ECHOS Marks Fourth Year, Receives Funding

Leigh Ann Farling (left), social services director, and Deb Jones, executive director, celebrated the fourth anniversary of Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) on July 1.

Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services (ECHOS) celebrated its fourth anniversary on July 1 and also announced it is a first-time recipient of funding from the PPL Foundation. The PPL Foundation funds are dedicated to strengthening the services offered through ECHOS’ Enrichment Services at Community Place on Washington, where clients have access to an array of resources designed to improve soft skills, engagement, and community participation. The ECHOS team works with clients, side-by-side, to provide individualized and intensive, solution focused care. The PPL Foundation’s support helps ensure the continuation of services, community education, and client assistance. Through the PPL Foundation funds, PPL Corporation and PPL Electric seek to partner with ECHOS to create stability among northwest Lancaster County residents.

ECHOS traces its roots to an emergency winter shelter that began in 2015. From this effort, ECHOS has become a full-time social services agency, serving the most vulnerable community members and addressing the community’s unique needs. Since its inception, ECHOS has served more than 2,000 individuals. Specifically, ECHOS provided more than 2,245 hours of individualized counseling last fiscal year, totaling a value of $143,712 free to its clients. ECHOS thanked the original community leaders who spearheaded the formation of ECHOS. In response to the local need witnessed during the first shelter season, Jane Cavender, Peggy McFarland, Rick Basom, Jan WellsDavis, and Deb Jones joined forces to request seed money, establishing ECHOS in 2016 with Elizabethtown College as its fiscal agent. Now, ECHOS is financially independent and has See ECHOS pg 2

Parade, Ceremony Honor Mohr FIA Provides Medical Care, Food On 100th Birthday ETN

Harold Arthur Mohr Sr. of Bainbridge celebrated his 100th birthday on July 21. He was honored on this date with a parade past his home and a ceremony recognizing his service in the military. The parade, organized by Harold’s church, Word of Life Chapel, included approximately 30 cars and big rigs, numerous fire trucks and police cars, and 20 motorcycles. Harold sat by the curb, smiling, waving, and greeting participants. See 100th Birthday pg 2

Friends In Action (FIA) International, a nonprofit organization located in Middletown, recently partnered with pastors in Bolivia to provide COVID-19 relief to indigenous people groups. Aid has included medical care, medical supplies and food. FIA uses infrastructure projects as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups. Recent projects aided residents of the hundreds of tiny villages along the

coasts of the Amazon River, which are especially vulnerable to COVID-19. For most of the villagers, their town hospital has only 35 beds and one ventilator and is a multiple-day journey by boat and on foot. Additionally, some villagers travel two days from their remote locations to find medicines such as acetaminophen. FIA’s field leaders, Donna and Gary Ferch, reported that close to 90% of FIA’s co-workers in the area have contracted the virus. See FIA pg 5

Thanks to Both Hands, a nonprofit organization dedicated to serving orphans, widows and Christian adoptive families, Tim and Tiffany Miller of Mount Joy will receive financial aid for their upcoming adoption and a local widow will be given assistance with maintenance projects around her home. As part of the Both Hands program, adoptive families are asked to coordinate a service project at a widow’s home. In turn, the family receives sponsorships that are used to finance the cost of the adoption. The Both Hands name symbolizes one hand for the widow and the other hand for the orphans. On Saturday, Aug. 8, the Miller family and a team of volunteers will work at the home of a widow who resides in Ephrata. Her husband died unexpectedly this spring after being in a car accident and then contracting the COVID-19 infection. Her home is in need of some repairs, including landscaping, painting, minor electrical work and general tasks that are difficult for her to complete. See Both Hands pg 6

