Old-Fashioned Field Days Set For Sept. 15 And 16 By Chelsea Peifer

Each year the dedicated residents who organize Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days decide on a different agricultural process or antiquity to feature at the two-day event, and this year’s theme was chosen at the suggestion of numerous individuals. Bells, whistles, and poultry items - new and old, of all shapes and sizes - will be on display for folks to view and learn a bit of history. Organizer Darl Williams has amassed quite a collection of bells and whistles, including several worn by horses pulling the famous Conestoga wagons. In those days, bells announced that a team of horses was coming and

signaled to people and animals alike to get out of the way. “Anyone can bring stuff that day to display, and there’s already been a fair amount of people who said they’re bringing these items,” said organizer Ron Bernhard, adding that train whistles and steam whistles will also be among the selection. Poultryrelated items can encompass anything from old feeders to signs, memorabilia, and more. “You’d be surprised what shows up,” Bernhard commented. The 21st annual Susquehanna OldFashioned Field Days event will take place on Saturday and Sunday, Sept. 15 and 16, at Conoy Park, 2115 River Road, Bainbridge. Admission and parking will be free. Antique tractors, hit-and-miss engines, model engines, and other items will round out the machinery exhibits. See Old-Fashioned Field Days pg 3

The organizers of Susquehanna Old-Fashioned Field Days, including (from left) Darl Williams, Earl Fuhrman, Mitch Bernhard, Ron Bernhard, Tonya Bernhard, and Kevin Baker, invite the community to enjoy the free two-day festival celebrating agricultural history on Sept. 15 and 16 at Conoy Park in Bainbridge.

furnaces in the Marietta and Columbia region between 1843 and 1931. “I love seeing folks tour the furnace site and Vesta building and learn about our history,” commented Snow, noting that attendees often share with him that they appreciate the history element and the family-friendly nature of the event. “I love giving back to the community. Seeing so many people happy and having a great time (is) a Pig Iron Fest miracle.” Pig Iron Fest is sponsored by the Donegal Area Rotary Club and the Lancaster County Department of Parks and Recreation. Proceeds from the event will support the East Donegal/Conoy Area Christian Food Bank, the Marietta Pioneer Fire Company and the Marietta Fire Police, and the maintenance of the historic furnace site and Vesta building.

ed States federal government declared a national public health emergency in October 2017, with Pennsylvania declaring a statewide disaster emergency in January 2018. “Lancaster County is not alone in this crisis, but it displays a higher rate of drug-related overdose deaths than the nationwide average,” said Search, noting that more than 160 Lancastrians died from accidental overdose in 2017. “The opioid crisis is not a problem happening ‘somewhere else,’ nor is it limited to our nation’s cities or among certain socioeconomic populations,” Search emphasized. Lancaster County is not only well-known for things like its agriculture and natural beauty,

Search noted, but also for the way that its people come together to address the needs of the community. “Joining Forces is just the latest example - in this case bringing together dozens of organizations to develop and implement a comprehensive plan for opioid abuse prevention and help for those trapped in addiction,” said Search. LCJF strives to implement a continuum of care with an emphasis on both broad, community-based education and awareness and the promotion of healthy lifestyles, while also connecting people who are experiencing addiction to appropriate treatment and recovery support. Some of the organization’s efforts include producing and distributing more than 93,000 brochures about opioid addiction and how to get help throughout the

county and working with schools. LCJF currently offers evidence-based prevention programming in 13 school districts. In the first three months of 2018, Lancaster County’s rate of overdose deaths was down 20 percent from 2017, according to Search. “Early data from April through May suggests that rate of overdose deaths continues to head downward,” said Search. “While it is too soon to say if this is a definite trend, we can say that this coordinated response to our county’s opioid crisis exemplifies the concern and compassion we all share for the health and wellbeing of our fellow citizens.” Individuals who would like to learn more about hosting a presentation or series of presentations through LCJF may contact Sue Lackmann at 717-544-3284 or selackma@lghealth.org.

