Community Place On Washington To Launch Capital Campaign By Chelsea Peifer
Peggy McFarland estimates that for the last 20 years or so, there has been talk of the need for a building that could house all of Elizabethtown’s community service organizations in one place. “Everything is very scattered, and that makes it very difficult for clients to access everything,” explained McFarland, who serves as a clinical social worker and board chair for Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS). The goal was to find a space in town that would be walkable or easily accessible by public transportation for clients, but for years no real estate options seemed to fit that bill. Now, thanks to a collaborative effort between United Churches Elizabethtown Area (UCEA) and community members, organizations, businesses, and social service providers, that dream See Community Place pg 12
Community Place on Washington is currently undergoing renovations and will serve as a central location for Elizabethtown’s social service providers. Inviting the community to a launch event on Aug. 18 are (left photo, from left) Danielle Lindemuth, United Churches of Elizabethtown Area; Melissa Rhoads, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown; Peggy McFarland, ECHOS; Amy McEvoy, Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care; and Seema Tailor, AmeriCorps VISTA with ECHOS.

When Gary Fyke moved to Mount Joy from the greater Chicago area in 2017, he knew that he wanted to establish an F3 group in his new location. “Moving here, I couldn’t not have F3 in my life,” recalled Fyke, referring to the national network of free, peer-led workouts for men. While being part of an F3 site in his hometown, Fyke helped out with operations, leading workouts, and coordinating community involvements. Three people showed See F3 Lanco pg 8

Bookworms Invited To Frolic pg 2

By Ann Mead Ash Published By
When an organization collects 40,000 books for a sale and endeavors to sell all those books in four days, drastic sales measures may be employed. The Lancaster Mennonite Historical Society (LMHS) takes on such a challenge with by-the-box discounts beginning on the third day of its annual Bookworm Frolic. On the final day, the box price will be even lower. Although LMHS provides boxes, bookworms may bring their own. “The rule is for it to count, you have to be able to lift (the box of books) yourself,” explained Joel Nofziger, LMHS director of communications, who added jokingly, “Don’t bring a refrigerator box.” This year’s LMHS Bookworm Frolic will take place at LMHS, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster, from Wednesday, Aug. 15, through Saturday, Aug. 18. The Frolic will be open from 9 a.m. to 7 p.m. each day except for Aug. 18, when the sale will close at 4 p.m. According to Jon Weaver-Kreider, used book manager for LMHS, who is helming this year’s sale, books that have been collected for the Frolic fit into more than 20 categories. “We have a lot of theology and religion, history and politics,” said Weaver-Kreider, who added that he had counted 113 boxes of children’s books. Weaver-Kreider listed cookbooks, fiction, novels, and Christian fiction among the other categories that will be well represented at the sale. A number of foreign language books in German were also

donated for the Frolic. While most of the books available for purchase will be set up outside the LMHS building under a tent, the music section and new books, which will be sold at special discount prices during the sale, will be located inside. Weaver-Kreider noted that food at this year’s sale will be provided by food trucks. “On Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday, we will have Italian sandwiches, breakfast sandwiches, and hot dogs, and on Saturday, we will have breakfast burritos, burgers, sandwiches, saffron and jasmine rice, kabobs, and Costa Rican chicken sandwiches,” said Weaver-Kreider, who added that the food trucks were selected for the diverse menus they offer. According to Nofziger, nothing donated for the sale will end up in the trash. “At the very end of the sale, we allow organizations to bid by category,” Nofziger explained. “On Saturday, if there’s a category an organization is interested in, they can make a bid to buy all the books in that category that do not sell, and they just have to come and collect them.” Organizations that have an interest in buying a lot of books may contact WeaverKreider at 717-393-9745. Items that are not purchased are recycled to raise funds for Mennonite Central Committee Relief and Development projects. A number of volunteers help make the Bookworm Frolic a success. Weaver-Kreider calculated that 20 volunteers are needed daily to help during the sale, and that about 100 volunteers are involved in the overall event. During the year, up to 30 volunteers help sort incoming book donations. The sale attracts about 4,000 visitors annually, raising up to $40,000 for the organization. All funds raised by the event become part of the general operating budget of the historical society. Readers who would like to learn more about the historical society may visit www.lmhs.org.

