Disaster Relief from pg 1 The 42nd annual Brethren Disaster Relief Auction will be held at the Lebanon Valley Expo Center on Friday and Saturday, Sept. 21 and 22, beginning at 9 a.m. The auction, in cooperation with the Atlantic Northeast and Southern Districts of the Church of the Brethren, began in 1977 and has provided more than $15 million in disaster relief to victims of natural disasters both in the U.S. and internationally. Funds raised by the auction not only pay for emergency supplies for disaster victims, but also support volunteer disaster relief trips throughout the year. In the past few years, funds and volunteers from the auction have helped immediate relief efforts and long-term cleanup and rebuilding from hurricanes in Florida and Louisiana to a tornado in Campbelltown.

The event will include a general auction, a children’s auction, a quilt auction, a themed basket auction, a silent auction, a heifer auction, a coin auction and two pole barn auctions. The two-day event may have as many as five auctions happening simultaneously. Children’s activities this year will include the children’s auction, specializing in new items for children to be bid on only by children. A Children’s Store will offer quality used items at reasonable prices, and a balloon artist will create balloon animals for children. Also available for children, weather permitting, will be free barrel train rides, pony rides for a nominal donation, face painting and a concert by Phredd. The event will include a car show and a 5K Run for Relief, as well as an area for vendors of

A dunk tank will also be part of the day’s festivities. MCCS high schoolers will volun-

Proceeds from the auction support the school’s operational expenses as it fulfills its mission to come alongside parents to educate children and youths academically and spiritually. According to Miller, 450 students are currently enrolled at MCCS, representing four counties and more than 80 local churches. Student tuition accounts for 70 percent of the school budget, while fundraising efforts like the auction fill in the rest. The target fundraising goal for this year’s auction is $180,000.

“All of the money raised that weekend helps to support our school and our students,” explained Miller. “We want to glorify the Lord and thank Him for all He has done in our school already.” For anyone who may not be able to attend but would still to like to bid on items, or for those who want a sneak peek of what will be offered, the auction will feature online bidding and browsing at www.mccsauction.net. GTGH Fair from pg 1 others. In addition, fair-trade items and food will be available for purchase, and an educational presentation for children will be included. Lancaster Farm Sanctuary, founded by Jonina Turzi and Sarah Salluzzo, is a nonprofit micro-sanctuary created to advocate for farm animals. “We have a few acres, and we have a few ambassadors for each species,” explained Turzi. “We rescue animals, and we hold public events where humans can interact with the animals and hear their stories.” Turzi noted that the animals at the farm were rescued from abusive or neglectful situations, but they are not available for adoption. She listed two types of chickens, sheep, dairy cows, pygmy goats, a turkey, and several ducks that now live permanently at the sanctuary. More information about

Open House from pg 1 the organization may be found at www.lancasterfarmsanctuary.org. Brendan Stengle of Music for Everyone said that the organization has provided Lancaster with thousands of musical moments through its downtown piano program, but what is not as well known is how many grants have been given to local school districts in the dozen years Music for Everyone has existed. “Last year, we gave $112,000 in grants to 13 different school districts,” said Stengle. “As an organization, we have invested more than $1.6 million in direct support for instruments.” Stengle said that the organization is currently purchasing instruments in bulk to stretch its buying power. “Over the next five years, our goal is to repair every school-owned instrument in Lancaster County,”

said Stengle. The story of Music for Everyone may be explored by visiting https://musicforevery one.org. Gwen Didden, director of Faith Friendship Ministries in Mountville, said that the ministry cares for low-income individuals with mental health issues in a personal care facility based on the Nehemiah Homes model that offers interdependent living experiences. More information about the organization may be found at www.faithfriendship.org. Beth Horst, who founded The Edible Classroom with Grace Julian, said that they are excited to be working with local schools to create or maintain learning gardens. “We work to customize a program for the teachers, and everything is hands-on and experiential,” said Horst, who noted that summer programming is offered as well. “From seed to table, (the students) learn how to plant, tend, harvest, and eat the food they have grown,” said Horst. Information

