EMS, Hospital Workers Honor Fallen Paramedic By Francine Fulton

What makes your grands so extraordinary? Bless your grandparents with an early Grandparents Day gift by sharing your answer, along with a favorite memory and/or a photo, at www.townlively.com/ grandparents-day-form/.

A tree was planted at the Northwest Emergency Medical Services (NWEMS) Elizabethtown Station on July 20 to honor paramedic Doug Zima, who passed away while on duty. In attendance were his family members, staff members from NWEMS and representatives from Penn State Hershey Medical Center, who donated the tree, along with a plaque.

Hiking In Green By Ann Mead Ash

Outdoor exercise is encouraged during COVID-19 restrictions as a way to stay healthy and positive and maybe even increase defenses against disease. Benefits of exercise may include lower cholesterol and blood pressure, while improving strength, balance, and coordination. Social distancing is usually easier when exercising outside, as well.

Your tributes will be posted on townlively.com in time for Grandparents Day, September 13!

The White Cliffs of Conoy in Marietta (left photo) and Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve (right photo) are both part of scenic hiking trails located in Lancaster County. Kristen Holloway, founder of the Facebook page Day Hikes of Lancaster County PA, combines her love of hiking and photography to share information about the trails with others.

Teenager Transforms Rocks Into Works Of Art By Francine Fulton

When most people look at a rock, they see just that - a rock. For Ashley Morgan, 14, a rock is actually a canvas on which she can paint a miniature work of art. Ashley, who is entering her freshman year at Donegal High School, enjoyed coloring as a small child as a fun way to pass the time. “When I was little, my mom used to print out pages for me to color and draw,” Ashley said. “About two years ago, I started painting on rocks. My mom wanted some (painted rocks) for her garden, and after I painted some, I found more and painted more.” The rocks, featuring various images and designs, began to get attention from neighbors, who offered Ashley a fee to paint rocks for their gardens as well. “I started selling them to people on my block,” said Ashley. “Once they started See Teenager pg 4

A Way To Honor Your Grandparents

To honor paramedic Doug Zima, who passed away while on duty, a tree was planted at the Northwest Emergency Medical Services (NWEMS) Elizabethtown Station on July 20. A plaque was also placed in front of the tree thanking Zima for his 26 years of service. The Kousa dogwood tree and plaque were donated by Penn State Hershey Medical Center (HMC). In attendance at the ceremony were Zima’s widow, Tina, and his daughter, Allison, who is an EMT at NWEMS, along with several staff members from the station and representatives from Penn State HMC. Zima, 69, died while working an EMS call in Londonderry Township on May 30. According to Lori Shenk, NWEMS community outreach manager, Zima and his EMT partner were providing direct care to a trauma patient when

Zima suddenly became ill and collapsed, suffering cardiac arrest. His EMT partner immediately began resuscitative efforts. Life Lion EMS took over care from the EMT partner and transported Zima to the Penn State HMC emergency department, where additional resuscitative efforts were continued. However, Zima was pronounced dead later that evening. Zima was a Lancaster County paramedic for 26 years, serving the majority of his time with NWEMS. “He answered his last call approximately 30 minutes prior to the end of his shift that day,” Shenk noted. The idea to plant a tree in Zima’s honor came from staff members at Penn State HMC. Melanie Weaver and Lori English, representing Penn State HMC, presented the plaque, which also includes the Paramedic’s Prayer, to the staff of NWEMS during the ceremony. See Paramedic pg 4

Hiking from pg 1 Kristen Holloway, founder of the Facebook page Day Hikes of Lancaster County PA, has always been a hiker. During the pandemic, she has been trying to hike at least weekly alone and with family members. “When I lived in San Diego, I found this book of day hikes of San Diego County,” said Holloway, who set herself a goal of visiting all the trails in the book while she lived there.

After returning to her native Lancaster County, Holloway decided a Facebook page could offer other avid hikers the same kind of information she had found in the book trails that offer beautiful scenery along with varying degrees of difficulty. “I knew there were all these great hikes, but I knew there were some I didn’t know about,” said Holloway. “I was looking for one place that had all the good hikes, so I wanted to put something together so that people would know what’s out there.”

