As an orientation activity, incoming freshmen at Penn State Schreyer Honors College must write a letter to their future self that they can then pick up after graduation. Elizabethtown native Ellis Stump, who graduated from the Schreyer Honors College in May 2019, said that procrastinating on getting her own letter back turned into somewhat of a serendipitous experience. “It was one of my last days at Penn State, and I’d forgotten to pick up my letter,” recalled Stump. A final reminder prompted her to get the letter, and the encouragement from her younger self happened to come at a time when she really needed it as she had begun
doubting whether her writing career would amount to anything. “It was really inspiring and affirming. I kept telling myself (in the letter) that I was going to be a writer and be really successful,” See Stump pg 4
“The Only Coffee Shop in the City,” a play written by Elizabethtown Area High School graduate Ellis Stump (pictured), will make its New York City premiere on Oct. 1 at the Hudson Guild Theater as part of the New York Theater Festival.

Stump said. “I finished reading the letter and immediately got a call from a production company about a play I had written.” That play, “The Only Coffee Shop in the City,” will make its New York City premiere on Tuesday, Oct. 1, at the Hudson Guild Theater in New York City with subsequent performances on Saturday, Oct. 5, and Sunday, Oct. 6. It is part of the New York Theater Festival, a competition for plays and musical productions including full-lengths, oneacts, shorts, and solos. In “The Only Coffee Shop in the City,” a writer named Carrie heads to a new city following a melodramatic post-college breakup and begins navigating the Kübler-Ross model of the five stages of grief: denial, anger, bargaining, depression, and acceptance. Carrie and an ensemble of initial strangers explore independence, mental health, commitment, and more - all while keeping up an impeccable social media presence. “It’s about young adults figuring out the world, and it

touches on the concept of social media and the difference between who we present to the world and what is really going on,” she explained. “Of course, it’s totally inspired by my own experiences as well,” she added with a laugh. Stump not only wrote the play, but is now directing it as well. “I definitely have my fingers in a lot of roles,” said Stump. “I really try to embrace rehearsals with a lot of collaboration, so the actors can toss in their input.” Stump, who is the daughter of Ronda and Jim Stump of Elizabethtown, graduated from Elizabethtown Area High School in 2014. She went by her first name, Abby, then, before switching to her middle name, Ellis, in college. At Penn State Schreyer Honors College, she majored in English and media studies with an emphasis in film and minors in gender studies, theater, and psychology. She received the Paterno Writing Fellowship and the inaugural Donald P. Bellisario Communications Fellowship.
Stump currently resides in Brooklyn. In addition to directing “The Only Coffee Shop in the City,” she is a full-time screenwriter for Inkitt Galatea, a Berlin-based production company, and will begin as a dramatic writing candidate with The Actors Studio Drama School at Pace University in January 2020. Stump won the 2019 Vaclav Havel Library Foundation’s playwriting competition for her play “The People’s Toast.” As the winner, she earned a two-week residency in Prague this November, complete with roundtrip airfare, classes at the Academy of Performing Arts, and the opportunity to witness the international debut of her play. “It’s all just sort of fallen into place. It’s been a rush, for sure,” remarked Stump. “I’m asked how I’ve managed to do so much already, and I do credit a lot of that (success) to growing up in Elizabethtown. I have a lot of grit.” More information on “The Only Coffee Shop in the City” may be found at www.facebook.com/theonlycoffeeshop.