about can be found by visiting www.theedibleclassroom.org. GTGH founder Jenn Knepper noted that this year, the fair will be held close to Monday, Dec. 10, which is Human Rights Day. Human Rights Day was first celebrated in 1948, making 2018 the 70th anniversary of the first observance. “ We will have a scavenger hunt for the children to find various declarations of the articles for human rights from among the nonprofits at the event,” said Knepper. Participants who complete the scavenger hunt will be eligible to receive a book about human rights. A staffed human rights display will offer information and provide interested parties with the opportunity to ask questions. Readers who would like to learn more about GTGH may visit www.giftsthatgivehope .org/lancaster or search for “Gifts That Give Hope: Lancaster’s Alternative Gift Fair” on Facebook.

The Masonic Village and Elizabethtown (MV&E) Model Railroad Club will host its first open house after the summer work season on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. The community is invited to come see the club’s G-gauge, O-gauge, S-gauge, HO-gauge, N-gauge, Z-gauge, and standard-gauge trains and trolleys laid on 1,600 feet of track. 2, his father presented him with a Lionel train set that was his first foray into what has become a lifelong model railroading hobby. “It was something that was instilled in me, and I just had this ambition,” said Stellar. Tickets will not be sold at the individual tour sites. The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania houses 100 historic locomotives and railroad cars, a working restoration shop, an education center, a library and archives, exhibits, and a museum store. To learn more, readers may visit the aforementioned website or call 717-687-8628. This will be Stellar’s sixth year participating in the Garden Railways Tour. Aside from supporting the mission of the museum, he enjoys having the opportunity to watch the faces of visitors as they step into his backyard and their eyes light up. “I think it’s just the overall effect, because they aren’t expecting to turn around the corner and see all of this,” said Stellar.

small and gradually adding on, he opted to go big from the start. “At my age, I knew what I wanted to do and knew that it’d be a oneand-done thing,” said Stellar. The approximately 30-by-70yard layout features a doubletrack railway with G-scale trains and a multitude of buildings nestled among eye-catching gardens. For the buildings - which include a train station, a power plant, a coal mine, a church, houses, barns, and more - Stellar worked from kits or modified birdhouses that fit his vision. Antique vehicles dot the roadways, and last summer Stellar added a small pond and babbling waterfall. Battery-powered trains travel along tracks that swirl throughout the yard at several levels of elevation, disappearing from time to time under tunnels or the deck before reappearing to cross bridges and trestles all hand-built by Stellar. “It’s all one continuous loop, and I can run three trains at a time,” Stellar noted. The tracks also lead through a small doorway into the garage, where they can loop around Stellar’s workshop before returning outdoors. Just how many hours go into maintenance and upkeep for the layout and garden is tough to say, but the entire project is a labor of love for Stellar. Railroading is in his blood and has been a part of his life since he was a child. “As a kid, my parents would take me to the Reading Railroad in the stroller, and it was something that just stayed with me,” he recalled. Stellar’s grandfather worked as a tower operator at the Reading Railroad, where several of his uncles established careers as well. When Stellar reached the ripe old age of

Harriers Teams Combine for 5 Wins at Solanco by Eric Pyles

was unable to replicate the success of the Lady Bears with a 22-35 loss to Penn Manor keeping the Bears from a perfect mark but wins over Solanco (17-38) and Ephrata (26-31) still made it a good day. Jesse Myers led a trio of runners that finished inside the top 10, taking fourth with a time of 18:01. Nat McCloud and Garrick English both finished 30 seconds later to claim seventh and eighth respectively. Alex Hartman just missed out on the top 10, taking 12th instead with a time of 18:59 while Nathan Johnson finished up the scorers with a 17th place time of 19:33. GIRLS’ SOCCER Just shy of the midway point in

