Elizabeth Hughes Society Awards Annual Scholarship The Elizabeth Hughes Society has awarded the Women for Women Scholarship to Amy Shorner-Johnson. The society awarded her $1,000 toward completing a two-year spiritual direction training program at Kairos at the Parish Resource Center. Shorner-Johnson is a graduate of Carson-Newman College in Jefferson City, Tenn., and McAfee School of Theology at Mercer University in Atlanta. She currently is the chaplain and director of religious life at Elizabethtown College, where she provides mentoring, counseling and spiritual guidance for students on campus. She has also played a key role in the development of interfaith service projects recognized by the Interfaith Youth Core, and she organized an

annual civil rights interfaith service and leadership trips to historical sites associated with the Civil Rights Movement. Shorner-Johnson volunteers as a teacher and nursery coordinator at her church, and she serves as conveyor of the Lancaster Interfaith Coalition in Lancaster County. She and her husband live in Elizabethtown and have two young children. The Women for Women Scholarship was established in memory of Esther Winters, who was an Elizabeth Hughes member. The society learned that Winters returned to school as an adult to become a pharmacist and therefore established the scholarship to provide assistance or encouragement for eligible women to return to school for a degree, to obtain or renew a license, or to become certified in an occupation. This year, two women completed

the application process. A committee reviewed the applications, which included letters of recommendation and an essay by the applicant, and selected ShornerJohnson as the recipient. “All of the applicants were very worthy and faced many obstacles to reaching their educational goals. They were all very deserving, but we had to select one award winner,” said chairperson Marilyn Muston. The other committee members are Sandi Bush, Ann Fetter, Carol Hunter, and Marsha Williams. The Elizabeth Hughes Society awards the Women for Women Scholarship each year. Information for next year’s scholarship will be announced in April 2021. The society also awards an annual scholarship to a graduating senior at Elizabethtown Area High School.

UDS Service Dogs Program Plans First Golf Outing Treating The Troops By Dayna M. Reidenouer

ETN

UDS Service Dogs will host its first golf outing on Friday, Aug. 28, at Meadia Heights Golf Club, 402 Golf Road, Lancaster. Program manager Lori

Breece hopes it will become an annual event. “We have been trying to find a signature event that can bring in strong revenue for our program and get the community engaged,” Breece remarked. Landis Communities offered pointers in planning the event. Volunteers met with representatives of golf courses around Lancaster County to see who would want to partner with UDS Service Dogs, and Meadia Heights was the most eager. The Aug. 28 date was scheduled in August 2019. Breece said that when the shutdown occurred, she was afraid that the outing might have to be postponed or canceled, but final planning for the event is going strong. See UDS Service Dogs pg 3

While the celebration of Independence Day on July 4 may have made Americans think back to the moment in Philadelphia in 1776 when the Founding Fathers declared citizens of the 13 colonies free from English rule, owners of several Lancaster County bed-and-breakfasts were thinking of those serving overseas. At least four local innkeepers joined in an Independence Day initiative that sent cookies, socks, banana bread, and toothpaste to members of the U.S. military deployed overseas in an effort dubbed “Inn Support of Our Troops.” Rebecca Gallagher of the Historic Smithton Inn, 900 W. Main St., Ephrata, said she jumped at the chance to take part in the project, noting that “veterans are a soft spot for me.” Rebecca, who owns the inn with her husband, Dave, served as co-chair of the committee that built Veterans Plaza in Ephrata with the Winters Leadership Memorial statue as the centerpiece. After completion of the project, the group held a lecture series that gave area veterans a chance to share their stories. Each Veterans Day for a decade, the inn has See Troops pg 2

UDS Service Dogs (from left) Gibson, Henry, and Kirby were matched with clients in June and have begun team training in preparation for providing assistance to people with physical or intellectual disabilities. The organization will host its first golf outing on Aug. 28 at Meadia Heights Golf Club to raise funds to support the program.

