Cornerstone Youth Center 5K Set For Sept. 29 By Chelsea Peifer
People of all ages are invited to support the youths in the local community at the annual Cornerstone Youth Center 5K Run/Walk on Saturday, Sept. 29, at Masonic Village, 1 Masonic Drive, Elizabethtown. “As a runner it’s a really great event to come back to every fall,” said Jesse Myers, who has been participating in the event since it began six years ago. Myers and Fred Garber shared about their experiences in the video “A Tale of Two 5Kers,” which may be viewed at www.cornerstoneetown.org/5K. Garber ran the 5K for the first time last year. “I just wanted to try it and see if I could get it done,” said Garber, adding that he was the last one to cross the finish line, but that was OK. Seeing all of the people who came together to support Cornerstone was encouraging to Garber, who was involved with the
ministry when it first began. “Come enjoy and support the ministry as you do the 5K,” Garber said. To register in advance, interested individuals may visit www.corner stoneetown.org/5K. Those who register by Wednesday, Sept. 19, will receive a T-shirt. Discounted rates are available for youth groups, such as churches or sports teams. To receive special group registration rates, readers may call 717-367-0000, ext. 1. Folks who may not be able to run or walk the course but would still like to support Cornerstone can sponsor a participant by clicking on the “Crowdrise” link at www.cornerstoneetown.org/5K and following the instructions. Cornerstone associate director Laurie Shepler noted that this feature was added this year at the request of numerous individuals. Race packet pickup will be offered See Cornerstone 5K pg 10
The annual Cornerstone Youth Center 5K Run/Walk, complete with a Kids’ Fun Run, door prizes, and pulled pork and chicken barbecue meals, is planned for Sept. 29 at Masonic Village.
The Edible Classroom Takes Root New Path To Host Sportsmen Dinner At Schools Around County By Chelsea Peifer
Park Elementary School in Columbia is one of nine schools in the Lancaster area that The Edible Classroom has partnered with to develop and sustain learning gardens. Through experiential learning, the nonprofit organization aims to teach children about where food comes from and involve them in the process of planting, tending, and harvesting gardens. By Chelsea Peifer
What was once a segment of underused pavement beside the playground at Park Elementary School in Columbia has transformed into a thriving garden this year as The Edible Classroom brought students and volunteers together to
plant, tend, and harvest fresh food. Grace Julian and Beth Horst, who cofounded The Edible Classroom as a nonprofit organization in March, had been facilitating student gardening programs separately at their children’s elementary schools in the Penn Manor School District for years before they See The Edible Classroom pg 7
On Saturday, Sept. 15, New Path Community Church will host the second annual Hunt and Gather Sportsmen Dinner in the gymnasium at Mount Calvary Christian School, 629 E. Holly St., Elizabethtown. Doors will open at 4:30 p.m. Dinner, which will be a full meal catered by a Mount Joy-based barbecue business, will begin at 5:30 p.m. Ohio native Mark Ledford will be the keynote speaker for the evening. One of Ledford’s claims to fame was harvesting a 26-point buck in 2013 that gross scored 222 inches nontypical and net scored 216 inches nontypical. He harvested a double drop tine buck in 2014 and a 150-inch 15-pointer in 2016. Ledford, who has written articles for Bowhunter and Big Buck magazines, will share his hunting stories from

and laughter. Ledford will also bring along his hunting mounts for folks to see. New Path Commnunity Church pastors Jay and Jean Frey connected with Ledford through last year’s sportsmen dinner speaker. “Our heart is just to bring the community together for love of the outdoors,” explained Jay. “If you love the outdoors and hunting and fishing, this is one (event) you don’t want to miss.” The Freys received a tremendous amount of feedback after last year’s inaugural event and are excited to offer the event to the public once again. “Our vision is to double attendance,” shared Jay. Jean, who is an avid hunter like Jay, said that she would like to see more women and youths attend this year’s event. “It’s really for everybody,” Jean remarked. All Hunt and Gather Sportsmen Dinner attendees will be entered to win a variety of hunting-, fishing-, and outdoors-themed giveaways. Jay noted that more than $9,000 worth of giveaways will be distributed at the event, many of which have been donated by local businesses. Several trips will be available to win, including an archery antelope hunt in Montana, a pheasant hunt for four in Reading, two hog hunts in Texas, and a six-person striper fishing trip to Rock Hall, Md. Additional prizes will include crossbows, firearms, hunting gear, and gift cards to area businesses. To order tickets to the Hunt and Gather Sportsmen Dinner, interested individuals may visit www.mynew path.org or call 717-742-0639. The deadline to order tickets is Monday, Sept. 10. Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc. (EPC) and the Hempfield recCenter will partner for the third year to host a Community Wellness Fair open to the public free of charge. The event will be held from 2 to 5 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Hempfield recCenter, 950 Church St., Landisville. “We have a number of resources and opportunities from the community represented,” said EPC publisher Jocelyn Engle. Almost 50 vendors from throughout Lancaster County are slated to attend the event, and Hempfield recCenter will give tours throughout the afternoon. Susquehanna Valley EMS will perform blood pressure screenings, INGROUP will provide body composition scans, and UPMC Pinnacle will have bone density scans and skin screenings. Attendees will also have the opportunity try a standup paddleboard, learn how to use a fire extinguisher, try on goggles that simulate the experience of being impaired by alcohol, and meet East Hempfield Township Police Department’s K-9 Tundra. For attendees wishing to relieve some stress, Keystone Pet Enhanced Therapy Services (KPETS) will have a therapy dog available, and The Hetrick Center will offer massages. Lancaster County Solid Waste Management Authority will be available to clear up any confusion about the recent changes to recycling practices. Interested individuals may also receive training on the use and administration of
naloxone from Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA). One free kit per household will be available while supplies last. The community can learn about volunteer opportunities by talking to representatives from United Way and GAiN USA. Children will have the opportunity to make license plates for their bikes courtesy of The Common Wheel. Additionally, individuals of voting age may prepare for the upcoming elections by updating their voter registration records or picking up applications for absentee ballots at the fair. “We encourage the community to take advantage of this chance to learn about a variety of organizations in one location,” said EPC marketing assistant Michele Emenheiser. An updated list of the Community Wellness Fair participants is available at www.townlively.com/community -wellness-fair. Readers may check the website for more information, or they may email livewell@engleonline.com or call Emenheiser at 717-492-2527. Children not only had the chance to help plant and tend to the garden but also to prepare and enjoy fresh snacks. Whenever a bumper crop occurred, the students got to take fresh food home - like on the day they gathered 26 pounds of cucumbers. Time was also spent playing games and creating garden-related crafts. Hamilton Elementary in the School District of Lancaster and Brecht Elementary in Manheim Township School District offered similar summer garden clubs. The Edible Classroom was also invited to provide garden education at Manor Township’s Playground in the Park program, where volunteers created a 20-by-50-foot garden plot for children to help tend and harvest vegetables. In addition to investing in a host of summer activities, The Edible Classroom is preparing for The Watermelon Blaster 5K and Fun Run, its inaugural fundraiser, on Saturday, Sept. 22, at Manor Middle School, 2950 Charlestown Road, Lancaster. Live music, fresh vegetable samples, and a watermelon seed spitting contest will all be part of the fun. For details on the event and to register, readers may visit www.the edibleclassroom.org/watermelon-blaster. A portion of every Watermelon Blaster registration fee will go into a School Garden Grant fund. Grants will be awarded to three schools to use The Edible Classroom’s programming to establish or sustain a school garden in the 2018-19 academic year. To apply for the School Garden Grant program, interested school representatives may email grace@theedibleclassroom.org. To keep up with future happenings and events, interested individuals may search for “The Edible Classroom” on Facebook or visit www.theedibleclassroom.org.

