Students Honored For Good Deeds Several Elizabethtown Area School District students were recently recognized as Do the Right Thing recipients. Seventh-grader Lauren Eckroth raised money for an animal shelter by creating artwork for classmates and teachers. Seventh-grader Brendan Rilatt found an expensive item that
another student had left behind and immediately turned it in to his teacher. Fifth-grader Ben Candy reported a situation of cyber bullying. Sixth-grader Maddie Sivulich welcomed a new student to her class. Third-grader Cristian Francisco Aguilar went above and beyond each
day in helping his teacher support other students in need. Third-grader Harper Walters spoke out when she observed other students acting in a disrespectful manner at school. Third-grader Hunter Koppel donated his books to his school to benefit other students. Kindergartner Cora Stackhouse asked guests at her
birthday party to make donations to the Elizabethtown Bear Bag program in lieu of gifts. Typically, students’ good deeds are acknowledged at ceremonies held at their respective schools, where they receive a certificate of recognition, a T-shirt, and a gift certificate. However,

Schreiber Rubber Duckie Race Moves Online Checking In With KPETS According to Dan Fink, director of marketing and public relations for the Schreiber Center for Pediatric Development, 625 Community Way, Lancaster, this is just the second time that Schreiber has received a $250,000 matching grant in its 84year history, and both times it has come from the Donald B. and Dorothy L. Stabler Foundation.
“This one comes at a critical moment for us as we work to navigate a COVID-19 world,” Fink remarked. “Like many nonprofits, we’re facing a challenging period in the next 12 months.” The grant will provide a dollar-for-dollar match for all the money raised by Schreiber starting June 11, when the Stabler Foundation forwarded its approval. Stabler has committed up to $250,000, and Schreiber has one year to raise the matching funds. The initial $250,000 grant combined with what Schreiber hopes to raise from the community would mean $500,000 for the local organization, matching the amount generated from a similar grant by the Stabler Foundation in 2016. That grant was the largest contribution toward adding an infant room to Schreiber’s Circle of Friends Academy child care center. See Schreiber pg 2

“Prior to COVID-19, we couldn’t keep up with the demand for our services,” commented Karen Gerth, founder and executive adviser of Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS). “Many of our volunteers seem to find a population or type of visit that they enjoy and that is a good fit for their pets so they may focus in that area.” Gerth reported that KPETS currently has 443 registered human volunteers and 476 registered animals, as some of the volunteers have multiple pets that work with them. The teams provide more than 10,000 hours of visitation every year in communities throughout southcentral Pennsylvania and northern Maryland. “More and more facilities, agencies, and organizations are becoming aware of the benefits of the human/animal interaction, and KPETS is a way to implement that benefit,” Gerth remarked. See KPETS pg 6
Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) sent collages and cards to clients, students, and staff members of local health care institutions to provide encouragement during the shutdown.

Community Way, Lancaster. Ticket sales will end on Saturday, Sept. 12. Proceeds from ticket sales will be matched by the Stabler grant. COVID-19 prompted the shift to a virtual duckie race, and there will be other ways this year’s event will look different. Schreiber supporters are encouraged to purchase tickets online to limit personal contact during duckie transactions. Fun, new content, particularly contests and biographies of some of this year’s souvenir duckies, will be posted on the aforementioned website. Additionally, Schreiber has a new Duckie Mobile that will travel around Lancaster County selling duckies and bringing other excitement to neighborhoods. This year’s theme is “Choose Your Own Adventure and features some of the most popular souvenir duckies from recent years, including dinosaurs, unicorns, and cows. To honor health care heroes, doctors, nurses and other medical duckies are available as well. The Schreiber Center is a nonprofit organization that aims to offer the finest in innovative therapy, education, and recreation resources for children, teenagers, and young adults. “This grant couldn’t have come at a better time for Schreiber, said Schreiber president James DeBord. “Obviously, with everything happening around COVID-19, raising revenue is even more of a concern than usual. The community rallied around us, as it always does, these past three months,
and behavioral health services, primarily through telehealth sessions, since early April. Circle of Friends Academy reopened on June 8. Camp Schreiber began operating virtually on June 22. In addition, some Schreiber fundraising events that were limited, delayed, or postponed are finding new dates. The softball weekend will be held from Friday to Sunday, Aug. 21 to 23, and the Golf Classic will take place on Wednesday, Oct. 21. “We will keep making adjustments as we go, DeBord said, “and we will keep telling our story. This place has been around for 84 years. I have faith that the staff, our leadership, and this community will do what’s necessary to make sure we’re still here on the other side of COVID. Additionally, Schreiber has moved its iconic Rubber Duckie Race online. This year’s race would have been the 32nd event, but the tens of thousands of racing ducks will not take their trip down the Conestoga River at Lancaster County Central Park. Instead, a special online duckie event will be held on Sunday, Sept. 13, to determine prize winners. Tickets went on sale July 1 and will be available at www.schreiber pediatric.org/events/duckies or in person at Duckie Central, also known as Schreiber’s financial development office, 610