Quilt Show from pg 1 one of our vendors.” Award-winning quilter Cindy Carey will take students through her design process in the class “Quilting a Modern Quilt,” which will run from noon to 2:30 p.m. Althouse noted that this class might appeal to newcomers to quilting as well as those who would like more ideas on how to quilt the completed top. A small fee will be charged for admission to QSAM, and there will be an additional cost to attend the classes. Registration is required, as space is limited, and may be completed by visiting www.eventbrite.com and searching for the name of the class. The proceeds from the QSAM will be used to support LMQG programs and charity projects. Each year, the guild hosts several national speakers at events throughout the year; this year’s notable guests include Deb Grifa, Beth Reese, and Sherri Lynn Wood. The charity projects include making port protectors and mastectomy pillows for WellSpan Ephrata Community Hospital Center for Women’s Health, lap quilts for veterans, placemats for Ephrata Meals on Wheels, and fundraising quilts for the Alzheimer’s Association, Hospice & Community Care, and the Penn Manor Education Foundation’s Strong and Healthy Families initiative. The LMQG typically meets on the first Tuesday of the month at 7 p.m. at Ridgeview Mennonite Church, 3723 Ridge Road, Gordonville. Some months, the meeting is held on a Saturday if the speaker is also doing a workshop. “We have vendors that are artisans to appeal to everyone, not just quilters, hence the name Quilt Show and Artisan Market.” The vendors at the QSAM will include makers of pottery, wooden bowls and carvings, handweavings, glassworks, jewelry, clothing made from upcycled materials, and more, as well as several with quilting/sewing supplies and vintage buttons. Photos and information about the vendors are being posted on the LMQG Facebook page throughout September. Readers may visit www.facebook.com/LancasterMQG to view the posts. Althouse noted that some vendors will only accept cash. The QSAM will offer opportunities to win gift baskets, large and small quilts, and a new Bernina sewing machine. The seventh Lancaster Printers Fair will take place on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 20 and 21, in downtown Lancaster. The event started in 2013 as a nod to Lancaster’s place in printing history and features vendors and suppliers of letterpress equipment, foundry type, cards, posters, broadsides, ephemera, and more. To kick off the two-day event, members of the the .918 Club, which is organizing the fair, will show “Pressing On,” a film about the craft of letterpress printing, on Sept. 20 from 6 to 8:30 p.m. at The Candy Factory, located near the club’s Heritage Press Museum, 346 N. Queen St., Lancaster. There is no cost. The museum also will be open that evening with demonstrations and hands-
on activities. For the second year, three exhibits will be on display that night. Prints by Rebecca Blossler will be exhibited at the Pennsylvania Guild of Craftsmen, 335 N. Queen St., through October, and the guild will remain open until 9 p.m. on Sept. 20. Paper pulp sculptures by Angela Heaps will be in the windows at Madcap & Co., 310 N. Queen St., through Monday, Sept. 23. Prints by Martin Mazorra at Realm and Reason, 213 W. King St., will be on display until Monday, Sept. 30; the venue will be open until 10 p.m. on Sept. 20 and will host an afterparty reception. On Sept. 21, the street fair will be held from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on the closed-totraffic 300 block of North Queen Street,
where all nearby merchants will remain open for business. The street will be filled with vendors from across the region selling printing supplies and handmade products, and there will be printing demonstrations and food vendors. Activities for children will also be available. As a part of the street fair, the public can learn about H.N. Werkman, a printer from the Dutch province of Groningen during World War II, from noon to 3 p.m. Attendees can also try their hand at creating and printing a keepsake postcard. A salon-style group show of Lancaster printers will take place during the street fair, as well, and the exhibition will include work by Stephanie Hinish, Arthur Padelsky, Ben Williamson, Victoria Duggan, Brianna Maule, Gabby Shelly, Paula Mann, and Henry Gepfer. Returning this year will be a beer and burger garden presented by Voodoo Brewery and Cabalar Meat Co. A percentage of the sales will go to the .918 Club’s mission at the Heritage Press Education Center on the campus of Thaddeus Stevens College of Technology. Other food available will be Auntie Anne’s pretzels, as well as ice cream by Splits and Giggles. Beverages will be available, as well. See Printer’s Fair pg 9

Starting in 2020, the Pennsylvania Food Code will require that the person in charge of a food service operation be a certified food protection manager and that such a person must be on-site at all times during operating hours. That means at least one employee on each shift will need to be certified. To help food establishments meet this requirement, Penn State Extension is offering a ServSafe Food Safety Manager Course at the Farm and Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 4, and 9 to 11 a.m. on Friday, Oct. 11. The certification exam will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Oct. 11. This in-person training, taught by certified ServSafe instructors, will help partici-
pants learn how to prevent contamination of food by properly receiving, storing, preparing, cooking, cooling and serving the food, as well as proper methods of sanitizing food service facilities. Participants who complete the course and pass the multiplechoice exam with a 75 percent or higher score will receive a ServSafe Food Protection Manager certificate. This certification is good for five years. The set course fee covers the cost of the most recent edition of the ServSafe Manager book, as well as the exam, answer sheet and learning materials. To register, readers may visit https://extension.psu.edu/serv safe or call 877-345-0691, with more information about the course available by calling Stacy Reed at 717-394-6851.