Trails that are good for a variety of activities include the Enola Low Grade Trail, which can be accessed from a number of points in the county - the Turkey Hill Trail Head in Manor Township, Sigman Road in Pequea Township, and Fairview Road in Strasburg Township. The trail has a crushed stone surface and is a favorite of walkers. The White Cliffs of Conoy in Marietta are located along the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail, which can be accessed from Columbia, Marietta, or Bainbridge. Holloway said it is a paved trail often used for running and biking in addition to hiking. The trail, which runs along the Susquehanna River, features some abandoned buildings and the cliffs, actually remnants of a limestone quarry. “It’s a pretty overlook with the white cliffs, and you’re walking along the railroad tracks, which is kind of cool,” said Holloway. For short hikes, Holloway recommends Ray’s Woods, 44 Laurel Drive, Holtwood, and the Farmingdale Trail in Noel Dorwart Memorial Park, 408 Parklawn Court, Lancaster. For more moderately challenging hikes, Holloway recommends the loop at Steinman Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea, and combining trails at Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area, 100 Museum Road, Stevens, where she has spent up to three hours hiking. Because Holloway lives in Penn Manor School District, many of the trails she has discussed on the page are in that area. For a good workout, she heads to Kelly’s Run Nature Preserve,

reporting that that the trail is a loop of nearly 4 miles with hilly terrain. Kelly’s Run can be found at 199 Street Road, T397, Holtwood. Holloway said that hiking has been a family tradition. “My parents took us hiking a lot as kids,” she shared. “It’s fun, but it’s a good way to get exercise.” When Holloway hikes with her children, she likes to visit the Lancaster Conservancy Trout Run Nature Preserve, 215 Stump Road, Pequea (Holtwood). “Trout Run is great for those who like to play in the water,” she said. For green and shady hikes, Holloway recommends Lancaster Conservancy’s Climbers Run Nature Preserve, located off Frogtown Road, Pequea. Other scenic trails on Holloway’s list include Shenk’s Ferry Wildflower Preserve, 857 Green Hill Road South, Conestoga, in Martic Township and House Rock Nature Preserve, 370 House Rock Road, Pequea. Holloway appreciates the beauty of the outdoors during solitary ventures. “I like to hike by myself,” she said. “It’s meditative, so it’s time to be in my thoughts and be in nature. You take more in when you’re by yourself.” The Facebook page Holloway founded allows her to combine her interests in hiking and photography. “I have a list of 25 more hikes to investigate that aren’t on the page (yet),” she noted. For those who are averse to the summer heat and crowded trails, she recommends hiking in the early mornings before the sun is high and the parking lots fill up.

Teenager from pg 1 seeing how (my painting) was getting better, they (shared photos of my work) on Facebook.” This led to even more work for the young entrepreneur. “When my mom advertised one of my rocks on Facebook, a lady messaged me and asked me if I would like to (paint) her fence. She wanted something happy for people to stop by and see,” Ashley recalled. “She knew I was not a professional artist, and she thought it would be a good experience for me.” The fence that Ashley painted, located in Elizabethtown, features large flowers and birds, including a bright red cardinal. “She gave me an idea of what she wanted. She knew she wanted flowers because it reminded her of happy times, (along with) butterflies and birds,” said Ashley. “The cardinal is in honor of her dad who passed.” “For the fence, I went straight to painting,” she said, explaining that before painting rocks she sketches the image first. “The butterfly and the cardinal and one of the roses was with acrylic paint, but everything else is spray paint.” She added clear sealer to protect it from the weather. “It will be there for a long time,” she added. “I used a clear sealer that is meant for outdoor decorations. I went over it with five cans of sealer so it would stay.” Ashley also recently painted a large