Series from pg 1 According to Rosemary Search, health promotion specialist with Penn Medicine Lancaster General Health, LCJF launched as a community collaborative in 2017 with a primary aim of supporting and coordinating countywide efforts to reduce the number of deaths from overdoses of heroin and other opioids. LCJF brings key stakeholders and community members together to strengthen existing initiatives across all sectors, identify and address gaps in services and resources, and implement strategies for prevention, intervention, and monitoring. “Opioid-related overdose deaths constitute a serious public health concern across the United States,” stated Search. We’ve put a lot of effort into dash plaques and trophies and giving the show cars a proper spotlight,” remarked Snow, who gives all credit to fellow organizer Gary Schatz, whom he calls the “car show hero.” Live musical entertainment will be provided by Justin Angelo and Tim Rinard. Northwest EMS from pg 1 Northwest Emergency Medical Services (EMS) is more than halfway to its goal of raising $30,000 to purchase bullet-resistant vests for crew members. The EMS agency intends to provide the vests due to the opioid crisis and an increase in active shooter threats. Northwest EMS covers the northern tier of Lancaster County from Conoy Township to Clay Township, including Elizabethtown and Manheim. As payments for ambulance services decrease, the EMS agency based in Elizabethtown decided to ask area residents to help protect its crews. The community responded, and to date the

agency has received $15,151 in checks, including at least 20 from donors who paid the full $500 cost of one vest, and $1,665 from the GoFundMe page, for a total of $16,816. Recently the EMS agency received help from the Northwest Regional Police, which patrols West Donegal and Mount Joy townships. The Northwest Regional Police Commission donated $1,000, and the Northwest Regional Police Association, representing the officers, donated $500. Contributions may be made at www.gofundme.com/invest -in-ems.

Individuals are invited to attend an information session for the Medicare Annual Enrollment Period to receive valuable information to assist persons in making a wellinformed decision about their health and drug coverage. Medicare Advantage Plans and Part D Prescription Drug Plans are allowed to change the amounts of their plan deductibles, co-pays, and total out-of-pocket expenses, as well as their drug formularies each year, which is why Medicare strongly recommends that beneficiaries compare their current plan against other plans available for 2019. The information sessions are for people already on Medicare and enrolled in a Medicare Advantage plan or Prescription Drug plan. Space is limited and registration is required. To register, readers may call Lancaster County Office of Aging at 717299-7979, 800-801-3070, or by email aging@co.lancaster.pa.us. Trip Helps Deepen Biblical Understanding By Ann Mead Ash

In June 1976, Theresa Newell made her first trip to Israel. “The first day I was there, we were taken to the Western Wall,” recalled Newell. “When I walked up to the wall to pray, God just met me there, and I said, ‘Father, I am here,’ and I heard, ‘… and you’ll be back.’” Newell, who is director of communications for CMJ USA, has now led more than 50 trips to Israel. When she returned to the United States after her first trip, she began learning Hebrew. “That was a big adventure,” she noted. Her ability to use the language will be employed again, when Newell leads a group to Israel from Sunday, Sept. 8, to Friday, Sept. 20, 2019. Using the Shoresh Study Tours program, the group will travel to the coast, desert, and mountains, stopping at places where biblical events are believed to have occurred to help the travelers dig deeper into the Scriptures. The tour will include both Old and New Testament sites and information about the history of modern Israel. The focus of the study during the trip is on Christ and a better understanding of His ministry. Newell’s second trip to Israel occurred in 1979, when she was asked to take a group of stu-

dents from a Christian school back to Israel. She stayed for a month teaching students, and when she returned, others began asking her to take them to Israel. “Every year I began taking people back,” said Newell, who added that in the 1980s, she realized that study programs for Israel visitors were sparse. “There was some formal (education), but for people going for just a few weeks, the content was lacking,” she noted. Around that same time, Newell was introduced to the international director of CMJ, which stands for Church’s Ministry Among Jewish People. The ministry was founded in 1809 in London. Newell was asked to open an American office in Fairfax, Va. She and other members of the ministry began asking the question “How do we get more biblical content into a travel program for laypeople?” “(We wanted) a program for people who wanted to deepen their relationship with Jesus and understand the relationship between Old and New Testament and understand Jesus in the Second Temple period,” explained Newell. “That’s how we came to develop the Shoresh program.” Newell explained that “Shoresh” is Hebrew for “root.” “(It’s a study program about) the Jewish roots of the Christian faith and seeing Jesus in His timeframe and understanding that as we walk the land,” said Newell. Pink Martini To Take Stage

