Children’s Playroom Gears Up For Autumn By Chelsea Peifer

Vicki Dolan, executive director of Children’s Playroom of Lancaster County, often tells moms and dads that parenting is the most important job they will ever have, and it is also the hardest. Dolan is passionate about setting parents up for success as they navigate that journey, which is why she founded Children’s Playroom, a parenting support group that exists to let people know that there are others who are going through the same parenting difficulties and that they are not alone. “Children’s Playroom gives a safe haven for parents to come and open up with each other,” shared Dolan. Prayer Walk Passes Through Lancaster

John Halvorsen, a pastor from Duluth, Minn., recent completed Prayer Walk America, which took him from Santa Monica Pier in Los Angeles, Calif., to Manhattan, N.Y., in 38 weeks. “We started Oct. 31, 2018,” said John, who averaged 16 miles a day. He arrived in Times Square on July 31. Along the way, he and his wife, Sandy, who followed along on John’s walk in a motorhome,

stopped in Lancaster for dinner at St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township. This walk, the most recent of several John has completed, was titled “Prayer Walk America - An Appeal to Heaven.” “This is … an appeal to people to start praying,” said John between bites as he enjoyed his potluck dinner at the church. “The response has been so positive.” John said that Sandy, who generally travels 2 to 3 miles ahead of him while he is walking, has asked people along the route how the couple can pray for

them. “People start crying, pouring out their hearts, asking for prayer,” said John, who recalled several talks with farmers in Ohio, Indiana, and Illinois. “We walked through fields that were muddy, and they couldn’t get the tractors in to plant or the seed was rotting,” he said, adding that one of the farmers told him, “I think God is trying to get our attention.” John received his first call to embark on a prayer walk while he and Sandy were serving as missionaries in Ireland working with Harvest Network International. “I suddenly received a burden for the United States,” said John, who was in Ireland with Sandy from 1991 to 1998. “After a year of trying to discern what the Lord was saying, we turned the reins over to another couple and moved back to the United States.” Back in Minnesota, John began doing pastoral work. “I would go to the Mall of America to pray daily, and I would walk around the mall, so people called me the pastor of the Mall of America.” John said that in 1998, God gave him a vision of walking across America, along with a verse. “Genesis 13:17 came to me,” said John. “‘Get up and walk the length and the breadth of the land.’” John began to ask God what the cause would be for the action. “I felt the Lord was saying, ‘There are tumultuous times coming to America, and I am going to grant you unusual favor with the press.’” On Sept. 21, 1998, John began walking from the Canadian border in Minnesota, and he ended the walk when he arrived in Gulfport, Miss., on Jan. 4, 1999. His journey was chronicled by a country music radio station that asked him to call in weekly with updates. Billy Graham’s organization interviewed John four times, and he was also interviewed by Bill Bright. John said God’s message for listeners was that tumultuous times were coming, and it was important to pray. “This was before 9/11,” noted John.

John (left) and Sandy Halvorsen displayed the flag they carried when they visited St. Thomas Episcopal Church in Manheim Township in July. The couple stopped for dinner at the church as John worked to complete his prayer walk across America. The Halvorsens left Los Angeles, Calif., on Oct. 31, 2018, and arrived in Manhattan on July 31. In April of 1999, John and Sandy traveled to the West Coast to begin his first cross-country walk. “We started in a fishing village in Oregon,” recalled John, who said that the walk ended in Rehoboth Beach, Del., in November of 1999. “Again, we had favor with the press,” said John. In 2008, John felt the Lord calling him to walk from Portugal to China. He began in Cabo da Roca, Portugal, the westernmost point of continental Europe, and walked 6,020 miles to an area near China, while praying blessings on the countries he passed through. During the recent trip, John carried a special flag bearing the image of a pine tree and the words “An Appeal to Heaven.” The flag is a replica of one that George Washington used during the Revolutionary War. “They knew at the time that unless an appeal to heaven was made, the Revolutionary War would not be won,” said Sandy. “John felt he should carry this flag, as we are making an appeal to heaven for awakening for this nation. We need the outpouring of the Holy Spirit. We need the Lord,” she said. Readers who wish to learn more about the Halvorsens’ mission may visit www.prayerwalk america.com.