to support the troops. “Recently a young man from our church enlisted in the Marines, and we have been praying for him, along with other service personnel who have so graciously given of their time to protect our great nation,” she said, adding that the opportunity to bake for an assigned member of the service was the least she could do to show support. “I hope to encourage our military to be courageous, to stand firm, and ultimately to trust in God for their hope and future,” she said. Inn Support of Our Troops was organized by Maria Coder, a public relations professional working with the Association of Lodging Professionals (ALP). The effort brought together more than 30 inns across the U.S. Inn Support of Our Troops worked with Soldiers’ Angels participating as Angel Bakers, which gave volunteers access to a database with the first name and state of a service member who had expressed interest in receiving baked goods. Soldiers’ Angels is a national charity providing aid, comfort, and resources to the military, veterans, and their families. Many of the participating inns were closed during the pandemic, which led to income loss and even financial hardship. The Inn Support of Our Troops effort gave bed-and-breakfast owners a chance to showcase their talents and reach out to members of the military serving far from home.

Afghanistan. The pair noted that they have always supported the military by giving free rooms each year to veterans near Veterans Day and offering a discount to active-duty military year round. “We felt the need to support this endeavor,” they said. The owners intend to continue the effort by making monthly gifts to active military members. Jan Garrabrandt, who owns The Artist’s Inn and Gallery, 117 E. Main St., Terre Hill, with her husband. Bruce, sent chocolate chip cookies and a dozen pairs of socks to an armed services member in mid-June. Both her father and her husband’s father served in the Army. “We try to support the military in several ways,” said Jan, who noted that a discount is available to veterans booking any room on any day of the year. “We also participate in the free rooms for veterans program for Veterans Day by giving away all the rooms at the inn to veterans. We’ve been doing this since we opened 24 years ago,” Jan said. Brenda Miller, proprietor of the Brownstone Colonial Inn, 590 Galen Hall Road, Reinholds, baked a fresh batch of chocolate chip and butterscotch chip cookies on the morning of June 23 to mail to a member of the military. She also enclosed a new pair of wool socks as packing and included a letter thanking the young man for his service. This was not Miller’s first effort

UDS Service Dogs from pg 1 On Aug. 28, golfers may check in beginning at 8 a.m. Play will begin with a shotgun start at 9 a.m. and will take a scramble format. Refreshments will be provided. A barbecue buffet is set for 2 p.m. Opportunities to win gift baskets will be available. Additionally, UDS clients and their working service dogs, as well as puppies in training, are slated to attend. Breece hopes that the program’s newest dog - a Doberman pinscher - will have arrived by then and can be introduced at the outing. This will be the first Doberman to go through the UDS Service Dogs program, although Breece has had a pet Doberman for six years. The program’s primary breed is the Labrador retriever, but because Dobermans are tall, they are better suited to providing stability when adults move from sitting to standing and vice versa. Breece had initially hoped to make $50,000 from the golf outing, but revenue expectations have been cut by half. “Any success will be a positive success

because it’s new for us,” she said. The proceeds will be used to purchase more puppies for the program and cover veterinary costs, which can reach $2,000 per animal. With about 12 new puppies every year, UDS Service Dogs has vet bills for 25 dogs a year. Breece noted that in total, the program invests $25,000 in each dog. Clients are charged just $5,000. “We haven’t raised prices in 15 years,” Breece said. Breece is excited about the evolution the program has undergone in recent years. She credited the change to the implementation of a better business plan and processes four years ago. “We had to commit to bringing in more puppies (to be trained),” Breece said. “Now we’re placing six to nine dogs a year. We have eight staff members and 30 puppies in different stages of training. That’s a lot of growth.” Only a portion of the dogs that go through the training process provide mobility assistance. The others go to work as facility

dogs or become pets. Several UDS Service Dogs interact with children in schools and with clients in a counseling office near Philadelphia. Breece would like to increase the services the dogs provide. Currently, staff members are taking classes to become certified to work with veterans with post-traumatic stress disorder (PTSD) and train dogs to assist them, and child advocacy centers are on the waiting list for support canines. “I can’t wait to do it because I know it’ll help these children who have been through so much,” Breece commented. “I know how dogs are already helping in schools. The centers will partner each dog with a child, and the dog will be with them as they move through the court system.” Anyone who would like to support UDS Service Dogs by sponsoring the golf outing may contact Breece at 717-715-8753 or lorib@udservices.org by Saturday, Aug. 1, and golfers may register to play in the outing at www.udservices.org/golf through Friday, Aug. 14.

