year’s event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 1 and 2, at Root’s Country Market, 705 Graystone Road, Manheim. Admission and parking are both free, and the outdoor show will take place rain or shine. For Marilyn Hobday, founder and chairperson of the Heart of Lancaster Art and Craft Show, ensuring that each of the artists makes his or her own work is crucial. Each applicant must submit a detailed report on how his or her products are made in order to make sure that the show’s selection is an honest representation of handmade arts and crafts. Many of the 200 exhibitors are from the local area, with others traveling from all along the East Coast. Forty-five of the juried artists are brand new to the 2018 show. Fifty artists will be demonstrating how their items are made, such as newcomer Topaz Martofel, who uses balloons to create entire unique structures and rooms. Basket weaver Joan Betzold and photographer Keith Grebinger have been selected as this year’s featured artists and will be highlighted in the free magazine
available to patrons at the show’s information booth in aisle one. Betzold hails from Bel Air, Md., and has been a basket weaver and weaving teacher for more than 25 years. She creates designs, dyes the fibers, and weaves original baskets using ancient techniques without using nails, glue, or staples and is well known for incorporating unusual items into her baskets. Grebinger, who was born and raised in Lancaster, fell in love with the art of photography while attending Manheim Township High School and has more than 35 years of experience in the field, including shooting in 47 states and eight countries. His love of nature is reflected in his landscape photography. Another important factor in planning the show for Hobday is having artwork at a variety of price points available for patrons - many of whom have been attending since the show first began. In addition to perusing quality arts and crafts, attendees may purchase a variety of food and enjoy live music by Over Easy, a Lancaster-area trio specializing in light pop favorites. At the information booth, folks may
enter to win drawings for gift cards. Winners will be announced every hour. “I love the show. It’s like a new show for me every year when I go,” remarked Hobday. “This is our 31st anniversary, and that’s just unbelievable to me.” Hobday and other organizers are also celebrating the fact that Heart of Lancaster has once again been named one of the Top 200 Best Shows in the Country by a magazine for crafters. “We’ve had really good attendance and quality vendors. They have a thousand other shows they could go to, but they choose us,” Hobday reflected. “It’s all about the community. It’s free, and we love that everybody can come and enjoy it.” Each year, a local charity is chosen to receive donations from the event. A donation box will be set up for those interested in donating toward this year’s nonprofit organization, the Columbia Animal Shelter. The shelter was the dream of the late Judy McKonly, who passed away in 2017. Her family has set out to fulfill that dream and McKonly’s wish to save the lives of at-risk animals. White Oak COB. Interested individuals are asked to sign up for the meal and the historical tour by Sunday, Sept. 2, by contacting Linda Bruckhart at 717-475-7731 or glbruckhart@gmail.com. According to Fitzkee, Brethren had settled in Rapho and Mount Joy townships, near where the present church building is located, by the early to mid-1700s. Initially, those Brethren worshipped in homes. The first meetinghouse was built on the site of the present church building in 1856. Chiques divided from White Oak to become an independent congregation in 1868, and the congregation’s territory initially extended from what is now Route 72/Manheim Pike west to the Susquehanna River, with Sunday worship rotating among various locations to share the burden of travel. In 1902, Chiques divided once again, forming three daughter churches - East Fairview COB in Manheim, Elizabethtown COB, and West Green Tree COB in Mount Joy Township. Since its beginning, Chiques COB has been served by a nonsalaried, plural ministry, in which bi-vocational ministers are called

He guides a team of six ministers and 13 deacons who provide pastoral care and administrative leadership. The congregation began the yearlong anniversary observance with an April historical service that followed a style of worship modeled after 19th-century Brethren practices. Anniversary events are being planned by the committee of Fitzkee, Bruckhart, chairperson Mark Brubaker, Nancy Brandt, and Denise Hess.