Siloam Ethiopia co-founder Wegayhu Ketema and a team of volunteers will prepare an Ethiopian meal in Landisville on Aug. 1. Proceeds will be used to provide food support to clients of the free medical clinic that Siloam Ethiopia runs in Harar, Ethiopia.
Over the past few years, Landisvillebased Siloam Ethiopia has held fundraisers to build a clinic to provide free medical care in Harar, Ethiopia, and to purchase much-needed laboratory equipment. The proceeds from the fundraising meal on Saturday, Aug. 1, are earmarked for another fundamental need. “We serve the poorest of the poor in the clinic,” said Siloam Ethiopia cofounder Wegayhu Ketema. “We want to give them food to eat.” Ketema reported that COVID-19 has been hitting Ethiopian residents hard. For the people the clinic serves in Harar, life was already difficult. Prior to the pandemic, individuals subsisted on what they could glean on a daily basis. Now, illness and quarantines are putting those small incomes in jeopardy. “It’s reached the stage where people don’t have food to eat,” Ketema
explained. “My goal is to have a soup kitchen under a tree somewhere. If we send the money, the church people will help to cook. We want to provide one meal a day until God does a miracle.” Ketema cares deeply about the people in Harar because she grew up there. Although she began a new full-time nursing job at a rehab hospital in York a few months ago, she recently agreed to pick up some shifts at her previous job in Hershey. Ketema sent the extra income to the medical director of the clinic in Harar so staff members can buy basic grocery staples for their clients. “I had the opportunity to work. They don’t,” Ketema said. “God is good to us.” God’s goodness has been evident throughout Siloam Ethiopia’s history, Ketema asserted, adding that when she organizes fundraisers, she puts them in the Lord’s hands. The last fundraiser - on June 27 - was particularly marvelous, as turnout was greater than anticipated.

from Ketema’s job in Hershey gave her a check for $1,000. “The generosity of people (overwhelms me), especially in times like now. They’re giving sacrificially,” Ketema commented. “We’re still paying staff people (at the clinic in Harar). We’re teaching about COVID19. I just want to say thank you.” For more information about Siloam Ethiopia, readers may visit www.siloam ethio.org, and individuals who would like to let Ketema know they plan to attend the Aug. 1 fundraiser may email siloam ethio@gmail.com.

