Masonic Village Resident Turns 105 By Chelsea Peifer
On July 9, Masonic Village resident Florence “Flossie” Methlie celebrated her 105th birthday. She credits her health and longevity to one of her choices: “I didn’t go to the medicine cabinet.” Flossie’s advice to younger people would be to do the same: Do not be so quick to take medicine for every minor ailment. “She always was very health conscious,” said Flossie’s niece Nina Gaskill. Flossie never smoked or drank alcohol. She ate a lot of fish and seafood, and she exercised regularly. Gaskill noted that even when Flossie was 95, she was still regularly walking the halls and doing exercises and stretches in her room. Flossie is currently the oldest resident at Masonic Village. She and her husband, Charlie, moved to the campus more than 20 years ago and
settled into an apartment, but within a week he passed away. “Uncle Charlie made sure she got here,” Nina remarked. Born and raised in Weatherly, Flossie is the daughter of the late Elmer Young and Mable Rosenstock. She had two older brothers, two younger brothers, and a younger sister. When Flossie’s mother came home from the hospital with her baby sister, she said, “I guess I got another brother.” She was elated to instead find out she now had a sister, Betty - Nina’s mother. “Even though they were 11 years apart, they were very close,” Nina said. “And we’ve always been close because my mother and her were so close.” One of Flossie’s fond childhood memories was making homemade ice cream as a family every Sunday. Her oldest brother would take the motor off the washing machine and configure it to churn the ice cream so he did not have to do it by hand. See Flossie Methlie pg 4
PORK BARBECUE
The Elizabethtown Field Hockey Club will hold a pork barbecue dinner fundraiser on Friday, Aug. 2, from 4 to 7 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Eat-in and takeout options will be available. Meals will include one-third pound of slow-roasted pork, a roll, macaroni and cheese, applesauce, chips, and a dessert. Those eating on-site will receive a beverage, as well. For tickets, call 717-314-6807 or email dksteffie@comcast.net.

A variety of homes will be included in the 35th annual Mount Gretna Tour of Homes and Gardens on Saturday, Aug. 3. The 35th annual Mount Gretna Tour of Homes and Gardens will take place on Saturday, Aug. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The self-guided walking tour will offer a glimpse into the architecture and style of homes in a variety of Mount Gretna neighborhoods. Sites include tiny summer cottages, weekend getaways, and year-round “winterite” homes. Participants may also take a trolley ride to one home near the lake. Tour attendees will see how people have transformed the cottages to accommodate modern life while keeping the structures’ charm.
An iconic home from a previous year is back on the tour. The cottage was built in 1903 by a New York industrialist and has one of the largest porches in town. Rumor has it that this house was designed on the back of a napkin by a famous architect. The tour is sponsored by Snitz Creek Cabinet Shop. Proceeds will benefit Gretna Music, an organization that has been presenting music in central Pennsylvania for more than 44 years. To purchase tickets in advance, readers may call Gretna Music at 717-361-1508, visit
www.gretnamusic.org, or stop by any Stauffers of Kissel Hill location, the Gretna Emporium in Mount Gretna, or Snitz Creek Cabinet Shop, 2020 Cornwall Road, Lebanon. Tickets will also be available
for purchase on the day of the tour for a higher fee. These tickets will be sold outside the Mount Gretna post office on Princeton Avenue and in front of the Mount Gretna Playhouse at 200 Pennsylvania Ave.

“And then he had to put it back on (the washing machine),” relayed Flossie. “He did that every week.” Flossie’s father, Elmer, sold Studebakers for years before opening his own plumbing business. Her mother, Mable, was a notary public and sold insurance - a business she had learned from her own father. When Mable passed away at age 56 from ovarian cancer, the story goes that there were more flowers at her funeral than anyone had ever had at a funeral in Weatherly. “She was loved. And (Flossie) was the person in her family that sort of took over and mothered everyone when Grandma died,” Nina shared. Flossie worked as a telephone operator at the Bell Telephone Company for many years, connecting people in the days before anyone could dial on their own telephones. She met her husband, Charlie, at Bell, and they were married on July 16, 1955. Since Charlie was a supervisor, once they were married the two could no longer work at the same location per company policy, so Flossie trans-

