HYMN SING

The Lancaster Chapter of the American Guild of Organists will meet at Trinity Lutheran Church, 47 W. Main St., Mount Joy, for a hymn sing on Sunday, Sept. 15, at 6:30 p.m., and the congregation and community are invited to attend. Members from the Lancaster Chapter of the AGO will choose favorite hymns and volunteer to play. According to Joy Ide, the Trinity Lutheran organist, Trinity has a threemanual (keyboard) Mohler/Walker organ of about 50 ranks of pipe and digital voices with lots of memory. Near the conclusion of the hymn sing, there should also be time for requests from the congregation. MILITARY RECOGNITION

Elizabethtown Area High School invites community members to the district’s first Military Appreciation Night on Friday, Oct. 18, in partnership with the Army National Guard. Current members of the military and veterans will receive free admission to the 7 p.m. football game when the Bears take on Lampeter-Strasburg. Those on active duty or who have served in the military will be recognized for their service. In addition, members of the Elizabethtown Boys Club football and cheerleading programs will join varsity football players and cheerleaders for a flag ceremony before kickoff. The Army National Guard will also have a mobile exhibit. HISTORY PRESENTATION

Bethel A.M.E. Church, 128 W. Fairview Ave., Marietta, will host a special presentation, “A Historic Perspective of the Underground Railroad From Accomac to Mount Joy” by historian Daniel Ness, as part of the church’s celebration of its 200 years in the Marietta community. The presentation, which will be sponsored by the Bethel A.M.E. trustees, will take place on Sunday, Sept. 22, at 3 p.m. at the church. All are welcome to attend.

This year, the Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair is moving to a new location. The 12th annual event is set to take place from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 7, in Landis Hall at The Junction Center, 1875 Junction Road, Manheim. People may visit with representatives of 30 nonprofits that are providing life-changing benefits to people in both local and global contexts. Individuals will have the option of purchasing charitable gift donations to honor loved ones, and each of those gifts will include a greeting card and an explanatory insert about how

the donation will sustain and provide for others. Founder Jenn Knepper said that the fair also offers plenty of options for individuals who would rather purchase something tangible to gift those on their holiday shopping list with as well. In addition to the 30 nonprofits, approximately 12 marketplace vendors will sell fair trade items. “ We try to emphasize that there’s something for everybody,” explained Knepper. “And if you are going to buy tangible things, make it something that is ethically sourced. People want to make those choices, and the fair brings a lot of options into one place.” See GTGH pg 2

The Gifts That Give Hope (GTGH) Lancaster Alternative Gift Fair, founded by Jenn Knepper (third from right), will be held on Dec. 7 at The Junction Center in Manheim. Representing a sampling of the organizations that will take part in this year’s event are (from left) Feleen Nancarvis of Lancaster Meals on Wheels, Beth Weaver of AIM to Empower, Mustafa Nuur of Bridge, and Deb Becker and Carla Horn of Connection Ubuntu.

On Saturday, Sept. 28, the Historic Preservation Trust (HPT) of Lancaster County will host the Columbia Architectural Tour, showcasing the beauty of

buildings dating from the 1700s to the 1930s. “Each of the 25 sites is significant, and that’s why we picked it to be part of the tour,” explained Matt Barley, HPT board member and tour committee chair. See Architectural Tour pg 4

FREEDOM FROM VARICOSE VEINS

The fair serves as a strong community-building event as the nonprofits that participate are able to share their stories and missions with shoppers, building both relationships and awareness. One of the new participants in this year’s fair will be Bridge, an award-winning cultural exchange startup established by Somalian refugee Mustafa Nuur. “We are a social enterprise company, and we use cultural events to connect people in the community with refugees,” explained Nuur. Bridge, which allows people to purchase in-home dining experiences with local refugee families, offers refugees an

opportunity to use their existing skills to make a supplemental income and provides Americans with cross-cultural experiences in their own hometown. Exclusive gift certificates will be available for GTGH attendees to purchase. Another new GTGH participant for 2019 will be AIM to Empower, a nonprofit organization founded by Beth Weaver in 2017 with the intent of creating connection and opportunity through the practice of yoga. “I’ve seen the positive impact (yoga) can have on people, so we want to take yoga to underserved populations,” Weaver said. AIM to Empower has implemented yoga programs in places including Lancaster County Prison, Lancaster County Youth Intervention Center,