Fire, Rescue, EMS Grants Available Church Posts Fire, rescue, and EMS companies hampered by lack of fundraising opportunities during the COVID-19 pandemic can register now for grants to help cover expenses. ence, said CCWA president Steve Gergely. The move will also expose previous creek stomp participants to a different tributary of Chiques Creek - the Little Chiques. According to www.chiquescreekwatershed.org, Chiques Creek flows 31 miles from its source in Lebanon County to the Susquehanna River near Marietta. Along the way, it collects water and organisms from Rife Run, Little Chiques Creek, and other creeks and streams. The health of a tributary impacts that of the Chiques Creek and, by extension, the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. It also affects the people and wildlife living around the tributary. “Everyone benefits from cleaner waterways,” Gergely commented, adding that groundwater is affected by stream health too. “It’s important that we provide education to the public and bring awareness to what individuals can do.” The creek stomp is one of the educational events the CCWA offers to the public. Gergely noted that the organization typically hosts a watershed expo during Water Week when it is held in June. This year, however, Water Week was postponed, and the expo was canceled because it draws crowds of up to 600 people. The CCWA opted to hold its annual creek stomp during the rescheduled Water Week.

During the creek stomp, Lancaster County Conservation District representatives will give a presentation, then distribute nets and buckets and lead attendees into the Little Chiques. There, participants may see what they can find in the water, scooping critters with nets and putting them in buckets for examination on shore. The experts will discuss the findings and what they mean to the health of the creek before returning the critters to the water. “It’s a great family event,” Gergely said. “It’s a good way for everybody to get a hands-on experience of what they find in our local waterways.” Additionally, a tour of the wildflower meadow in the park will be offered. People of all ages are welcome to participate in the creek stomp, and the CCWA has been working with Mount Joy Borough to identify safe access points to the creek. There is no cost to participate, but registration is required because attendance will be limited for safety. The event will be held rain or shine. Attendees should wear old shoes and clothing that may get wet, and they should bring masks and drinking water. Hand sanitizer will be provided. For more information about the CCWA and the creek stomp, as well as to register, readers may visit www.chiquescreekwatershed.org.

Cast members will represent Elsa and Anna at different ages, and other well-known characters from the film will include Hans, Kristoff, Olaf, Sven, King Agnarr, Oaken, and Queen Iduna. Weaver noted that one challenge of staging the show is related to the familiarity of the movie. “It’s a very popular movie, so there are expectations for some scenes and singing,” said Weaver, who added that the scale of the show is daunting as well. “(We have) to make it feel massive in the space that we have,” he said. “Trying to make the show feel as big as the movie is one of the challenges.” Auditions for the camp were held in mid-July. Weaver said that a cast of 30 to 40 members is preferable, but a larger cast can be accommodated.

Cavod Academy’s summer musical theater camp for youths ages 10 to 18 has yet to begin, but Alexander Weaver, who will make his first directorial solo effort for the organization, is looking forward to overseeing the camp and producing “Frozen Jr.” at Cavod Academy of the Arts, 665 W. Main St., New Holland. Camp will be held at the venue from Monday, Aug. 3, through Friday, Aug. 14. “The fun is being able to teach students and interacting with the cast and the production crew,” said Weaver. “I love summer camps, (especially) the feel of being able to put on a show, play games, and just connect.”

Three performances of the musical, based on the 2018 Broadway version of the Disney animated film, will be held for the public in the New Holland Community Memorial Park, in the 400 block of Jackson Street, New Holland, on Friday, Aug. 14; Saturday, Aug. 15; and Sunday, Aug. 16, at 8 p.m. each day. “Frozen Jr.” brings royal sisters Elsa and Anna, along with the land of Arendelle, where they live, to life on the stage. The junior version includes songs from animated film such as “Do You Want to Build a Snowman?” and “Let It Go,” along with five new songs, which were written specifically for the Broadway production.