With Two Wins, ET Booters Sit ATop Section 2 by Eric Pyles
The first few weeks of a sports season are always treacherous to navigate with all the new faces on both sidelines. Neither coaches nor fans know quite what to expect when their favorite team runs onto the field for the first few games of a season. But once games start taking place and coaches start making adjustments, results on the field can take a drastic turn. Take the Elizabethtown boys’ soccer team for instance. The Bears stumbled out of the gate and found themselves sitting at 2-2 after one week of action. A mere seven days later, E-town is rocking a 5-2 overall mark and is tied atop the Section Two standings with a perfect 2-0 mark. The hot stretch began on the 9th with a 1-0 win over McCaskey. The Red Tornado gave the Bears all they could handle for 92 minutes but Daniel Tema was able to convert a David Fry pass into the double overtime game winner. JJ Oberholtzer needed seven stops to keep McCaskey off the board. Two days later the Bears traveled to Harrisburg where a non-league showdown with Central Dauphin East ended much better than their last tangle with a Central Dauphin squad. The previous tangle with CD took place on September 7th but this time the Bears were on the right side of a 4-0 final. Oberholtzer faced just three shots as Elizabethtown controlled the action throughout. E-town held just a one goal lead at intermission with Adam Evans accounting for the score. The Bears broke the game open during a three-minute stretch that took place in the middle of the second half. Dax Kelly got things rolling with his score in the 64th minute while Sam Baker tacked on an additional insurance goal two minutes later. Evans converted for his second score
in the 67th minute, setting the final. Elizabethtown returned to L-L action on the 12th with a trip to New Holland. Evans punched in an unassisted score early, while Oberholtzer (four saves) and the rest of the Bears’ defense made the one-goal lead stand to complete the 3-0 week. GIRLS’ SOCCER The girls’ soccer team is developing a bit of a split personality as the 2019 season unfolds. The Lady Bears rock a perfect 4-0 mark against foes from the L-L but are struggling with opponents outside of the Lancaster-Lebanon League, starting with a 2-1 seasoning opening loss to Dallastown and continuing last week with a 3-0 defeat to Cumberland Valley. The result is a 4-2 overall record and a spot inside the top 10 of the District 3-4A power rankings. Against Cumberland Valley, the Lady Eagles pressed the action all game leading to a 15-11 edge in shots on goal, a 7-2 advantage in corner kicks and 17 Kaitlyn Snyder saves in the losing effort. Elizabethtown returned to L-L action on the 12th and posted a 3-0 win, topping Garden Spot for their second league victory of the week. E-town controlled the action which led to a 14-4 edge in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. Snyder needed just three saves to secure the shutout. A pair of Olivia’s did the heavy offensive lifting with Olivia Shuck finding Olivia Anson for goals in the 24th and 44th minute. Kaelynn Sheetz tacked on an unassisted score midway through the second half to make it 3-0. The Lady Bears opened the week on Monday with a 7-0 shellacking of McCaskey. E-town tallied a whopping 39 shots while Snyder needed just five saves to earn her second shutout of the season. Sophia Berry and Shuck paced the offense with two scores

each while accounting for half of E-town six goal opening half. Berry scored twice in the first 40-minutes while Shuck split her two tallies by half. Sheetz and Anson enjoyed one goal, one assist games while Madison Hurst also added a goal. TENNIS The girls’ tennis team got in a lot of work last week, hitting the courts three times in five days. The first of those trips resulted in a 7-0 win over Garden Spot on the 9th. Elizabethtown cruised, winning all four singles matches in straight sets. Kate Weissend made quick work of Jenna Mutlik at the top spot while
Lauren Masser got by Kendal Halsey, 6-2, 6-3, at number two singles. Araya Fahnestock followed with a win at third singles with Mia Giordano closing out with a 6-2, 6-1 win over Dani Holder. Fahnestock and Anna Bert blanked Holder and Patti Unruh in second doubles while Weissend and Masser enjoyed a win over Mutlik and Halsey at number one. Allison Evans and Kathryn Hackenberg accounted for the final win, topping Arwyn Robbins and C. Taranelli by an 8-3 count. Elizabethtown’s two remaining matches of the week ended in losses with Cocalico claiming a 6-1 victory on
