The Lions Club also has a mission of giving back to the community, Lerch noted, with a focus originally on helping to eradicate blindness. “That’s one of the main focuses as a national organization,” Lerch said, noting that the Lions Club collects used eyeglasses. “We’re also about supporting our immediate Elizabethtown community. We do a lot to address needs right here, whether it’s supporting the fire department, ECHOS, the food bank or students in the school district.” He emphasized that the Lions are looking for even more projects to support. “If people are aware of a need that is not being served in the community, we’d like to know about it,” he said. “We’ll look at it and determine, ‘Is this something we can address, or do we need to get a partner organization to help?’ We can’t help if we don’t know there’s a need.” He also encouraged anyone who’s interested to come to a Lions Club meeting to learn more about the club. The group meets on the second and fourth Tuesdays of every month at the Elizabethtown Fire Department, 171 N. Mount Joy St. Meetings begin at 6:15 p.m. with a meal and typically include a speaker. “We bring in people on a wide variety of subjects,” Lerch said. “Our meetings are also an opportunity for fellowship and fun, and they are a chance to get together to work on upcoming projects like the car show or bingo. Our service projects are a great opportunity to get to know eachForother.”more information on the Elizabethtown Lions Club, contact Greg Hitz at 717-367-6616 or ghitz@comcast.net.

He will begin his first full school year there later thisRemimonth.works on-site at the school during the week under the guidance of trainer and English language development teacher Nancy Grundhoffer. She’s joined by a team of four other staff members, including a guidance counselor and reading intervention specialist, who have all received training through United Disabilities Services (UDS) to get the maximum impact from Remi’s presence at the school. “We do a variety of things with Remi,” Grundhoffer shared. “He can help kids who are in full-time learning support just by being with them. He can help kids who need comfort. He can intervene when a child is upset and help de-escalate the situation.” Remi also enjoys being read to by students. “He has a calming effect on children,” she added. “He’s gentle. He’s physically beautiful. People gravitate toward him.” MEAD Cliff Sweigart

Great things are happening with the Elizabethtown Lions Club, and that’s great news for the community. The Lions have a number of initiatives in the works, said John Lerch, club treasurer. “We are bringing bingo back to the Elizabethtown Fair,” he noted. “We did it for 40-plus years but stopped a number of years ago. We’ll be offering it every evening from 6 to 9 p.m., and we’ll be holding senior bingo on Wednesday (Aug. 24) from 2 to 4 p.m.” The fair will run from Monday, Aug. 22, through Saturday, Aug. 27, at the fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. The Lions are also working on bringing military banners to Elizabethtown to honor heroes who have served, Lerch said. “This is in the works, but we’re looking to collect names of people who are interested in participating,” he stated. On Saturday, Sept. 17, the Lions Club will hold a car show and chicken barbecue at the Rheems Fire Department, 350 Anchor Road, Elizabethtown. Tickets will be for sale during bingo at the fair as well as at other locations throughout Elizabethtown. “We’ll also be holding a blood drive with the Central Pennsylvania Blood Bank that day,” LerchAlongnoted.with community events, the Lions Club honors a Lancaster County Career and Technology Center student from the Elizabethtown Area School District each month during the school year. “We discovered that this was an underserved area in terms of honoring these students,” Lerch explained. “We want to highlight their achievements.”

An almost-3-year-old is making students happy at East High Street Elementary School in Elizabethtown. His big brown eyes have a calming effect. His nonjudgmental air gives kids confidence to be themselves. And don’t overlook his thick, soft fur and wagging tail.

