Elizabethtown Team Hosts Little Leaguers From China By Chelsea Peifer

As Elizabethtown 10U All-Star baseball team head coach Mason Shank said, “It’s not every day that you get to play against a team from China.” On July 31, though, his players had that very opportunity. Troy Steffy, Lancaster Barnstormers assistant coach and baseball operations manager, contacted the Elizabethtown team as he was scheduling exhibition games for the Shenzhen Cyclones, a Little League baseball team visiting from Shenzhen, China. The Cyclones, a team of 10- and 11-year-olds, trained with the Barnstormers from July 26 to Aug. 1 as part of a 24-day Sino-U.S.A. Baseball Summer Camp hosted by Shenzhen MY Sports Education and multiple baseball organizations and partners on the East Coast.

Hundreds of people packed the stands for the evening game at Wenger Field on Poplar Street in Elizabethtown to show support for their hometown players and welcome the international players and coaches. Prior to the game, the national anthems from both countries were played. “That reception from the Elizabethtown community was

incredible,” Steffy said. “I can’t explain the energy that was there and the passion they have for baseball and their players.” In the end, the Elizabethtown team won 12-2. “The beginning of the game was pretty competitive. (Our players) were extremely excited and nervous, but they loosened up as the game went on,” said Shank. See Baseball pg 7

On July 31, the Elizabethtown 10U All-Star baseball team played an exhibition game against the Shenzhen Cyclones, a Little League team from China visiting the United States for 24 days of summer baseball camp. Following the game, the Elizabethtown team treated the visitors to hamburgers, hot dogs, and Italian ice.

The Edible Classroom Wraps Up Fruitful Summer By Chelsea Peifer

Just like spring, summer, and fall keep area farmers going nonstop, those seasons are busiest for The Edible Classroom as staff and volunteers share hands-on gardening lessons with

students throughout Lancaster County. From July 29 to Aug. 2, students from the School District of Lancaster (SDoL) met in the garden at Hamilton Elementary School for a Garden to Table camp led by Beth Horst, who along with Grace Julian co-founded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in 2018 in an effort to teach more students about growing their own See The Edible Classroom pg 2

Plans are underway for a ninehole disc golf course to be installed throughout Little Chiques Park, 229 Park Ave., Mount Joy. Local residents Ben Heisey and Dave Christian had the idea for the course and consulted with Travis Dombach, a council member with Lancaster Area Frisbee Sports (LAFS), about potential course designs for the park, as Dombach was a key designer for the Ship Rock Disc Golf Course in Willow Street and the Muddy Run Disc Golf Course in Holtwood. The trio proposed the idea to the Mount Joy Borough Public Works Committee in September 2018 and the Mount Joy Borough Council in October 2018, and the idea was met with unanimous approval at both meetings. The new course will join several others located throughout the county, such as the one at Buchmiller Park (pictured).

food and to partner with schools to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. Camp mornings kicked off with “Garden Yoga” as campers practiced stretching into poses, followed by plenty of time in the garden exploring and tending the plants. Each day featured a garden-related topic with a readaloud story and activities, games, and crafts. “ We were talking about pests and beneficials,” said Jameer, one of the campers. “And we talked about how you should not kill pollinators like bees and butterflies because they carry the pollen to the seed.” Plus, campers got the chance to harvest fresh items to prepare food to try like salsa, carrot cake pancakes, sautéed potatoes, and potato salad. “I’m just thrilled that these kids got to experience this, because many of them don’t have gardens or yards at home,” shared Horst. Some of the other summer offerings by The Edible Classroom included garden camps and enrichment programs at Park Elementary School in Columbia Borough School District, Brecht Elementary School in Manheim Township School District, Conestoga Elementary School in Penn Manor School District, Manor Township Playground in the Parks, Teen Central in Manheim, Wee Care Day School in East Petersburg, and Power Scholars Academy offered through SDoL and the Lancaster Family YMCA. Julian noted that in the fall and spring The Edible Classroom helps schools throughout the county with planning curriculum-based garden lessons: “All of which teach them how to plant, tend, harvest, and enjoy the fruits of their labor,” she explained.