The 77th annual Salunga Community Picnic will be held on Wednesday, Aug. 8, at the Hempfield Fire Department Pavilion in Salunga Park, located next to the fire station, 19 W. Main St., Landisville. The event will take place rain or shine. Festivities will begin at 4:30 p.m. with a variety of games, and a penny scramble will be held at 5:30 p.m. for children age 12 and under. Everyone will be invited to sit down for an evening meal at 6 p.m. Attendees should bring their own dinners and place settings; the picnic committee will provide chips, ice cream, and beverages. A peanut scramble and a traditional cake walk will take place following the meal, and drawings for door prizes and themed baskets will be held. There is no cost to attend the picnic, but donations will be accepted
to cover the costs associated with producing the event. The picnic committee would be especially appreciative of new volunteers to help with next year’s picnic. “We have a meeting, and you get stuff to do on your own time,” said committee member Karen Haldeman, explaining what is involved. “The more volunteers we have, the less each person has to do,” added committee member Stacey Cooper. She noted that a sign-up sheet for volunteers will be available at the upcoming picnic. Folks who would like to help with this year’s picnic may show up and ask to be put to work. Haldeman and Cooper would like to see the picnic continue, as they feel it benefits the community. “You can meet your neighbors,” Haldeman suggested. “It’s like a reunion. It brings people back together again,” Cooper added. “It’s a nice family event,

August 6th thru 11th Starts at 6:00 p.m. Nightly
created by local artist Nancy Landis. Landis resides in Elizabethtown with her husband and serves as director of the Winters Heritage House Museum. Landis has enjoyed painting numerous premium book covers as her way of assisting with the Elizabethtown Fair. “This year’s fair book cover is a tribute to the youths who raise, care for, and bring their animals to the Elizabethtown Fair each August,” Landis stated. “A casual observer may at first assume the livestock show is all about the animals in the ring. However, it is the young handlers who are the stars, exhibiting a wealth of dedication, love, knowledge, and courage as they raise, show, and sell their livestock.” “In a circle, one ring larger yet just as important, is the Elizabethtown community - families, businesses, and organizations that encourage, support, and celebrate our agricultural heritage,” Landis continued. The original cover painting will be auctioned off at 9 p.m. Additional items will include floral arrangements in dated crocks designed by local florists. Proceeds from the baked goods and arts and crafts auctions will benefit the Elizabethtown Fair. Arts and crafts auction donations are still being sought. Individuals who are interested in donating an item may contact Darlene Halterman at 717-3670108 or drop off a donation at the Elizabethtown Fair office between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday, Aug. 18. For more details on the Elizabethtown Fair, readers may visit http://etownfair.org. Contest and entry information is also listed in the Elizabethtown Fair Premium Book, copies of which are available at Brandt’s Farm Supply, the Elizabethtown Borough office, Darrenkamp’s Elizabethtown Market, Groff’s Meats, White Oak Mills, and the Winters Heritage House Museum.

The members of the Baba Nyumbani Children’s Performing Group will be traveling from Kitale, Kenya, to the United States for a special performance as part of “Pamoja: An Evening in Kenya” on Thursday, Aug. 9, at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim. The family-friendly event, which is open to the public, is being hosted by the Burkholder Family Foundation in conjunction with Horizon: Empower the Orphaned, a Lancaster-based nonprofit organization committed to empowering orphaned children to self-sustainability through a micro community model.
Admission is free; however, reservations are requested and may be completed at www.empowerthe orphaned.org/pamoja or by calling 717-390-9950. Pamoja means “together” in Swahili, and the evening is designed to create a shared experience of praise, dance, and song as the 15 members of the Baba Nyumbani Children’s Performing Group take the stage. Christine M. Schneider of Horizon said that the group is composed of youths ranging in age from 12 to 19 from the Baba Nyumbani Micro Community. Guests will have the opportunity to hear the orphaned children’s stories of rescue, restoration, and empowerment. A catered hors d’oeuvre reception from 5:30 to 7 p.m. will provide time for guests to interact with the children and to

experience a bit of what life is like in the Baba Nyumbani Micro Community through virtual reality goggles. “A micro community creates an authentic family support system for children who lost their family - a place where orphaned children can experience love and support with house moms and dads to help guide them through life while they pursue their vocational or academic dreams to successful independence,” Schneider explained. The program will begin at 7:15 p.m. and conclude by 9 p.m. A freewill offering will be received to benefit Horizon: Empower the Orphaned. A matching contribution will be made for up to $50,000. Child sponsorship opportunities will also be available. Horizon’s sponsorship program allows individuals to make a monthly financial investment that will help to meet a child’s food, shelter, health care, education, and wellness needs through a holistic care approach and micro community model. Sponsors receive a child profile, letters from their child, and updates on the impact of their financial support, as well as access to a personal online interface to communicate with their child and offer encouragement. According to Schneider, Horizon was founded in 2004 by a group of entrepreneurial philanthropists determined to solve the problem of ineffective institutional orphan care. Horizon aims to empower orphaned children to long-term sustainability with the goal of permanently breaking the cycle of poverty. “Our vision is to radically transform the way orphaned children are cared for by expanding our micro community model to countries around the world,” stated Schneider. To learn more about Horizon: Empower the Orphaned and the stories of the children in the Baba Nyumbani Children’s Performing Group, readers may visit www.empowertheorphaned.org.

