and hand-dipped ice cream. A children’s tent with activities and prizes will open at approximately 11 a.m. A bounce house and barrel train rides - all at no cost - will also be part of the festivities. Volleyball courts and a playground will also be open for use. Cake walks, which will be free and open to people of all ages, will also take place during the evening concert. Volunteer Gail Ruhl explained that the picnic was traditionally used to help raise funds for Sunday school initiatives at the church. In recent years, proceeds from food sales have been used to maintain the picnic grove, and that will continue this year. In addition to hosting the annual community picnic, the grove is the site of a week of evening services each summer

that include gospel music, worship, Bible-based messages, and ice cream. The grove services will be held at 7 p.m. each evening from Sunday, July 21 through Friday, July 26, rain or shine. The speakers for each evening are as follows: the Rev. Jim Price, retired Ruhl’s UMC pastor; the Rev. Jason Perkowski, pastor of Faith UMC and Oregon UMC; the Rev. John Loughlin, pastor of Salem UMC in Manheim; the Rev. Rob Timlin, pastor of Faith UMC; the Rev. Rich Rimert, pastor of Conestoga UMC; and the Rev. Larry Kipp, pastor of Brownstown Emmanuel UMC and Salem UMC in Rothsville. For more details, readers may call the church at 717-665-3400 or visit www.ruhlschurch.org. Sponsored by the Eater Family Foundation, the main-stage Eater Theater has been under construction since the end of May and currently seats 156 people. SSC chairman of the board Kyle Brubaker noted that future renovations to the former church sanctuary will include adding balcony seating to further increase seating capacity. “I’m really excited about the new space and what it has to offer,” said Brubaker. The Gallery Stage, where SSC performed “Company” earlier this year, will be set up with con-

cessions for sale and tables to allow patrons to mingle during intermission as well as before and after the show. In addition to being the home of SSC, the Marietta Center for the Arts serves as a hub for educational opportunities with art-focused classes offered year-round for children and adults. Going forward, the venue will be available for rentals, including weddings and gatherings of various sizes. To learn more, readers may visit https://mariettaarts.org.

With music by Andrew Lloyd Webber and lyrics and book by Tim Rice, “Evita” follows the true story of young and ambitious Eva Perón’s rise to power in Argentina. SSC actress Julia Tighe Howey, who will portray Eva, described the show as a rock opera that tells the story through songs like the mega-hit “Don’t Cry for Me, Argentina.” “The music is fun and exciting and classic,” said Tighe Howey. A series of flashbacks follows Eva from her start as an impoverished child and teenager to how she became a woman of influence and power as the second wife of Argentine president Juan Perón. Eva was first lady from 1946 until she died in 1952 at the age of 33. “Eva is adored and worshipped by so many people. She came from absolutely nothing and worked herself to the top, not always making the best choices along the way, but I think her heart was always behind it,” said Tighe Howey. “It is one of those dream roles

Giant Introduces PA Preferred Shelf Tags

Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding recently spoke at a press conference that was held in Camp Hill to announce that Giant Food Stores has introduced PA Preferred shelf tags at its Pennsylvania stores.

H. Malone Remodeling

To make it easier for customers to find products that have been grown or produced in Pennsylvania, Giant Food Stores has introduced PA Preferred shelf tags at all of its 156 stores located within Pennsylvania. PA Preferred is the official brand of food and agricultural products grown, produced, or processed in Pennsylvania. Giant has supported the program, which is designed to help the state’s farmers and food suppliers grow their businesses, since its inception in 2004. Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture Secretary Russell Redding recently joined Giant vice president and chief marketing officer Matt Simon at a press conference in Camp Hill to unveil the shelf tag program. More than 900 items, including meat, poultry, dairy, snacks, condiments, sauces, and even pet food, are now identified by tags

with the PA Preferred logo displayed at the shelf level, helping customers to identify Pennsylvania products. The PA Preferred shelf tags will be displayed in stores year-round. With the arrival of the local produce season in its stores, Giant also plans to recognize local farmers through a multifaceted marketing campaign that includes in-store signage and displays, social and digital media, TV and radio advertising, billboards, and the company’s instore Savory magazine. From farm names to state identifier stickers and imagery showcasing the season’s harvest, the campaign aims to highlight the stories behind the farms and people responsible for bringing the products to stores. For more information, readers may visit https:// giantfoodstores.com/.

“Meditations On Loss” Schreiber Reaches Program Slated $1 Million Goal At 7 p.m. on Tuesday, July 30, the community is invited to gather at Mulberry Art Studios to experience an evening of music and poetry. Organizers hope that the event, titled “Meditations on Loss,” may offer the opportunity for a little healing for those who are grieving. The program will be a meditation on the tragedy of life, loss, and time, transformed by music, nature, and poetry. Justin Hopkins will read two poems: Elizabeth Bishop’s “One Art,” a villanelle about the art of losing, and Donald Hall’s “Without,” a poem without punctuation on the loss of his wife. Christopher Brooks, violin, and Patrick White, bass, will interweave music among these poems, performing solo violin, solo electric bass, and violin and bass together, culminating with Bach’s “Sarabande” in D minor and Elliott Carter’s “Mnemosyne” for solo violin, which he wrote in memory of his late wife. The inspiration for this event grew from White, who tells stories of many people whom he loved who have recently died. Tickets for “Meditations on

Bassist Patrick White will be among the performers during “Meditations on Loss,” which will be held on Tuesday, July 30, at 7 p.m. at Mulberry Art Studios. Dayspring Will Host Lecture On Wednesday, July 31, Dayspring Christian Academy, 120 College Ave., Mountville, will present a Remember America Lecture Series event, “Worldview Collision: Where Will Your Children Stand?” It will take place from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The evening’s lecture will be divided into two parts, “A 400-Year Story:

History of Education in America” and “A 30-Year Story: The Worldview Shift of Youth in America.” The lecture will be led by Dan Smithwick of the Nehemiah Institute, and admission will be free and open to the public. Registration is requested and is available at www.DayspringChristian.com.

The Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, a Lancaster County-based provider of pediatric therapy services, reached the milestone it was aiming for when the Schreiber Endowment Fund surpassed $1 million. Jaime Jackson (right), partner at Atlee Hall, a Lancaster-based law firm, made a $10,000 donation in June to put Schreiber over its goal. Jackson and James DeBord (left), Schreiber president, visited the infant room at the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development on July 2 to mark the achievement. A fundraising drive, called the Atlee Hall Drive to $1 Million Challenge, helped raise more than $200,000 for the endowment in the past six months. The law firm provided the initial gift in the drive, which kicked off in January. The Schreiber Endowment Fund is part of the organization’s strategy to strengthen its long-term financial position. has served more than 200 children. Last year the center enrolled more than 30 children, the capacity for the center, which operates on a small budget and is funded in large measure from the local fundraising efforts undertaken by the Lancaster Lodge of Perfection and the board of governors that oversees the program. The cost to tutor a child each year averages about $6,000, and the center has a waitlist of about 20 children. The center also offers free training for adults to receive a Certified Dyslexia Practitioner 1 certificate. Fundraising efforts currently include the annual Lancaster W. Scott Stoner Memorial Children’s Dyslexia Center Walk in October, the Extraordinary Give in November, and car wash coupons to Mr. Car Wash in December. The center hopes to expand its fundraising efforts in order to accommodate the increasing number of children who have a need. Dates for fundraisers are available at http://childrensdyslexiacenterof