On Saturday, Sept. 21, The Edible Classroom will host its second annual Watermelon Blaster 5K and Kids’ Fun Run for the community at 8:30 a.m. at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. All participants will receive a watermelon blaster: a favorite smoothie recipe of The Edible Classroom’s founders that combines fresh and frozen watermelon with a splash of lime. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female finishers in three age categories. To register in advance, readers may visit www.theedibleclassroom.org/5k-registration. Those who register by Friday, Sept. 6, will receive a discounted rate and a T-shirt. Packet pickup will be offered from 6 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 20, at Manor Middle School. Event-day registration and packet pickup will open at 7 a.m. The Kids’ Fun Run, free and open to children age 12 and younger, will begin at approximately 9:30 a.m. Other festivities on race day will include live music by Dreadnought Brigade and a watermelon seed spitting contest for children and adults, where the winners will receive watermelons. A portion of every Watermelon Blaster registration fee will go into a School Garden Grant fund. Grants will be awarded to three schools to use toward The Edible Classroom’s programming to establish or sustain a school garden in the 2019-20 academic year. To learn more about how to get involved, readers may search for “The Edible Classroom” on Facebook or visit www.theedibleclassroom.org. Volunteers are welcome to serve in various capacities.

Disc Golf from pg 1 Heisey and Christian anticipate that the course will be installed between the fall of 2019 and spring of 2020, with the help of donations from local businesses and community members to cover the cost of equipment, signs, and installation. The course will primarily be constructed by community volunteers and LAFS members, with some tasks - like pouring the concrete tee pads - requiring hired help. Heisey said that the total estimated cost of the project is between $5,000 and $6,000, which organizers are working to raise through sponsorships from local businesses and individuals. Prominent sponsors will receive recognition on the course overview sign and at the individual tee signs. Once funds are raised, Heisey said the construction of the course at Little Chiques Park should take no more than two months to complete. Individuals, organizations,

and businesses interested in donating toward the project may email bsheisey@gmail.com for more information or pick up a sponsorship form at the Mount Joy Borough Office, 21 E. Main St., Mount Joy. Heisey noted that disc golf is a sport growing rapidly in the nation and particularly in southcentral Pennsylvania. The 2019 Amateur Disc Golf World Championships were held from July 20 to 27 across 10 courses in York and Lancaster counties, drawing nearly 700 competitors from 11 countries, 43 states, and three provinces, according to www.pdga.com. “Adding a new course (in Mount Joy) is a great way to grow the sport of disc golf and expand the availability of the sport to people in new areas,” said Heisey, who has been playing the sport for seven years and has been a member of LAFS for five years. In addition to Ship Rock and

Muddy Run, other disc golf courses in the county are located at Herr Park, Buchmiller Park, Overlook Park, and Manor Township Park in Lancaster, along with Roland Park in Akron. “Disc golf is a fun, familyfriendly, and cost-effective way for people in the community to spend time outdoors,” Heisey described. LAFS conducts weekly league events that can draw more than 50 players on any given day, as well as tournaments throughout the summer, Heisey said. LAFS is dedicated to the well-being of its courses and the parks that hold them, operating according to its mission: “To grow and improve the sport of disc golf in Lancaster County and the surrounding areas by bringing together new and experienced players, promoting a friendly environment for club members, and bridging the gap between Lancaster Disc Golf Club and the community.” For more information on LAFS, readers may visit http://lafs -disc-golf.squarespace.com/.

The company is also partnering with Google Maps to make it easier for consumers to find yearround medication disposal options. CVS Health’s commitment to helping prevent and address prescription drug misuse extends to community education and increasing access to the opioid overdose-reversal drug naloxone. The company’s Pharmacists Teach program brings CVS pharmacists to schools across the country to talk to students and parents about the dangers of prescription drug abuse. More than 507,000 students across the country, including over 30,700 in Pennsylvania, have participated in the program. General information about CVS Pharmacy is available at www.cvshealth.com.