Susan Vollmar, secondary trainer, noted that Remi has made a big impact on students. “I have seen what he can do, and it’s life-changing and emotional,” she said. She recalled a time when Remi helped a child who was transitioning out of a wheelchair into a walker and another time when Remi’s low-key attitude helped a student overcome his fear of dogs. Another time, Remi helped teach a grammar lesson in a classroom, depositing nouns, adjectives and adverbs written on cards into the correct bucket as students called them out. “The kids really paid attention to that lesson,” Vollmar remarked.Whenhe’s not working, Remi lives in a kennel at the UDS offices at 2270 Erin Court in Lancaster. He spends his weekends at the homes of various trainers or volunteers. Having a facility dog is expensive, and Remi was funded by the congregation of St. Paul’s United Methodist Church in Elizabethtown, who collected money specifically to purchase the pup for the school district. Throughout the year, the elementary school will hold various fundraisers to help cover the cost of vet care, food and Vollmarsupplies.noted that Remi is just one of numerous facility dogs placed at schools throughout the county by UDS. “There is a growing need for facility dogs,” she said. “Cases of anxiety in schoolchildren are on the rise.” A dog can meet a unique need in schools, she explained, adding, “Dogs have a way of reaching humans where other humans cannot.”Before school and on breaks throughout the day, Remi has time to run, play and do all sorts of canine things. “When he’s not in his vest, he’s just a dog,” Grundhoffer said. “When his vest is on, he knows it’s time to work.” Vollmar noted that there is a waiting list for facility dogs, but she encouraged anyone who is interested in learning more to contact Lori Breece at lorig@udservices.org or visit https://udservices.org. also an opportunity to connect people to resources in the community.” Past breakfasts have featured presentations by community organizations, the police department and other groups. Price remarked that previous breakfasts have averaged more than 140 people, and he hopes the restarted event will continue to grow as the church plans to host the Breakfast Bowl on the third Saturday of the month year-round. “The potential for the breakfast is tremendous,” he stated. “It’s about building relationships with people in our community. It’s about reaching people in need and helping them.” The community is invited to enter the church through the carport and double glass doors into the fellowship hall, where the breakfast will be served.

William P. Mattern, born on August 20, 1925, in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, passed away in his 97th year on Wednesday, August 3, 2022, at Masonic Villages in Elizabethtown, Pennsylvania. He graduated from East Lampeter High School and Franklin and Marshall College. He served in the Navy as an aerial photographer during World War II, stationed in Guam and later in Tokyo, Japan. In his professional life, he was an accountant, having worked in various positions within the Hershey Entertainment and Resorts Company, including the Hershey Lumber Company and Hersheypark and Arena. After 30 years with the organization, he retired in 1989. Bill had many talents and interests, including dabbling in darkroom photography, assembling models and dollhouses, constructing model railroads, doing home remodeling projects, woodworking furniture and toys, grilling at family cookouts, playing with his grandchildren, and slipping Milkbone treats to dogs. He was an active member of the Hershey Volunteer Fire Company and served as Treasurer for many years. In retirement, he looked forward to his daily morning coffee at the firehouse with friends. The church served the free community breakfast once a month for about three years before the pandemic paused the event in 2020. This month’s meal marks the return of the breakfast, with some modifications. The menu will include eggs, sausage, hash browns, pancakes, muffins, fruit, juices and coffee. “We will have table hosts at each table to facilitate conversation and listen or pray if the other people would like,” Price said, noting that the table hosts are a direct result of surveys from past breakfast attendees. “We are hoping the table hosts will get feedback from the people they talk to so we can truly meet the needs of the people coming to the breakfast.”

Nancy Shonk, who is a member of the church kitchen committee, said Florin Church has a reputation for its food ministry. It’s known in the community for serving homemade whoopie pies and hosting regular luncheons throughout the year. “The Breakfast Bowl is a way for us to expand on our food ministry,” Shonk noted. “It’s

Breakfast Bowl Will Fill The Soul

The members of Florin Church of the Brethren want to feed the community - both physically and spiritually. They will hold a free Breakfast Bowl on Saturday, Aug. 20, at the church, 815 Bruce Ave. The meal will be served from 9 to 9:30 a.m., with devotional time from 9:30 to 10 a.m. According to Bob Price, event organizer, the Breakfast Bowl will serve many purposes. “People are hurting in a lot of different ways,” he said. “Lack of food is one problem. While this day won’t make a significant difference in the longterm, it can help that day. Lack of people to talk to is another problem. People are lonely. This is an opportunity for fellowship.”

The community is invited to a free breakfast at Florin Church of the Brethren.

