Brittany’s Hope Sets Social Distance 5K By Francine Fulton
In lieu of its annual Walk of Love Cross Country 5K, Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that helps orphaned children around the world, will instead hold the Brittany’s Hope Social Distance 5K on Saturday, Sept. 19, at The Barn at Stone Gables in Elizabethtown. The change, which was made due to the coronavirus

pandemic, will adhere to all CDC social distancing and safety guidelines, while also raising money for the charity. The race will have a time trial type setup that will allow runners to start individually or in small groups of associated participants such as family members or people who live together. Designated start times will begin at 7:30 a.m. and run through 10:30 a.m. Participants will be able to run safely in a chip-timed, time-segmented race. “Basically, it will be a rolling start,” explained Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director. “A runner will make a reservation online for a time to begin.” She noted that runners must stay in their cars until 10 minutes before they race. Runners will be able to pick up their bibs containing the timing chip at the starting line not more than five minutes before their start time. The 5K course will be a cross-country style that includes paved trails and trails through the woods. The course, which will be clearly marked, is a different course from past years. Additionally, runners will have on-course passing restrictions. Upon completing their run and crossing the finish line, participants must return to their vehicles. See Brittany s Hope pg 7

locations of the globe as a platform to share the Gospel with unreached indigenous people groups. Interested readers are invited to visit FIA’s Middletown headquarters, located at 3950 E. Harrisburg Pike, by appointment to select free supplies. They may browse items left over from construction projects as well as donated yard sale items. These supplies include chairs, tables, bicycles, small furniture, books, mechanical items, and household items. With materials secured, participants can work at home using their eye for style and some elbow grease to turn these leftovers into something new. See FIA pg 2
It comes as no surprise that we continue to face many of the challenges we have experienced over the past six months. Who hasn’t used the word “uncertainty” more times than they can count? Despite this uncertainty, we have worked hard to keep our families and community safe while providing positive, creative ways to reinforce that we are in this together. We encourage you to continue sharing your stories and connecting with us on social media so we can go on spreading all the good we see in this world. At Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC), we are committed to making adjustments within the current circumstances to try to continue to regularly provide you with the community news you expect to read in this paper. Community members are invited to visit FIA’s Middletown headquarters to select free supplies, such as bicycles, that they may use to assemble creations that will be sold to benefit FIA’s international mission work. While the television show challenges participants to turn trash into treasure to compete for a cash prize, the FIA version will instead ask participants to donate their finished creations to sell in support of FIA’s international mission work. All donated projects will be featured at a large sale hosted at the FIA headquarters on Saturday, Oct. 3, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. In the case of rain, the sale will be moved inside a warehouse facility on the property. Participants are asked to take before, during, and after photos as they work on their creation. Completed projects can be delivered before the sale
to FIA’s headquarters by appointment on weekdays from 8 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., or they may be dropped off on Oct. 3. In addition to the “Flea Market Flip” style creations, multiple-family yard sale items, as well as hot dogs, baked goods, and beverages, will be available to purchase. All proceeds will go toward the purchase of a track skid steer to assist in loading trucks and supplies for infrastructure projects to benefit indigenous people groups in remote areas of the globe. To learn more or to schedule a time to select project materials, readers may contact Paul Brosey at 717-629-7328 or paulbrosey@fiaintl.org.