One of the Lions’ main focuses is helping those with vision problems, including those with diabetes, which Lerch said is the leading cause of blindness today. The Elizabethtown Lions Club also provides direct support to both the Rheems and Elizabethtown fire departments, Community Cupboard of Elizabethtown, and Elizabethtown Community Housing and Outreach Services (ECHOS). Lerch credited the local businesses that sponsor the annual Cruise-In and Chicken Barbecue with providing pivotal support to make it all possible. takes on a (a child’s life is symbolized by the black outfits when that) innocence is ripped away. In the fourth movement, (the white gowns represent the) afterlife.” A Chinese lantern will be released to symbolize the soul’s journey to heaven. Lyle noted that the partnership with Mini-THON is an attempt to do something meaningful as a school community. The band leaders hope to create educational and fundraising opportunities for Mini-THON at football games and at the LCHS exhibition show. The band will perform in the Manheim Township, Ephrata, and McCaskey high school’s showcases, as well as its own. The marchers practiced the drill for three weeks in August, meeting the evenings of Aug. 4 through 9 and 21 through 23, as well as during band camp, which was held from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. on Aug. 13 through 16 and 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Aug 17. Lyle expressed that she hopes the message of the show will resonate with audience members. “Everyone has known someone cancer has affected,” she said. “This year (our show will focus on) something that affects the entire community to raise awareness and band together to fight the problem (of childhood cancer).” Pictured on front: Lancaster Catholic High School band leaders (from left) Megan Lyle, Abby Francis, Katy Arnold, Rebecca Ressel, Sebastian Clemmer, Cate Lopez, and Erik Graybill worked with about 50 other band members to master the fall drill, called “This World of Words and Meanings,” during band camp, which was held at the school in August.

Student leaders of the Lancaster Catholic High School (LCHS) marching band were excited to be partnering with the school’s Mini-THON organization, which supports Four Diamonds at Penn State Hershey Children’s Hospital. “(The) theme (of the show) follows a child going through cancer,” explained Megan Lyle, marching band president and brass music section leader. The seven-minute fall drill, themed “This World of Words and Meanings,” will utilize four pieces of music to represent four stages of a child’s journey with cancer. The pieces will also symbolize the qualities represented by each of the four diamonds, acording to a story written by Christopher Millard, a young cancer patient in whose memory Four Diamonds was founded. “Appalachian Spring” by Aaron Copland will represent strength, and the second movement, “String Quartet in F Major” by Maurice Ravel will symbolize honesty. Courage will be represented by “Baba Yaga” by Modest Mussorgsky, and “On and On and On” by Wilco will be symbolic wisdom. On the field, the more than 50 members of the band will perform a drill that will tell the story along with the music. “The drill starts with a lot of soft, curved lines and interchanging swirls,” said Rebecca Ressel, band vice president and brass marching section leader, who added that the opening has a
bright, happy feeling. “As the drill moves on, it becomes sharper and more angular and the show gets darker,” added Ressel. According to student director Sebastian Clemmer, by the second movement, audience members will detect that there is trouble. “By the third piece it is very harsh,” said Clemmer. Katy Arnold, spiritual life director, public relations coordinator, and percussion section member, was quick to point out that there is a moment of hope in the third movement when the music returns to the opener for a measure. Clemmer noted that although the third piece ends with the child dying, sadness does not prevail. “The end of the fourth movement is calm and uplifting (because) there’s a chance for redemption,” Clemmer said. Lyle explained, “The fourth movement follows the theme of (an afterlife). It’s really the beginning of something better.” Some of the lyrics to “On and On and On” will be sung by pit section leader Abby Francis. The color guard will play an important role in the drill, symbolizing the physical embodiment of the child. Color guard member Kaite Graybill will play the child, and Hillary Zink will play cancer, performing with a saber. “In the beginning all five color guard are dressed like children with teddy bears,” explained Arnold. Ressel added that the color guard members will then remove their flowing dresses to reveal tight black suits, which they will wear until the final movement when they will don white gowns. “They begin by representing a child in its innocence,” said Lyle. “The toll cancer

Tamburro Named To Dean’s List
A group of volunteers recently raised $57,000 for Off the Streets. Volunteers for Off the Streets work to help neighbors in Lancaster communities move out of temporary living arrangements, such as hotels and shelters, and into permanent housing. At an April luncheon at Lancaster Country Club called Our Thing in Spring, the committee garnered sponsorships, cash donations, in-kind gifts and auction items to raise the funds. Proceeds will go directly to helping men, women and children pay their security deposit and first month’s rent so they may move into homes. Since 2013, Off the Streets has helped more than 1,500 people, 80 percent of whom are women and children. The organization works through the United Way to garner referrals; clients must be financially able to sustain rent payments. In addition to assisting with security deposits, Off the Streets provides home furnishings and meets basic living needs to get individuals and families started. The organization especially needs volunteers to help with moves. Founded by Michael Oles, a church deacon, Off the Streets began in Danbury, Conn., in 2009. Since 2013, it has been operating in Lancaster; Bridgeport, Conn.; and Huntington Beach, Calif. It is a nonprofit organization that has no paid staff and receives no government money. For more information, readers may visit www.offthestreet snow.com/lancaster or www.face book.com/offthestreetslancaster/.