Refugee Center and Community School at Reynolds, and Lourdeshouse Maternity Home. At GTGH, plenty of food will be available to purchase from local vendors such as Upohar, Reunion Food Truck, Grape Leaf Cafe, and The Lancaster Stroopies Company, so Knepper encourages attendees to come hungry. A new food tour will allow people to purchase tickets and receive a stamp card that will direct them to the eight booths at the fair participating in the tour. A volunteer or business owner at each stand will provide food education or information about the business, as well as samples of small dishes such as samosas and Liberian rice bread. Children can participate in a scavenger hunt centered on the Declaration of Human Rights in honor of Human Rights Day, cele-

brated on Dec. 10. Participants who complete the hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. Since it began in 2008, the fair has become a staple for many Lancaster-area residents as they shop for the holidays. Knepper, who resides in Lancaster and works as a nurse in Hershey, read a newspaper article about an alternative gift fair happening in Harrisburg and thought it would be great to bring one to Lancaster. “I just loved what they were doing, because I’ve always been kind of a minimalist, and giving gifts that would also serve a deeper purpose really resonated with me,” Knepper said. On Saturday, Sept. 21, the Marietta Community House will host “An Evening in the Studio,” which will showcase both of its historic buildings at 264 W. Market St., Marietta. This is an extra special year for the annual dinner and benefit auction, as the Marietta Community House is celebrating its 100th anniversary. “The auction is always a really fun night, and we’d love to have anyone and everyone show up,” said Katherine Leaman, Marietta Community House president. “We have regained the building that saw the birth of the Susquehanna Stage Company and are excited to showcase both the studio and the house during the auction,” stated Leaman. Susquehanna Stage Company relocated to its new space at 133 W. Market St., Marietta, earlier in 2019. Leaman said that future possibilities for the space formerly occupied by the community theater group, which is now being called the studio, are currently being explored and discussed by board members. Historically, the space functioned as a gymnasium. “We are looking for something that will benefit

the community as a whole and are open to all possibilities,” remarked Leaman. Cocktails and hors d’oeuvres will be served in the studio beginning at 5:30 p.m. Silent auction items will be available for attendees to bid on, and live jazz music will be performed by the Tom Pontz Trio. At 6:30 p.m., dinner and dessert will be served in the house. Afterward, auctioneer Karl Boltz will officiate the live auction party. Highlighted items will include two tickets to a performance of “Hamilton” in Philadelphia; a Mediterranean dinner for six; a stay at a condominium in Pompano Beach, Fla.; and a golf outing for four at the Harrisburg Country Club. Original artwork from local artists including David Haneman and Suzanne Satterfield will also be up for bids. Proceeds from the dinner and auction will benefit the maintenance and ongoing restoration of the Marietta Community House. Events hosted earlier this year by the Marietta Community House included a thank-you cocktail party for the Marietta volunteer organizations in April and a free children’s festival in June, as well

The HPT was established in the 1960s in response to the urban renewal happening in Lancaster, and Barley said that since then a walking tour of a borough or town in Lancaster County has been offered to the public approximately every two years. The mission of HPT, then and now, is to encourage and facilitate historic preservation throughout the county. “At the Trust, we educate, we collaborate, and we celebrate, and the tour hits all three of those,” explained Barley. “You’ve got to continually be educating because it’s so easily forgotten.” “The tour is about Lancaster County as a whole,” said Barley, noting that past tours have highlighted preservation in areas such as Marietta, Ephrata, Strasburg, and Bowmansville. “Having Columbia for this year’s tour seems to parallel the exciting things that are happening there.” Columbia is known to some as the jewel of the Susquehanna and still others as the Brooklyn of Lancaster, but organizers have promoted the Columbia Architectural Tour as a chance for people to see why some are calling Columbia “the Paris of Pennsylvania.” Barley, who resides in Columbia, admits that the phrase began somewhat in jest, but the more he considered it, the more it stuck. “The way that Columbia is laid out makes it very walkable, and it has a lot of green spaces and parks,” said Barley.

