In lieu of a sweet 16th birthday celebration a few years ago, Sayali Yoder opted to invite friends and family to join her in participating in the Brittany’s Hope Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk. Sayali’s parents received one of the very first adoption grants awarded by Brittany’s Hope, an Elizabethtown-based nonprofit committed to aiding orphans in crisis around the world. Born without hands and feet, Sayali went through more than 26 surgeries and lived in an orphanage until being adopted at age 3. Today, she is determined to give back to the organization that she says helped her to become who she is. Sayali faithfully trained for the 5K by taking daily walks with her boxer,

Cornerstone associate director Laurie Shepler described the 5K Run/Walk as a family-friendly event, noting that even the family dog is welcome to join in the fun. “Our show is geared for the community, and we always make sure that it’s free,” explained Marilyn Hobday, founder of Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show. As an artist and retired educator, Hobday is passionate, to say the least, about making sure that the arts continue to thrive in Lancaster and that everyone has a part in them. “We try very hard to focus on local artists, although we do have artists that come from all along the East Coast,” said Hobday. The 32nd annual Heart of Lancaster Arts and Craft Show is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 31 and Sept. 1, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. A successful singer, songwriter, recording artist, and author, he travels extensively with his wife, Anne, throughout America. While he will be appearing solo at the expo, he and his wife have performed at various Lancaster County locations in the past. As an avid outdoorsman, he notes that his primary interest is in being a hunter. His passion for engaging in what he calls “the fair chase” led to his writing many books for sportsmen and women. Along with his best-selling books involving hunting insights, he also penned a book for fathers called “10 Things I Want My Son to Know.” “Years ago, I discovered that not only can hunting yield nourishment for the body, (but) there is also food for the soul and spirit that can be gleaned in the field and woods,” he explained. “The life-changing and characterbuilding insights I’ve encountered while outdoors are the

This year’s Walk of Love Cross Country 5K and Fun Walk is set to take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at Stone Gables Estate, 1 Hollinger Lane, Elizabethtown. The family-friendly event will include a 5K, a fun walk, pony rides, an inflatable obstacle course for children, games and activities, giveaways, and food. Through adoption grants, Brittany’s Hope has united more than 1,300 children with special needs into forever families by adoption. Sahd said that the organization also actively cares for and has educated more than 2,000 children through its humanitarian programs in Vietnam, Ethiopia, and Kenya. both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. Live music will be performed by jazz band Over Easy on both days, and food and beverages will be available to purchase. The show will feature the work of 200 juried artists, including 50 newcomers. “Customers are excited about coming every year because they like both: seeing some of the same people and seeing some new artists, too,” said Hobday. “All of the people that are coming are working very hard at their art. I like to see small businesses like that thrive.” “We have a lot more 2-D art this year, which is nice. It’s not quite 50-50, but we’re getting there,” Hobday noted. “The most important thing is the diversity of merchandise that is coming.” She is also proud to have a show that offers customers artwork at a variety of price points. “I think the customers love this show because it’s affordable,” remarked Hobday. Another one of the show’s trademarks is live demonstrations, and Hobday said that 50 artists will be demonstrating their crafts for visitors this year. Balloon sculptures, metalwork, and henna tattoos are just a few of the processes that visitors will be able to get a glimpse of. This year’s featured artists are Laura Mark Finberg of Pequea, a nationally known wildlife painter; Andrew Loercher of Lancaster, who creates handmade redware pottery; and Tim Mateer of Mount Joy, an international wildlife photographer. Each of the artists will be highlighted in the free magazine available to patrons at the
information booth, where people may also enter to win drawings for gift cards to use at the show. Winners will be announced every hour. Each show applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. “We’re really good to our exhibitors. We cater to them because everyone who serves on the (show’s) committee has to be a working artist,” said Hobday, who serves as chairperson of the show ’s planning committee, which also includes Loercher, Bunny Switzenburg, Susan Quinn, Melissa Ward Carroll, and Jessica Keener. “We always try to shine light on a local charity, and this year it will be The Common Wheel,” stated Hobday. Based in downtown Lancaster, The Common Wheel offers an after-school Earn-a-Bike program that provides students ages 12 to 17 with the opportunity to fix up and keep a bicycle that they can call their own and receive training in bicycle assembly, maintenance, and safety. According to https://thecommonwheel.com, the organization also gifted bicycles to 375 children through its Holiday Bike Drive. Its Bikes For All program, which supplies low income individuals with reliable transportation via a bicycle, has had 58 beneficiaries. A donation box will be set up at the Heart of Lancaster for those interested in donating to The Common Wheel. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in the Food Bank’s 27-county service area through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance. With this grant, the food bank will scale access to SNAP among eligible households, with particular emphasis on reaching seniors. SNAP is a federal nutrition program dedicated to helping millions of people who face hunger. According to the food bank, SNAP improves food security, offers benefits that enable families to purchase healthier foods, and frees up household resources that can be used for preventative services and needed medical care. The food bank says that more than 15 percent of Americans eligible for SNAP currently do not receive this benefit, and seniors are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and barriers to SNAP access. Among seniors, 58% of eligible individuals are not enrolled in SNAP.