august 20-25, 2018 Elizabethtown Fair president Kenneth Myer welcomed crowds to the 45th annual fair under clear skies on the evening of Aug. 20, reminding those in attendance that the event is an American and Elizabethtown tradition made possible by a generous community. Rain and muddy grounds did not seem to put a damper on the excitement that filled the air throughout the week as tens of thousands of people spent time at the fair, which continued through Aug. 25 and marked the official start of fair season in Lancaster County. In conjunction with opening night, the 2018 Elizabethtown Fair Queen Scholarship Competition took place on the freshly completed Kiwanis Stage with master of ceremonies Galla, of husband-and-wife musical duo Dan & Galla. Each of the five young ladies competing for the crown shared speeches on the subject of “Why You Should Come to My Fair” and answered randomly selected questions. Judges Jessica Armacost, Sue Bowman, and Michael Firestine selected
Madison Shaw as queen and Kayla Azaroff as first runner-up. Madison, the daughter of Angela Shaw of Fishing Creek Valley, is currently in her senior year as a homeschooling student dually enrolled in classes at HACC. She has been actively involved in 4-H since age 5, completing projects with rabbits, poultry, dairy cows, horses, sheep, and goats as well as family living projects such as canning, weaving, and knitting. She designs and creates finished garments using fiber from her own animals. Madison serves on the National 4-H Youth Design Team for the National 4-H Congress that is set to take place in November in Atlanta. After graduation, Madison plans to attend Pennsylvania State University to major in animal sciences and minor in poultry or dairy science. Kayla, the daughter of Andre and Linda Azaroff of Elizabethtown, is a senior at Elizabethtown Area High School. She is a member of her class council, Model UN, and choir and volunteers at various
local animal shelters. Her post-graduation plans include attending college to major in political science and minor in communications. Following the queen contest, the band Laredo took the stage to entertain audiences with country music. Live entertainment on the main stage throughout the week included The Josh Squared Band, The Uptown Band, an Elvis tribute featuring Jeff Krick Jr., Flamin’ Dick and the Hot Rods, Nomad, and Chris Higbee. On Wednesday morning, as part of Senior Citizens’ Day, the winners of the 2018 Elizabethtown Senior King and Queen were announced on Stage 2. Vincent Caradello of Elizabethtown was named the king, and Deb Rinker of Enola was selected as queen. They each received a shirt, a hat, and a $100 cash prize. During the week, fairgoers enjoyed live animal exhibits, as well as produce, crafts, and baked goods displays. The petting zoo, sponsored by The Merchandiser, was a popular stop for visitors to hold rabbits, watch baby chicks hatch, and pet baby goats, lambs, calves, and donkeys. Hundreds of children and adults participated in an assortment of contests, ranging from livestock competitions to tests of

In July, Main Street Mount Joy (MSMJ) welcomed Dave Schell as its new executive director. W hile the position may be new to him, serving the Mount Joy community has been a staple of Schell’s life since moving to the area a few decades ago, and area residents will likely recognize his face. “I’ve been interested in the economic development and success of Mount Joy for about 20 years,” shared Schell, who served on the MSMJ board for several years - most recently as vice president. MSMJ is a charitable organization focused on downtown revitalization and funded by the Mount Joy Borough, local business sponsors, and various grants, as well as proceeds from community events it hosts. A former Mount Joy Chamber of Commerce president, Schell was also involved with
REACH, a predecessor program to MSMJ, and watched that program flourish and change into MSMJ. He has assisted with MSMJ’s website and technical support since the organization’s inception in addition to running his own web design company and working with business owners on marketing, business strategy, promotion, and business consulting. “As a local business owner, the success of the town is very important to me. I know several business owners and their families,” said Schell. “It seemed like a natural fit for me to move into this position.” Working with many of the business owners along Main Street over the years and getting to know their families has made Schell all the more eager to see each one succeed. “The ones I don’t know personally, I want to know. Mount Joy is unique because of the business owners and their deep roots in this com-
munity,” explained Schell. “I’ve learned there is a very large family tree in Mount Joy, and they are quick to add you to their branches. We are also unique because we have large villagetype neighborhood areas surrounding our downtown. I want the residents to come downtown to see what we offer.” Schell would like to enhance the successful events that MSMJ already plans, as well as add some new things into the mix. According to Schell, this summer’s Taste of Mount Joy Cruisin’ Cuisine event on July 28 was “the biggest car show we’ve ever had.” He added, “We had 257 vehicles, and we’re talking about how to expand it for next year.” Plans are already underway for perennially popular events such as Blues, Brews, and Barbecue in September and Winterfest in December - to continue. Schell is brainstorming ideas for new events too, such as a Halloween party for adults See New Director pg 19

