Marching Bears To Perform “Our Parents’ Music!” By Chelsea Peifer

Band camp, though grueling at times, is a great way to ease back into the school year. From Aug. 5 to 8 the members of the Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) marching band did just that as they worked on fundamentals and practiced setting the drill to music and perfecting this year’s ’80s themed show: “Our Parents’ Music!” See Marching Band pg 3

The members of the Elizabethtown Area High School marching band learned and rehearsed for their new ’80s themed show during band camp from Aug. 5 to 8. Drum majors Max McCloud (right photo, left) and Claire Fritz (right photo, right), decked out in ’80s outfits for one of the week’s spirit days, are hoping audiences will love the upbeat music in the show.

The event is open to men, women, and youths. “ We want everyone to feel welcome. It’s a great way for dads and sons or husbands and wives or families to spend time together,” noted Jean. She and Jay are both avid hunters and enjoy spending time outdoors with their family. “We really want to see hunting and the outdoors get back to being a family thing,” added Jay. Doors will open at 4 p.m., and dinner will be served at 5:30 p.m. The full See Sportsmen Dinner pg 2

In other parts of the state, many 4-H clubs have folded or are dealing with dwindling attendance and involvement, but the Mount Joy 4-H

Community Club is bucking the trend. With the club having 130 members on the roster last fall, Community Club organizational leader Katina Musser said, “We were actually told that this is the largest club in the state.” See 4-H Club pg 7

Brad Jerman of Springboro, Ohio, will be the guest speaker at the third annual Hunt and Gather Sportsmen Dinner hosted by New Path Community Church on Sept. 14 in the gymnasium at Kraybill Mennonite School in Mount Joy. The evening will also include a full meal by Harvey’s Barbecue and numerous prizes.

The Mount Joy 4-H Community Club held its annual roundup on Aug. 5 at Mount Joy Mennonite Church. The event included a dinner and showcase of projects. While the projects were being scored by club leaders, the 4-Hers participated in STEM activities and art projects.

Drum majors Claire Fritz, a senior, and Max McCloud, a sophomore, explained that EAHS marching band members have a say in what the show’s theme will be for the following year. “We have to create a show as an assignment (for marching band), and that helps to come up with ideas,” said Claire. Motown and Pixar were a few of the other contenders as everyone brainstormed in the spring, but ultimately everyone agreed on the ’80s theme. The show runs approximately eight minutes and includes the songs “Take on Me” by A-Ha, “Africa” by Toto, “Never Gonna Give You Up” by Rick Astley, and “Livin’ on a Prayer” by Bon Jovi. Claire noted that typically the EAHS marching band shows only include three songs, but this year a fourth song was added. “A lot of it is rhythmically challenging because it’s classic rock, and we rely heavily on percussion,” Claire said. “We all love these songs. I hope (the audience) will love how iconic it is.” “I think our parents and people from their generation will enjoy it because it’s music from their time,” added Max. To be selected as drum majors, Claire and Max participated in a rigorous audition process that included creating their own routines and marches and commanding a block of students while marching. The auditions are open to any interested high school stu-

dent. Some of the drum majors’ responsibilities include leading the band through warm-up exercises, practice runs, and performances and assisting in teaching marching to other students. “We’ve been enjoying the cloudy days, and we’re really happy with the progress we’ve made this year, especially because band camp is one less day this year,” Claire remarked. The EAHS marching band members carried on long-running, highly anticipated band camp traditions like spirit days, a water balloon battle, and senior-freshman buddies. “Seniors can leave to go off-campus for lunch and buy things to spoil their freshman buddy,” Claire explained. That setup also helps the incoming freshmen to feel welcomed into the band each year and have a go-to person to ask questions and seek advice as they navigate the newness of marching band and high school in general. In addition to the two drum majors and 114 instrumentalists, the EAHS marching band includes eight color guard members and one majorette. Leadership for the group is provided by band director Steven G. Barraclough, assistant director and marching and maneuvering instructor Gerald Huesken, percussion instructor Glen Lentz, color guard instructors Mindy Sevcik and Dawn Harper, and majorette instructor Heather Hartsough. The public may see a performance of “Our Parents’ Music!” prior to the start of each home football game and during halftime at away games. The first home game performance is set to happen when the EAHS football team competes against Conrad Weiser High School on Friday, Sept. 6, at 7 p.m. at EAHS Thompson Field, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Aside from playing at football games, the EAHS marching band takes part in a local showcase of bands event and in local parades throughout the school year, including the Bainbridge Halloween Parade, the Elizabethtown Holiday Parade, and the Elizabethtown Memorial Day Parade.

