Brittany’s Hope Walk Of Love Scheduled For Sept. 15 By Chelsea Peifer

The team members of Brittany’s Hope are thrilled to have an honored guest who has traveled all the way from Texas to train for and attend the 14th annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk on Saturday, Sept. 15, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. Dolly, one of the newest miniature ponies to reside in the Shepherd’s Staff Petting Zoo at the Star Barn Village at Stone Gables Estate, has already begun training with caretaker and international award-winning trainer Carl O’Callaghan. Dolly will run the 5K race pulling

a cart with her trainer on board to help raise funds for Brittany’s Hope. “Dolly trains five days a week, so she’s pretty fit. We’re very fortunate because we’re here, so we can do the course a few times before the event,” O’Callaghan said. Brittany’s Hope is an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit organization committed to aiding orphans in crisis and helping special needs children to be adopted into forever families. Brittany’s Hope provides grants to families that are in the process of adopting and has implemented programs in Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Kenya that provide holistic care directly to orphans. Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, said that the organization has set a fundraising goal of $65,000 for this year’s See Walk Of Love pg 3

Area Churches Converge For Corporate Worship, Outreach

By Chelsea Peifer

Having grown up in Harrisburg, pastor Robert M. Lescallette has been familiar with the name “Cameron” for as long as he can remember. “My grandparents lived on Cameron Street, and Simon Cameron is buried near their house,” Lescallette said. As pastor at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maytown, Lescallette has lived in the brick parsonage that was deeded to the church by none other than Cameron himself. On Sunday, Aug. 12, Lescallette will share his research on and knowledge of Cameron at a Marietta Town Talk titled “Simon Cameron: Much More Than a ‘Red Hot Stove.’” The presentation will begin at 2:30 p.m. at the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Library Sets August Schedule

Town Talk from pg 1 House offers the Sunday afternoon Town Talks free of charge as a community service in accordance with the purpose of the organization’s mission to promote “the spiritual, intellectual, educational, social, and physical welfare of men, women, and children.” Lescallette will offer an unbiased look into the life of Cameron, Pennsylvania’s consummate politician who was born in Maytown in 1799 and died at his Donegal Springs mansion in 1889. Oftentimes people know little more about Cameron than that he and Thaddeus Stevens were adversaries, and according to Lescallette, a quotation about Cameron and “a red hot stove” has been attributed to Stevens. “He had a reputation as something of a shyster. Like everybody that has ever lived, Simon Cameron was good, bad, and indifferent,”remarked Lescallette. Cameron had remarkable life accomplishments despite a difficult early start in life, including becoming a pre-eminent state and national political figure in the 19th century. “As many things as Simon did in his life, being a printer was what he was most proud of, and he had that listed on his gravestone,” noted

Lescallette. For his presentation, Lescallette will bring along a large portrait of Cameron that is hanging up inside the parsonage at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maytown. Part of Cameron’s orders in deeding the building to the church required the portraits of Cameron and his wife to be kept on display. Lescallette is a graduate of Dickinson College and the Lutheran Theological Seminary at Gettysburg. He recently celebrated 40 years as pastor at St. John’s Evangelical Lutheran Church in Maytown and will preach his final sermon as pastor at the church on Sunday, Aug. 26. Aaron’s Acres Camp program held an Alex’s Lemonade Stand fundraiser on July 18 at Weis Markets in Manheim and at the Lancaster Shopping Center near A.C. Moore. The campers raised a total of more than $554 for Alex’s Lemonade Stand. The participants are part of the Aaron’s Acres Acts of Kindness Program (Triple AOK), which allows adolescents and young adults ages 13 to 21 with developmental disabilities to give back to others rather than just being recipients of services. During each Triple AOK two-week camp session, campers attend the recreational program in the morning and are involved with seven community service projects in the afternoon. Recent projects included celebrating a Danner

Home resident’s 100th birthday, playing games with residents at Pleasant View Retirement Community, holding a car wash at Stauffers of Kissel Hill on Rohrerstown Road and collecting donations for a local nonprofit organization, helping at Power Packs, and completing a variety of tasks at Mennonite Central Committee. Aaron’s Acres provides yearround recreational programs to children and young adults ages 5 to 21 with developmental disabilities in central Pennsylvania. True Colors Shine At The E By Ann Mead Ash

TPA national communications chair Carol Niven (left) from Cleveland, Wis., presented a first-place award for annual reporting to George Keebler, Pennsylvania Division communications chairman, during the TPA National Convention in Gatlinburg, Tenn. TPA is a nonprofit community service association.

