Toward the end of the last school year, students in the Elizabethtown Area High School (EAHS) marching band learned about potential show

Christ Church Will Hold 275th Anniversary Events By Chelsea Peifer

Christ Church United Church of Christ (UCC), 247 S. Market St., Elizabethtown, has been a part of religious and civic life in Elizabethtown since 1743. To celebrate its 275th anniversary, the congregation has planned a series of events dubbed “Inspiring a Legacy of Faith” on Friday, Sept. 7, through Sunday, Sept. 9. “We’re very excited to share our anniversary events with the people of Elizabethtown. Like our Sunday services themselves, all are welcome,” said the Rev. Dr. Galen Russell III, lead pastor of Christ Church. “We want to see all our friends and neighbors here to celebrate with us.” The weekend of events will kick off with a family movie night at 7:30 p.m. See Christ Church pg 4

Golf For Hope Set For Sept. 21 By Chelsea Peifer

Hope Within Ministries’ fifth annual Golf for Hope tournament is set to take place on Friday, Sept. 21, at Deer Valley Golf Course, 101 Stoudt Road, Hummelstown. “It’s a beautifully scenic course. Golfers of all skill levels really seem to like it,” said Donita Sturgis, president and co-founder of Hope Within Ministries. Sturgis noted that one of the reasons that Hope Within hosts its event at the course each year is the excellent job that course manager Bill Wall does in running the tournament effectively. “The golfers really appreciate how well it is run,” Sturgis said. The tournament will feature a fourperson scramble format. Registration See Golf For Hope pg 7

done in the past. Having lots of circles and swirls in the drill design gave the students plenty to master as they learned and rehearsed “Fantasy” during band camp at the school from Aug. 6 to 10. Head drum major Jared Wolf said that the show came together nicely throughout the week, and Claire noted that the sections seemed to have bonded well and worked hard to master their parts. Spirit days kicked off on Monday with Fantasy Day, which included a lot of dragon and Viking costumes and witch hats as a nod to “Wicked.” Nobody dressed up like E.T., but a plush E.T. toy did make an appearance. Tuesday’s Class Color Day and Wednesday’s Disney Day both had high participation, but the drum majors reported that Camouflage Day on Thursday was not quite as popular. As is tradition, the week concluded with Section Shirt Day on Friday. Each section designs a shirt in advance to order in time for camp. The students also wear the shirts under their uniforms at the homecoming football game each fall. A water balloon battle is another tradition the marching band members take part in on Friday at the end of the day. Seniors also vote on a freshman king and queen and announce the winners at the end of camp. A macaroni crown is given to the queen and a cornstalk scepter to the king. “We play ‘Hey Baby’

and make them dance and embarrass them,” said Jared. The tradition is all in good fun, and the seniors go out of their way throughout the week to make the new band members feel included. To welcome freshmen into the band family, each senior pairs up with a freshman at the beginning of band camp for an informal mentor relationship that carries on throughout the school year. The public can catch a performance of “Fantasy” at halftime of home football games, starting when the EAHS football team competes against Donegal High School on Saturday, Aug. 25, at noon at EAHS Thompson Field, 600 E. High St., Elizabethtown. Aside from playing at football games, the EAHS marching band takes part in local parades throughout the school year, including the Bainbridge Halloween Parade, the Elizabethtown Holiday Parade, and the Elizabethtown Memorial Day Parade. The band will also perform at the Manheim Township High School “Showcase in Sight and Sound” Marching Band Festival on Saturday, Sept. 29, at 115 Blue Streak Blvd., Lancaster. In addition to Barraclough, the EAHS marching band staff includes assistant director and marching and maneuvering instructor Gerald Huesken, percussion instructor Glen Lentz, color guard instructor Mindy Sevcik, and majorette instructor Heather Hartsough.

Teal Sisters from pg 1 Kate Green, Kathy Kuhns, Maureen Lewandowski, and Connie Radziewicz are just a few of the 20-plus women who make up the Teal Sisters, a multigenerational support group for women diagnosed with ovarian cancer. After crossing paths at the office of Dr. Jacqueline Evans, a Lancaster-area gynecologic oncologist, the ladies began meeting together in 2015 on the fourth Tuesday of each month to talk and support one another. Teal is the color that symbolizes ovarian cancer, so the ladies also sport the shade for Teal Tuesdays. “We met informally at each other’s houses but decided in addition to talking about where we were and laughing, we’d (raise) some awareness, because ovarian cancer is silent,” explained Green. “But we’re not silent about it.” To jumpstart those efforts, the Teal Sisters marched in the Millersville Parade in 2017, flanked by a teal pickup truck as they handed out teal mints and lollipops and information about ovarian cancer and its symptoms. According to Lewandowski, who leads educational presentations on the topic with other Teal Sisters, ovarian cancer is usually not detected until it has progressed to stage three or four, but early detection can mean the difference between life and death. Lewandowski references the BEAT acronym provided by the NormaLeah Ovarian Cancer Initiative when teaching others about the symptoms, which include: Bloating that is persistent; Eating less, feeling fuller; Abdominal and/or back pain; and Trouble with bladder and bowels. “The big thing is if the symptom lasts for more than two weeks,” emphasized Lewandowski. Many women are unaware that a Pap test does not test for ovarian cancer; therefore, Lewandowski urges women to be their own advocate and request an ovarian cancer screening if they are experiencing any symptoms. “All of our stories are different, but every single one of us at one point said something like, ‘Well, I thought it was just fill-in-the-blank, but then it wouldn’t go away,’” said Lewandowski. “You don’t want to think you have cancer.” “Most of the people in the group have ovarian cancer, but we’d like to increase awareness for all types of gynecological cancers,” Lewandowski continued. “The

