Forever Changed Business Collaborates With Brittany’s Hope To Build Houses By Chelsea Peifer
As Elizabethtown resident Naomi Fredlund anticipated the five-year anniversary of her company, Life Changes Realty Group, she envisioned a celebration that could somehow involve
all of the business’s clients. One agent suggested doing a larger-scale version of the pay-it-forward program that Life Changes operates, and Fredlund loved the idea. Through pay-it-forward, Life Changes real estate agents donate a

portion of their commission earned when a deal is closed to the charity of the client’s choice. According to Fredlund, that has led to more than $350,000 being donated to various charities thus far. A fundraising endeavor independent of pay-it-forward, however, would be new for the company. When it came to selecting a recipient, Fredlund immediately thought of Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit that aims to help orphaned and at-risk children through See Brittany’s Hope pg 7

Mable Hershey that now it feels like walking into a hotel. “It’s like having a new home. They’re just in awe,” Mable shared. Mable and her husband, John, stepped in to help establish the home as a nonprofit organization in 2017 when it was on the brink of being shut down. Administrator Roxanne Simonson, who has been operating the home at 223-225 Cherry St. since 2001, reached out to the Hersheys in 2014 about the home’s dire situation. The See Our Home Of Hope pg 2

building, formerly known as the Cherry Street Guest Home, was in disrepair, and the income generated from government funding and disability benefits for the residents was not enough to cover daily and long-term operating costs, let alone any capital improvements needed. The Hersheys had met Roxanne when a homeless man that they were adoptive caregivers for moved into the home. They felt compelled to help and have tirelessly worked to turn things around for the home’s residents and staff - all the while being amazed at the way God provides. The Hersheys noted that God continues to show everyone involved in operating Our Home of Hope that this is His project, as countless individuals act as His hands and feet. This year, a much-needed kitchen renovation was completed - taking that space from cramped and outdated to state-of-the-art. Capital improvements valued at more than $190,000 were made possible through generous contributions. Key project sponsors included Engel Architects,

Andrew Z. Burkholder Construction, The Clark Associates Charitable Foundation, and Premier Custom-Built Cabinetry. In addition, donations provided for exterior painting, replacement windows, and a new side porch and ramp. A new chair lift and the painting of the interior led to residents remarking, “We are treated like special people.” When the Hersheys asked one of the contributors, “How can we ever thank you for providing money?” his response was: “When God has blessed you, you should bless others.” A new dining area provides an open, inviting space where residents can eat and socialize, and it also has a separate medication dispensing area. New tables replaced the old flimsy tables that would shake so badly that something as simple as someone cutting their meat could cause everyone’s beverages to spill. Our Home of Hope has residents from many walks of life. Some have come from Water Street Mission and off of the street. Our Home of Hope is a resource for Lancaster County Office of Aging, area churches, and other community agencies seeking a permanent home for individuals in need. For some, the home is a last resort for a place to live. The Hersheys noted that many of the residents do not have a family member who could care for them, and some of the residents never have visitors. The residents are family to each other. Mable shared that the recent improvements to the home have helped to make the residence truly “Our Home of Hope” for the residents, some of whom have lived there for more than 15 years. It is their home, and Mable relayed that many say that it now feels like they have a new home. The residents say they truly feel that someone thought them worthy of living in a cheery, permanent home. Board members are hopeful that others will catch that vision and help with the remaining needs, which include three bathroom updates; laundry room improvements including a new ceiling, floor, and cabinets; and an office floor replacement. An annual gift to sponsor one of the 30 residents for $4,500 a year will help Our Home of Hope to operate and continue to give a home to residents who would not have another place to live. The community is invited to visit Our Home of Hope during upcoming open houses on Sundays, Aug. 4, 11, and 18, from 2 to 4 p.m. More information about the home is available at www.ourhomeofhope.com or www.facebook.com/ourhomeofhope. Financial contributions may be sent to Our Home of Hope Inc., Attn: Mable Hershey, 225 Cherry St., Columbia, PA 17547. The home will also be part of the Extraordinary Give on Friday, Nov. 22, for the first time.

outdoor activities planned,” added Keith. A picnic and at least one fishing trip were scheduled, along with the camping. The three children said they love fishing. Waiting just a short distance away, Tanya Beakes, also of Denver, and her two daughters were anxious to welcome their first Fresh Air child. Hannah Beakes, who is 11, had been communicating with Yvonne Zhuang for some time. “I am looking forward to meeting her in person and getting to know her better,” said Hannah. Tanya noted that the girls already know they have a lot in common, adding that one of their first conversations involved the details of making slime. “We both don’t like roller coasters,” noted Hannah. Tanya said that the family planned to swim, visit a local amusement park, and attend a show at a local Christian theater. “We’ll be showing her all the stuff there is to do around Lancaster County,” said Tanya. The Beakes family became interested in hosting a Fresh Air child after talking to fellow church members who recommended the experience. They met with one of the coordinators and decided to sign up. “We thought it sounded like fun,” shared Tanya. The Fresh Air Fund is a not-for-profit agency that connects thousands of children from low-income families in New York City with host families in rural, suburban, and small-town communities along the East Coast and southern Canada. Youths ages 7 to 18 stay free of charge for one or two weeks of fun and relaxation with a host family. Bus drop-offs occur several times throughout the summer in various locations. For 2019, nearly 100 children left New York City to stay with families in Lancaster County. On July 1, 26 children met their host families at the Junction Center in Manheim in addition to the Leola pickup location. Area readers who would like to host a child next summer may contact Lancaster County Fresh Air Fund representative Marcia Weaver at 717-951-8851 or fill out a form at www.freshair.org to get started. Pennsylvania clearances and other background checks may be completed through the agency. Volunteer host families may request the preferred age and gender of their Fresh Air child. Children on first-time visits are ages 7 to 12, and children reinvited by the same family may continue through age 18. According to www.freshair.org, more than 1.8 million children from New York City have participated in the cultural exchange program since it began in 1877.
Music in the Park programs will be presented weekly in the gazebo in Fuhrman Park, Rock Point Road, Maytown. On Sunday, Aug. 4, at 6:30 p.m., the program will consist of a wide variety of music presented by the Malta Band, which has performed in and around Lancaster for 60 years. The program may be canceled in the event of inclement weather.