Barley said that the Columbia-Wrightsville bridge, which is one of the stops on the tour, is perhaps the most architecturally interesting structure in the county. Construction on the bridge began in 1929 and was completed in 1930. The oldest building on the tour is Wright’s Ferry Mansion, built in 1738 and home to the famous Susanna Wright. Educated in England, Susanna helped to pioneer the oncethriving silk industry in Columbia and corresponded with intellectuals like Benjamin Franklin throughout her lifetime. The guided exterior walking tours will be led by architectural designers and are set to begin at 10 a.m. and depart every halfhour through 3 p.m. on Sept. 28. Participants must check in for the tour at the Columbia Market House, 15 S. Third St., Columbia, to receive wristbands and a tour booklet. Check-in will begin at 9:30 a.m. Although 25 properties are included in the tour, not all of those will be part of the guided

portion of the tour. Tourgoers will each receive a 75-page booklet including historical background and anecdotes for each of the sites, and they may explore the other properties on their own during tour hours. A trolley will be running on a loop throughout town as another mode of transportation for participants to reach all of the sites. To purchase tickets for the Columbia Architectural Tour in advance, people may visit https://hptrust.org. Tickets may also be available on the day of the

tour while supplies last. Admission to the Turkey Hill Experience, Wright’s Ferry Mansion, and the National Watch and Clock Museum is included with each tour ticket. Separate ticket prices have been set for HPT members and for nonmembers, as well as for children. The tour is family-friendly, and a treasure hunt for children will be offered. Individuals with questions may email manager@hptrust.org or call 717-291-5861. A complete list of properties on the tour is available at https://hptrust.org.

The Elizabethtown Historical Society, 57 S. Poplar St., has announced a special event on Tuesday, Sept. 17, at 7 p.m. Daryl Hilsher from Longenecker’s Hatchery will share with historical society members and guests the history of the hatchery. Clayton M. Longenecker began Longenecker’s Hatchery in 1918 from a location on Bainbridge Street. In 1920, he purchased property on South Market Street

at Ridge Road and erected a modern hatchery building on it. Longenecker specialized in Baron Single Comb White Leghorns. In the 1920s, chicks were hatched only in the spring and early summer and shipped to customers in many eastern states. Hilsher will explain the growth of the industry and how hatcheries have evolved over the decades. The hatchery is located today at 1110 S. Market St., Elizabethtown.

Featuring showgirls and cowboys, the show is a breezy and stylish biography of the Oklahoma-born humorist, journalist, and friend of presidents. “Will Rogers Follies” depicts the rags-to-riches story of Will Rogers, who became a multimedia sensation who touched hearts and minds through a weekly radio talk show, newspapers, and movies. Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce will participate in ribbon-cutting celebrations for two new businesses - Subterranean Spa and The Tatted Toy Guys - on Friday, Sept. 13. Subterranean Spa, an Elizabethtown-based holistic spa focused on relaxation and wellbeing, will celebrate its grand opening at 40 S. Market St., lower level, Elizabethtown, with a ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce on Sept. 13 at 5:30 p.m. An open house, which will be held from 1 to 8 p.m., will feature a special giveaway, a buy-one-get-one-free Serene Package, and more. Anyone who books a 60-minute massage during the grand opening will automatically be upgraded to a 90-minute massage. Manager Monica Lyons has worked in the beauty and medi-

cal industry for almost 20 years. She has been a licensed massage therapist for the last five years. Lyons strives to use the most pure, natural, organic ingredients that she has access to, and she creates as many of her products as possible. Ingredients include organic coconut oil used in body scrubs, organic hemp seed oil used in the formula for massage oil, and many other natural organic products. The spa offers therapeutic massage, facials, body scrubs, reiki, reflexology, and other services that will be offered on a limited basis. The first such service to be announced will be the pumpkin spice facial, scrub, and body wrap. The company is owned by Bridget Grant of InkCredible Outcomes. For more information about Subterranean Spa, readers may visit https://inkcredibleoutcomes.com

/subterranean-spa/ or call 717725-3297. Also celebrating a grand opening on Sept. 13 will be The Tatted Toy Guys at 50 S. Market St., Elizabethtown. A ribbon-cutting ceremony performed by the Elizabethtown Area Chamber of Commerce will be held at 6:30 p.m. The doors will open at 4 p.m., and the open house event will feature music from Occasions Disc Jockey, hors d’oeuvres served by Food for Thought Catering, Disney pin trading, and more. The Tatted Toy Guys is an Elizabethtown-based vintage to modern collectible toy store featuring new and used toys from the 1970s, ’80s, and ’90s to today. The store offers toy lines such as He-man, She-ra, Thundercats, Care Bears, Rainbow Brite, Pound Puppies, My Pet Monster, My Buddy, Ghost-

busters, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Fisher-Price, and Garfield, as well as lines like today’s Imaginext, Littlest Pet Shop, and more. The store will also have a wish list for items collectors are looking for that are not yet available in the store. The company is owned by Clint and Tony Gibble, owners of Tony Gibble Photography for the past 11 years, who have been collecting toys for some time. They often wished there was a store that they could go to and actually see toys before purchasing them for their own collections. The Tatted Toy Guys nickname was given to them while on their toy hunting journeys. For more information about The Tatted Toy Guys, readers may visit the Facebook page or text 717-615-7165.