“We ran out of food last time,” Ketema recalled. “We cooked and ran out of food and ran out of food again.” Typically, Ketema and her husband, Demeke Getahun, do all the cooking for the fundraising meals. Because the previous fundraiser went so well, she has enlisted help, and members of the women’s group at Ethiopian Evangelical Church in Lancaster (EECL) will assist with food preparation. Due to COVID-19 safety measures, the June 27 fundraising meal was presented as a drive-through rather than a buffet dinner. The same method will be employed for the Aug. 1 event. Members of the public are welcome to go to EECL, 175 Church St., Landisville, between 1 and 6 p.m. on Aug. 1. Vehicles should enter from Camp Meeting Road and exit onto Church Street. “The menu is the same because people love the food,” Ketema said. “They love the chicken, the lentils, the cabbage, the split peas.” The meals will be prepackaged with injera and will be available by donation. The June 27 event generated $5,000 to buy masks and other PPE for use in the clinic and distribution to Harar residents. One supporter dropped off a check for $5,500 to build a well in a neighborhood that has no running water. A supervisor

Since its annual Antique, Art and Craft Show in June had to be canceled because of COVID-19, the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce has come up with a new fundraiser that will benefit vendors and shoppers alike. The Chamber will host its first-ever virtual marketplace, which will run from Saturday, Aug. 1, through Saturday, Aug. 29. The marketplace can be accessed at www.Svmarketplace.shop. According to event organizers, it will be a one-of-akind shopping experience that will allow people to visit a website where they can shop from local businesses, restaurants, artists and others. The hope is that those who exhibited or shopped at the traditional show will also participate in the virtual event. “I talked to some local vendors, and they depend on these events,” said Beverly Shank, Chamber director, explaining how the idea came about. “We tried to figure out something we could do to benefit the (shoppers) and allow our members and small businesses in town to participate. We’ve never done it before, but we felt there was huge need out there.” People may find crafts, antiques and possibly clothing while shopping virtually. “We are trying to encourage restaurants to promote their businesses with a gift certificate or coupon,” said Shank. “Or (vendors may offer) things people would
like for unique Christmas gifts.” The Chamber is partnering with Alegre Events to present the virtual fundraiser. The company will set up the online marketplace, which will allow shoppers to view a list of vendors. They can then click on the ones they are interested in. “It will be like shopping on Etsy,” noted Shank, adding, “If a vendor is having trouble getting things set up, Alegre will help them. They should not shy away from (the virtual marketplace) because of technology.” According to Shank, vendors and artisans will have multiple opportunities to be discovered on the marketplace site through various search options. Vendors may also share demonstration videos online to educate shoppers about their craft or business. “We’re hoping to get people who want to do educational demonstration videos,” said Shank. “For example, maybe someone who makes animal balloons may do a demonstration or someone who makes wheat baskets will (explain) how to weave with reeds. We are also hoping some musical people may want to do a portion of a song and sell DVDs. I think people will have fun with this.” As they browse, shoppers will be able to add items to their online cart, followed by a checkout process that will direct the orders to the small businesses’ inboxes. A portion of all sales will be donated back to the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce. The Chamber will accept vendor registrations through Saturday, July 25. A discount will be provided to nonprofit organizations and to Chamber members.
Interested vendors should visit www.visitsusquehannavalley.com/event listings/marketplace or email event1@ visitsusquehannavalley.com for complete details and an application. The Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce is a nonprofit member organization dedicated to promoting the Susquehanna Valley’s business and tourism industry through special events and promotions. One of its most popular events is the Bridge Bust, which is still
scheduled this year for Saturday, Oct. 3. During Bridge Bust, vendors offer crafts, food, art and more on the Veterans Memorial Bridge (Route 462), which is closed to vehicle traffic during the day. The Chamber also operates the Visitors Center, which is the official center for the rivertowns of Columbia, Marietta and Wrightsville boroughs. The Visitors Center, located at 445 Linden St., Columbia, is currently closed, but plans are in the works to open the site this summer.
In 2019, the Susquehanna Valley Chamber of Commerce held its annual Antique, Art and Craft Show featuring nearly 200 vendors that were located along Locust Street and in Columbia’s Locust Street Park. Because this year’s event was canceled, the chamber will instead hold its first-ever virtual marketplace that will run from Aug. 1 through Aug. 29.