their 2018 season, the Elizabethtown girls’ soccer team is still finding their way. The Lady Bears appeared to be on the right track after opening last week with a resounding win over McCaskey but losses to Cumberland Valley and Hopewell Valley coupled with a 1-1 deadlock opposite Garden Spot left E-town at 2-4-1 and still in search of the correct path. Kaelynn Sheetz’s hat trick paved the way in the 7-0 stomping of McCaskey on the 10th, leaving Kaitlyn Snyder needing just two saves to pickup the shutout victory. Jasmine Garcia picked up two scores during the domination that saw the Lady Bears post an 18-2 edge in shots. Amber Bostdorf

and Abigail Dehmey cleaned up the scoring with first half goals that helped Elizabethtown hold a 4-0 lead at intermission. The Lady Bears were back on the pitch one day later, this time in Mechanicsburg where they fell to Cumberland Valley by a 3-0 count. Snyder finished the Lady Eagle barrage with 19 saves. E-town found themselves in a much tighter affair when they battled Garden Spot on the 13th with the two sides playing to a 1-1 draw. Erna Hamzic put the host Lady Spartans up early with her score in the 10th minute leaving the Lady Bears to play catchup the entire game. Bostdorf

The seemingly never-ending rain stopped long enough for the Elizabethtown cross country teams to finally participate in a regular season meet. The Bears battled Solanco, Penn Manor and Ephrata on the 11th and came away with a 5-1 combined record on the day. Three of those wins came from the Lady Bears who posted three of the fastest times ever on Solanco’s course, leading to wins over Solanco (15-45), Penn Manor (22-33) and Ephrata (21-34). Katie Locker took top honors on the day with a time of 20:02 which is also the second fastest time on the course behind the 19:50 turned in by Penn Manor’s Greta Lindsley back in 2012. Cat Shontz crossed the finish line just a second behind Locker while Madeline Quinn finished in 20:07 to take third. Young Chargers Battle and Look to Improve “Though we are all disappointed with the loss and allowing four goals, I’m very proud of the effort and fight of all the players, concluded Myers. VOLLEYBALL The only Mount Calvary team not greatly affected by the continually damp weather is the Lady Charger volleyball squad-and they are taking advantage of every opportunity to get on the court, improving their record to 6-1 with the addition of three wins and one loss last week. Wrapping up the exhausting fourgame week at West Shore Christian, the Chargers secured their third victory of the week in a four-set exchange (25-4, 24-26, 25-8, 25-17). Haley Witmer served the first rotation, going up 13 points before surrendering the serve. Passing errors and inconsistencies caused the Chargers to falter in the second set, but they regained control in the third. “Haley was able to connect with both outside hitters, Kami Mummau and Kara Locker, to earn us a good lead, explained head coach Kate Ferrari. A fourth set included more of the same great energy for the Lady Chargers with Witmer finishing the contest with 27 assist and 9 aces, Mummau nailed 28 kills and 9 digs, and Brie Lehman came up with two blocks. Friday night’s 3-0 loss to the Covenant Christian Falcons marked the first defeat for the Lady Chargers this season (25-23, 25-23, 25-13), and was a tough evening as the team played without two of their starters. The Chargers narrowly lost set one after a back-and-forth battle of lead changes. Coming out hungry for redemption in set two, the Lady Chargers went on a 6-0 run with Witmer serving. After such a strong start, they managed to hold the lead until the Falcons fought back to even the score at 17 before going ahead to take set two by the same score. “We struggled to get in a rhythm. When we got the ball back and had an opportunity to capitalize we struggled to keep our serves in the court, explained Ferrari. Tuesday’s 3-1 win over Veritas Academy was a highlight for the week, with both offense and defense clicking for the Chargers the more they communicated as a team (25-19, 25-20, 24-25, 25-13). “Our offense was on in this match. Kami Mummau was smart with her plays, and we had strong defense