Nicaragua from pg 1 Friends in Action (FIA), headquartered in Middletown, recently sent local volunteers on shortterm mission trips to Nicaragua. FIA has been assisting the Rama Cay people, known as the last indigenous people group in Nicaragua, for more than a dozen years. Many volunteers return year after year. Using community transformation projects as a platform to

share the Gospel, local volunteers have an opportunity to take an active role in the Great Commission by teaching biblical and life skills or completing construction projects. This summer, more than 20 congregants from Lebanon Valley Bible Church and Community Bible Church in Marietta hosted Bible training sessions for more than 100 Rama adults and

children. FIA’s strategy is to teach the entire Bible chronologically to the people while also progressing on a cohesive community development plan. Additionally, seven motherdaughter or grandmother-daughter pairs hosted a vacation Bible school for more than 60 of the Rama children. The visiting teams led older Rama children through Bible stories about John the Baptist and the start of Jesus’ ministry, while younger children learned about the seven days of Creation. Volunteers reported that the children asked questions, completed crafts, played competitive games, sang Bible songs, and gave plenty of hugs. They also received candy treats, which they called sugar plums regardless of the variety. Linda Esbenshade shared that she and her granddaughter Anya were impacted by the friendliness of the people. FIA also recently drilled a well and constructed a laundry/shower house for the Rama Cay people. Readers can learn more about local travelers’ efforts on 10 projects in six remote locations around the globe at www.fiaintl.org. FIA is also fundraising and recruiting team members to build the Amanda Brandt Memorial Playground for the Rama Cay children during a work trip scheduled for Friday, Nov. 15, to Sunday, Nov. 24. Labor Day Auction To Feature Tools And Much More

R045569

By Dayna M. Reidenouer

BEST PRICE • BEST PEOPLE • BEST SERVICE

As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.” Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The

things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,” Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools” was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,” Minardi said. Decommissioned commercialgrade tools and equipment, as well as household tools, have been donated for the auction, and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. “We’re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-ityourselfers or Amish,” Minardi remarked. The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed. Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last year’s event brought in $760,000.

Hospice & Community Care staff members (from left) Devon Fiore, special events coordinator; Coco Minardi, donor relations manager; and Allie Bucher, communications manager, display a tiny sample of the items that will be sold at the 35th annual Labor Day Auction in Quarryville on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2. “We can’t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,” she marveled. The fairgrounds will open at 7:30 a.m. on Aug. 31 and Sept. 2 so visitors may register for bidder numbers, purchase their all-youcan-eat food passes, and preview the items. The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2.

Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later. Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more. Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated. Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911. The collectors’ items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided. For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said. The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCC’s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County. HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets. To donate items for the auction, readers may contact special events coordinator Devon Fiore at 717391-2434 or dfiore@hospice community.org. For more information about the event, folks may visit www.LaborDayAuction.org.

“When I asked my son what he misses about Children’s Playroom, he said, ‘My friends,’” relayed Moore. “The moms develop friendships too. You can share what your deepest failures are, and there’s no judgment,” said Martin. “The support is huge,” agreed Moore. “I didn’t realize how much I would need that support as a stay-at-home parent.” In addition to morning sessions, Children’s Playroom offers a single moms’ parenting program every other Wednesday from 5 to 7:30 p.m. Dinner is provided, and the group follows the same format of playtime together followed by a time where moms split off for discussion while the children have supervised activities in another room. Readers who would like more information or to register for Children’s Playroom may call 717-945-9348 or visit www.childrensplayroom.org.

The first occupancy of military groups in the town dates back to 1885 when the Pennsylvania National Guard began a 50-year annual encampment within 120 acres of Mount Gretna. The National Guard continued its encampment in Gretna until 1935 when moving to its new location down the road at Fort Indiantown Gap. Gretna Theatre will provide a discount to active service members and veterans. In addition to providing a discounted rate for veterans, a block of complimentary tickets has been given to service members at Fort Indiantown Gap and the Lebanon VA Hospital. The military performance troupe is perhaps best known for performing around the world for service members and their families for the past 70 years. Tickets are available at www.GretnaTheatre.org or by calling the box office at 717-964-3627.