One of the pastors participating in the relief efforts was pastor Saul. Wearing his mask and gloves, Saul began knocking on doors and distributing food and medical supplies funded in part by FIA donors. Going door-to-door to indigenous populations in the small towns and villages near Guayaramerin, Saul shared the Gospel and prayed with many villagers who already had COVID19 and others who were afraid of catching it. Saul later contracted COVID-19 and experienced complications from the virus and diabetes. Among FIA’s efforts in Bolivia is El Misionero, a riverboat used to take medical personnel and the Gospel into unreached villages accessible only by the Amazon River. FIA began building the boat more than a decade ago, and each year, doctors, nurses, and dentists volunteer to treat more than 1,100 villagers for dewormings, prenatal care, minor surgeries, and vision and dental needs using the boat. One helper who worked on the boat was Medardo Rodriguez Dorado. Dorado championed the medical ministry for years by removing rotten wood, milling new timbers, and repairing the boat so it could be sailed it farther into the Ama-

zon jungle to reach additional villagers. Dorado was well-known by other villagers for being proficient with a chainsaw. He and his wife contracted COVID19, and Medardo died from the disease in early June. FIA sent funds to help to provide food and medical care for Medardo’s widow and other widows. El Misionero’s first captain, pastor Manuel Bravo, also contracted COVID-19. Bravo is a national pioneer missionary who has also served as ministry outreach director partnering with FIA and an organization of seven evangelical Bible churches in Guayaramerin. Though in a high-risk category, he began moving toward recovery as a result of treatments provided by a team of volunteer doctors and nurses from El Misionero using medicines and intravenous therapy funded by donors to FIA. As the need is great, several churches and individuals have agreed to provide matching funds for donations up to $7,500. To donate before Saturday, Aug. 15, readers may visit www.fiaintl.org and select Bolivia Where Needed Most. Gifts will be used to provide intraveous therapy, breathing treatments, and medicine for those who are sick, as well as rice and beans for grieving families.

The registration deadline is Friday, Aug. 28. League play will be from 6:30 to 9:30 p.m. on Monday to Thursday evenings from Tuesday, Sept. 8, through early November. Each team will play a 10game schedule with playoffs. There is a team entry fee. GEARS will offer three tennis camps on Monday to Thursday, Aug. 10 to 13, at the tennis courts at Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS), 600 E. High St. Brenda McBride, PTR certified instructor, will teach the appropriate skill and age levels for the camps. Beginner Tennis Camp, for children ages 4 to 7 of all skill levels, will be from 9 to 9:45 a.m.; Intermediate Tennis Camp, for children ages 7 to 12 of all skill levels, will be from 5:15 to 6:45 p.m.; and Teen Tennis Camp, for current or aspiring high school tennis players ages 13 to 17, will be from 7 to 8:30 p.m. A Girls’ Lacrosse Camp for girls in grades three through nine will be offered on Monday to Friday, Aug. 10 to 14, from 4 to 6 p.m. at the EAHS Field 1. Campers will seek to improve on their fundamentals of the game while playing fun lacrosse games with the high school players. Instruction will be led by varsity coach Benson. A T-shirt is included in fee.

Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, 110 Durlach Road, Ephrata, will hold a drivethrough chicken barbecue fundraiser for Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (MHNRC) on Friday, Aug. 14, from 4 to 6:30 p.m. in the parking lot. The meal will include a barbecued half-chicken, a baked potato, a roll and butter, and applesauce. Due to the current COVID-19 restrictions, volunteers serving meals will follow CDC guidelines. Mount Hope, located in rural Rapho Township, is a 50-bed skilled nursing facility and rehabilitation center that serves seniors regardless of their ability to pay. Proceeds will go toward Mount Hope’s Coronavirus Assistance Fund to help cover the unanticipated increased cost of safely providing care for residents, including

help with purchasing personal protective equipment, covering unforeseen expenses in additional building and cleaning supplies, easing the financial shortfall from reduced revenue, providing for unexpected costs as staff is needed to fulfill roles once held by volunteers, and acquiring technology to combat residents’ social isolation and provide a positive family connection. The per-meal cost is $12. Preorders will be taken, and meals will be saved under the name provided when ordered. All payments are to be made when picking up the meals. No handling of money will occur during the food pickup. A drop box will be provided for customers to leave payment in the form of cash or of checks made payable to “Mount Hope NRC.” To preorder, readers may call Kris Wilson at 717-682-8026 or email advancement@mthope nazarene.org by Sunday, Aug. 9.