the 11th and Lancaster Catholic posting a 7-0 win on the 13th. Weissend and Masser picked up the lone team point with the duo topping Cocalico’s Megan Rodriguez and Allie Dickson 8-2. VOLLEYBALL The Lady Bear volleyball team continues to roll, nabbing wins over Manheim Central and LampeterStrasburg last week to improve to 4-1 overall and 3-0 in Section Two. Elizabethtown opened with a 3-0 win over Central on Tuesday. “We struggled offensively throughout, so it was our defense that kept us in it and pushed us to win,” said head coach Jenna Griest. “Senior libero Ashley NyeSmith led our defensive efforts throughout the match and Sydney Stewart played lights out defense in the second set to help grind out the win.” Behind Stewart’s 10 kills and NyeSmith’s 17 digs, the Lady Bears posted won 26-24, 25-19 and 25-21 to lock up the victory. Hayden Calaman added 26 assists while both Kallee Locker and Krimson Dougherty tallied two blocks. Kierra Hinkle rounded out the team leaders with two aces. Two days later the Bears traveled to Lampeter and came home with their fourth shutout of the season, a 25-13, 25-9, 25-6 final. “Our offense was more productive
which lightened the load on our defense,” said Griest, “It was a great match to move some players in and out and give a few JV players some opportunities in the varsity match.” Hayden Calaman led the way with 18 assists while sister Haylee chipped in with four aces. NyeSmith finished with five digs while Stewart added nine kills and one block. E-town traveled to Landisville on Saturday for the Black Knight Invitational. Despite a solid effort came home without any hardware to add to the trophy case. The result was a 7-4 record with losses to eventual champion Hempfield in the semifinals and Berks Catholic in pool play. Etown countered the 2-0 pool play loss to Catholic with 2-0 wins over Penn Manor, Fleetwood and Spring Ford which earned the Bears a spot in the championship bracket. E-town opened with a 28-26 win over Garden Spot before falling to the Knights in the semifinals. GOLF The golf team took part in the penultimate match of the 2019 season on September 11th with a trip to Honeybrook Golf Club where Garden Spot played host. The Bears posted their second-best score of the season, a 352, but still finished behind Warwick, Ephrata and Spot, leaving See E-town pg 12

Charger Volleyball Runs Record to 6-0 by Leah Sintic
Lady Chargers volleyball continues to pile up the wins, reaching midSeptember having faced six opponents in the regular season, and conquering them all for a flawless 6-0 record. The latest three victims fell in a series of sweeps in which the Chargers never dropped a set. Friday night, Sept. 13, capped the week with a trip to Covenant Christian, and MC surged ahead 25-14, 25-15, 25-14. Kami Mummau blazed the way offensively with nine assists and eight kills, and Rachel Green and Grace Elder each dished a trio of aces to expedite the victory. Against Veritas Academy last Tuesday, the Chargers came out a bit hesitant, allowing the Monarch’s to hold early leads in all three sets. Once finding their rhythm, there was no stopping the MC squad. They took off to claim each set (25-19, 25-16, 25-11). “We got in a rut with passing. Once our passes were on target, we were able to get our offense running,” explained head coach Kate Ferrari. Kara Locker sparked some fight in the squad putting together 16 kills, 14 assists, and 3 aces. Gracie Hilsher (15 digs) and Brie Lehman (two blocks) set the defensive tone. Twenty-four hours earlier the story was much the same, this time at Fairfield High School, where the MC
club made quick work of the host team, (25-16, 25-10, 25-16). “I’ve been emphasizing just good clean play with the team,” commented Ferrari. “Reduce our errors and let the other team make the mistakes, and so far, that’s been working really well for us.” Locker again led multiple categories with a well-rounded 8 aces, 7 assists, and 6 kills. Mummau was an additional strong presence coming up with 6 digs and 6 kills. “We had some great setter/hitter connections between Kami and Kara,” noted Ferrari. GIRLS’ SOCCER Two wins and a draw described last week for Lady Charger soccer, outscoring their opponents by a differential of 11-4 over the three contests. Friday night under the lights, the MC club took down the Lions of Lancaster County Christian with a 2-0 shutout. Lead scorer Julia Martin, assisted by Naomi Ewing, achieved a brace, putting in one of two goals in the first ten minutes of play. Though the Chargers dominated possession and created multiple opportunities, their efforts were not rewarded again until, with less than two minutes remaining, Martin powered in the insurance goal. “Our midfield and forwards pressed balls, forcing poor clearances and keeping the ball alive up top,” pointed out head coach Kim Schmitkons. “We had players giving their best effort