boulder in a woman’s yard. The painting depicts a scene of a wolf howling at the moon. “She wanted something with a wolf because she has wolf-themed things in her yard, “Ashley noted. Ashley obtains the rocks from friends and neighbors and occasionally buys them. Recently a person let Ashley choose rocks from a home construction site. Ashley said that she would also like to expand her line of artistic endeavors in the future. “I want to be able to paint custom Halloween bags and then Christmas ornaments,” Ashley stated. “I would love something to do in the community like a mural that has a lot of detail. I (want to be) able to spread happiness and art in the community. It’s just fun for me.” Those interested in purchasing a custom-painted rock can order one from Ashley in whichever style they choose. “I supply the rocks, or if they want a particular rock, they will bring it to me,” she said. “I will look up a picture or if they send a picture they want, I will sketch it, match the paint color, paint it and seal it.” So far, many of the rocks Ashley has painted for customers feature sports team logos and small animals. Ashley’s future goal is to become a doctor. “I want to be a pediatrician. For art, I want it to be a side thing that I do as a hobby,” she said. “I always wanted to help kids and other people and find a cure for cancer, (but) art will always be with me for the rest of my life.” For more information, readers may email Ashley at laylayanne06@gmail.com. Images of the rocks can be found on the “Elizabethtown, PA” Facebook page.

“He was a friend and a colleague of ours, and here at Northwest EMS they are more than friends - they are family,” Weaver said during the ceremony. “When Doug decided to take his wings, Lori and I were there that day. We knew him and loved him, and the people he worked with wanted to give back to a person who has given so much. He was a faithful servant.” In addition to his duties with NWEMS, Zima taught for 16 years at Lancaster Catholic High School and continued to teach adult education as an EMT, CPR and medical instructor. He was involved in the Boy Scouts of America for many years, having served in the Lancaster area since his youth and as the health officer at Camp Mack for several summers. He was a member of the Masonic Order for 16 years. While employed at NWEMS, Zima primarily worked in the Elizabethtown and Maytown stations. “(We serve) 200 square miles in three counties,” noted Shenk. “It is not unusual for us to transport patients to Harrisburg, Hershey, York (and other hospitals), and (Zima) was well-known at all of the hospitals.” “He was dedicated to educating people and making a difference if someone (was having a) bad day,” she added. “(Zima’s death) was a tragic event that affected all of us greatly.” To view a video of the tree planting ceremony and Zima’s funeral procession from the fire station, readers may visit www.facebook.com/NWEMS.

Rotary Club Supports Food Bank Senior Center To Offer Meals The Elizabethtown Rotary Club recently presented a check to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB). The check for $1,300 was from Bruce Environmental and Response Management. During the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, Mark Bruce challenged the Rotary members to walk, run, bike, and swim for exercise and to report the miles trav-

eled. He pledged that for every mile he would donate $1 to the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, up to $1,000. The program, called Fitness for Fun Ones, generated more than 1,200 miles by members. The Elizabethtown Rotary Club has volunteered numerous times at the CPFB. The club will offer another service opportunity to its members on Wednesday, Sept. 2.

The Elizabethtown Area Senior Center, located in the GEARS Community Center, 70 S. Poplar St., Elizabethtown, is offering grab ’n’ go lunches, which began on Aug. 24. Meals will be cold/frozen and in a heatable tray, and lunches may be picked up at the senior center from 11 a.m. to noon on Mondays through Fridays. Meals must be ordered two days in advance; no walk-ins will be permitted. Donations for lunch

will be accepted at the door. Lunch on Thursday, Aug. 27, will be Parmesan chicken with lemon asparagus pasta, tossed salad with dressing, Italian bread, and applesauce. The meal on Friday, Aug. 28, will feature a pulled pork sandwich on a bun, Hawaiian coleslaw, ranch potatoes, and cookies. On Monday, Aug. 31, the meal will be baked bread chicken cutlet, scalloped potatoes, tomato and

cucumber salad, white bread, and fruit gelatin. The lunch on Tuesday, Sept. 1, will feature roasted pork with mushroom sauce, vegetable rice pilaf, green beans, wheat bread, and pineapple delight. On Wednesday, Sept. 2, the center will offer a tuna salad sandwich with lettuce and tomatoes on a sandwich roll, macaroni salad, a fresh orange, and three bean salad. The senior center will open on

Tuesday, Sept. 8, with limited hours and limited activities and will then be open on Mondays through Fridays. Reservations are required and must be made two days in advance. No walk-ins will be permitted. Readers may call the center at 717-367-7984. for more information about the activities or to make reservations. The program, a community service of GEARS, is funded, in part, under an agreement with money allocated by the Pennsylvani Department of Aging and the Lancaster County Office of Aging.