The Giant Company announced that flu vaccinations are now available at all 132 Giant and Martin’s Food Markets in-store pharmacies. New this flu season, Giant and Martin’s pharmacists will also offer drive-up flu vaccinations in select store parking lots from Sunday, Sept. 13, through Saturday, Oct. 17. Patients may pull into a spot in a designated area of the store parking lot and be vaccinated without leaving their car. For customers who cannot be safely vaccinated from inside their vehicle or for walk-up customers, seating will be available. Social distancing measures will be in place if more than one patient is being served. Store locations offering drive-up flu vaccinations, as well as the dates and times, are available at www.giantfood stores.com/flushot or www.martinsfoods.com/flu shot. In addition to the drive-up
flu vaccinations, customers can visit any in-store pharmacy to receive their vaccination now. Giant and Martin’s pharmacies offer several types of flu shots for children, adults and seniors. Most insurance plans cover flu shots at $0 copays, including Medicare Part B. Flu shots are administered by immunizing Giant and Martin’s pharmacists, subject to state regulations. No appointment is needed for the in-store and drive-up vaccinations. To find the nearest Giant or Martin’s pharmacy, readers may visit www.giantfood stores.com or www.martins foods.com or download the free Giant or Martin’s Pharmacy app. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) recommends that everyone six months and older get a flu vaccination. risk for complications from the flu. These groups include people with diabetes, pregnant women, adults over 65, children under 5, those with asth-
ma and other chronic lung diseases, those with kidney and liver disorders, heart disease patients and those with compromised immune systems.

sale. This is the Friends’ major fundraising event. Last year, the group donated more than $20,000 to the library. “They use it for whatever they need,” Hench said, noting that in the past the money was used to buy books and run children’s programming such as story times and movie nights. Items sold at the upcoming sale will be those gleaned from the library collection and those donated by the public. “Its 90% donations,” Hench said. “ We sort year-round. When we built the new library, we got a large sorting room. With COVID, we have to let (book donations) sit for two or three days.” The Friends also operate a bookstore within the library. “We have a large children’s section and a large history section,” said Hench. Also offered for sale are paintings, jewelry and clothes for 18-inch dolls. Even though the building was closed, library staff members worked throughout the stay-athome order. “We were the only

Mini Golf Tournament Will Support MHALC By Ann Mead Ash
Lisa Alcala is passionate about dispelling the stigma that is sometimes attached to mental health, especially among young people. “A thing I really feel is important is educating children in school that mental health is a medical issue,” said Lisa. “(Having a mental health issue) doesn’t mean you’re different. It just means you have something that needs to be treated.” Lisa, who owns The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf, 662 S. Oak St., Manheim, with her husband, Ray, believes that treatment for a mental health issue should not be viewed any differently than needing vision correction. “If you have an eye problem, you go to the doctor to get glasses,” she said. “I think kids need to hear that (connection) a lot. It makes it real.” Back in February, Lisa contacted Mental Health America of
Lancaster County (MHALC) to see how she could help promote an enhanced understanding of mental health in children and teenagers. One result of that connection will be a Mini Golf Tournament held at The Shack on Saturday, Sept. 19. All funds raised by the tournament, which can accommodate a total of 76 players, will go to MHALC to help promote mental health through advocacy, education, and support. Golfers may check in for the tournament at 9:30 a.m. that day. The tournament will start at 10 a.m. A heavy rain date has been set for Saturday, Sept. 26. According to Lisa, the 19-hole course has been called “the most challenging course in Lancaster County.” “The best score here has been a 58,” she said, noting that most people score in the 80s. The tournament will be in a scramble format with a shotgun
start. “A shotgun start is when everybody is assigned a hole, and they all start at the same time,” said Lisa. “(Players) keep their ball and finish all the holes.” She also explained that in a scramble, all the players play from the best spot. “Everyone moves their ball to that spot (after the first shot),” she said. Prizes will include trophies and cash for the top three players and a closest-to-the-hole prize. “We will pick a hole and someone will be out there to measure who is closest on the first shot,” Lisa said. There will also be door prizes and opportunities to purchase meal packages ahead of the tournament day. Some of the sponsors for the tournament include Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc.; Kegel’s Produce; Cain’s Lanes; Border Magic of Lancaster; Kinetics of Windstream; and Kreider Farms. In addition, Kreider Farms has donated mugs, shirts, and hats, and Cain’s Lanes has donated bowling games for door prizes. “If anyone from the community has door prizes to donate, they can reach out (to us),”
said Lisa. Lisa noted that she has always had a strong desire to get involved with MHALC in some capacity. “My life has been touched by (mental health issues) in multiple areas,” she shared. “I just feel like it’s an underrepresented cause.” Lisa sees the tournament as an opportunity to raise awareness. “I don’t think people realize all the resources they have for people with mental health issues,” she stated. A former educator, Lisa was also involved in an MHALC focus group that she hopes will be working with area schools. “(The group) had some great ideas about introducing curriculum and ways to reach students,” she said. Individuals and teams of two to four players may register by searching for “The Shack Restaurant & Mini Golf” on Facebook and purchasing tickets for the Benefit Mini Golf Tournament. More information about the course may be found at www.theshack manheim.com. Readers who have questions may call 717-664-2250.