through age 6 - are welcome to register to attend Children’s Playroom once a week at St. Paul’s United Methodist Church, 398 N. Locust St., Elizabethtown. Sessions are offered from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. on Tuesdays, Wednesdays, or Thursdays beginning on Tuesday, Sept. 17, and continuing through May. Space is limited. There is a fee to attend, but scholarships are available. To sign up, interested individuals may visit www.childrensplayroom.org. For the first portion of the morning, parents and children play together before the parents head to another room to listen to guest speakers or have a discussion, covering topics like child development, bedtime routines, toilet training, stress management, and positive discipline. “Discipline means to teach, so we’re talking about teaching our children,” said Dolan. “We talk about being kind and firm and how we need both. We can be kind but still be firm.” Learning about positive discipline and practical strategies for how to implement that has been a game-changer for Cathi Martin, an Elizabethtown mother of four children ranging from ages 10 to 1, who will be attending Children’s Playroom for her eighth year this fall. “(Children’s Playroom) really has made me feel more confident in my purpose as a parent of my kids. It’s given me direction,” said Martin. “(Positive discipline) makes me feel better as a parent because it’s just a more positive way of handling things.” At first, her husband was apprehensive about the term “positive discipline,” but once she explained and modeled tools she learned at Children’s Playroom - such as asking versus telling - and he saw that they worked, he was on board. Manheim resident and mother of three Lisa Moore said that since attending Children’s Playroom, she has noticed that she yells a lot less - a result that also thrills Dolan, as one of her motivations in offering Children’s Playroom is to help parents realize there are effective ways to discipline children without yelling. Children’s Playroom is something that Martin and Moore say their children all look forward to - or have great memories of - as well. “The guidance they get from Miss Vicki is phenomenal,” Martin said. It also helps with easing children (and parents) into transitions, as parents are only a room away and the staff members provide updates as needed. Plus, the children have fun socializing with peers.

Gretna Theatre will celebrate local veterans with “The USO Show Troupe’s American Heartland Tribute.” The production will run at the Mount Gretna Playhouse, 200 Pennsylvania Ave., Mount Gretna, from Thursday, Aug. 22, through Sunday, Aug. 25. Performances will take place at 2 and 7:30 p.m. on Aug. 22; at 7:30 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 23, and Saturday, Aug. 24; and at 2 p.m. on Aug. 25. The USO Show Troupe will perform a special 90-minute show as a tribute to central Pennsylvania veterans. The military performance troupe will sing and dance its way through the military history of Mount Gretna using a selection of songs, including “America, the Beautiful,” “Born in the USA,” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” The Mount Gretna Historical Society has teamed up with the USO to create the unique show highlighting Mount Gretna’s military history.

Lions John Lerch and Glen Leib emphasized that, as always, the purpose of the show is to raise funds for the various causes that the Lions support in the Elizabethtown community. This year, the club has a new partnership with the Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) MiniTHON to raise funds for Four Diamonds, which covers medical expenses not paid for by insurance for pediatric cancer patients at Penn State Children’s Hospital. Aside from Four Diamonds, Lerch said that the Elizabethtown Lions’ primary charitable focuses for this year

are the Elizabethtown and Rheems fire departments, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, United Churches of Elizabethtown, Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS), scholarships for EAHS graduating seniors, and Elizabethtown Area School District. Lions Club members also offer support for people in need of vision services and diabetes prevention and control services, as Lerch noted that diabetes is one of the leading causes of blindness in the nation. At the show, club members will present donations to the Rheems VFD, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, and United Churches of Elizabethtown. PUBLIC AUCTION 25 ACRE FARM WITH 2.5 STORY HOME,

Paul Davis Holds Food Collection LCCTC Students Recognized

Paul Davis of Central Pennsylvania in Lancaster was among the franchise office winners in the 2019 Paul Davis CAN Charity Drive. Paul Davis Restoration Inc. staff members at the company’s Jacksonville, Fla., headquarters and franchise offices across the U.S. and Canada participated in the fundraising initiative to collect cans of food for people and pets. During June, employees at participating offices collected cans of food and made structures using the cans. On July 1, participants posted photos of their structures on Paul Davis’ Facebook page, and voting via “likes” on the posts began on July 5. On Aug. 1, the winning structures were announced for prizes and office parties. Winners were recognized for the greatest number of cans collected, the best images, and the greatest number of staff members participating. Each office donated its collected food to a local charity. Paul Davis of Central Pennsylvania, which has the franchise code LLCO, was

recognized in the contest. “LLCO Animal House” won an office party for collecting and donating the most food, with 1,188 cans. The office donated its collected cans to the Pet Pantry of Lancaster County, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that meets the needs of families and animals in the community through the operation of a pet food bank, low-cost spay/neuter and vaccination programs, and support of animal rescue through an adoption program.