important thing for people to know is that there’s treatment. The doctors are very conscious of the quality of your time.” Green added, “Your life does not stop. I went to the China in the middle of my chemotherapy. There are options out there, and if one doesn’t work, you try something else.” The Teal Sisters make it a point to say they are “living with cancer” rather than the commonly heard alternative of “dying with cancer.” “We’re not gloom and doom,” said Radziewicz. In September, which is National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, the Teal Sisters will take part in Turn the Towns Teal, a national campaign to promote awareness of the symptoms and risk factors associated with ovarian cancer. The ladies encourage individuals, businesses, and communities throughout Lancaster and York to get involved by displaying biodegradable teal ribbons on their property. Some towns participate by turning fountains teal or lighting up buildings at night with teal spotlights. Lewandowski recalled that the Pennsylvania State Capitol was aglow in teal for the month of September last year. The Teal Sisters will be tying teal ribbons along Hellam Street in Wrightsville and, they hope, in as many other

locations as possible. To order teal ribbons and learn more about Turn the Towns Teal, readers may visit www.turnthetownsteal.org. On Friday, Sept. 7, the Teal Sisters will have an ovarian cancer awareness table at the Lancaster Barnstormers game at the team’s home stadium, 650 N. Prince St., Lancaster, and one of the members will have the chance to throw the first pitch. Individuals and organizations that would like to inquire about having the Teal Sisters give an educational presentation on the risk factors and subtle symptoms of ovarian cancer may contact Radziewicz at conniesratt@comcast.net. Pictured on front: The Teal

Sisters, represented by (from left) Kathy Kuhns, Maureen Lewandowski, Connie Radziewicz, and Kate Green, are a group of women from Lancaster and York who meet monthly to support each other as they navigate ovarian cancer. On Sept. 9, the community is invited to attend Spirit Sunday, with worship and Faith Formation at 9 a.m., fellowship at 10 a.m., and worship at 10:30 a.m. Russell’s sermon will be on the topic of

“Inspiring a Legacy of Faith.” A portion of the proceeds from all of the weekend’s events will benefit Community Place on Washington, a collaborative effort between United Elizabethtown Area Churches and community members, organizations, businesses, and social service providers to establish a centralized location for community services to serve those in need. This summer, individuals from Christ Church helped in the renovation efforts that are currently underway for Community Place on Washington. “This church has always had outreach to the local and wider community as one of its backbones,” remarked Russell, adding that church members have taken part in a mission trip every year for the last 15 years. The trips intentionally rotate between local, national, and international efforts. “Our congregation is blessed to be a part of this community and have been since we first started meeting in 1743,” stated Russell. “Our involvement with the Community Place on Washington reaffirms our commitment to the future of Elizabethtown. That’s what we mean by inspiring a legacy of faith as we go forward.” Russell also emphasizes Christ Church’s vision to practice the belief that all are welcome and to make that widely known. That vision, Russell said, coincides well with the church’s motto: “No matter who you are or where you are in life’s journey, you are welcome here.” “We truly strive to practice that,” enthused Russell.

a community health center at 4748 E. Harrisburg Pike, Elizabethtown. The faithbased center provides free primary health care to medically uninsured individuals from Lancaster, Dauphin, and Lebanon counties, as well as low-cost mental health counseling services. Sturgis said that the organization’s counseling center has been booming and additional funds are needed to continue serving the increasing number of people seeking services. Mental health counseling is provided on a self-pay, income-based sliding scale fee with no other eligibility requirements. Hope Within staff and intern therapists offer a scope of therapeutic services, including individual, couple, family, premarital, and marital therapy. Hope Within is in the process of partnering with two area colleges that offer master’s-level counseling programs in order to obtain more counselors and be able to expand and accept more individuals who are in need of mental health services. “We want to be a place of early access to help, explained Sturgis. “The wait can be long to access care. Time and cost are significant barriers, and we want to remove those and save lives. To learn more about Hope Within, readers may visit www.hopewithin.org or call 717-367-9797.