Reenie Panzini, pilot program director for the True Colors adult enrichment camp being held at The Emerald Foundation Community Campus (The E) this summer, was looking for a day program for her daughter, Sophia, who has special needs and had aged out of school. However, Panzini could not find something that quite fit her needs. “I got together with some other mothers of children with special needs, and we decided to create our own (program),” said Panzini. The resulting program currently serves six individuals. “Our participants came from word of mouth,” Panzini explained. True Colors, a camp for adults 21 years and up with intellectual disabilities, meets four days a week at The E, 2120

Oregon Pike, Lancaster. “ We meet Monday through Thursday from 1 to 4 p.m.,” explained Panzini, who added that the program started on June 26 and will run through mid-August. Panzini harbors hopes of turning the pilot into a year-round offering. “If things go well, we may try to become a nonprofit and turn into an adult enrichment fullday program,” she said. The program gives participants an opportunity to enjoy recreational activities while learning life skills, such as cooking, which can help the individuals live independently or even help them to gain employment. Panzini and her assistant, Alex Rittenhouse, said that the group hit the ground running with an activity that involved both cooking and developing sales skills. The E hosted 100 businesses at the Lancaster Chamber of Commerce “pop-up ” job fair on June 27, where True Colors sold baked goods. “We started off with a bang,” said Panzini. “We baked for four hours. We made lots of cupcakes, cookies, and gluten-free treats, and the

Campers and staff of the True Colors summer camp program have been baking, developing relationship skills, and enjoying fun activities as they meet four days a week at The Emerald Foundation Community Campus. next day the campers set up a table in the lobby.” “That was a very successful day,” said Rittenhouse of the job fair, noting that the event gave campers a chance to develop important skills in the areas of socialization and developing relationships. “The job fair definitely allowed (campers) to explore what was going on (in the building),” Rittenhouse said. The organizations that were present learned about True Colors as well. “We talked to people about what we were doing. It was a really great day from that

aspect,” Rittenhouse commented. The E is home to a number of local nonprofit organizations, including Big Brothers Big Sisters and Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services. Panzini has reached out to the tenants to let them know campers would like to help. “(We are letting them know) that if they need volunteers to do light office work or cleaning, we can help,” she said. “We are hoping (volunteering) will be a big part of (participants’) days.” Panzini added that the campers are already helping Lori Cubell, executive director of the Emerald Foundation, in a number of ways. In addition to the volunteering opportunities, Panzini and Rittenhouse have planned a number of activities for the campers, including playing basketball in The E gym and helping the foundation’s chef in the kitchen with food preparation. “The chef is teaching them chopping (of vegetables),” said Panzini. A succulent craft, games, and a scavenger hunt have all been part of the curriculum this summer, as well. Panzini has drawn on resources and her experience raising a child with special needs to design the program. “Sophia has been in special-needs classes and camps since she was 8,” said Panzini. “We have a lot of teachers advising us.” Readers who would like to learn more about True Colors may look for updates on The Emerald Foundation Facebook page. Students Take Part in Career Shadowing Day

GOTR Endowment Puts Focus On Future By Ann Mead Ash

McCaskey East High School juniors learned about CPR during a visit to Penn State Hershey Medical Center.

Dr. Bryan Stefek (right) A McCaskey East High School shared health information with high school students. student practiced CPR.

A group of more than 20 juniors from Lancaster’s McCaskey East High School health and science program recently took part in an exclusive opportunity to tour Penn State Hershey Medical Center and learn from working physicians and health care professionals. The tour was made possible by Penn State Children’s Hospital and the American Heart Association. Students were welcomed by Dr. Leslie Walker Harding, chair of pediatrics at Penn State Milton S. Hershey Medical Center, and Dr. Thomas Chin, chief of pediatric cardiology at Penn State Children’s Hospital. The students then toured the simulation area, research lab and 3-D

printing lab, where they took part in hands-on experiences using a CPR simulation and 3-D heart models. A cardiologist, researcher, physician assistant and sonographer also spoke with the students about their career paths during a lunch panel discussion. Echo sonographer Tammy Maguire provided a live demonstration of the procedure. Students concluded the day with a tour of a basic science lab. The career shadowing day is part of Penn State Children’s Hospital’s youth health sponsorship with the American Heart Association. Through the sponsorship, nearly 85,000 students at schools that participate in the American Heart Associa-

tion’s Jump Rope for Heart or Hoops for Heart programs throughout Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties received exclusive health education resources from physicians and health experts at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Students at participating schools also had an opportunity to participate in an essay and art contest, learn hands-only CPR thanks to the donation of the American Heart Association’s CPR Anytime kits, and receive fun booklets and activities to encourage healthful eating. For more information on the American Heart Association’s children-focused programs and resources, readers may visit www.heart.org/kids.