CVS Pharmacy, the retail division of CVS Health, has announced the expansion of its safe medication disposal program in Pennsylvania, adding disposal units in 80 CVS Pharmacy stores in communities across the state by the end of the year. This is in addition to the existing 26 units already installed, bringing the in state total to 106. Promptly disposing unused medications can help reduce the potential that they will be diverted or misused. Nationwide, the company has installed more than 1,300 in-store safe medication disposal units. The company has also donated more than 970 units to community organizations such as police departments, including 135 units in Pennsylvania. Through this national effort, 408 metric tons, or around 900,000 pounds, of unwanted medication has been collected, including over 41,000 pounds in Pennsylvania alone. CVS Pharmacy plans to roll out

Baseball from pg 1 After the game, the Elizabethtown team treated the visitors to hamburgers and hot dogs, and the Elizabethtown Rita’s Italian Ice provided Italian ice. “The players (from China) loved it. They felt like rock stars,” Steffy said. “(Our players) were amazed by how respectful and nice the kids on the other team were. There was no language barrier because all of the players spoke perfect English,” Shank noted. “It was a neat experience for them to see that baseball is baseball no matter what side of the world you’re on.” Assistant coaches for the Elizabethtown 10U All-Star team include Ed Cornelius, Ryan Torborg, Dustin Shireman, and Shaun Kroeck. Steffy explained that during their time in Lancaster, the Cyclone players did the same workouts the Barnstormers players did and even used the visiting team locker room at the stadium. “We treated them like big leaguers,” said Steffy. “Since they were here last year, their skill level had improved dramatically.” After their time in Lancaster, the Cyclones headed to Staten Island, N.Y., to train with NY Prospects Baseball Inc. and Athe-

lite Player Development from Aug. 2 to 6. The team also enjoyed a road trip to Cooperstown, N.Y., home of the National Baseball Hall of Fame. From Wednesday to Sunday, Aug. 7 to 11, the Cyclones are scheduled to participate in a tournament in Easley, S.C., hosted by USSSA Travel Baseball and All League Baseball. Former Major League Baseball player Jeff Schaefer will host the team in Cary, N.C., from Monday to Thursday, Aug. 12 to 15, and the trip will conclude with a visit to watch opening day of the 2019 Little League World Series in Williamsport, Pa., on Thursday, Aug. 15, and the New York Yankees versus the Cleveland Indians at Yankee Stadium in the Bronx, N.Y. on Friday, Aug. 16. “This is the second consecutive year we are hosting baseball summer camp in the U.S.A., and we believe it is a unique opportunity for young baseball players in China to experience the most authentic American-style baseball,” stated James Lin, founder of MY Sports Education. “We hope to use sports, especially baseball, for kids in both countries to understand each other’s culture and social background.”

4-H Club Makes Parade Float The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club recently made a float for a local parade. At the first 4-H meeting of the year, club leader Katina Musser let club members know that a chairperson for the club float committee was needed. A recent transfer to the club, Meghan Becker, decided to take on that role. Meghan is a 16-year-old who, until a few years ago, lived in Dublin, Ireland. This was her first time participating in a community club, but she has an interest in art, along with experience organizing events through her church, where her dad is a pastor. After sketching a design for the float, Meghan sent a picture to Musser, and thus started the journey of creating the float. As

the only member of the committee, Meghan took on most parts of the leadership process. Her grandfather helped to build parts of the project based on her ideas. Many other members of the club helped as well, including Xavier, who helped with much of the pre-planning, and Jenavieve, who showed up to every work day. The main concept behind the float was to show off different projects that 4-H offers, such as agriculture and woodworking. The concept was well received by the parade audience, and the club hopes to use it in the future at other parades. 4-H is a youth education program of Penn State Extension. It is a nonformal program for youths between the ages of 8 and

18, and a 4-H Cloverbud Program is also available for youths ages 5 to 8. 4-H extends the knowledge base of the land grant university system to youths to help them develop life skills in citizenship

and leadership. For more information on available 4-H clubs and programs, readers may contact the Lancaster Penn State Extension Office at 717-3946851 or LancasterExt@psu.edu.