After their application was approved by Both Hands, the Millers were asked to find a local widow in need. “We connected with (the widow in Ephrata) through a friend of a friend,” Tiffany noted. “Thankfully, she was the first widow we met and it all worked out. She is so grateful.” Both Hands, a Tennessee-based charity, was founded by JT Olson, who was taking part in a golf fundraiser. He sent out letters asking for sponsorships. “A friend wrote back on the letter and said, ‘Maybe if you were working on a widow’s house, I would sponsor you, but you are just playing golf,’” Tiffany said. “He decided he had a big heart for adopting and he and his family adopted as well, and he (formed) this organization.” Tiffany and Tim currently have three sons - Cameron, 8; Lincoln, 6; and Theo, 3, who was adopted from South Korea in 2018. They are currently waiting to be matched with a boy or girl from South Korea. “We’re hoping we will get a match soon,” said TIffany. “Once we are matched it’s about a year until we (can) travel and bring the child home.” In preparation for the upcoming service project, the Millers recruited about 30

to 40 friends and family members to help out with the work. “Our church, Victory Church in Lancaster, is also involved, and people are bringing friends that are really handy to come help us out,” said Tiffany. “Local businesses donated all of the supplies that we are going to use.” Donating businesses include Home Depot in Lancaster, Longenecker’s Hardware in Manheim, Dave’s Roll Off Service in Ephrata, Advanced Trim Specialties in Kinzers and Buck’s Lawn Care Service in Lititz. “We’re planning to work from at least 8 a.m. to 4 p.m., depending on how long it takes to get stuff done,” Tiffany pointed out. “We’ve been there three times to get measurements and figure out what supplies we need.” The couple also sent out sponsorship letters asking for donations to help out with adoption costs. “Both Hands gives you all the resources that you need to get the project going, but the way to raise money is to gather a team of people to help us and we, along with the group, sent out sponsorship letters,” Tiffany said. “All the money that comes in from sponsorship letters goes directly toward a taxdeductible fund that Both Hands sets up for us to pay for adoption expenses.” The Millers also hope to raise awareness about the Both Hands organization. “We just loved the concept of it and wanted to be able to share it with other people and be able to fundraise this way, too,” Tiffany said. For more details, including how to support the project, readers may visit www.BothHands.org/project/miller-9069.

Local couple Linda and Philip Malin has been photographing local furry and feathered family members for 30 years. However, the coronavirus pandemic challenged their business, which involved pet photography home visits and pet portrait events at local pet stores. They had to find a way to survive this crisis, so Linda came up with the idea to put pet photos on masks. Pet owners are invited to send the Malins an image by email or mail and then place an order for a Furry Face Mask at www.LindaAndPhilipMalin.com. Contact information for submitting photos is available on the aforementioned website. The Malins will tweak the photo, print it on a mask and mail it directly to the customer. Pet owners can have a photo of their bird, cat, dog or reptile heat-sealed and imprinted on a comfortable, two-ply, 100% polyester mask that can be washed and air dried. Individuals may also ask for a breed-specific pet from the Malins’ stock photography. While the Malins are used to working with pet expressions, the Furry Face Mask is not limited to pets. Some customers have designed their own artwork to put on their masks. For example, a gardener put her flowers on her mask, a groom put his new bride on his mask, a golfer put “hole-in-one” and the date on his mask and a musician put his tuba on a mask. Artists of all ages have individualized a logo to wear while at work. Creative dragons and unicorns are a common image for children’s face masks. For more information, readers may visit the previously mentioned website or www.facebook.com/malinscreative consultants. A fee is charged per mask; shipping is free.