heard about each other’s initiatives and connected. In an effort to teach more students about growing their own food, the pair teamed up to establish The Edible Classroom and partner with schools in the Lancaster area to create and sustain learning gardens and customized programs. “Everything in the garden aligns with K-6 curriculum,” Julian noted. “You can learn about something on paper, but to plant and pick and taste it yourself really makes it real.” Since March, The Edible Classroom has helped nine schools to develop and sustain learning gardens. Some schools, like Park Elementary, offer full summer garden programs, while others offer a month during the school year, an after-school club, or just a few days here and there. Julian and Horst modify programs to meet whatever needs a particular class or school may have. Approximately 50 children attended the 10-week Summer in the Garden program at Park Elementary, which met outside the school on Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays from 9:30 a.m. to noon. Columbia Borough has helped to fund the program. In April, students in technology classes at Columbia High School built the raised beds for the garden and helped the elementary students to fill the space with leaf compost and soil. One local business provided discounted lumber for the project, and others donated leaf compost and topsoil. Several organizations donated seeds, and the fourth-grade classes at Park set to work planting lettuce, radishes, and other seasonally appropriate crops before the school year ended. Once the summer program began, the children who took part in the program helped to plant and tend to additional vegetables.

Eight gardens in the borough of Marietta - including five within one block - will be featured on the seventh annual Marietta Garden Tour on Sunday, Sept. 9. The selfguided tour will run from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., rain or shine, offering tourgoers inspiration for the end of summer and autumn season. Proceeds from the tour will benefit the ongoing restoration of the Marietta Community House, 264 W. Market St., Marietta. Tour chairperson and Marietta Community House board member Lauralee Baker described it as a classic walking garden tour with everything from tiny to larger gardens and both sunny and shaded spaces. At the property of Audrey and Jeremy Pombo, guests will find themselves in a shaded refuge of relaxation dotted with mature evergreens and trees. “We like to say it’s a little oasis back here, because you don’t really expect it,” Audrey said. The backyard garden features several tiers that the Pombos appreciate particularly when entertaining. Wisteria stretches from the property edge to the side porch where rocking chairs rest. A pathway of pavers and brick leads to a bathing pool in the yard’s third and final level. Carol and Keith Shadle will welcome guests into their beautiful shade garden.
BANKRUPTCY

By Chelsea Peifer
Much of the shade is thanks to an enormous dawn redwood tree which stands in the center of the backyard and was planted by Keith 20 years ago. A screened-in porch and slate patio lead to a brick walkway surrounded by hydrangeas, hostas, Jack-inthe-pulpit, ferns, white coralberry, bear paw succulents, and many other plants. “I have no experience with gardening; I just try what I like and see if it works,” shared Carol. Whimsical touches abound, from a red fire hydrant the couple knew had to make a way into their garden to an antique Marietta weathervane and lots of other small, well-thought-out touches. Flowering plants enhance the landscape as well, and the Shadles’ beagle, Gabby, may or may not be spotted meandering throughout the garden. The tour will also feature gardens at the homes of Carrie Muller and Bill Dalzell, Ronn Short and John Enterline, Aura and Sean Heisey, Melissa and Jim McIntyre, and Jackie and Randy Randazzo, as well as the Ascot House Bed and Breakfast, owned by Venetia Holland and presented by Bonnie Whalen. Admission to seminars at the Community House is also included with the purchase of tour tickets. John Enterline will present “Planning Your Garden” at noon and 2 p.m., and Tim Elkner will teach on “Fall Gardening” at 1 and 3 p.m. Enterline is a graduate of the Longwood Gardens Professional Gardener Program and has designed gardens