Mount Joy 4-H Community Club members (from left) Charles Williams of Manheim, Faith Musser of Elizabethtown, Janelle Harnish of Elizabethtown, and Katurah Martin of Manheim showcased various types of projects available through 4-H as part of the club’s parade float.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster and Lebanon will launch its fall season on Monday, Sept. 9. Approximately 900 girls ages 8 to 14 on more than 66 teams will participate in the 10-week program. Hundreds of volunteer coaches facilitate the curriculum, and their efforts are sponsored by LOA Orthodontics. The program will prepare the girls for the Girls on the Run 5K, which will take place on Saturday, Nov. 23, at Millersville University at 9 a.m. The event will be presented by Orthopedic Associates of Lancaster. In striving to provide nutritious food to neighbors in need, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank operates an extensive Fresh Express Program that directly supports low-income communities. Since these products have a short shelf life, the Food Bank collaborates with partner agencies to distribute more than 10 million pounds of fresh produce and dairy products received annually from both local and national donors directly to neighbors in need. This year-round program provides nutritious foods to more than 14,000 individuals at 99 distribution sites in 21 counties. Depending on the harvest season, volunteers distribute a variety of perishable items such as potatoes, onions, lettuce, apples, strawberries and yogurt. Last year, nearly 10.2 million pounds of produce and 2.2 million servings of fresh milk were distributed. The Fresh Express Program follows income guidelines to determine eligibility. There are currently five distribution sites at different times of the month in Lancaster County, and preregistration is required. Distributions will take place as follows: fourth Friday of the month from 3:30 to 5:30 p.m. at Park Elementary School, 50 S. Sixth St., Columbia (717-6841497); second Saturday of the month from 10 a.m. to noon at The Factory Ministries, 3293 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster (717-687-9594); Wednesdays from 9:30 to 11 a.m. at the Jean Polite Food Bank at Bethel AME Church, 512 E. Strawberry St., Lancaster (717-393-8379); second and fourth Wednesdays of the month from 2 to 6 p.m. at the Crispus Attucks Community Center, 401 Howard Ave., Lancaster (717-394-6604); and the second Friday of the month from 10:45 a.m. to noon at the Spanish American Civic Association, 545 Pershing Ave., Lancaster (717-397-6267). In June, 13 Civil Air Patrol Squadron 307 cadets graduated from Pennsylvania Wing of the Civil Air Patrol Cadet Training Schools held at the Fort Indiantown Gap training facilities. The Pennsylvania Wing of the Civil Air Patrol hosts over 400 members annually that attend a variety of training courses. Nine Squadron 307 cadets, including C/Amn Eli Bell, C/A1C Daniel Eby, C/SrA Gabrielle Eby, C/Amn Chloe Hains, C/A1C Reid Levengood, C/AB Daniel Rebert, C/A1C Hannah Rebert, C/AB Michael Slenker, and C/TSgt Destiny Whitmoyer successfully graduated from the rigorous cadet encampment course. The cadet encampment course, taught in a manner similar to Air Force Basic Military Training, is designed to develop cadet leadership skills, expose cadets to aerospace related careers, promote the importance of regular physical exercise, and to reinforce moral character. Cadet encampment also provides these cadets with the basic knowledge to become successful during their cadet airmen ranks and beyond. Three Squadron 307 cadets, including C/SSgt Nicholas

Arnold, C/SSgt Nolan Harner, and C/SMSgt Mason Bennett, successfully graduated from the Leadership Development Course. The purpose of the Leadership Development Course is to expand on the leadership skills taught at cadet encampment and teach them to be first-line supervisors. Cadets that attend this school have advanced past the cadet airman ranks and are in the cadet non-commissioned officer ranks. The goal of the Leadership Development Course is to provide these cadets with the skills necessary to be leaders at the flight sergeant and flight commander levels. One Squadron 307 cadet, C/CMSgt Jacob Bell, graduated from the Region Cadet Leadership School. This school is designed to allow cadet officers to become more effective leaders at their local squadron. Cadet officers are exposed to leadership theory, given opportunities for hands on leadership training with other cadets, and presented leadership challenges which they are expected to solve.