ET Lady Booters Top Comets, Falcons by Eric Pyles

With summer fading farther into the rearview mirror, residents of Elizabethtown are free to turn their attention to their favorite high school sports team. Those supporting the Lady Bear soccer team have been rewarded with a fast start that contains nearly as many wins as last year’s 3-13-2 campaign. Victories over Penn Manor and Cedar Crest more than canceled out the 2-1 season opening loss at Dallastown. Elizabethtown shook off the August 30th loss by drilling Penn Manor in the Lady Bears’ home opener on September 3rd which left head coach Brian Ressler saying, “It was great ....so happy to do that for a great crowd.” Kaitlyn Snyder picked up her first shutout of the young season with a four save effort while Jena Witters, Aivery Shuck and Kaelynn Sheetz took care of the offense. Witters put E-town on the

board converting a Sheetz pass in the 24th minute for the lone goal of the opening half. The Lady Comets were double Shuck-ed in the 48th minute when Olivia Shuck found her sister Aivery to push the lead to 2-0 while Sheetz finished up the scoring in the 74th minute with help from Aivery Shuck. Two days later the Lady Bears took a trip to Lebanon where a three-goal first half was enough to secure a 3-1 win over Cedar Crest. Aivery Shuck got the action going early with an unassisted score in the sixth minute. Olivia Anson was up next with Sheetz providing the setup off a corner kick in the 10th minute while Olivia Shuck did the dishing on Elizabethtown’s final goal, a Sheetz’s tally one minute later. Snyder was unable to record her second straight shutout but her seven saves were enough to secure the win.

VOLLEYBALL The soccer pitch is not the only place Elizabethtown fans are enjoying a hot start. The Lady Bear volleyball team ripped off back-to-back wins over Warwick and Solanco to improve to 2-1, adding to their second-place finish at Trinity’s Labor Day Launch Tournament. Elizabethtown’s shot at Labor Day Launch gold on August 31st came to an end opposite the same team that was responsible for their season opening loss one day prior, Palmyra. Fortunately, the Lady Bears were able to bounce back, blowing by Warwick 25-11, 25-9 and 25-11 for the 3-0 sweep. Hayden Calaman (30 assists) and McKenna Dare (10 kills) led the way on offensive while Haylee Calaman (six digs) and Kallee Locker (three blocks) paced the defense. Ashley NyeSmith chipped in with seven aces.

E-town kept their train rolling on September 5th with another 3-0 win, this one over Solanco 25-10, 25-9 and 25-12. Sydney Stewart joined Hayden Calaman and Dare to lead the way with the trio combining for 29 assists, 10 kills, eight digs, four aces and one block. GOLF The golf team got an early jump on the 2019 season with an August 20th start date allowing the Bears to put three matches in the books before most other fall teams had one. With the early start E-town has ripped through four of their six regular season matches with an 11-9 record to show for their efforts. The Bears most recent travels sent them to Media Heights for Conestoga Valley’s turn at hosting the Section Two showdown. Elizabethtown managed to top the host Buckskins as well as Solanco with their 395 team score but fell to

Warwick, Ephrata and Garden Spot to finish the day 2-3. Alex Williams was the top finisher for E-town, posting a round of 82 which tied Ephrata’s Ethan Minnich for the second lowest tally of the day. Westin Kolaric finished in a tie for 13th with his round of 95 while Tyler Souders (104) and Will Schaffer (111) rounded out Elizabethtown’s scorers. FIELD HOCKEY The 2019 season started a bit slow for the field hockey team with the Lady Bears sitting at 1-4 after one week of action. Elizabethtown’s lone victory came over Milton Hershey in the Lady Spartans September 7th four-team tournament. Etown used two Mackenzie Hammaker overtime goals and nine Alaina Telenko saves to secure the win. Hammaker scored the first of her two goals in the 1v1 OT format as a sub on a penalty stroke that was awarded after the Milton See E-town pg 14