The Susquehanna Chorale will perform “Music for a Summer’s Evening” at the Mount Gretna Tabernacle on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 7 p.m. The Tabernacle is located at Third Street and Glossbrenner Avenue in the Campmeeting area. The chorale’s artistic director, Linda L. Tedford, will conduct the chorale in its appearance as part of Mount Gretna’s Summer at the Tabernacle concert series. The chorale, founded in 1981 by Tedford, is a nationally recognized adult chamber ensemble of 36 auditioned singers. From Gregorian chants to the rhythms of the Renaissance and Baroque eras, from the music of current composers to classics from the Great American Songbook, the concert will explore a variety of repertoire. Guest artist Dr. Todd Goranson will be featured on saxophone for select pieces. In addition, Goranson will perform a preconcert recital 15 minutes before the performance. The chorale’s concert will include Byron J. Smith’s “Worthy to Be Praised,” which expresses praise to God and which will contrast with the peaceful reflections of evening in “Abendlied” by Josef Rhein-

4-H Club from pg 1 On Aug. 5, the gymnasium at Mount Joy Mennonite Church was packed with evidence of that as 4-H members, volunteers, and their families gathered for the annual roundup. The event featured a dinner and a showcase of projects that 4-H members had completed in their programs of study this year. While the projects were being scored by club leaders, the students participated in STEM activities and art projects. The evening ended with a recognition program. 4-H is a national program designed to help youths ages 5 to 18 develop knowledge and skills to become capable, caring, and contributing citizens. Children and teenagers may sign up to participate in projects such as sewing, photography, rocketry, beekeeping, candy making, backpacking, and more. Tie-dye, one of the new projects offered through the Mount Joy club this year, turned out to be very popular. According to Musser, the first 10 spots filled up so quickly that the club leader opened another group for 10 more students and still had a waiting list after that. Each participant got to make a shirt, towel, and pillowcase. Another in-demand project his year was Science Fun, which focused on STEM activities and experiments. “We made volcanoes and ice cream and pop rocks,” said Aubrey Fry, 10, of Mount Joy. Mount Joy resident Amanda Ellenberger, 19, completed her final year in 4-H and hopes to return as a leader. “4-H holds a special place in my heart because it teaches skills you don’t normally learn,” said Amanda. This year, she took part in canoeing, strawberries, advanced sewing, calligraphy, and cake decorating. Aside from the unique skill sets she developed in projects

Tate Garman, 10, of Manheim, said that rocketry was his favorite project. “We build the rockets out of empty soda bottles and then they shoot off with water pressure.” “I liked entomology. We learned how to identify different kinds of insects,” said Boyanna Dohner, 13, of Mount Joy. Musser noted that the Mount Joy club draws participants from not only Mount Joy and neighboring areas, but even further into Middletown and Lancaster. The Mount Joy club aims to be intentional in recruiting as many volunteers as possible to meet the growing interest levels of local children who wish to participate in 4-H projects. “We’ve started a new vision and

grown into this new model where the kids get elected as club officers, and then we ask that one of their parents serve along with them on a leadership team,” explained Musser. “Last year, we created a prospective volunteer survey that we handed out to see what parents might be interested in doing.” With the Mount Joy 4-H Community Club thriving and growing, Musser said her hope would be to see a planting of another 4-H club in another location. Ruhl’s United Methodist Church (UMC), 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will host its 19th annual God’s Clothing Closet from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturday, Aug. 24. The community is invited to shop for free quality used clothing, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children. Items will be available in all sizes and for all seasons. Organizer Kris Gray noted that the clothing is organized by size and displayed on racks and tables for ease of shopping. The facility is air-conditioned and handicapped-accessible, with plenty of parking available. A limited number of shopping bags will be available, so shoppers may want to bring their own. According to Gray, 568 people attended the 2018 God’s Clothing Closet event, making it the highest attendance on record. Before the doors opened, the waiting line extended past the Prayer Garden located beside the church parking lot. More than 500 hours of volunteer time at the church went into the event, Gray said, plus countless hours spent gathering, laundering, and mending clothing and

preparing food for the day. Attendees are encouraged but not required to bring donations of nonperishable food items or toiletries for the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Current needs at the food pantry include canned vegetables, jelly, saltines and other crackers, canned fruit, canned tuna and chicken, and Spam. Last year, five boxes of food were donated to the food pantry thanks to shoppers. The God’s Clothing Closet event will also have free Bibles and devotional materials available for adults and children. A limited number of quilts handmade by Ruhl’s church members will also be available for new mothers, and free on-site child care will be provided. Once folks are finished shopping, they are welcome to relax and enjoy musical entertainment, light refreshments, and a game room in an area separate from the clothing setup. Donations of children’s clothing only will be accepted at the church from Monday, Aug. 19, to Friday, Aug. 23. Leftover items will be donated to various local ministries. Readers with questions about the event may call the Ruhl’s UMC office at 717-665-3400.