The American Heart Association, with the support of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation, recently installed a new blood pressure monitoring kiosk at the Barnstormers’ stadium in Lancaster. Carol Culliton of the Gunterberg Charitable Foundation and representatives from the American Heart Association were on hand before the Lancaster Barnstormers game on July 18 for a ceremonial ribbon cutting. This is the first blood pressure kiosk the American Heart Association has installed in Pennsylvania. The kiosk is located inside the main concourse near the box office and is available for any member of the public to use during all events held at the Barnstormers’ stadium. The kiosk provides instructions to ensure the

user receives an accurate blood pressure reading and information to interpret their blood pressure reading and make healthy lifestyle choices that can help control their blood pressure. Users will also have the opportunity to register for the American Heart Association’s evidencebased blood pressure control tracker called “Check. Change. Control.” The program provides users with ongoing information and tips via email and helps them track progress toward lowering their blood pressure over time using an online tracker. Anyone in the Lancaster community can take advantage of the “Check. Change. Control.” program by visiting www.ccctracker.com/aha/ Gunterberg and entering campaign code GCFBP to register.

According to new blood pressure guidelines released in November that define high blood pressure beginning at 130/80, nearly half (46 percent) of U.S. adults may have high blood pressure. Uncontrolled high blood pressure raises the risk of stroke, heart attack or heart failure. It is sometimes called the “silent killer” because it has no symptoms. Improving access to blood pressure monitoring tools and education can help more individuals manage high blood pressure. For more information about controlling high blood pressure and other healthy living tips, readers may visit www.heart.org.

Pink Martini will come to Hershey Theatre, 15 E. Caracas Ave., Hershey, on Friday, Oct. 12. The show will take the stage at 8 p.m. Tickets are available at Hershey Theatre Box Office, by calling 717-534-3405 or 800-745-3000, and by visiting www.hershey entertainment.com or www.ticket master.com.

E-town Volleyball Tops Warwick, Solanco by Eric Pyles

Often times the success of a sports season can be heavily influenced by a team’s performance over the first few games. Start hot and that momentum can carry a team straight into the postseason, start cold and many times that team is home come postseason play. Despite an opening season loss to Palmyra, the Elizabethtown girls’ volleyball team is in the middle of a hot start. The Lady Bears rebounded from that August 31st setback with a second place showing at the Trinity Tournament on September 1st. E-town rolled through the morning Pool Play session with a perfect 6-0 mark and exited afternoon pool play with another three wins. Their 9-3 overall record in pool play dropped the Lady Bears into the quarterfinals of the championship bracket opposite Penns Valley. E-town dispatched the Lady Rams by a 25-16 count setting up a semifinal tilt with York Suburban. Elizabethtown handed the Lady Trojans their first loss of the day, 25-22, earning another crack at Palmyra, this time in the championship game. The Lady Bears were unable to solve their Lady Cougar problem as Palmyra claimed the tournament title with a 25-18 victory, leaving Elizabethtown to settle for silver.

GIRLS’ SOCCER The early portion of the 2018 season has been tough sledding for the Elizabethtown girls’ soccer team. Their season got off on the wrong foot after their opener with Dallastown was postponed a few days because of

Sydney Stewart, Grace Murray, Julia Rathsam, Ashley NyeSmith and Hayden Calaman fronted the Lady Bear attack. Stewart finished the tournament with 33 kills, 20 digs and 10 aces while Murray nearly matched that kill total, falling three shy while adding four blocks. NyeSmith chipped in with eight aces and a team high 38 digs while Rathsam enjoyed 52 assists and three blocks. Calaman shared setting duties with Rathsam, collecting a team high 63 on the day. E-town got back to regular season play on Sept 4th, taking out Warwick 3-0 with wins of 25-19, 25-9 and 25-17. Calaman earned top billing with a 15 assist and four ace game while Elizabeth Vuxta matched Calaman’s team high four aces. McKenna Dare was on the receiving end of some of those Calaman sets, finishing with eight kills while Stewart (six digs) and Krimson Dougherty (two blocks) anchored the defense. The Bears improved to 2-1 in the early going with another 3-0 victory, this one over Solanco last Thursday. Calaman directed the offense to wins of 25-13, 25-22 and 25-11 by dishing out 14 assists with Rathsam on the opposite end of those sets leading to eight kills. Vuxta added six aces and NyeSmith eight digs to round out the win.