Chargers Battle Lititz Christian in Agape Cup Split results gave the MC Chargers a taste of both winning and losing in the two showdowns of their inaugural week of competition. Friday night signified the 10th annual Agape Cup in which the Chargers hosted the Lititz Christian Eagles under the lights in front of a packed crowd, falling 3-1, allowing Lititz to remain in possession of the trophy for another year. The cup game was initiated a

decade ago as a reminder that the ultimate purpose of their athletic endeavors is that their sportsmanlike conduct will bring honor and glory to their Savior, Jesus Christ-the same purpose the teams hold today. Before and after the competition, the players meet to encourage and pray together, calling attention to the meaning of the term “agape”, a Greek work for “love”, specifically referring to a sacrificial love that is an action, best demonstrated in the way Jesus Christ laid down His own life for His

creation. The emphasis of the game doesn’t diminish the intensity on the field, and both Lititz and Mount Calvary were hungry for the win. The Eagles struck first, capitalizing on a first half penalty kick to give them the 1-0 edge heading into the second half. MC increased their pressure in the latter 40, but a few narrowly missed connections denied them the equalizer, and Lititz put in a second goal after only seven minutes had transpired.

Making the most of each opportunity, freshman Braden Esbenshade returned a deflected shot off the Lititz keeper, converting the second chance, and put the Chargers on the scoreboard with 15 minutes remaining. Though their efforts were evident, the closing minutes only held a third tally for the Eagles, leaving the Chargers on the wrong end of the 3-1 final. The previous weekend, the MC boys opened their season with a home game against York Country Day and thrilled the home crowd with a rapid

trio of goals netted within a fiveminute span, earning a 3-0 advantage before the half, and ultimately claimed the contest, 4-1. “The team really showed how to create scoring chances throughout the game-especially in the first 20 minutes,” praised head coach Marc Myers. Damian Rutt netted back-to-back goals to ignite the club, propelling the ball past the goal line twice in as many minutes. Harrison Crick followed suit a mere three minutes later to give the Chargers a comfortable cushion headed into the second half. While York managed to slip in a goal of their own in the second 40, MC retaliated on a corner kick opportunity taken by freshman Brett Taylor. Taylor sailed the corner ball into the goal box finding Dane Kelley who headed the ball into the netting. GIRLS’ SOCCER The pendulum swung a wide arc in the outcomes of the first three contests of the Lady Chargers 2019 season. The soccer squad experienced a shutout loss, a blowout victory, and a final-minute game winner to give them an early record of 2-1. Wrapping up their opening week with a Saturday contest hosting Brandywine Heights, the Chargers pulled out a 3-2 triumph with the golden goal coming 44 seconds before time expired. Junior Julia Martin notched all three Charger goals, securing the first after 39 minutes on a breakaway that leveled the scoreboard at one apiece going into the half. “We weren’t expecting to get an injury early in the game or go down a goal, but we played through those situations with some key players stepping up to meet the challenges of the game,” explained head coach Kim Schmitkons. Four minutes into the second, it was deja vu with Martin again emerging from the traffic to net goal number two, and boost the Chargers to their first lead of the contest. With 24 minutes left to play, Brandywine got a break with a higharching shot from well outside the 18 that floated out of reach for the Charger keeper and settled into the goal to knot the game at two. An intense Brandywine offense

was kept at bay by a Chargers tireless defensive unit, anchored by keeper Marlie Niedwick, who gathered an incredible 18 saves in the triumph. “Marlie needed to have a big second half, and she owned her box with tremendous confidence, coming out for tackles and getting hands on shots,” praised Schmitkons. In regards to the rest of the defensive force, commanded by sophomore duo Elena Hatfield and Ruth Hynum, it was obvious they were playing with cohesion and executing a plan. “We work with our back line on positioning and supporting each other. They transferred that into the game and held firm, with especially great performances from Elena and Ruth stepping to balls and sweeping play out wide,” continued Schmitkons. Playing the majority of the contest without the luxury of substitutes, the MC club dug deep to transfer the pressure to the Brandywine defensive end, and with under a minute to play earned a free kick deep in the left corner. Naomi Ewing sailed a cross into the goal box, finding Martin who converted her third, and more importantly, the golden goal with 44 seconds remaining. The previous evening, on a trip to New Covenant Christian, the squad picked up their first CCAC victory, topping the Flames 8-1. Martin knocked in half of the Charger count, netting four, accompanied by goals from Lilly Knudsen, Olivia Yordy, Naomi Ewing, and Ruth Hynum. “We set out to show that we are going to be a tough team to beat. We wanted to set a tone for our season,” noted Schmitkons. “It was great to see goals and attack from many different players.” Coming on the heels of their season opener, a 5-0 loss to Susquenita High School, the win proved to be a good confidence boost for the team as well as an important conference success. The weekend break will be shortlived for the lineup hoping to recoup from both fatigue and injuries as they See Chargers pg 14