The Lancaster Chamber and the Economic Development Company of Lancaster County have announced the second phase of funding to support Lancaster County-based businesses on the path to reopening and recovery after months of economic shutdown due to the COVID-19 pandemic. Funding criteria and the application portal, which opened on July 20, are available at https://recovery lancaster.com. The website is the primary resource for grant funding, personal protective equipment (PPE), public health issues, data analysis, and other information related to the $33.4 million Lancaster County Economic Recovery Plan approved by the Board of Lancaster County Commissioners in May. Phase two of the Recovery and Sustainability Fund offers $15 million in grant awards to Lancaster County-based
businesses with 100 or fewer employees. The grant portal opened for applications at 8 a.m. on July 20 and will close at 5 p.m. on Friday, July 24. Phase two of funding will offer two sets of criteria, one for businesses with 20 or fewer employees and one for businesses with up to 100 employees. Businesses that previously applied and did not qualify are encouraged to review the new criteria. Grants will not be awarded on a first-come, first-served basis; individuals have five days to submit applications. Businesses are also encouraged to review the criteria for submissions on the aforementioned website prior to July 20. Once the application portal closes, the grant committee will begin evaluating all applications received. Those meeting the criteria and demonstrating the greatest need will be sent to
the Lancaster County commissioners for approval, and recipients will be notified by email. This round of funding follows phase one, which awarded a total of $10.4 million to 423 companies earlier in July. In addition to funding, businesses with 100 or fewer employees can register for a free COVID-19 supply kit, gain public health information, and subscribe to a newsletter for email updates on the aforementioned website. Economic Recovery Plan funding comes from the $95 million in Coronavirus Aid, Relief and Economic Security (CARES) Act money that Lancaster County received from the federal government. This funding will be used to help to provide a positive path forward for the local economy, which is fueled in part by more than 12,000 businesses with 100 or fewer employees.

Grace Chapel Plans Gospel Concert Gospel singer Dusty Aleman will perform in concert at Grace Chapel, 2535 Colebrook Road, Elizabethtown, on Sunday, July 26, at 6 p.m. in the church pavilion. Social distancing regulations will be in place. Aleman grew up in a small town in southcentral Texas. He graduated from high school and later was drafted into the Army, where he spent a tour in Vietnam in 1966 and 1967. Aleman started
riding in rodeos when he came back from Vietnam. By the time he was 38, Aleman had been through two marriages and several relationships in between. He had participated in rodeos, worked construction, and driven trucks, and he had also been introduced to illegal drugs. In July 1984, Dusty left Texas and moved to Oklahoma hoping to start a new life. In September 1984, Dusty attempted twice to take his life, but he

nities, provide a comforting distraction to cancer patients and other hospitalized individuals, encourage adults and children in all different types of therapy sessions, and support reluctant learners and struggling readers. “Visiting schools can be anything from reading programs to working with life skills or multiple disability classes. The pet can motivate or calm in ways that amaze the staff (members),” Gerth said. “We’ve heard over and over again about residents in health care or hospice settings who finally smile or even communicate when the therapy pet is with them.” With the stay-at-home orders suspending in-person visits, KPETS volunteers utilized social media and other communication technologies to stay in touch with their clients. Some teams recorded themselves reading stories with their pets, while others encouraged children to read to their own animals. Virtual meetings were held with hospital and school staff members to know they are being thought of. One team created a video featuring a day in the life of a therapy dog under quarantine for a life skills class. The students were curious to see how therapy dogs were being affected by the situation,

Gerth said. Teams also made a special video for the Class of 2020 at Warwick High School. “We had a very special bond with this class two years ago when they lost three students within a few weeks,” Gerth said. “We wanted to wish them well, congratulate them, and let them know how proud we are of them and how honored we were to be a part of their lives during that most sad time.” With Pennsylvania beginning to reopen, KPETS is also considering how to begin to make visits again. Gerth asserted that guidelines will be in place to ensure the safety of the clients, volunteers, and pets. Any facility or organization that would like to host a KPETS team visit for the benefit of its staff members, clients, or students may submit a request at www.kpets.org. For insurance purposes and the safety and protection of all involved, visits cannot be in a private setting unless a third-party professional is present. KPETS welcomes additional volunteers, as the demand for its services is great. Interested individuals may apply on the aforementioned website. Also, individuals and organizations may partner with KPETS to ensure its continued operation. “KPETS does rely totally on community funding to provide our services free of charge,” Gerth explained. “Many of those we serve are nonprofits as well, making donations from businesses and private donors essential for KPETS’ sustainability.” Gerth noted that KPETS is not authorized to help anyone obtain emotional support animals. For more information about KPETS, readers may visit www.kpets.org or call 888-68KPETS (888-685-7387).