F3 stands for Fitness, Fellowship, and Faith. Although the organization is not specifically affiliated with a church, Fyke said many of those who attend the workouts are involved in a church of their own. “Our mission is to plant, grow, and serve small workout groups for men for the invigoration of male community leadership,” stated Fyke. According to Fyke, the F3 founders came up with the idea when they noticed a strong lack of male community. “This provides an opportunity to get together with like-minded guys to become a better version of themselves,” Fyke said. Each workout ends with a Circle of Trust. “This is the time where PAX share what’s going on in their lives - the good, the bad, and the ugly,” Fyke said. “What we are going through, more than likely somebody else has gone through and (that) provides an opportunity for additional support. We lift these up in prayer. If you aren’t a believer, that’s OK; you can still be there to support your fellow man.” Another aspect of F3 that Fyke enjoys is choosing nicknames for each other. Fyke is known as Sunspot, and other monikers among the group include Eagle, the Fridge, Garden State, and Skater. “F3 is what you make out of it. If you just want the free workout, that’s OK; however, once you (show up) for a workout, you will see we are more than a workout group,” remarked Fyke. To learn more, readers may visit http://f3mustard seeds.com/f3lanco/ or www. f3nation.com. Interested individuals may email f3lanco@gmail.com with questions.

up to the very first F3 Lanco workout on Oct. 21, 2017, and since then the gathering has grown to approximately 14 regular attendees. Men of all ages are invited to participate in F3 Lanco, which meets from 7 to 8 a.m. every Saturday at Rapho Township Community Park, 960 Strickler Road, Mount Joy. The free workouts are held outdoors, rain or shine. Participants should dress for the weather and bring water and work gloves. “The workouts are all peer-led, meaning the guys take turns each week on leading the group,” explained Fyke. “When you first start, you won’t lead for a while until you are comfortable and ready to do so. We will work with every guy to ensure they are ready.” Fyke said the workouts are considered boot camp style, mainly because the group counts in cadence to each of the sessions. Body weight exercises make up a bulk of the time, including jumping jacks, mountain climbers, squats, burpees, push-ups, lunges, bear crawls, planks, and more. “It’s different every week because a different PAX (person in attendance) leads, and each person brings their own flavor to it,” said Fyke. “We do have bricks and cinder blocks for weights that we will use as well to help increase the intensity.” “We have guys of all abilities there. There is no physical fitness requirement for F3,” added Fyke. “We leave no man behind and will always encourage you to become a better version of yourself. Part of F3 is that we work together because you are only as strong as your weakest link. So we want to make sure every link is as strong as possible so they are better for their family, the community, and themselves.”

Charity Ride Makes Local Stops The Kyle Petty Charity Ride Across America raised $1.3 million during its recent 24th Anniversary Ride. Funds raised directly benefit Victory Junction, a camp dedicated to providing life-changing camping experiences for children with chronic or life-threatening illnesses. The ride’s donation will support maintenance programs, building projects and camperships. For the first time since 2011, former NASCAR driver and TV racing analyst Kyle Petty brought his annual motorcycle ride back to the East Coast. On May 5, Petty embarked on 1,200-mile route, leading 225 participants from Portland, Maine, to Greensboro, N.C. Traveling through nine states in seven days, the ride included various stops and
sights on its themed “Americana Tour.” Local stops included the Eden Resort in Lancaster and Manheim Pennsylvania Auto Auction. The ride finished with a finale celebration at Victory Junction in North Carolina. Victory Junction has served as the ride’s primary beneficiary since its establishment by Petty and his family in 2004 in honor of his late son, Adam. Since 1995, more than 8,400 riders have logged more than 12 million cumulative motorcycle miles and raised $19.3 million for Victory Junction and other children’s charities. Funds were gathered from fans along the route as part of the ride’s “Small Change. Big Impact.” program, as well as donations made by sponsors, organizations, and the riders