plunge into a three-game week, facing High Point Baptist, Harrisburg Academy, and Lancaster County Christian. VOLLEYBALL MC girls’ volleyball rocketed off to a near-perfect season start, scooping up three consecutive victories. West Shore was the third conquest, with the Chargers getting the job done in rapid fashion, sweeping 3-0 last Friday (25-13, 25-14, 25-16). Twenty-four hours earlier the squad picked up a win over Linville Hill, in a truly back-and-forth battle that extended to a determining fifth set, (25-19, 23-25, 25-21, 22-25, 15-12). Kami Mummau brought the power to the Charger offense, registering 13 kills and firing 9 aces. Kara Locker’s 14 assists and four digs laid the groundwork for that offensive success, and Brie Lehman was a defensive force with four blocks. Previously, the club served up some heat in their season opener at home, taking down the Columbia Crimson Tide in three straight games (25-6, 2519, 25-17). Service was the name of the game, with MC establishing their dominance from the get-go and racking up a team

total of 24 aces, from the hands of seven different servers. “We’ve been working with the team on using a variety of serves, as well as focusing on certain zones on the court,” explained head coach Kate Ferrari. Columbia showed some fight in the second game, dishing a few aces of their own to jump out 3-0, their first lead of the contest. After a back-and-forth battle into the upper teens, Locker slammed a trio of unreturnable serves at the Tide defense to take the lead for the final time 18-17 before running away with the contest. Locker led the ace count with eight, followed closely by Grace Hilsher with five. “We have several girls with strong serves that are tough to receive and turn over into a good play,” elaborated Ferrari. “If you have tough servers, it really throws off the other teams’ offense.” Mummau pumped adrenaline through the squad in a well-rounded effort including four kills, 10 digs, and two aces. GOLF The MC golf club is still in the hunt for their first team win, but their work ethic, team enthusiasm, and tenacity speaks of success in ways that can’t always be measured. An early season match at Highlands

of Donegal might have displayed a fourth-place score of 467 by the MC Chargers, falling behind High Point Baptist (356), Dayspring Christian (364), and Lancaster County Christian (366), but teamwork and optimism ruled the day as the team anticipates a season of fun and growth. “We have a young team this year, with many freshmen,” pointed out head coach Matt Owlett. Two of those freshmen athletes, Luke Tuner and Josh Smullen, helped lead the team, breaking into the top four scores. Senior Danny Smullen led the team with the low score of the day, 94. “It was great to see Luke and Josh contribute as freshmen. I’m excited about the future,” encouraged Owlett. Another 18 holes played at Fox Chase Golf Course yielded similar results with MCCS falling behind High Point (361), Dayspring (368), and LCCS (382), but new faces and team unity was on display. D. Smullen led the Chargers with a 97, and Isaiah Shaeffer debuted with a 118, second lowest of the day for the MC club. “Isaiah Shaeffer was a nice surprise. He is new to golf and this was his first match. To see him play well was exciting,” praised Owlett. “Danny continues to set the pace for the team.”

Faith Friendship Ministries from pg 1 “We are probably Lancaster’s best-kept housing secret,” Didden asserted. “On one hand, I’m glad, because that means we’re good neighbors (and not drawing a lot of negative attention). This is a spiritual community that provides housing. Our family members just happen to be low-income and have a mental health diagnosis.” Faith Friendship Villa fits in the continuum between group home and nursing home. All of the family members - as residents are called - have limited incomes, and many have some kind of mental health challenge. Both men and women live at the villa, and their ages range between 32 and 90, with the average age in the mid-50s. “These are people who have the desire to have a fulfilled life,” Didden said. Care directors at the villa serve as case managers, working to get newcomers qualified to receive the government assistance for which

