A Collection Of Craftsmen BY CATHY MOLITORIS
lizabethtown is evolving. The town is bursting with small businesses, and Carrington Creasy wants to shine a spotlight on them. Creasy, who co-owns Cider Press Market on Market Street with her mother, Kirstie Williams, is hosting the first E-Town Evolution event. The event will be held from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 25, at the Elizabethtown Fairgrounds, 900 E. High St. “We’ll have a variety of vendors,” said Creasy, who described the event as “a collection of craftsmen.” About 30 artisans will sell paintings, candles, custom mugs and homemade soap. “I make jewelry, and my mom does floral wreaths and arrangements,” Creasy stated. Her grandmother’s homemade afghans and washcloths will be available for purchase as well. E-Town Evolution will also feature food trucks, including What’s For Supper, as well as live music performed by Steven Kissinger

from noon to 3 p.m. “He’s local to E-Town, so I’m really excited about that,” Creasy remarked. The event will also include activities for children. “A lot of times, when people go to craft shows, the kids get bored, so we’ll have lots of things for kids to do,” Creasy noted. “We’ll have face painting by donation only, barrel train rides, a bean bag toss and more.” Proceeds from the event will benefit three local nonprofits Pitties.Love.Peace, Hope’s Haven Rescue and Youth Camp and the Wolf Sanctuary of PA. Both Pitties.Love.Peace and Hope’s Haven will have booths at the event selling their merchandise. Creasy, who also works as a fulltime nurse, and Williams opened their business in November of 2020. They sell revived furniture, florals and home décor. The store’s name pays tribute to the family patriarch, Darl Williams, who is known for his freshpressed apple cider from his antique cider press.

Fun For All At The Rissers Picnic
BY CATHY MOLITORIS
The motto of Lifecycles is “Do hard things,” and for 60 days this summer, a team of bicyclists did just that. Eight boys and three adults rode 3,700 miles, from Sunset Beach, Ore., to Cape Henlopen, Del., as part of the Trans Am Extreme Challenge Ride. The ride is a project of Lifecycles, a nonprofit mentoring program committed to building young people of character through bicycling.
Rissers Mennonite Church’s community picnic will feature children’s activities and more.
“It’s important for us as a church to be connected to our community,” said Arlene Heistand, chair of the social committee of Rissers Mennonite Church. With that goal in mind, the church will hold a community picnic on Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning at 4 p.m. The festivities will be held at the church, 8360 Elizabethtown Road, Elizabethtown. “We will have lots of activities for children,” Arlene said, noting that a presentation by Ryan Bridge, The Bug Man, will be among them. “He will be bringing live insects and

Friends In Action International (FIA), a nonprofit organization located in Middletown, recently received a fourstar rating from Charity Navigator, an independent charity evaluator. Only a quarter of the 1.5 million charities rated have achieved this status. In 2022, Friends In Action will celebrate its 30th year of “supporting mission work in areas of limited infrastructure by using construction projects and practical service to speed the Gospel to those who have never heard.” “Friends In Action is committed to stretching each dollar and prayer invested to do the most good, for the greatest number of people, to the highest glory of God,” said Tim Johnston, FIA’s executive director. “We owe this to our supporters and funders and are happy to be honored by Charity Navigator.” The four-star rating is the highest rating offered by Charity Navigator and verifies that FIA demonstrates strong financial health and a commitment to accountability and transparency. A detailed review of financial documents, such as the organization’s Form 990 and audited financials, as well as key policies indicated that FIA adheres to sector best practices and executes its mission in a financially efficient way. FIA has also achieved GuideStar.org’s Platinum Rating, the site’s highest rating, for integrity and GreatNonProfit.org’s badge as a 2021 top-rated nonprofit. Readers who would like to learn more about Friends In Action can participate in the FIA Mission Banquet to raise awareness and funds for Christian mission outreaches. This event will be held on Friday, Oct. 29, at the Harrisburg
Hershey Sheraton Hotel, 4650 Lindle Road, Harrisburg. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m. A served buffet dinner will feature beef tips, lemon herb chicken, and assorted desserts. The evening’s program will occur from 6 to 9 p.m. The banquet will include a show of appreciation for volunteers, donors, and sponsors; videos from West African villagers and the NiVan people groups of Vanuatu; and testimonies from the field. Attendees will hear stories about the impact water projects are having on indigenous people groups who have yet to hear the Gospel. Games, prizes and giveaways, auctioned items, and an African drum expo will also be part of the event. To purchase tickets or sponsor a table of eight people, readers may contact 717-546-0208 or fia-usa@fiaintl.org by Friday, Oct. 1. Online registration is available at www.fiaintl.org /banquet. FIA has announced that $200,000 in funds are available to match any donated to the organization’s water projects in Africa or Vanuatu during the night of the banquet. Friends In Action’s Charity Navigator rating is available at www.charitynavigator.org/ein /770296087. Readers can also learn more about FIA at www.fiaintl.org.