themselves. Team members in Manheim raised $84,437 for the ride. This year’s ride also featured several celebrity riders, including NASCAR Hall of Famer Richard Petty; NASCAR legends Harry Gant, Hershel McGriff, and Donnie Allison; current NASCAR driver David Ragan; former NASCAR driver and TV racing analyst Ricky Craven; former NFL players Herschel Walker and George Rogers; and NASCAR personalities Krista Voda, Rutledge Wood, and Rick Allen. Susquehanna Heritage and the Lancaster County Chapter of Delta Waterfowl will present the third annual Conejohela Flats Duck Decoy Contest from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 4, at the Columbia Crossing River Trails Center, 41 Walnut St., Columbia. The event is free and open to the public. Matt Kneisley, who serves as the Northeast Atlantic regional director for Delta Waterfowl, noted that the event is not just fun for waterfowlers, outdoors enthusiasts, and craftsmen, but also for families and individuals of all ages and interests. This year’s event has expanded to include a dog demonstration and boat show. Dog demonstrations will begin at 9 a.m. and continue throughout the day. A professional trainer from the Wilkes-Barre area will present demonstrations with American water spaniels, Labrador retrievers, and other species trained to hunt in the water and in fields. “We’ll be running them on ground and in the water. The nice part is that we’ll have so many dogs that we can rotate them so the dogs won’t get tired,” said Kneisley, noting that people may be surprised to learn about the many things a hunting dog can be trained to do and the time that can take. Duck hunting boats dating back to the 1940s will be on display on shore for attendees to see, and owners will share about the history the boats played in hunting the Susquehanna River. Rollover boats and bushwhack or sculling rigs will be among those on display. According to Kneisley, decoys have played a large role in the history of Lancaster and York counties as far as how the area was hunted. “Columbia has been well-versed in duck hunting for years,” added Kneisley. Registration for the duck decoy contest will open at

10 a.m., and judging will begin at 11 a.m. Decoys will float in the Susquehanna River approximately 20 feet from the shoreline, where judging will be conducted. “This is a different style competition, because the birds are out into the water,” explained Kneisley. “They have to judge the birds in a live situation.” Carvers from Pennsylvania and several surrounding states will participate. Entries must be original handmade waterfowl-related decoys made of wood, cork, or foam. Each decoy must float upright and have a 12-foot string and a weight attached. There is a set fee to enter one decoy, and the fee will be lower for each entry thereafter. Individuals may enter as many decoys as they wish. An awards ceremony is planned for approximately 3 p.m. The contest will feature a division for adults and another for youths age 16 and under. The top three winners in each species for each division will receive a ribbon, and the best of show winners for Diver, Puddler, and Confidence classes will each receive an additional prize. Food vendors will sell chicken tenders, fried chicken sandwiches, french fries, snow cones, cupcakes, and more. Additionally, the “River Crossing” exhibit inside the River Trails Center will be viewable for those interested in river transportation history related to canals, arks, and bridge history. Columbia Crossing manager Hope Byers described the Conejohela Flats as an area with lowlying islands and mud flats that has been designated by the National Audubon Society as an Important Bird Area. More than 250 species of birds have been identified and seen at the flats. Water birds, wading birds, and waterfowl use the area regularly, while large flocks of tundra swans and snow geese congregate seasonally in late winter and early spring. Byers said the flats are a popular spot for water fowling and paddling. To learn more, readers may call Kneisley at 717-666-4595 or visit www.lancasterpadelta.org.

is taking root. Earlier this year, UCEA purchased the brick building at 61 E. Washington St., Elizabethtown, that formerly belonged to St. Peter Parochial School. Once permits have been approved and renovations completed, the property will be known as Community Place on Washington. Danielle Lindemuth of UCEA said that an official move-in date has yet to be determined. Space will be rented out to agencies including ECHOS, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, Elizabethtown Area HUB, Bear Bags, and Elizabethtown Area Communities That Care (EACTC). It will also house a clothing bank and offer services such as job skills training, counseling, GED and ESL classes, PA 211: Community Resources, the United Way’s Volunteer Income Tax Assistance (VITA), and more. “It’s great because it’s a community effort and not just one agency,” McFarland emphasized. “It’s really going to help our clients. The social problems are still here - drug issues, homelessness, hunger, lack of child care - but we’re going to try to maximize our community resources so that we can better serve people.” Melissa Rhoads, director of the Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, is thrilled about the way the new space will enable her to better serve and direct clients. “Now I’ll be able to say, ‘If you didn’t know about ECHOS, they’re right upstairs,’” Rhoads remarked. A portion of the money needed for the project has already been raised and donated by the UCEA. According to McFarland, approximately $1.5 million is still needed

The Mount Joy Lions Club has closed its swimming pool on Fairview Street after 54 years of continuous operation. For most of those years, the pool sponsored a summer swim team. With the closing of the pool, the swim team faced an uncertain future. Through the efforts of the Mount Joy Lions swim team parents group and support from various community organizations, the swim team will continue practicing at Elizabethtown College and will swim all its meets at the scheduled opponent’s pool. A recent donation of $2,500 from the Mount Joy Lions Club to the swim team was intended to help defray the cost of operating as a team without a permanent home pool.
The Mount Joy Lions Club recently donated $2,500 to the Lions swim team to help defray the cost of operating as a team without a home pool. Participating in the check presentation were (from left) Tim Liebfried, president of the swim team parents organization; Leonard Smith, Mount Joy Lions Club; Andrew Foltz, swim team head coach; Harry Goehring, Mount Joy Lions Club; Maria Wassell, Mount Joy Lions Club; Charles Peterman, Mount Joy Lions Club; and Ree Houck, member of the swim team parents board.