The AACA Library and Research Center in Hershey has announced that William T. “Tom” Gerrard has donated his extensive literature collection to the library. The library has cared for the collection since 2013, calling it the Gerrard Classic Auto Literature Collection. Gathered during a 35-year span, the collection has included many of the rarest items known to the hobby covering the 1950s and 1960s. Items include sales catalogs, brochures, color
and fabric samples, shop manuals, wiring diagrams, dealer binders, filmstrips, slides and more. The formal transfer of ownership occurred in early 2019. Gerrard has had a long-standing relationship with the AACA Library and Research Center, which is why he originally offered the large collection to the center on a long-term loan. Each item in the Gerrard Classic Auto Collection has been digitized, cataloged and made readily
accessible in hard copy or electronic format at the AACA Library and Research Center. The library, located at 501 W. Governor Road, Hershey, is free and open to the public from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Mondays through Saturdays. The donation will further the AACA Library’s mission of connecting people with primary sources pertaining to automotive history. For more information, readers may visit www.aacalibrary.org.

This year’s judges - Sue Bowman, Michael Firestine, and Katie Werner - selected Alyssa Neff as queen and Abigail O’Shell as first runner-up. Renaissance Faire Supports Community Groups Church Holds Seminary Graduation
The Lancaster PA Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints recently honored the 2019 Seminary graduating class, which included (from left) Julia Hartman, Joshua Perkins, Maia Knudson, Gabriel Rodriguez, Lydia Jackson, John Patterson, Bronwyn Meldrum, and (not pictured) Tarren McGladrie. The Lancaster PA Stake of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints graduated its 2019 senior seminary class on May 26. The students had completed four years of early-morning religious study. Each student received a diploma, signifying that he or she had completed studying the Bible, the Book of Mormon, The Pearl of Great Price, and the Doctrine and Covenants. The students included John Patterson, Joshua Perkins, and Gabriel Rodriguez from the York Ward; Julia Hartman, Maia Knudson, and Tarren McGladrie from the West York Ward; Lydia Jackson from the Dover Branch; and Bronwyn Meldrum from the Elizabethtown Ward. Conducting the service was Stake supervisor Jeffrey Shoemaker of York.
Speakers included seminary graduates Meldrum and Hartman and Institute representative Audrey McBride, who is a past seminary graduate. Music was provided by pianist Joseph Patterson, with special musical selections by Lydia Jackson, accompanied by Dusty Jackson, and Katelyn Pilsner and True Herbert, accompanied by Melanie Pilsner. Also attending was the seminary and institute regional coordinator, Adam M. McBride of Lancaster, who presented the graduates to Lancaster PA Stake president Conrad Knudson of York. Knudson accepted the graduates with remarks of encouragement and congratulations. Awarding of diplomas and certificates followed.
The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire, 2775 Lebanon Road, Manheim, hosted its annual Red Cross blood drive on Aug. 10 and 11. This year’s drive exceeded the goal to collect 148 units by collecting 198 donations. These donations will be able to help 594 people in need of blood. Each guest who donated at the drive received a complimentary ticket to the 2019 Renaissance Faire season. More than 3,400 units of blood have been collected at past Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire blood drives. The next weekend, Aug. 17 and 18, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire welcomed beneficiaries of
nonprofit organizations to the festivities with free admission. Approved beneficiaries included 501(c)(3) religious, educational, or charitable organizations. The organization applied through the Renaissance Faire’s website for the complimentary admission and were reviewed and approved based on financial need. The Renaissance Faire has distributed more than 6,500 tickets for the 2019 Community Outreach Program. On the same weekend, beneficiaries of local libraries also enjoyed free admission through the Renaissance Faire’s annual Library Program. Young readers earned a free ticket by completing
the task set by their local library. The Renaissance Faire provided 3,000 tickets to the libraries. On Saturday, Aug. 31; Sunday, Sept. 1; and Monday, Sept. 2, the Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire will offer a discounted admission price to active and retired members of the military and those who serve as police officers, firefighters, and emergency medical services personnel, as well as members of veteran organizations, and their immediate family members, with a valid service identification. The Renaissance Faire will also honor six heroes in each day’s Finale In Song’s Royal Honor Ceremony. The honorees
were selected through an earlier nomination process. The Pennsylvania Renaissance Faire is held from 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Saturdays, Sundays, and Labor Day Monday through Sunday, Oct. 27. Separate admission fees have been set for adults and for children ages 5 to 11. Parking is free. Games, rides, foods, beverages, and merchant wares have additional costs. Readers may visit www.PaRenFaire.com for complete show details, menus, merchant listings, and additional information. Discount advance tickets are available at www.parenfaire.com.