storms but seemed to take a step in the right direction with a 2-0 win over Penn Manor. However, that September 4th victory was followed by losses to Cedar Crest and the make-up game opposite Dallastown to leave the Lady Bears at 1-2. Olivia Anson and Allison DeBerry led the way against the Lady Comets with DeBerry netting a first half score and setting up Anson’s second half tally. Kaitlyn Snyder did need 10 saves to keep Penn Manor off the board and record the clean sheet. Two days later the Lady Bears found themselves on the opposite side of a 2-0 final. Scores by Daniele Hess and Sydney Snyder allowed the visiting Lady Falcons to claim a 2-0 victory and dropped E-town to 1-1 on the season. Snyder (11 saves) and Elizabeth Carter (two saves) split time in goal for E-town. A week after the original date the Lady Bears were able to tangle with Dallastown. The Lady Wildcats handed E-town their second straight home loss courtesy of a 4-0 final. TENNIS The Labor Day heat wave that saw heat index readings reach triple digits forced the E-town girls tennis team to move their September 4th contest with Solanco to the 25th leaving just a September 6th match on last week’s slate. That showdown with LampeterStrasburg went to the Lady Pioneers by a 7-0 final, dropping Elizabethtown to 1-5 on the year. “We knew going into the year that we would experience some challenges,” said head coach Brenda McBride, “this being the first varsity experience that any of our top players have had, they are gaining valuable match experience and improving as the season progresses.” The E-town skipper added a final thought about her squad’s start, “We have seen some bright spots. Many of our matches have been closer than the score indicates and they are making their opponents work for their points. One of the great lessons of sport is to problem-solve and work through the challenges that inevitably come,” she added “If we continually progress in that area, then we will feel successful.” GOLF Count the golf team among those

Charger Volleyball Opens With Three Wins by Leah Sintic

Three up, three down-that was the rhythm of the Lady Chargers volleyball squad racking up three consecutive victories to open the season. “Everyone is playing healthy and our girls have really come together as a team unit,” explained head coach Kate Ferrari regarding the surge of momentum the Lady Chargers are experiencing. Key to igniting that momentum has been freshman Kami Mummau, who has been a driving offensive force, firing double digit kills in all of the Chargers games thus far. “Kami Mummau and Haley Witmer really seem to be in a zone in terms of setter/hitter combo,” elaborated Ferrari. “If we’re in a bit of a slump, heading to Kami with the set has made a huge difference. When she gets that kill it ignites the team.” Against West Shore Christian last Friday, Mummau nailed 15 kills over the course of the 3-0 contest (25-15, 25-14, 25-15). As demonstrated by the similarity of the set scores, the Chargers steadily held control of the contest. Grace Hilsher’s 15 digs were accompanied by four aces making her an all-around threat.

“Grace was hitting the center of West Shore’s defense which really helped us to capitalize. Our girls were covering our hitters and blockers, and digging up plays that were close to the net,” added Ferrari. The night before, the Chargers hosted Linville Hill Christian School, and dropped their only set of the week, but still rose to a 3-1 triumph (25-23, 25-22, 21-25, 25-18). “Linville was a tough competitorthey had some intense servers who challenged our passing game,” acknowledged Ferrari. “We had to make adjustments to be effective.” The adjustments paid off, as the Chargers toppled Linville, a team they have narrowly lost to in the past. Mount Calvary struggled most in the first and third set making hitting errors that converted to Linville points, but the Chargers still managed remain on top for the first. The third set loss was a setback the Chargers turned into incentive to close the game after set four. Using strong service, led by Kara Locker’s four aces, the Lady Chargers worked their way back into control. “Our girls have been really practicing various zones in serving and tonight it paid off,” celebrated Ferrari. “After winning against Linville

we really gained a morale boost and that sent us into West Shore’s match ready to execute.” The team’s first victory of the season came on the road with a visit to Columbia High School where they took down the Crimson Tide swiftly in three (25-7, 25-19, 25-15). Molly Bert dished out eight aces, while Witmer used her 12 assists to provide a variety of attacks that kept the Tide defenders scrambling. “Haley Witmer was able to mix up the sets in order to get everyone involved in the offense. Even when we had an off pass, Haley was able to set up the play and turn it into an aggressive attack in the back row. The girls did a nice job of covering and closing up any open spots on the court,” summarized Ferrari. GIRLS’ SOCCER Lady Charger soccer picked up a win and two losses, but provided plenty of positives to build on in the upcoming season. “We’ve had a high player turn over this year, and many of our returners are in new positions as well,” commented head coach Kim Schmitkons starting her second season at the helm. Saturday’s trip to Brandywine Heights resulted in a rainy 7-0 setback