Lifecycles from pg 1 “It was quite an adventure,” said Mike Wise, one of the adults who participated in the cross-country ride that began June 10 and ended on Aug. 8. “When I first heard it was going to be 60 days, I thought, ‘I can do 60 days, no problem.’ I had no idea how long 60 days would really be.” The group took a northern route across
the United States. “The first five to seven days were rainy,” Wise recalled, of the group’s journey through Oregon and Washington. They biked through thunderstorms, torrential downpours and unseasonably cold, wet weather. But they never gave up, Wise said, and they also encountered unforgettable sights along the route.
The Lifecycles team was (back, from left) Al Vega, Zach Greineder, Liam Howell, Micah Lapp, Micah Clark, Mike Wise, Michelle Deller (front), Monny Smith, Zander Malanchuk, AJ Vega and Jaerrid Strawser.
The Lifecycles team reaches the finish line in Delaware.

“A big highlight was Yellowstone National Park,” he said. “We rode through Beartooth Highway. … We rode 27 miles uphill. It was a crystal-clear day, and you could see for miles. It was just beautiful.” The participants had concerns ahead of time that they’d all make it up the incline - and then concerns about coming down through hairpin turns and steep drop-offs. Despite the challenges, the riders experienced no major health concerns or problems - only some muscle aches, blisters and irritated asthma. Joining Wise on the trip were youth team members Zach Greineder, Liam Howell, Micah Lapp, Micah Clark, Monny Smith, Zander Malanchuk, AJ Vega and Jaerrid Strawser, along with adults Al Vega and Michelle Deller. Each day of the trip kicked off with a text of encouragement and Scripture from Lifecycles founder Lee DeRemer, followed by a ride to the evening’s stop. “We’d go out to dinner at night, and that’s when we could really bond, since we couldn’t talk to each other much during the rides,” said Wise, a retired art teacher from Manheim who joined Lifecycles four years ago. The trip brought out the best and the worst in everybody, Wise stated, adding, “We all had our moments when we were struggling in different ways, either physically or emotionally, but the boys all did great. They represented Lifecycles and the Lord well.” At 63, Wise said he isn’t sure he’s up for another cross-country bike ride, but he knows the memories from this one will last for years. “One of the boys, after the trip was over, came up to me and said, ‘Can you help me with my devotions? Lady Bears Blank Garden Spot Booters
The old saying that ‘there is no place like home’ proved to be true for the Elizabethtown girls’ soccer team. The Lady Bears opened their 2021 home slate on September 9th by throttling Garden Spot, 4-0. Jena Witters was the star, scoring all four goals with help from Liana Endy, Lily Heistand and Olivia Shenk after staying solo for the game’s opening score. Two days later, however, Governor Mifflin handed Etown a 6-3 setback. Heistand, Shenk and Witters picked up one score each while Keegan Miller turned away five shots in the loss. A second home setback came on the 13th with Ephrata coming out on top, 3-1. Miller tallied 13 saves while Witters fed Taryn Hummer for the Lady Bear score. BOYS’ SOCCER With the Lady Bear soccer team enjoying the comforts of home, the boy’s squad hit the road for two of their past three affairs. The Bears dropped all three games by a combined 6-1. E-town opened that stretch on the 9th with a 3-1 defeat by Garden Spot. Chaz Mowrer nabbed Elizabethtown’s lone goal and Dominic Santana finished with eight saves. One day later the Bears welcomed Palmyra to town with the Cougars earning a 2-0 victory. “Exceptionally strong and well organized; a highly motivated group that will make some noise in Mid-Penn,” said head coach James Sostack of the victory. Santana finished with seven saves. Another day, another roadie,
this time a September 13th trip to Ephrata that resulted in a 1-0 loss. “It was a tough evening for the Bears looking to create their own luck. We hope to regroup before the game against Manheim,” Sostack said. Santana added three saves to his season totals. TENNIS The Lady Bears kept their undefeated record by knocking off McCaskey and Lampeter-Strasburg, improving to 7-0 just past the mid-point of the regular season. E-town enjoyed a quick 5-0 sweep of the Red Tornado on the 10th followed by a 5-2 triumph over L-S on the 13th. The Lady Bears swept singles play in both matches with Alli Evans, Rylee Bender and Julia Anderson doing the work opposite McCaskey with Nizaly OrtizKreiner joining the trio to complete the Lady Pioneer sweep. Ortiz-Kriner added two doubles wins to her singles victory, teaming with Anderson for the lone doubles win on the 13th and with Kathryn Barraclough for another win against McCaskey. Julia Laszakovits and Becca Mink finished off the McCaskey win with a straight set doubles victory. VOLLEYBALL Three matches might not make much of a season, but the Lady Bear volleyball team is still riding high with a perfect 3-0 mark. The mark includes wins over Cocalico (3-0), and Ephrata (3-1) combined with a sweep of Manheim Central to open the season. Meaning the Lady Bears dropped just one game, a 26-24 thriller to Ephrata, while picking up those three wins. Elizabethtown nearly had