everywhere on the field.” Though the Lions did not get many clear shots on goal, when they did, MC keeper Marlie Niedwick owned her goal, scooping up three saves to preserve the shutout. “Our defense played smart and had strong defensive tackles,” credited Schmitkons. “I’m proud of how these girls continue to improve and glorify God by giving their all with the talents He’s given them.” Last Tuesday, Sept. 10, the MC crew played its fourth game in five days-a challenge for any team, but particularly one short on subs, but the squad made it look easy, registering a 6-1 win over Harrisburg Academy. Both teams netted a goal in the first half, giving the game a level appearance at the halftime break, but the Lady Chargers were just getting started. Catching fire in the second half, the team collected an additional five goals to run away with the contest. Naomi Ewing gathered a hat trick to lead all scorers, and Elena Hatfield, Breanna Winters, and Olivia Yordy each added a goal to the count. Rewind to twenty-four hours earlier, the Chargers came to an impasse after battling back from a 3-1 deficit, and the grueling 100 minutes on the field culminated in a 3-3 draw against the High Point Eagles. The Chargers were the first to strike, thanks to an early goal from forward Ewing, assisted by freshman Rachel Thomas. Unfortunately, the Eagles retaliated with a trio of goals all before the first half expired. Facing a 3-1 deficit in the second, things looked dire for the Lady
Matt Owlett. Chargers, but lead scorer Julia Martin carding a 46. D. Smullen’s performance was “Our players produced some of the changed the outcome, netting two goals in the final 15 minutes of play to best scores of the year in this nine- accompanied by a 52 from Luke hole match,” pointed out head coach propel the game into extra minutes. See Chargers pg 12 A short roster, riddled with injuries, forces the MC club to play the majority of their schedule without the luxury of substitutions; a reality only emphasized as the score remained the same extending the contest into a second overtime period. “We are super impressed and proud of how the girls played out the last 35 minutes,” praised Schmitkons. “Every single player had a big moment somewhere in those 35 minutes which gave us just what we needed to stay alive.” Both teams showed their tenacity, getting offensive opportunities, but defense prevailed and the double OT showdown closed with the stalemate holding at three goals apiece. “We’re emphasizing all these individual contributions and how they build us into a stronger team, just as in the body of Christ we build each other up through encouragement and communication while each uses our talents for God’s glory,” concluded Schmitkons. GOLF The Chargers put together an improved nine holes at Four Season Golf Course last Friday, falling slightly behind in the team totals, but displaying individual growth and achievement. High Point took the match with a collective 174, followed by Dayspring (179), Lancaster County Christian (190) and Mount Calvary (216). done in the 1-0 CCAC win. The lone goal of the contest came late in the second half, neither team had netted a goal and appeared locked in a defensive showdown, but the Chargers earned a free kick opportunity and capitalized when it mattered. Despite Brandywine edging ahead for the win, MC’s freshman keeper Regan Mummau held his ground in goal, gathering 10 saves. Tuesday’s trip to Lancaster County Christian was a low scoring affair, but the Chargers got the job
the Bears with a 13-12 mark with one match remaining. “Without saying, this was a tough pill to swallow,” said head coach Dave Kline., “To have only 11 shots between first and 4th ends up pretty much defining the final standings.” Alex Williams carded the fourth best score of the day with his round of 80. Eric Gilbert (86), Will Schaffer (90) and Weston Kolaric (96) rounded out the top four. FIELD HOCKEY The 2019 field hockey season isn’t playing out like anyone in Elizabethtown had hoped. The Bears are 2-5 overall and 1-2 in L-L play. Despite the early season struggles, head coach Cindy Telenko says, “the girls are having fun and just playing good field hockey,” which led to the Lady Bears’ first league win on the 10th. Elizabethtown used Sophie Brinkman’s first half score that came off a Mackenzie Hammaker setup to secure the win. “We were really hungry for Cocalico,” said Telenko, “Losing one and taking them to a tie last year was something the girls remembered and they wanted that ‘W.’ That was probably one of our best played games yet this season.” Two days later, they fell to Garden Spot by a 2-1 count. Elizabethtown fell behind early and trailed by that one goal until just 10 seconds remained in regulation. That is when Hammaker fed Alisia Alvarez for the equalizer. The Spartans scored the game winner in overtime but Telenko remained upbeat. “We applauded their efforts. They fought to the end.” CROSS COUNTRY E-town cross country’s weekly L-L clash took them to Landisville on September 10th for a showdown with Solanco, Ephrata and the host Black Knights. “It was a terrific meet for the girls’ team as they beat Solanco and Photo by Bob Diller managed to squeak by Ephrata by a Riley Drager returns a kickoff for the Bears during their 49-12, point,” said head coach Mark Section Two loss at Cocalico last Friday.