Clear Glass, and Tote Bags R061367
(Wed-Sat 50%, Mon-Tues 25¢)
The first Cruisin’ for Cats car show to benefit the Columbia Animal Shelter drew about 50 vehicles last year. Organizers hope to surpass that number at the second annual Cruisin’ for Cats, set for Aug. 1. 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Sunday, Aug. 2, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. has been set as the rain date. The shelter facility has a large area for parking and a lawn with a stage, so it is ideal for hosting events like car shows and the Shelter in Place summer concert series that has been held on Saturday evenings this summer. Vehicles entered in the car show may arrive as early as 8 a.m. and will be spaced apart to promote social distancing. There is a cost to enter the show, with a discount for those who preregister at the shelter or by finding “Cruisin’ for Cats Car Show” at www.eventbrite.com. Spectators will be admitted free of charge. Pets on leashes will be welcome to accompany their owners.
Hours: Monday thru Saturday 9:00 a.m.—8:00 p.m.
Prizes will be awarded to exhibitors in a variety of categories, and there will be opportunities for attendees to win cash. Food trucks will sell refreshments. Prequalified households may adopt animals during the event as well. In addition to adult companion animals, the shelter currently has more than 40 kittens available for forever homes. The proceeds from Cruisin’ for Cats will be used to expand the clinic area, Loughlin said. The goal is to add radiology and dental services by purchasing an X-ray unit and motorized dental tools. For more information about the Columbia Animal Shelter, readers may visit www.columbiaanimalshelter.com or call 717-681-6858.

“We were about nine months into our first year when everything changed,” said Tammy Loughlin, executive director of Columbia Animal Shelter, which officially opened to the public on June 1, 2019. Until the stay-at-home order was announced in March 2020, business had been booming at the private shelter that specializes in felines. “Our vision is to help manage the overpopulation of cats in Columbia,” Loughlin said, adding that only residents of the borough may surrender domesticated cats for rehoming, but anyone may adopt from the shelter. “We have a lot of adopters coming in from far away,” Loughlin said. “We’re excited about the reach we’re starting to get. If ever the shelter is empty, we’ve done our job.” The shelter took in about 300 cats in 2019 and is on track to more than double that number in 2020, Loughlin related. And that is with a three-month shutdown. “We were completely full with a waiting list when (the pandemic) hit,” Loughlin said. The Columbia Animal Shelter is located in the old Vigilant Fire Hall, 265 S.
capacity for 120 cats. While the stay-at-home order was in place, staff members took care of the animals that were living in the shelter. Once in the yellow phase, intakes and adoptions were handled via appointment. The shelter reopened its low-cost spay/neuter clinic that had been offered every Monday since June 2019, and it is in the process of restarting the trap/neuter/release (TNR) program. Loughlin noted that the TNR program had just begun when the shutdown was announced, and only two procedures had been performed. “We have a working barn cat program,” Loughlin shared. “We work with a lot of farms in the area (that take feral cats that may need to be relocated).” The late Judy McKonly donated funds to build the Columbia Animal Shelter, but donations, grants, and fundraisers will keep it operating successfully. The Cruisin’ for Cats car show was introduced last year as a signature fundraising event. It drew 50-some cars, which Loughlin described as “not a bad first start.” She is expecting a much larger turnout for the second annual Cruisin’ for Cats car show, which will be held at the shelter on Saturday, Aug. 1, from