Matthews Children’s Foundation recently presented Bible2School, based in Manheim, with a check for $1,000. Bible2School, a nondenominational, faith-based nonprofit organization, is committed to serving public school children while using the Bible as the foundation for outreach and education. Matthews Children’s Foundation of Pittsburgh is a nonprofit organization associated with Matthews Aurora Funeral Solutions. The foundation exclusively
One of the homes built was for Miss Lieu, a young widow with two children living in a mud house with a collapsed roof. She had originally approached Brittany’s Hope about needing to place her children in one of the organization’s homes for children, as she was lacking means to repair the home, pay medical bills from her husband’s illness, and cover living expenses. Instead, Brittany’s Hope was able to build Miss Lieu a new home, complete with a sturdy roof to endure the rainy season as well as a bathroom, which the old house did not have. In spite of the language barrier, Fredlund connected with Miss Lieu and her children. “The hope (Miss Lieu) had was amazing to see. When I was there, she was glowing,” Fredlund shared. “One of the translators, (Le Thi Tu) Hong, said, ‘Their lives are forever changed,’ and that really stuck with me.” Fredlund also got to meet the two children that she sponsors through the Brittany’s Hope child sponsorship program. “It was one of the highlights of my life to see those families,” described Fredlund. In the future, Fredlund would like to return to Vietnam with her colleagues and others interested in helping. “Brittany’s Hope went above and beyond. I’ve been on a lot of trips and very few of them were run as well as Brittany’s Hope,” remarked Fredlund. “My goal is to help other businesses that want to give back.” For more information on Brittany’s Hope, readers may visit www. brittanyshope.org. Registration is open for the 2019 Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk, which is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14.

international special needs adoption grants and humanitarian initiatives. “Being an adoptive mom myself, their mission obviously resonates with me,” said Fredlund. “And another thing I love about Brittany’s Hope is that every penny goes to the children and not to administrative costs.” Fredlund serves on the board of Brittany’s Hope and approached executive director Mai-Lynn Sahd about potential projects that Life Changes could help with. Sahd suggested building a house for a family in need. “It was the perfect opportunity for us as a real estate company - a perfect fit,” Fredlund said. Fredlund and her colleagues set a goal of raising $7,500 - a bit more than the approximate $5,000 needed to build one house through Brittany’s Hope in Vietnam. Through advertising the initiative on social media, sharing with clients, and participating as a team in the Brittany’s Hope 2018 Walk of Love fundraiser, Life Changes raised nearly $15,000. That meant Life Changes was able to contribute toward building homes for two families. In May, Fredlund and her husband and two adult children accompanied a group of Elizabethtown College students and professors, as well as other community members, on a trip to Vietnam to help with the building project. Sahd noted that the organization is judicious in the building process, allowing international volunteers to contribute to some parts of the project while still ensuring that the work is done by local residents so as not to take away economic opportunities. Anyone whom the organization builds a home for contributes something - whether labor, finances, or something else - toward completing the project.

Five Allstate agency owners and agency staff members recently volunteered with Aaron’s Acres, mentoring older teenagers with intellectual and developmental disabilities. Together, Allstate volunteers and the young adults planned and hosted an ice cream social for residents of Pleasant View Retirement Community. Thanks to its volunteerism, Aaron’s Acres will receive a $5,000 Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grant. Aaron’s Acres will use these funds to support its year-round therapeutic programs for children and young adults with intellectual and developmental disabilities. According to Maria Kapsak, community outreach coordinator at Aaron’s Acres, some of the funds will go toward the cost of camp for children whose families may be unable to afford it. Aaron’s Acres provides individuals with disabilities ages 5 to 21 years old with yearround therapeutically based and age-appropriate recreational programs. These programs
are directed by specially trained and certified staff members in a supportive environment and aim to enhance socialization and communication skills. Aaron’s Acres is one of thousands of organizations this year to receive Allstate Foundation Helping Hands Grants secured by agency owners, personal financial representatives and licensed sales professionals on behalf of the nonprofits where they volunteer. The grants support organizations addressing domestic violence, youth empowerment, disaster preparedness, hunger and other causes. Participating Allstate agency owners and staff members included Meredith Allen, Allstate agency staff member for Owen White Agency in Columbia; Vera Boak, Allstate agency owner in East Petersburg; Karen Hershman, Allstate agency staff member in East Petersburg; John Mellish, Allstate agency owner in Columbia; and Shelly Santoni, Allstate agency owner in Elizabethtown.