Each MSMJ event is coordinated by a team of volunteers, and new volunteers are always welcome. “The more volunteers we have, the more we can do,” added Schell. In the case of Fourth Fridays, which Schell said were initially a hit, he envisions evolving the concept to highlight local artists, musicians, and bands. Schell has already begun spotlighting the Mount Joy art scene by inviting local artists to showcase their work in one of the large window displays in front of the MSMJ office at 55 E. Main St. “ We’re already booked out until July 2019,” said Schell with a smile. “It’s amazing how many people stop by and look and linger.” Each artist will have access to the space for one month, and interested individuals are welcome

Inaugural Golf Tournament To Benefit BCS
SALE OF BUILDING MATERIALS
By Ann Mead Ash
MONDAY, SEPT. 3, 2018
More than 20 years ago, a group of Christian men began taking a golf excursion that involved Bible study. Dubbed Bibles and Bogeys, the yearly event led to six attendees forming a weekly Bible study group that meets at a local restaurant early each Friday morning. About two years ago, group member Tom Despard turned to fellow member Neil McCauley and asked if he would like to help organize a benefit golf tournament. “I said, ‘Are you crazy?’” recalled McCauley, pointing to the plethora of golf tournaments held in the area. However, McCauley soon changed his mind about the effort. “Tom told me about Safe Families for Children (a ministry of Bethany Christian Services (BCS)), and I said, ‘I am in,’” shared McCauley. The resulting golf tournament, named the Bethany Charity Golf Classic, will be held on Wednesday, Sept. 26, at Foxchase Golf Club, 300 Stevens Road, Stevens. Registration will begin at 11 a.m. A shotgun start will be held at 12:30 p.m., and the awards presentation dinner, which will feature crab cakes and chicken, will start at 5:30 p.m. The competition can accommodate 144 golfers. Despard is well-acquainted with the work of BCS, having been involved with the ministry in a number

In the PAC-MAT model of treatment, an addiction specialist physician is at the center of the hub, providing expert guidance and support to primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas of the state. Serving as the spokes, primary care physicians provide direct patient care, including the medication-assisted treatment prescription. Patients also are connected to drug and alcohol counseling in their communities. These grants are funded through the second 21st Century CURES grant, a $26.5 million federal grant the state received to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic by increasing access to treatment, reducing unmet treatment need, and reducing opioid overdose-related deaths through the provision of prevention, treatment, and recovery activities for substance-use disorder. The UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery is a comprehensive addiction clinic. The center connects individuals facing an opioid use disorder to treatment through the use of medication assisted treatment. For more information, readers may visit www.upmcpinnacle.com.

Unger. “It is fully funded by donations and grants.” To make the golf tournament stand out, members of the group have worked to create special contests for the event. “We are doing some unique things to make this a little different from the average (golf outing),” noted McCauley, adding that the goal is to make the outing fun without being too quirky. One example of an unusual activity will include having some old-style hickory stick golf clubs at one hole, along with a video camera. “We will
UPMC Pinnacle was one of three state organizations named to receive a PAC-MAT grant to help battle the state’s opioid addiction crisis. With PAC-MAT funding, UPMC Pinnacle will strengthen its current medical-assisted treatment (MAT) and case management services to patients within the health system’s outpatient sites in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties. UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery, 2501 N. Third St., Harrisburg, will serve as the hub and bring together primary, secondary, and tertiary care providers, as well as community and hospital administration members, to build on an addiction treatment program that increases access to care, reduces health care costs, and improves quality. This will include increasing drug and alcohol screenings within the broader network of providers, creating a Care Map for patients to research care patterns, establishing a community network of case management support, and broadening the use of MAT throughout the region by breaking down stigmas and barriers to care.

of volunteer positions for 30 years, including serving as past national board chair. He noted that BCS chapters nationwide hold golf tournaments to raise funds. When Despard told members of the Bible study group about Safe Families for Children, they became dedicated to the cause. Safe Families is a ministry that helps parents experiencing a crisis by providing a Christian host family to care for their children until they can be reunited. The program has been shown to be much less costly than utilizing the foster care system, and in most cases, the children are returned to their family. Mark Unger, BCS regional director, said that BCS offers two programs to help children in crisis in Lancaster County. “One is a prevention program to prevent children from having to go into foster care, and the other is Safe Families,” said Unger. McCauley noted that he and other members of the Bible study, including Dixon Miller, Allen Lafferty, Rob Lukowski, and Will Charles, are committed to the cause of Safe Families. “It’s about keeping the families together,” he said. “We all know families can get into crisis, (and Safe Families) gives the parents or grandparents a timeout.” The goal of the golf tournament is to raise $70,000 to cover a funding cut gap that BCS recently suffered. “Safe Families does not produce revenue,” explained