Proclamation Presbyterian Welcomes Pastoral Intern
Proclamation Presbyterian Church pastor Troy De Bruin (left) will be joined by new pastoral intern Collin Gingrich (right), who will be on staff through May 2021. The church shares meeting space with Florin Church of the Brethren in Mount Joy, with weekly worship services on Sunday mornings and an evening service on the second Sunday of each month.
churches and to have pastoral interns who go out and do that. Proclamation Presbyterian is a church plant of Westminster Presbyterian Church and originally met at Mount Joy Church of God for two years before moving to Florin COB. “We’re really thankful for the love and encouragement we’ve received from both Florin and Mount Joy Church of God,” De Bruin stated. “We’ve learned from them and have really enjoyed having the opportunity to share space with both churches.” Gingrich was valedictorian of the Donegal High School Class of 2010 and graduated from Grove City College with a bachelor’s degree in history and biblical studies. Gingrich is the son of Jeff and Ellen Gingrich of Mount Joy and grew up attending Community Bible Church (CBC) in Marietta. It was toward the end of his time at Grove City College that he first began prayerfully considering pursuing the path to become an ordained pastor. “I was beginning to feel called to preach Jesus Christ and felt
called to minister to people in the church,” shared Gingrich. “CBC gave me lots of opportunities to learn and teach, so I’m really thankful to CBC.” He worked at J.B. Hostetter & Sons before he began attending Westminster Theological Seminary in Glenside, from which he graduated in May. “I was enjoying teaching God’s Word and enjoyed ministering in the context of church,” Gingrich said. “I knew that seminary would give me a chance to test out those gifts.” Now, Gingrich is eager to be part of the congregation of Proclamation Presbyterian. “I think the mission statement of Proclamation is really good and balanced - praising God, loving people, praying in the Spirit, and proclaiming Christ - that sounds right on for me,” said Gingrich. Gingrich and his wife, Becky, have one daughter, Joanna, who was born in January. For more information, readers may visit www.proclamation pca.com or call the church office at 717-207-8220.

At the beginning of June, Mount Joy native Collin Gingrich stepped into a new role as pastoral intern at Proclamation Presbyterian Church. The congregation gathers for weekly worship services with Communion on Sundays at 11 a.m. at Florin Church of the Brethren (COB), 815 Bruce Ave., Mount Joy. Presbyterian’s evening services, which are held at 6:30 p.m. on the second Sunday of each month. He will also be serving in the church youth ministry. A weekly Bible study for junior and senior high school students meets at the homes of various church members. Prior to Gingrich, Andy Styer served as the pastoral intern for four years. Styer’s wife, Heidi, also served on the church staff part time. Styer is now pastoring a church in Malden, W.Va. Pastor Troy De Bruin explained that one of Proclamation Presbyterian’s main goals is to be a church that plants

times, each child endured extreme prejudice and made a positive impact on the world. The exhibit is designed to encourage children and families to explore problems of isolation, fear, and prejudice by giving a face to the Holocaust, the Civil Rights movement, and the AIDS epidemic. Audiovisual presentations, original artifacts, and hands-on interactives will help visitors to learn what it was like to live through the traumatic circumstances that each child endured. The exhibit recreates spaces where each child felt safe. For Anne Frank, exhibit designers chose the building where her family spent two years in hiding from the Nazis. Born in Germany in 1929, Anne went into hiding with her family in 1942. They remained in hiding for 25 months until they were discovered and sent to concentration camps. Anne’s bestselling diary is a testament to the power of words. Visitors will get to explore aspects of the first-grade classroom where Ruby Bridges spent an entire school year alone with her teacher. In 1960, Ruby was one of four girls chosen to integrate the public school system in New Orleans, but she was the only one to attend the all-white William Frantz Public School. She was accompanied by four United States marshals each day as she entered her classroom, walking through an angry mob of protesters who were upset by the Supreme Court order to let black
and white children go to school together. As an adult, Ruby established the Ruby Bridges Foundation to promote tolerance of differences and provide educational resources to children, teachers, and parents nationwide. Finally, visitors will learn about Ryan White, an Indiana teenager whose life brought a voice to the deadly disease of AIDS in the 1980s. As a result of his willingness to speak out, the media and celebrities took up the cause, helping to educate people about the facts of AIDS. Ryan was diagnosed with hemophilia when he was a few days old. After catching pneumonia at age 13 in 1984, he consequently found out he had contracted AIDS from tainted Factor VIII. North Museum exhibits manager Libby Stoesz said that although the exhibit is recommended for children age 8 and older and their families because of being serious in nature, the stories featured can be great conversation starters for children of any age. “It’s good to get kids talking and learning, especially about differences and how you should not bully another kid because he’s different or sick, Stoesz said. “You can be handed some really hard cards in life, like each of these kids were, continued Stoesz. “These three children were a voice, but they didn’t do it alone. The end of the exhibit challenges visitors to consider how they can make a difference. The exhibit is made possible through NEH on the Road, a special initiative of the National Endowment of the Humanities (NEH), and the Mid-America Arts Alliance. “The Power of Children: Making a Difference was organized by the Children’s Museum of Indianapolis. The exhibit opened on June 16 and will remain on display at the North Museum through Sunday, Aug. 11. The museum is open from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays and from noon to 5 p.m. on Sundays. For more information, readers may visit www.northmuseum.org.