they fit the criteria. The goal is to get their lives stable as soon as possible, so Faith Friendship Villa accepts individuals without the ability to pay. For qualified individuals, the home is reimbursed only $37 per day per person. “Small personal care homes across the state are closing, but we’re able to survive because we’re nonprofit,” Didden commented. “If we didn’t have the ministry piece of this, we wouldn’t continue to be sustained.” Didden noted that Lancaster County has 5,500 personal care beds, but only 300 are reserved for low-income people. In July, the villa took 53 calls inquiring about availability, and halfway through August, the call volume had already risen to 40. “The need is great,” Didden observed. “We’re getting calls from retirees who move here and have siblings or children with mental illness. When they can no

longer be caregivers, what can they do with (their loved ones)? We may need to be the premier agency for this issue.” Didden expressed a hope that by creating a signature event, more people will learn about Faith Friendship Villa and support its ministry through finances or volunteerism. There are many volunteer opportunities at the villa, and training is provided. Among other tasks, volunteers may help to serve dinner, paint fingernails, and mend clothing or sew on buttons. The gala will open at 5:30 p.m. so guests may tour the barn. Dinner will begin at 6 p.m., and diners will be treated to a buffet that will include artisan cheeses, candied bacon skewers, spanakopita triangles, wedge salad, Kentucky bourbon-glazed flank steak, roasted turkey breast, garlic smashed potatoes, creamy macaroni and cheese with bacon, roasted root vegetables, and

freshly baked rolls and butter. The program will start at 7 p.m. Dave Abel, who restored the Star Barn, will give the keynote address, “Restoring Hope.” Live musical entertainment will be provided, videos of family members’ and staff members’ stories will be presented, and a silent auction will be held. The schedule has been timed to coordinate with the sunset, Didden said. “We want this to be an event people can’t forget,” Didden explained. “Low-income and mentally ill people tend to be forgotten.” A cost has been set to attend the event, and tickets must be purchased by Monday, Sept. 30. Readers may visit www.faithfriendship.org or call 717-2855596, ext. 412, to buy tickets or learn more. Didden also welcomes calls from anyone who would like to donate items for the silent auction.

PSECU Supports Hunger Action Month September is Hunger Action Month, a nationwide initiative to raise awareness and encourage action to help end hunger. During the month, the Central Pennsylvania Food Bank (CPFB) is partnering with its Hunger Action Month presenting sponsor, PSECU, to host events, awards, and a virtual food drive initiative to highlight the issue of hunger in the area and to spur community action. Through the collaboration, now in its third consecutive year, PSECU will

contribute up to $20,000 to the cause and encourage its members living in CPFB’s 27-county region to donate. In conjunction with Hunger Action Month, the CPFB will host its annual Hunger Heroes Awards at the annual Hunger Action Day breakfasts in the food bank’s healthy food hubs in Harrisburg on Thursday, Sept. 12, and Williamsport on Tuesday, Sept. 17. Members of the community are invited to register to attend the free events at www.central

pafoodbank.org/ham. To help bring additional awareness to the issue of hunger, the CPFB has asked community leaders to be “celebrity volunteers” and help pack boxes, visit food distribution sites, and raise awareness throughout the month of September. These celebrity volunteers include public officials, corporate executives, nonprofit leaders, media personalities, and others. During Hunger Action Month, PSECU will match donations made through the CPFB’s virtual

food drive up to a total of $15,000. This online initiative allows businesses and groups to raise funds to support the food bank’s work. On the platform, supporters can challenge friends and family with a virtual food drive on an interactive website that simulates how monetary donations efficiently purchase food for families, veterans, and seniors. Readers may learn more or make a donation at www.centralpafoodbank.org/psecu. In addition to virtual food

drive donation matching in September, PSECU will provide the CPFB with a $5,000 sponsorship, bringing its combined contribution to a potential $20,000. According to CPFB, each dollar donated to the food bank equates to six meals, so PSECU’s donation could provide up to 120,000 meals for those in need. Additionally, the credit union will continue promoting ways families can use effective budgeting to make healthy food choices, highlighting hunger issues on

college campuses, and volunteering at the food bank. CPFB is one of 200 food bank members of Feeding America, which serves every county in the United States and provides more than three billion meals each year to Americans in need. To learn more about hunger and Hunger Action Month events, activities, and ways to get involved, readers may visit www.centralpafoodbank.org/ham.