to end the week, but came on the heels of a shutout of their own less than 24 hours earlier. On Friday night the Lady Chargers treated their home crowd to an exciting 4-0 victory over the New Covenant Christian Flames. Mere minutes after the contest began, the teams were forced to take an unscheduled and lengthy break due to thunderstorms. Rather than lose their focus, the Lady Chargers took advantage of the extra downtime to loosen up and subsequently owned the field in both halves, netting a pair of goals on both sides of the midway break. “We started the game playing kind of panicky,” noted Schmitkons. “We were able to regroup during the lightning delay and went back out to support each other on the ball and play each minute with intensity.” Brittney Taylor scored twice, while Julia Martin collected a goal and two assists, and Naomi Ewing chipped in both a goal and an assist. The Flames didn’t give up under the constant pressure, and managed to break away for several good looks at the Charger net, but MC keeper Leah Hawryluk was ready and waiting and scooped up six saves to stop the Flames from getting on the board.

In the first game of the season, Mount Calvary was paired against Susquenita, and resulted in a 4-3 loss. But the Chargers showed promise as they came from behind and nearly evened the score in the final minutes. “We struggled with our intensity,” acknowledge Schmitkons. “Naomi Ewing put in the effort to cover ground and held us in the game until we found a spark in the last 20 minutes.” The spark Schmitkons refers to was ignited by a pair of goals from Taylor and a penalty kick opportunity successfully converted by Julia Martin; all taking place in the latter end of the second half. While it wasn’t enough to overcome the four goals already secured by Susquenita, it proved the Lady Chargers have a lot to offer on the field. “Going forward we will be looking to start with that intensity and keep everyone involved for the whole 80 minutes,” added Schmitkons. Taking down York Country Day 6-0, in a pre-season scrimmage gave the Lady Chargers a glimpse of what they are capable of-and now they are looking to implement that same work in their regular season schedule.

“We have been focused on maintaining our shape and communicating. Brittney Taylor and Julia Martin stepped up against York Country and gave us some creative offense. Olivia Yordy stepped into the central back position and took ownership there,” reflected Schmitkons. The Lady Chargers are emphasizing a team mentality as they approach their season, working together as a unit instead of as individuals. Their team verse puts it this way, “Two are better than one, because they have a good reward for their labor. For if they fall, one will lift up his companion. But woe to him who is alone when he falls, for he has no one to help him up.” Ecclesiastes 4:9-10. BOYS’ SOCCER Continuing with a nine-year tradition, the MC boys’ soccer team kicked off their season with the Agape Cup, an annual matchup held against Lititz Christian emphasizing sportsmanlike conduct that brings honor and glory to the Lord. their comeback thanks to the senior’s strike in the 57th minute. The game remained knotted until the 81st minute when Bixler slipped a pass to Evan Schneider for the game winner. FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team has seen the early portion of their 2018 schedule beaten up by Mother Nature. The Lady Bears had what was supposed to be their season opener against Warwick moved from August 31st to September 14th due to rain while their September 6th tilt with LampeterStrasburg was bumped to September 18th due to lightning. E-town was at

least able to get the L-S game started before the light show began meaning the teams will resume the contest with the Lady Pioneers up 1-0 and 26:40 remaining in the opening half. In games the Lady Bears actually managed to start and finish, the results were less than desirable. A September 4th trip to Mechanicsburg resulted in a 3-1 loss while the Lady Bears participation in the Milton Hershey Tournament on Sept 8th provided two additional losses. E-town dropped their tournament opening game to the host Lady Spartans while falling to Shippensburg in the

