ECHOS Plans First 30 In 3 Giving Event BY ANN MEAD ASH

Hannah Kline, a senior at Elizabethtown Area High School, is currently conducting a shoe drive to benefit orphaned children in Kenya.

sort them. People have different versions of wearable.” Hannah is working with Funds2Orgs, a nonprofit organization that repurposes the shoes. According to www.funds2orgs.com, the shoes are sold to microentrepreneurs for a small cost. Microentrepreneurs then mark up the shoes and sell them in their local communities for a fraction of the original price, but still for a profit. “They will take the shoes and fund microbusinesses in other countries. Their major goal is to help stimulate the economy,” said Hannah. As of early September, she had collected 1,100 pairs. “In return for 2,500 pairs of shoes, we will get $1,000. If we collect 5,000 pairs, they will give us $2,000, which is our goal,” she said. Once the shoes are collected,

Sarah Yohe, development director with Girls on the Run (GOTR), has an analogy concerning the different types and levels of anxiety people are feeling in relation to the pandemic. “ We are all in the same storm, but we all have our own individual boats with their own holes in them that we are trying to keep plugged to stay afloat,” she said.

When Hannah Kline of Elizabethtown was 10 years old, she and her friend Alisia Alvarez helped raise more than $8,000 to build a soccer field for orphaned children in Vietnam. Now 17 and a senior at Elizabethtown Area High School, Hannah is continuing to serve others through a shoe drive to benefit orphaned children in Kenya. The collection is being held for Brittany’s Hope, a nonprofit organization that provides humanitarian relief efforts, including food and health care, for children who live in orphanages worldwide. Brittany’s Hope also gives grants to qualifying families to help with the cost associated with international adoptions. Hannah’s family, which adopted

her from China, was able to do so through a grant received from Brittany’s Hope. Hannah proposed the idea of holding a shoe drive fundraiser after reading an article in the Brittany’s Hope newsletter about the food insecurity facing children in Kenya. “With the coronavirus, people don’t have extra money for their families, but people do have lots of old shoes,” Hannah noted. New and used shoes in any condition are being collected through Thursday, Oct. 15. Shoes can be dropped off at Brittany’s Hope on the back porch at 1160 N. Market St., Elizabethtown. “The shoes can be of any kind flip-flops, sandals, heels or sneakers - and in any condition,” Hannah said. “Ideally, the shoes should be in wearable condition, but we will

Katlyn Lantz, development coordinator with ECHOS (Elizabethtown Community Housing & Outreach Services), has fond memories of the organization’s first fundraising banquet, called the One Community Many Neighbors Celebration, which was held in fall 2019. “We all gathered together to hear about ECHOS’ mission and vision,” she recalled, noting that past ECHOS clients spoke at the event. “This year, we had hoped to do the same,” continued Lantz, who noted that the COVID-19 pandemic served to change the organization’s plans. Instead, ECHOS is putting together a different type of appeal, titled “30 in 3.” “It’s a virtual fundraiser,” explained Lantz. “We are going to try to raise $30,000 in three days.” The fundraiser will kick off at 3 a.m. on Tuesday, Sept. 22, and end at 3 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 24. Plans for the fundraiser include spotlight videos focusing on donors and clients and stakeholders in the community. According to Lantz, members of the ECHOS staff will provide Facebook

ECHOS provides a variety of services to the community from the Community Place on Washington (CPOW), a complex that is scheduled to break ground for an expansion on Friday, Sept. 11. Need for the facility increased by 20% last year. The year before that it increased 70%. But the winter shelter is only the beginning of ECHOS’ services to the community. Deb Jones, executive director of ECHOS, explained that the organization oversees 13 additional programs that offer community social services integrated with services designed to prevent and alleviate poverty with a goal of empowering stability among families and individuals in the Elizabethtown and Donegal school districts. Jones noted that the ECHOS team of 16 works

with 300 volunteers to help clients define and solve a crisis to go from surviving to thriving. “ We have family and individual support programs, addiction prevention,” she said, adding that in the organization’s past fiscal year, more than 800 individuals were helped. “We work with a family to help them holistically to address issues,” said Jones of the 2,000 work hours the team puts in yearly. “We look at the stability of housing, family dynamics. We teach soft skills, problem solving, and budgeting. This isn’t a Band Aid. It is helping (clients) to alleviate crisis in a way that

will stimulate growth.” Lantz noted that the response to the 2019 banquet was positive and that organizers would love to see that momentum continue. “We’re hoping for the same kind of outcome we had from our celebration last year,” she said. “We will have a small celebration at the end of it to thank our community. We are really excited.” Readers who are interested in taking part in the fundraiser should search for ECHOS on Facebook. Individuals who have specific questions may call 717-3610740 or email info@echos lancaster.org.

• Wash your hands often

• Maintain social distance — 6 feet

These methods have been shown to work. So let’s keep at it. Thank you for doing your part.

The initial live event will begin at 7 p.m. on Oct. 8. “The GOTR team will open up the evening by sharing our mission and our reasons for hosting this event,” said Yohe. Following the opener, the 56-minute documentary will be shown, and then a live, half-hour discussion with approximately four panel members from related fields, such as psychology and pediatrics, will be held. Audience members will be able to submit questions to the panel. During the next two days, GOTR members and their families will have the option to watch the entire event via the link. Because there are only a limited number of links available, organizers encourage GOTR members and families to register early. Sponsorships are being sought, and opportunities to donate will be offered at registration. “We are calling this a Thoughtful Fundraiser,” noted Yohe. This is not the first time GOTR has offered a film on a culturally significant topic with a panel discussion to its members and families. In January, the organization screened “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain” at the Ware Center in Lancaster. GOTR administration felt that this was an apt time to repeat that type of event, but this time in a virtual format. “When we have a pandemic, which we have all never experienced (before), we have to look at things differently,” said Johnson. “This needs to be part of what we do for our community.”

Shoe Drive from pg 1 Funds2Orgs will pick them up at Brittany’s Hope. “They will send a big 18-wheel semi-truck, and we will have to find volunteers to fill the truck with all the shoes that are rubber-banded together,” noted Hannah. “They will officially count as we (fill) the truck. It is free unless we don’t hit our goal; then we have to pay for shipping.” Hannah was adopted in 2006 from China, but waited longer than most children her age to join her new family, because her health condition required multiple surgeries. “I was 3 years old when I came to the United States,” she pointed out. Even at a young age, Hannah wanted to give back. The soccer field project that she took on came after learning how much orphaned children in Vietnam loved soccer but did

not have the equipment or the space to play. “We did a roller skating fundraiser at Doc’s,” she recalled, explaining how the money was raised. “We got Brittany’s Hope and other businesses to donate (prize) items. Fortunately, we had big donors who said they would match what we raised.” Mai-Lynn Sahd, executive director of Brittany’s Hope, said Hannah illustrates what it means to have a giving spirit. “It’s always moving to see kids helping other kids. It’s powerful,” she stated. “ We are deeply moved to have one of our own granted children help us complete the circle of giving.” For more information about the shoe drive, readers may contact Brittany’s Hope at 717-367-9614.