Sahd emphasized that the race will have a cap of 300 participants. “ We are confident that we can do it in a safe manner,” she noted. Because of health and safety precautions, there will be no games, activities, lunch or fun walk this year. “On a typical year, we attracted close to 400 runners. It’s a big event,” said Sahd. “Close to 1,000 people came because in the past we had activities and games, a petting zoo and lunch and people picnicked there. It was an event that was highly anticipated by the community.” People can also participate in a virtual fun walk that weekend. “Whether walking 1 or 2 miles, we encourage families to get out and walk, run or bike together the weekend of Sept. 19,” Sahd said. People may complete the distance anytime between Friday, Sept. 18, and Sunday, Sept. 20, and submit their time, activity and picture. Proceeds from race and virtual fun walk registration fees will directly benefit Brittany’s Hope, which was founded in 1999 as part of an effort to facilitate adoptions of special needs children from around the world by issuing adoption grants to assist families with the costs associated with

Local women are invited to attend a one-day Ladies Conference on Saturday, Sept. 12, from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Wrightsville Assembly of God, 365 Orange St., Wrightsville. The event is free and open to all women age 18 and over. The first-time event will feature breakfast and talks by guest speaker Stephanie Randolph. Lunch will be provided. According to conference organizers, the goal of the event is for ladies to come together for a day of fellowship and spiritual refreshing. The theme of the conference, “Strength and Dignity,” comes from Proverbs 31:25, which states, “Strength and dignity are her clothing and her position is strong and secure; and she smiles at the future (knowing that she and her family are prepared).” “That verse is the heart of the conference. It speaks about women using the words ‘strength’ and ‘dignity,’” said pastor Aaron McNatt. “We’ve never (hosted a women’s conference) before, but I think the women in our church are excited about it. I am hearing a lot of

The women’s ministry takes part in Bible study and fellowship activities and helps with practical needs of church members such as providing meals to parishioners in need. To register for the conference, readers may visit www.wrightsvillechurch.com/co nference. More information is also available by searching for the event page, “Strength & Dignity: One Day Ladies Conference,” on Facebook. In addition to the ladies conference, the church will host a church leaders’ conference titled “The Change Conference” on Tuesday, Sept. 15, from 9 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. The virtual conference will be geared toward ministers and church leaders. “Last year was our first year, and we had the conference in Irwin, near Pittsburgh,” said McNatt, who is a coach with The Change Group, an organization that provides leadership programs for pastors attempting to revitalize their churches. “It was single event at a single location. This year, we will be across eight states with regional
hosts, (including Wrightsville Assembly of God).” The conference will feature speakers from throughout the United States, including Annie F. Downs, internationally known speaker, author and podcast host. “I would encourage people to tell their pastors about it and tell their leaders about it,” McNatt said. “(They) can come over and enjoy some great conversation and hear from great leaders across the nation. They will speak specifically to this audience.” A fee will be charged to attend the conference. For more details and to register, readers may visit www.thechange group.org/conference.

Randolph will present Session 1 at 10:30 a.m., followed by lunch at noon. Session 2 will begin at 1:30 p.m. The speaker sessions will be held in the church sanctuary. “They will follow the same protocols we follow on Sunday,” McNatt noted. “Seating will be spaced out and masks are suggested.” Randolph has served in a variety of ministry areas, working with people of various ages and ethnic groups in Christian schools and churches for the past 27 years. Currently serving at New Life Assembly of God in Lancaster, Randolph leads ROOTED, the fifth- and sixthgrade ministry; directs the youth drama team; and works in the church office as the executive assistant.