According to Millette, addiction has been tied to an interruption of the natural maturation process, which can cause an individual to experience arrested growth and development. To remedy this, the program works to teach life skills, including financial management and how to negotiate interpersonal relationships. Once a student is employed, he or she can build income and satisfy debt and restitution. Because addiction impacts families in emotional, mental, social, and economic areas, The Potter’s House curriculum includes a program that incorporates family understanding in the recovery process. Millette noted that the pandemic has impacted the addiction situation in Lancaster County significantly, and he cited job loss and isolation as factors. “We really have something for everyone,” said Kris Gray, chair of God’s Clothing Closet at Ruhl’s United Methodist Church. “We have clothing and shoes and purses and bags and accessories and books, housewares, linens, devotional material and more.”The church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, will hold its annual God’s Clothing Closet event in its gym on Thursday, Friday and Saturday, Aug. 25, 26 and 27. We don’t ask you to show financial need. Just come and shop.” Along with clothing, housewares and devotional material, graband-go snacks will be available at the Dunmire, exit. who is the event co-chair, emphasized the quality and variety of items in God’s Clothing Closet. “We have a lot of brand-name stuff,” she stated. “Some things still have the tags on them.”The church has been holding the event for 22 years, Gray said, noting that the project began as a way to serve local families. “We used to send clothing to (a mission) in Kentucky, and we had to pay to send the clothing down there,” she commented. “When we were giving away food boxes at Christmas, some of the families we were serving said they needed clothes for their kids. I thought, ‘Why are we sending clothes to Kentucky when there is a need right here in Manheim?’”Lastyear, the event served about 300 shoppers, Gray said, and more than 50 new Bibles as well as children’s Bible storybooks and devotional materials were given away. As the owner of Creative Inspirationz Gallery in Manheim, Heather Lindsey believes in the power of art. She also believes in collaboration. She’ll bring the two together for the “Interpretation of Time” art showcase. Scheduled to open on Friday, Jan. 6, 2023, the exhibit is currently accepting entries. The showcase is open to any medium of art, and Lindsey said the theme is also open for interpretation. “It’s about, ‘What does time mean to you?’” she stated. “Since it’s happening in January, that’s when people think about time - the new year, the beginning. I think also as we’ve gone through COVID, a lot of people have reevaluated what’s important to them, and that can be reflected in their art.”

the “Interpretation of Time” art showcase are (from left) Christa Neville, Heather Lindsey and Joanie Kretzer. three boxes of food to the Manheim Central Food Pantry. Donations of nonperishable food items will again be accepted this year, but are not required. “We would love to get back to serving over 600 people like we did in the past,” Gray stated. “It’s free and it’s open to anyone. We just want people to come and get what they need.” Donations of clothing and accessories will be accepted during the week of the event, beginning on Monday, Aug. 22. Donations may be dropped off by the front door of the church under the roof. Clean linens and towels will also be accepted, but no furniture will be accepted. Gray emphasized that there is a special need for baby, children’s and teen clothing as well as clothing in size 2X and larger in good condition. God’s ClosetClothing frompg 5

The showcase will be held at the Brick House Café, 60 N. Main St., Manheim, which recently underwent renovation and expanded to include an art gallery and tasting room for 2D Distillery on the second floor. Lindsey noted that the art event would not be possible without the support of the Brick House, which will be providing catered hors d’oeuvres for the opening reception, as well as 2D Distillery, which will provide tastings at that event. “The opening reception is bringing together three things people love - art, food and drinks,” Lindsey noted, emphasizing that the showcase is a collaborative effort between the three businesses. The reception will also feature music from a violinist and performances from BalanceLindseyDance.encourages anyone with a passion for art to enter the showcase. “Art is so subjective, so people can enter anything they want that fits the theme,” she said. “My heart is for the showcase to be geared toward up-andcoming artists who don’t have the resources or contacts for a big gallery opening.” She noted that three pieces to be spotlighted in the window at the Brick House will be selected by herself, Brick House manager Christa Neville and 2D manager Joanie Kretzer. Lindsey’s goal is to offer an art showcase every other month throughout the year in the Brick House gallery space. She’s starting with a soft opening of the concept in September and October. That showcase will feature a sunflower theme. “I just want to support artists and give people access to beautiful art,” Lindsey said. “I want the art showcase to be welcoming to everyone.”Formore information on entering art in the “Interpretation of Time” showcase, missionspieces.Artistshncinspirationz@gmail.com.emailmayenteruptosixThedeadlineforsub-isSaturday,Oct.1.