their 4-1 mark on the day their best of the season to date. The Bears only loss was to Warwick by a mere 11 strokes. Alex Williams led the way, tying for top honors with Warwick’s Brock Fassnacht with a score of 33. Connor Krisko (42), Eric Gilbert (44), Matt Pottgeiser (44) and Alex O’Shea (52) rounded out Elizabethtown’s top five. BOYS’ SOCCER As the 2018 season kicks off, the E-town boys’ soccer team is on a quest to capture their third straight L-L title. That quest got off to a rocky start thanks to a 2-1 season-opening loss to Penn Manor. The Comets used first half scores from Hunter Enck and Mitchell Martin to jump out to a twogoal lead through 30 minutes of action. Tyler Bixler, with help from Jon Gartley, drew E-town within striking distance but the Comet defense stiffened, keeping the Bears at bay and securing the 2-1 final. Elizabethtown got on track two days later with a 1-0 victory over Cedar Crest. David Fry provided the setup for what proved to be the game winner despite the score coming in the game’s 12th minute. Jake Sevcik was on the receiving end of Fry’s pass and managed to beat Falcon keeper, Justin Hilty (three saves) to collect the score. Despite scoring just once E-town dominated possession leading to an easy day for Brecken Musser in goal. Musser’s next appearance between the pipes was more stressful as he needed seven saves to preserve a 2-1, overtime win over Central Dauphin on Sept 8th. With the win Elizabethtown was able to avenge the loss that brought their 2017 campaign to an end in the first round of district playoffs. As the game unfolded it looked like a repeat of that 2017 match-up Photo by Bob Diller with Central Dauphin’s Jason Kline E-town’s Alex Williams posted a round of 33 to tie Warwick’s putting the Rams up 1-0 in the first Brock Fassnacht for first place in the individual standings at last half. The Bears, behind Bixler, started Wednesday’s Section Two match at Meadia Heights.

consolation match-up. FOOTBALL Perfect no more. With a 29-6 loss to Conrad Weiser on September 7th the Elizabethtown football team and first year head coach Andy Breault fell from the ranks of the unbeaten. The Scouts picked up the victory by limiting a Bear offense that came in averaging 55 points and over 500 yards, holding E-town to a meager 165 of offense and one fourth quarter touchdown. That fourth quarter score, an eightyard strike from Cole Patrick to Luke Pierson might have erased the shutout but it did not remove the sting of the season’s first loss. Patrick, after throwing for over 400 yards in Elizabethtown’s wins over Donegal and Dover, finished with 113 yards and that lone TD pass. Pierson snagged three more balls to finish with four catches and 64 yards while Cole Livingston and Elijah Eberly accounted for the remaining three Photo by Bob Diller E-town completions. Chargers from pg 15 While the score ended 1-0 in favor of Lititz, the competition still allowed the team to gain valuable experience heading into the heart of their season. “The Agape Cup provides an opportunity for the teams to call attention to the Christian character they demonstrate on the field,” noted head coach Marc Myers. Agape is a Greek word meaning “love”, and when used in the New Testament very specifically is referring to the type of love demonstrated by God Himself. This love is not merely a feeling, but an action and commitment, the type of love required for the Creator of the world to die for mankind-His creation. Each year the dedication of this game serves as a reminder that while the athletes are opponents on the field, beyond the 80 minutes of competition, they are truly brothers in Christ serving their Savior. “It is important to instill in players the principles of hard work, playing with heart and desire, discipline, sacrifice, and a team-focus,” elaborated Myers. “Throughout the season they will be pushed and pulled, tackled and yelled at, both fail and succeed. Helping them learn how to compete in a Christ-like way will help them on their journey to become men of God.” GOLF Charger golf club is attacking each match with a purpose-and it turns

At times it is easy to quit, but the Lord provides strengththis important lesson is our focus for golf this year.” Refusing to quit, they showed a fighting spirit in their most recent match, and four-team event held at the Highlands of Donegal and were rewarded with a third-place finish. Hosting Dayspring Christian, High Point Baptist and Lancaster County Christian for the nine-hole round, the scorching temperatures were hard to ignore. With a heat index reaching above 100 degrees, the Charger team plugged away and encouraged each other to a 207stroke count, behind Dayspring’s 187, High Point’s 197, but enough to edge ahead of LCCS’ 209. “The team played great overall, and were happy to finish just ahead of LCCS for our first win of the season,” celebrated Owlett. CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health will hold “Creating Healthy Communities: An Evening With Former Secretary of Housing and Urban Development Julian Castro” on Tuesday, Oct. 23. The lecture portion of the event will take place from 7:15 to 9:15 p.m. at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. Members of the public may also attend an optional VIP dinner and reception beginning at 5 p.m. at Carr’s Restaurant, 50 W. Grant St., Lancaster. During the event, Castro will share about the challenges and opportunities he encountered when striving to create healthy and thriving communities, both locally and nationwide. He will speak about how his faith influenced his passion for improving the lives of individuals and families in the communities he has served. Castro served under President Barack Obama as the 16th secretary of the U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development (HUD) from 2014 to 2017. He oversaw 8,000 employees and a budget of $46 billion. Before serving as secretary, Castro was mayor of San Antonio, Texas. In March 2010,

