Hope’s Haven Sets Yard, Bake Sale Hope’s Haven Horse Rescue and Youth Camp will benefit from a yard sale and bake sale on Saturday, Aug. 22, beginning at 9 a.m. The community is contributing to the event, which will take place at 33 Fieldstone Circle, Elizabethtown. The public is invited to attend. Event host Brenda Stauffer noted that there will be something for everyone, from babies to adults. “We have filled a tractor trailer-size storage unit,” Stauffer said. Items, which will be for sale by donation, will include furniture, toys, games, household items, holiday items, electronics, saddles, outdoor items, sports items, purses, dishes, and exercise equipment. Homemade soups, prepared in a certified kitchen, will be available in quartor pint-size containers. Baked goods will be donated by some well-known
local bakers. Proceeds from the event will go toward the care of the horses. Hope’s Haven Horse Rescue and Youth Camp, located between Elizabethtown and Bainbridge, pairs rescue horses with children who are facing challenges or difficulties in their lives. “Within this mentorship program, we strive to pair a rescue horse with a child of similar background, whether it be abuse, neglect, or another form of emotional/physical trauma,” said Diane Gruber-Strickland, founder and director of Hope’s Haven. “As long as I can remember, I’ve always had a vision and a desire to start a nonprofit,” Gruber-Strickland noted. “The desire (was) very strong in the area of equine rescue and at the same time helping at-risk, troubled youths.” She never gave up on that vision, and in See Hope s Haven pg 4

Community Invited To Enjoy Free Ice Cream Gifts That Give Hope Fair Moves Online Congregation members from Elizabethtown Mennonite Church have been giving out water at the Elizabethtown Fair since 2007. Since this year’s fair has been canceled, the church will instead give out free ice cream on Wednesday, Aug. 26, from 4 to 8 p.m. at the church, located at 300 S. Spruce St., Elizabethtown. The event is free and open to the community. According to Paul Swanger, minister of
outreach, the ice cream giveaway will be a drivethrough and it will take place in the church parking lot. Both chocolate and vanilla ice cream will be available. “We are renting a soft ice cream machine, and we will have it right inside the doors at the church. (We will) take orders and bring them out,” Swanger said, noting that about 20 church volunteers will help at the event. “If we run out of soft serve, we will have regular ice cream there as well.” Church members hope to reach as many community members as possible. “We had a water stand and gave out free water and prayed for people (at the fair),” Swanger shared. “This year, because of COVID we still want to bless the community somehow, so we had to be creative, and we decided to give out free ice cream. “We will have a prayer tent there if anyone wants to give a prayer See Elizabethtown Mennonite pg 4

A year ago, Jenn Knepper, founder of the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, was looking forward to moving the fair from its location at the Farm and Home Center in Lancaster to The Junction Center in Manheim. This year, Knepper is talking about the online fair that the organization will hold on Saturday, Dec. 5, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. During that time period, those wishing to give an alternative gift may visit www.giftsthatgivehope.org and choose an organization to donate to. “You’re purchasing a gift for somebody, and we will send you a card with a description of the gift you purchased,” said Knepper, who added that the fair is the perfect vehicle to find a meaningful gift, especially for those who do not need anything in particular.
Knepper suspects that recent occurrences may have changed perspectives on meaningful gifts. “I think through this (pandemic) people may have realized that stuff really isn’t important, other than basic necessities,” she said. “(Instead of) all the stuff we might have thought was necessary, we See Gifts That Give Hope pg 7

Labor Day activities at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown, will take place on Monday, Sept. 7, beginning at 4 p.m. The event will be held rain or shine. Attendees may bring their own blanket or chair. The purchase of a general admission ticket will include the following activities. Self-guided tours of the Star Barn Village, which includes the historic and fully restored 1877 Star Barn and its associated outbuildings; the fully restored 1860 Ironstone Ranch; and the 1844 Herr’s Mill Covered Bridge, will be available. Other activities will include strolling the gardens, watching two remote-controlled World War II model battleships as
in the wake of the COVID-19 crisis. In addition, many children throughout central Pennsylvania receive free or reduced-price lunches and breakfasts during the school year. With schools shut down since March due to COVID-19, many children have lost access to these meals. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. The grant will enable the food bank to continue to provide healthy, nutritious meals to children in need. Since the start of the COVID-19 crisis in March, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has distributed more than 28 million pounds of food to those in need in the 27 counties it serves. It is currently serving more than 175,000 individuals per month, including children, seniors and veterans. That is an increase from the 135,000 per month who relied on the food bank prior to March. As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities in which it resides. Through its program Made-to-Share, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 600 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint. Last year, when Ruhl’s United Methodist Church, 4810 Elizabethtown Road, Manheim, held its 19th annual God’s Clothing Closet (GCC) giveaway, more than 650 shoppers attended. This year, due to COVID-19 restrictions, organizer Kris Gray knows there will not be more than 375 total. The 20th event, to which the community is invited to shop for free, quality used clothing, footwear, and accessories for men, women, and children, will be held over three days rather than a few hours on a single Saturday morning. Another change is that organizers will assign time slots so that the number of shoppers in the gymnasium will be limited to 25 at a time, with 15 slots available over the three-day period. Masks will be required for all who attend, and shoppers will only be allowed 45 minutes of time in the building. “All shoppers must be registered for a time slot,” said Gray, who noted that those wishing to attend must call Barb at 717201-7566 to reserve a spot on one of the following days: Thursday, Aug. 27, or Friday,

In the event of unexpected or planned closures, GOTR will shift in-person programming to virtual practices. Coaches will be provided with specific resources, training, and support to prepare them to seamlessly deliver the program virtually. The virtual program will
engage and connect socially and emotionally and will provide physical activity as well. As guidelines allow, GOTR will also plan to meet safely in small groups as it connects at alternate sites such as parks, community centers, churches, and schools. Additional modifications that have been made to the GOTR and Heart and Sole program delivery include reduced team size for safer gathering; reduced duration from 10 weeks to eight weeks to accommodate a later start date; flexibility in times and days of practices; a flexible season start