three sweeps, but the Lady Bears were unable to put Ephrata away in game three despite holding a few leads throughout. That 26-24 setback came with E-town up two games to none after posting matching 25-23 wins. E-town regained their early match form to finish the night with a 25-20 win. Sydney Stewart tallied 16 digs and seven aces while Kallee Locker finished with 14 kills. Add in 18 assists from Angela CostaOuimet plus one block from Liz Kern and you get a 3-1 victory. Elizabethtown picked up their second straight 3-0 sweep on the 9th, topping Cocalico thanks to 10 Stewart kills and another 18 Costa-Ouimet assists. Paige Horst add four aces and Paige O’Connell six digs to round out the contributors. CROSS COUNTRY The cross-country teams trekked to Lancaster on the 14th to battle Cedar Crest, Hempfield, and McCaskey. The boys’ placed just two runners inside the top 20 with Nathan Johnson (19th) and Dalton Fink (20th) collecting the honors. The result was an 0-3 day, leaving the

Bears 2-3 after two meets. The Lady Bears enjoyed some success with four top 10 finishes propelling E-town to a 2-1 day. The wins came over Cedar Crest and Hempfield with a 2729 loss to McCaskey. Jordan DiRisio finished fourth while Lilah Drager, Jillian Wivell and Ali Fink formed a bear pack to finish 8th, 9th, and 10th. FIELD HOCKEY The field hockey team kept busy over the last week, going 1-3 to sit at 2-2-1 just past the quarter mark of the season.