Clara Ames, executive director of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), knows a bit about the history of the event now called Bike Millersville. “(The ride) is 19 years running, but it hasn’t always had the same name,” noted Ames. “It used to be called the Dream Ride.” Ames added that the sponsoring organizations of the event have changed over the past two decades since the ride was first held. Bike Millersville will be held on Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Winter Visual and Performing Arts Center, Millersville University, 60 W. Cottage Ave., Millersville. The event will open for packet pickup at 6:30 a.m., and the ride will start at 7:30 a.m., weather permitting. The ride will be held rain or shine, but delays may be made in the case of fog or other hazardous conditions. The ride will feature 5-, 20-, and 30-mile cycling tours and 1-, 2-, and 6.5-mile walking tours throughout the greater Millersville area. Rest stops featuring fruit, water, and snack foods will be located along the routes. The stops will also offer bike support. “There are a number of area bike shops that have partnered with (volunteers from) each of the nonprofits to sponsor the rest stops,” explained Ames. The organizations that have partnered to present this year’s ride include NLAM, which is an organization that offers mobile

psychiatric rehabilitation services and facilitates faith-based support groups for the purpose of strengthening individuals and families touched by mental illness, and Faith Friendship Ministries of Mountville, which provides residential care and housing, along with shared independent living situations for local individuals. The Lancaster Chapter Military Officers Association of America (MOAA) has presented the 2018 Lancaster Chapter Memorial Scholarship to Alison Smith, a graduating senior at J.P. McCaskey High School. The scholarship is provided for a Lancaster County high school senior who plans to attend post-secondary education and who has an immediate family member who has served, or is currently serving, in the U.S. military. Selection for the award is based on the individual’s scholastic record, extracurricular activities and community service, with emphasis on demonstrated leadership abilities.

Smith plans to attend the University of Pittsburgh’s College of Business Administration in the fall. She intends to pursue a dual major in marketing and supply chain management with a minor in Spanish. She also hopes to complete requirements for a certificate in international business. The $1,000 scholarship was presented at the high school awards assembly on May 16 by scholarship committee chair Col. George Resh and Joann McOmber in memory of Joann’s late husband, Cmdr. Gerald E. McOmber. Smith and her mother were also guests at a Lancaster Chapter MOAA dinner meeting on June 28 at Bent Creek Country Club.

Julia Connolly, executive director of Hands-on House, has great appreciation for the beauty of the challenging course that Hands-on House Half Marathon runners enjoy. While the half marathon is known for its challenging hills, Connolly delights in the bucolic scenery the run offers. “It’s a beautiful course with farms, trees, and a covered bridge,” she said. “It truly captures Lancaster’s character.” The 15th annual Hands-on House Half Marathon, which also offers 10K and 5K courses, will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, beginning at 8 a.m. All three runs will begin and end at Hands-on House, 721 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. The 10K utilizes part of the halfmarathon course, and the 5K winds through a local neighborhood. Strollers are permitted in the 5 and 10K runs, but pets are not allowed for safety reasons. Connolly noted that water stops and comfort stations will be available along the routes and that bagels and apples will be offered to runners at the end of the race. Each run will have its own start, and all runners will be chip-timed. Cash prizes will be awarded to the top three male and female halfmarathon runners, and all halfmarathoners will receive medals.

Prizes will also be given to the top three males and females in a number of age groups for the half marathon and to the top five males and females for the 5K and 10K courses. According to Connolly, race organizers have set a goal of attracting 800 to 1,000 participants this year. At its peak, more than 1,000 runners took part in the event. Registration opened earlier this year to give more runners a chance to sign up. Runners may register at www.handsonhouse.org/run/ or by searching for “Hands-on House Half Marathon, 10K & 5K 2018” at www.active.com. Half-marathon runners must register prior to race day, and online registration will end on Thursday, Sept. 27. Those wishing to participate in the 5K or 10K races may register ahead of time or on the day of the event beginning at 6:30 a.m. Packet pickup will be from 4 to 7 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 28, at Hands-on House and from 6:30 to 7:30 a.m. on the morning of the race. Free longsleeved tech shirts are guaranteed for runners who preregister for the events. While the Hands-on House race courses spotlight the hallmarks of Lancaster County scenery, the event also offers a unique opportunity for children and non-runners to enjoy the museum during