Digging deep to finish strong, Naomi Ewing pressured a West Shore possession, came up with the ball, and fired a shot from the top of the 18 to give the Chargers the golden goal with 14 minutes left on the clock. Heading into Friday’s clash with Lancaster County Christian, Schmitkons set the tone for what she expected to see from her players. “I wanted to see us playing with passion and desire the whole 80 minutes. We have emphasized our need to communicate consistently with each other and become passing options to support each other. We played both games with low numbers, so every player needed to be giving their best effort, explained Schmitkons. After dropping the third set, the Veritas momentum was building, but the Lady Chargers kept cool and amped up their communication, finishing the contest in four sets. “Our girls truly play best when they communicate on the court, she added. Key to turning the tide back to Charger favor was sophomore Rachel Green who dished out 10 aces over the match. “Rachel’s serves were just proving to be a challenge for the Veritas team to play back. She was an important part of the fourth set, acknowledge Ferrari. Mummau fired 15 kills over the net, Witmer supplied 16 assists, and Locker contributed 15 digs. Last Monday, the team kicked off their marathon week with a decisive 3-0 triumph over Fairfield (25-21, 25-17, 25-21). “Our attacking game was strong and our serving game was as well, noted Ferrari. Since becoming the director of advancement at Mount Hope Nazarene Retirement Community (MHNRC), 3026 Mount Hope Home Road, Manheim, Kris Wilson has had the chance to hear more and more people mention that it is one of Manheim’s bestkept little secrets. While Wilson agrees with that sentiment, ultimately her desire is to make sure that more people know about the care that is offered to residents at MHNRC. Wilson first learned about MHNRC as she was searching for a retirement home for her mother. Walking inside, she was immediately struck by its cleanliness, the cheerfulness of those working, and the warmth of the overall environment. She has found it to be a wonderful fit for her mother. “I quickly realized how special Mount Hope is. The sheer size and this kind of space just lend itself to a family feel,” relayed Wilson. “The nurses who interact with my mom have such a special way with her, and really all of the staff do.” MHNRC, a nonprofit ministry of Grace Point Church of the Nazarene, was named a five-star, deficiency-free skilled nursing facility by the Pennsylvania Department of Health this year. “Those are two things that are really hard to get,” Wilson remarked. According to

Wilson, more than 85 percent of MHNRC residents are on Medicaid, and in 2017 alone the retirement home gave more than $1,240,600 in charitable care. Being able to fulfill its mission of providing quality, affordable care to the low-income and disabled elderly population is something that Wilson said is made possible only through the support and generosity of the community. Two major fundraising events are coming up this fall, and Wilson emphasized that all of the proceeds raised will go right back into supporting the residents of MHNRC. On Saturday, Sept. 22, the community is invited to a Harvest Festival and Pig Roast at MHNRC from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Musical entertainment will be provided throughout the day, and antique tractors will be on display. A bounce house, barrel train rides, wagon rides, feed sack races, relays, and a pedal tractor pull will be available for children to enjoy free of charge. Registration for the pedal tractor pull, which is open to youths ages 3 to 14, will begin at 1 p.m. For a set fee, children and youths can build a “Pig Pal” complete with stuffing and a T-shirt. New for this year will be a live auction, beginning at 3 p.m. A variety of items and experiences will be available for folks to bid on, including tickets to area entertainment and attractions, getaway

The Central Pennsylvania Handbell Festival (CPAHF) presented a $500 check to the Forever Friends Bell Choir on Aug. 20 to provide financial assistance for its bell ministry. The funds were raised at the March 10 CPAHF held at Lebanon Area Evangelical Free Church in Jonestown. Forever Friends is a monthly outreach program held at Palmyra Grace Brethren Church that offers additional support to all individuals in the community, including those with intellectual disabilities, autism, or both who have difficulty attending a typical worship service and prefer a more relaxed atmosphere. Forever Friends is expanding the program to include an inclusive, mixed-ability handbell choir that will meet three times per month for music and fellowship. A local handbell musician and an occupational therapist are working together to increase the ease of playing handbells for people of all abilities. Participation