The Lady Bears picked up that win on the 11th with a 7-0 romp over Milton Hershey. Mikaela Condran led the way with four goals and three assists while Sydney Pope needed two saves to secure the win. Regan Flory and Joanna Hanley added one goal and one assists each with Lyla Fair picking up the final score. The win over Milton Hershey pitted E-town against Newport in their second game on the 11th with the Lady Buffalos posting a 5-2 win. Condran and Flory accounted for the goals while Pope (five saves) and Alaina Telenko (10 saves) teamed up to man the cage. Elizabethtown prepped for the Milton Hershey Tournament with a September 8th clash opposite Conestoga Valley. The Buckskins managed a 4-0 win. Telenko tallied 12 saves in the loss. The four-game stretch finished on the 13th with a 2-1
setback against Donegal. Hailey Mertz connected on a penalty stroke in the fourth, but it was not enough to overcome two Emma Miller scores. Telenko finished with four saves while Tessa Cronin picked up one defensive save. FOOTBALL The gridiron gang suffered their second straight setback on the 10th, falling to Lower Dauphin by a 32-12 final. The Bears found themselves in a 170 second half hole before finding the endzone for the first time on a 22-yard Josh Rudy to Brock Belmont toss. LD answered with a long TD pass of their own and led 25-6 after a two-point conversion. Elizabethtown tried to mount a fourth quarter rally, but the Bears only managed a threeyard Rudy to Patrick Gilhool score that trimmed deficit to 25-12. A late Falcon score set the final at 32-12 and dropped E-town to 1-2 on the season.

David Deck spends a lot of time turning things over. At antique stores or flea markets, the Manheim resident can be found picking up objects and looking at what’s marked on the bottom. He’s searching for the words “Made in Occupied Japan.” David is a member of The Upside-Down World of Occupied Japan (OJ), a nationwide club of collectors that will be convening in Manheim later this month. After a members-only meeting, the club will host an event that’s open to the public on Saturday, Sept. 25, beginning at 11 a.m. at St. Paul’s Evangelical Lutheran Church, 1258 Newport Road, Penryn. David estimates that more than 1,000 items from 40
club members will be for sale at the event. “We’ll also do appraisals on site if people want to bring their items,” he noted. In a small building off Route 72 in Manheim, David has amassed an impressive collection of OJ items. Shelves are filled with dishes, tea sets, plates, banks, figurines, toys, lamps and more. Each item bears a sticker, stamp, engraving or embossment that identifies it as Made in Occupied Japan. As David explained, U.S. forces stayed in Japan from 1945 to 1952, with the goal of helping the Japanese rebuild after World War II. “From 1947 to 1952, General MacArthur declared that anything exported from Japan was to be marked ‘Made in
Occupied Japan,’” he stated. “It was marked that way so the American people would know it and would buy it to help the Japanese people get back on their feet.” David, who has been collecting the items for about 25 years, will host the Manheim meeting with his brother, Gary. “Getting together with the club is a lot of fun,” he stated. “We sit and tell stories and get to know each other, since many of us have only met through Facebook.” The brothers have traveled across the country for annual club meetings, including to Nashville, where last year’s meeting was held. The OJ club has existed for more than 40 years and is currently run by Shoko Tanaka, who lives in California, and Kathy Gardner, who resides in Indiana.
David Deck with some of his Made in Occupied Japan items.
At 77, David continues to add to his collection and said he expects his youngest son to one day acquire his treasures. Until then, he’s always on the hunt for more. “It’s an affordable hobby,” he remarked. “I love finding different items. You have to
look at each one and see if the piece is marked. That’s the fun of it.” For more information on the Occupied Japan club gettogether, visit https://tinyurl .com/826wkcut. Contact David about buying or selling items at 717-203-3657.

Beethoven Concert Series To Conclude The Arts at Millersville University will present a concert by pianist Xun Pan as the multiseason series Beethoven’s 250th Birthday Celebration draws to a close. “Three Sonatas From Three Periods” will take place on Friday, Sept. 24, at 7:30 p.m. at Steinman Hall in the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. There is a ticket fee, and there are special rates for students. Because the year 2020 marked the 250th anniversary of Beethoven’s birth, Pan, Millersville University’s Tell School of Music director of keyboard studies, commemorated the composer’s legacy by presenting a concert series performance of all 32 of the composer’s piano sonatas, 10 piano and violin sonatas, five piano and cello sonatas, and three variations. Pan, in partnership with violinist Simon Maurer and cellist Emilio Colón, has nearly completed the performance of all 50 works over several years, both locally and internationally. For more information or to purchase tickets, go to www.artsmu.com.