Girls on the Run (GOTR) Lancaster program director Jennifer West never wants to see a girl miss out on taking part in the program because of a lack of funds. “The worst thing we can hear is that a girl didn’t participate because it costs too much money, said West. “We want to make the program accessible to every girl regardless of financial limitations. The GOTR endowment, created in honor of Ellen McCabe, West’s stepmother, and administered by the Lancaster Community Foundation, will work to make sure that never happens. “The money GOTR will (receive) from the endowment will go directly to financial assistance for girls in need, explained West. GOTR Lancaster executive director Carrie Johnson elaborated, “We will receive a percentage each year based on how much is in (the fund), she said, adding that about half the girls who take part in the program receive scholarship funds. GOTR uses physical activity coupled with specific lessons to help develop competency in areas related to social, psychological, and physical development for girls in third through eighth grades. GOTR is not a competitive running program, but the curriculum uses running to teach life skills and promote health. According to West, McCabe was an integral part of GOTR Lancaster from its inception in March 2009. “She talked to us about fundraising and helped us find donors, said West, who noted that McCabe willingly shared her knowledge of how to run a nonprofit organization with West and Johnson. “She was very much a cheerleader and encourager who got us really excited and helped us to stay focused throughout the entire process, said West. “The entire way, (McCabe)

was there giving us ideas and supporting us in any way we needed. When McCabe passed away in the fall of 2016, West’s husband, Peter, made a suggestion. “My husband said, ‘Ellen loved GOTR, and she would do anything for it,’ shared West, adding, “She saw how it was changing these girls. Peter suggested the family start an endowment fund in McCabe’s memory for GOTR. “Ellen felt no matter how much money you have, you should give a percentage away, said West. Seeing the work of GOTR continue is important to both West and Johnson. “We want the same values to continue (into the future) for girls in the community and the thousands of girls we reach every year, explained Johnson. “That can’t happen unless we have bigpicture thinkers who value today and tomorrow equally. Our children are our future, and that is where hope lives. According to Johnson, creating the endowment is an investment in the future. “(The endowment embodies) the intention to continue supporting girls for generations, she said. West noted that the funds will support Lancasterarea young people in years to come. “Sustainability is key. Our thought process was that if you invest, you want to make sure the money will be used correctly, she said. “Should GOTR ever cease to exist, the endowment will be used for another organization that supports youths in Lancaster.

PUBLIC

Johnson lauded the Wests for their forward thinking. “Endowments create an important opportunity to keep money working positively in our community over time, she said, noting that while many people make gifts to causes, only a small percentage leave funds to an organization. “When people are gone, their gifts are gone, said Johnson. West said that she hopes area residents will consider the endowment in their planned giving. “We invite and encourage the community to give toward the endowment fund, West said. Readers who would like to learn more about the endowment may visit www.lancfound.org/fund/ girls-on-the-run-endowment-fund.

Ellen McCabe greeted a Girls on the Run (GOTR) 5K participant as she completed her run. McCabe’s family has given an endownment to GOTR Lancaster in her memory.

The Library System was awarded a grant from Music for Everyone Foundation in the amount of $1,216 to support the acquisition of percussion instruments to enhance library programs. The musical instrument collection is available to all public youth librarians, Be Ready Rover program coordinator, and the Bookmobile staff. Libraries will host “Together We Are Music”

events and other music-oriented programming for youths and families during the summer and in the future. Library programs and library outreach supports children’s learning and creative needs in giving them access to materials, like instruments, and opportunities. Using their imagination, children will learn about tempo and volume, creatively express

themselves, and perform in a nonjudgmental atmosphere. The Music for Everyone Foundation is committed to supporting music as a positive impact in the community by awarding grants to schools and community groups to support music programs. For more information about the Music for Everyone program, readers may visit www.musicforeveryone.net.
